A day to remember
Senior Sergeant Kyell Palmer salutes fallen colleagues at the Police Remembrance Day march last Friday in Atherton.
Officers, family and community members gathered on Friday to remember and honour Police who lost their lives in the line of duty An emotional tribute was made to members of the Tablelands Police Service last Friday during a service in Atherton that honoured fallen officers. National Police Remem-
brance Day (NPRD) is an annual event that recognises the unique nature of the police service and the dangers police face in their daily pursuits. Arguably one of the most
important days on the policing calendar, National Police Remembrance Day is a time for members of the Service and the Community to remember, honour and say ‘thank you’ together
to the dedicated men and women who have died whilst on duty. National Police Remembrance Day has been held in regional centres throughout Queensland since 1989.
National Police Remembrance Day is observed annually in September as it marks the Feast of Saint Michael (the Archangel), Patron Saint of Police, who fought great evil.
Marches and services were held throughout Queensland on Friday, September 28 as well as locally in Atherton at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. PHOTOS P7

Ready, set, fun run Fitness and fun will be all the rage at this Sunday’s Mareeba Rotary Bendigo Bank Fun Run and Walk. Kicking off at 8am at the Bicentennial Lakes, it all about fun and fitness with mental health in mind. As October is Mental Health month, the annual event has been registered as an official ‘Hat Day’ event which means proceeds will be donated to Australian Rotary Health for research in helping the one in five Australians affected by depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and many other illnesses. Organisers are hoping for more than 100 competitors, who
will be able to run or walk in 5km’s men’s, women’s and junior division with the 1km dash. The fun run and walk will kick off from the Lakes at the clearing just behind Mareeba Swimming Pool before going on a cross-country adventure. So get active and help lift the lid on mental illness. You can register and pay your entry fee on line via the Mareeba Rotary Facebook page or on the morning from 7.30am. Competitors will need to be at Bicentennial Lakes, located along Keeble and Abbott streets, Mareeba by 7:30am for an 8am start.
FUN: Last year’s fun run and walk was a hit with locals and organisers are hoping for more than 100 competitors this Sunday.

the Brisbane floods. Last year Australians gave 300,000 pairs of glasses to people in need all over the world. The hearing aids go to the Princess Alexandra Hospital who then gives them to Australian’s in need. “Hearing aids coat a lot of money and are a gift of great value to the Hospital,” he said. Push for a new range road
Local momentum is building on the Tablelands to lobby Government for a new road to take cars down to Cairns instead of navigating the infamously dangerous Kuranda Range. The mood locally is sombre after so many accidents on the road has blocked access for hours on end leaving motorists with no other option but to either find an alternative route or wait it out. Mareeba resident Anthony McNab has been a strong advocate for a tunnel to be built as an alternative to traversing the Range. He said it is time to think seriously about the idea. “It is a dangerous stretch of road to begin with especially in the wet season, when trees can fall onto the road requiring clearing, this can cause not only backlog in traffic it can also pose a threat to life, if someone tries to swerve to miss and drives off the edge,” he said. “The main reason we need this project to actually go ahead is, our region is growing and we must keep up with the times. You travel to any European, Asian country and you see tunnels eve-
rywhere. It’s a better way to get people to where they want to go. It will also entice Cairns people to look outside Cairns to live. The tunnel would cut down on travel time to Cairns this would make moving to Mareeba FOUR-LANE HIGHWAY? An artist a more viable proimpression of a four-lane highway posal and would on the Kuranda Range Road. ease urban sprawl into rain forested “The Tunnel would need to be areas surrounding a four lane two up and two down Cairns.” Mr McNab has previously to be ready for future population pushed for an upgrade to Black growth, the tunnel would go a Mountain Road in Kuranda long way to future proofing our which he says offers a viable region and the Tropical North. “Another thing I have thought alternative to Cairns from Mossof is the spoil from the tunnel man and Port Douglas. “If we can spark action on boring process, this could be this it would be something future used in expanding the parkland generations will thank us for,” he on the Esplanade in Cairns. said. Thus, giving something else
back to Cairns and our region.” While the debate continues and locals are lobbying the government to look seriously at the proposal of an alternative road, there are no current plans to make any changes to the road. If not a tunnel then a four lane highway would also suffice. In a statement released to The Express, Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore said the Kuranda
Range in its current state, is the biggest threat to the development of the Tablelands and the problem could have been solved ten years ago. Cr Gilmore has been strongly advocating for well over a decade about the imperatives of upgrading the Kuranda Range. “Kuranda Range is a critical link for tourism, agriculture, business and economic development of the Mareeba Shire,” Cr Gilmore said. “Whether it is catching a flight, going to a medical appointment, attending a lecture at the University or work, the Kuranda Range poses a serious threat to the day-to-day business of commuters and business op-
erators.” Cr Gilmore said over ten years ago, a major planning exercise was undertaken on the upgrade of Kuranda Range, and a suitable four-lane model was agreed upon by all parties involved in the task force. “Had the approved outcome of a four-lane carriageway been followed, it would have today provided a reliable and safe link between the Tablelands and Cairns,” he said. “Instead, ten years has effectively been wasted, and it is imperative that all three levels of government work towards the agreed model of this important economic link. “The Kuranda Range is well and truly past its use-by date and on behalf of my community, I urge the State and Federal Governments to give the Kuranda Range the priority it deserves," Cr Gilmore concluded.
Mount Emerald Wind Farm raises final turbine Nineteen months after construction works kicked off, Ratch Australian Corporation announced last week it had raised the last of 53 turbines at its 180MW Mount Emerald Wind Farm.
The milestone follows the $360 million project achieving “first generation” last month when several turbines started to turn and supply power to the national electricity grid and precedes the wind farm achieving
full commercial operation in November. All of the high voltage underground cabling has now been installed connecting each of the turbines to the site’s substation and switchyard. From here, the power gener-
ated enters the grid network for distribution to electricity users in the far north. Once fully operational, Mount Emerald will be the biggest wind farm in Queensland and will deliver in the order of
540,000 MW hours of renewable energy, which is predicted to meet the annual needs of approximately 75,000 North Queensland homes. The wind farm will also boost Queensland’s renewable energy
credentials significantly. Of the 3,500MW of wind generation capacity currently in Australia, Queensland currently only supplies around 12MW from wind farms in Ravenshoe and Thursday Island.

Kuranda Men’s Shed receives boost during national week The Kuranda Men’s Shed has been awarded $7000 for muchneeded infrastructure works from the federal government under its highly-successful National Shed Development Program. Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch today joined Kuranda Men’s Shed members for a BBQ and catch-up las week as part of National Men’s Shed Week. He said the Kuranda Men’s Shed would use the money to install a septic tank, absorption trenches and other necessary pipe works. “First and foremost a men’s shed is a place to knock around with a group of mates,” Mr Entsch said. “Like similar sheds across Australia, the Kuranda shed offers support to any local men who need a bit of space and some friendly, easy-going company. “Men are often the last ones to make their health and wellbeing a priority. It’s imperative that we do what we can to ensure they get the support they need and deserve. “Men are talking about their health more and more, and the men’s shed provides a safe and friendly environment for them to do so. “Men’s sheds are integral to the community, particularly in remote communities across Far North Queensland, and the benefits to men’s health are widely

acknowledged.” Kuranda Men’s Shed secretary Daryl Douglass said they had been slowly gaining support from across the community since opening in February this year. “This generous injection of funds from the federal government will give us the boost that we need to really take off,” Mr Douglass said. “At present, we are operating out of a storage shed and there are no toilet facilities on the site, so members have no choice but to either hold it in or dashoff into the bushes when nature calls. “I know blokes are blokes,
but there is a limit. “This system, along with a transportable toilet block on loan from one of our members, will create a much improved environment when our main shed building work starts. “More than ever the Men’s Shed is needed in our community. “Standing Shoulder to shoulder to address the issues surrounding men’s health, I say to Mr Entsch, thanks mate you’re a life saver.” Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt said feeling part of a social group is important to our emotional and mental health.
He said the Morrison Government recognises these benefits and was investing a total of $5.1 million over three years to the national men’s sheds movement. “Every day men’s sheds across Australia and in Far North Queensland provide men with an opportunity for companionship and support within their community,” Mr Hunt said. “The men’s shed grants programme provides funding for health improvement activities, the purchase of tools and equipment, community projects and training, and for building maintenance and development.
50 years of service to rural fires

Mareeba Chamber puts spotlight on water A three-year, $28 million project could deliver enough water to support an additional 1000 hectares of crops in the Mareeba region, the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce lunch meeting heard on Wednesday. The business organisation made water front and centre at its monthly meeting, with guests hearing about current plans to deliver more water and the current water needs from the region’s largest sugar grower and miller. Charlie Martens, Sunwater Project Manager, outlined plans to claw back some of the thousands of megalitres of water that is lost from the Mareeba Dimbulah Water Supply Scheme every year. He said the Mareeba Dimbulah Water Supply Scheme Modernisation Project would make
available an additional 8,000 megalitres, with another 12,000 megalitres identified if current works were successful. The project is funded under the Federal Government’s National Water Infrastructure Development Fund ($11.6 million), with Sunwater providing $16.3 million. Mr Martens said the project would involve pressurising pipelines, increasing storage in the system and automation, with six areas identified within the irrigation system. His colleague, Michael Pitmann, Sunwater Planning Manager Major Projects, provided an update on the Nullinga Dam proposal, which is currently in the detailed business case (DBC) stage. Mr Pittman said a demand assessment study was underway,
with sugarcane topping the list of likely demand for additional water in the agriculture sector, with mixed fruit trees and avocadoes also needing more water. He said the DBD would give a “greater level of certainty and accuracy to underpin the decision making”. Mr Pittman said the dam proposal would take into consideration financial return from investment but also the economic benefit to the region. The words were music to the ears of MSF Sugar General Manager Business Development Hywel Cook, whose company is finalising construction of an $80 biorefinery power station at the Tableland Mill, and actively seeking more cane supply to continue the company’s transformation from a raw sugar company into a diversified sugarcane
business. Mr Cook said on commissioning, the plant would burn 1000 tonnes of bagasse – a 100 % renewable sugarcane fibre - a day, to generate 24 megawatts of electricity. “Water is the key,” Mr Cook said. “If we got another 50,000 megalitres of water, it would allow another 500,000 tonnes of cane to be put through the mill.” Mareeba Chamber of Commerce President Joe Moro said modernisation of the water supply scheme and the proposed Nullinga Dam were part of a three-point plan put forward by the region’s agricultural industries to help future proof the region. He said the modernisation project would deliver short-term relief, while work continued on assessing a new dam.

The long awaited Herberton Fire Station was officially opened by the Minister for Fire and Emergency Services, Craig Crawford, on Friday September 21. The new $1.2 million station replaces Herberton’s old station along Grace Street and will feature facilities for SES training and room for two fire trucks.
QFRS said that the building at 38 Perkins St, was considered to be strategically located within Herberton, enabling an effective fire and rescue service to be provided to the Herberton region. The opening of the new station is now being fully utilised at a time when the fire season is well and truly in full swing as fire fighters battle to control fires
in the Watsonville and Mount Nolan area. Emergency crews from around the district have descended into the region to protect lives and properties from potential destruction. Residents are being asked to be vigilant at this time of the year when the fire hazard indicator is extremely high.

Rhodes ready for top job
The new Inspector for the Tablelands Patrol Group, Russell Rhodes, will take up his appointment in early November this year. Inspector Rhodes spoke exclusively with The Express at a recent function to bid farewell to the now retired Rolf Straatemeier. Upon finishing his secondary education at St Augustine’s College in Cairns in 1980, he joined the Queensland Police Force in January 1981 and was sworn in after completing his academy training in July 1982. He spent his first nine months as a Police officer in the first year constable program in Brisbane
city and then transferred to Mareeba in April of 1983. Inspector Rhodes spent four years in Mareeba where he relieved at all stations in the district including places like Georgetown, Chillagoe, Mt Molloy, Mt Surprise and many others. In 1986 he transferred to Georgetown where he was stationed for three years until the end of 1989. While in Georgetown his wife Maree gave birth to his two daughters. Rachel and Ashleigh. In 1990 they moved to Malanda where his son Ben was born and he remained stationed there until 1992. In July of 1992 he was promoted to Sergeant and
the family then moved to Cairns for general duties until 1998. “We were always on the move,” Russell recalls. “I was then posted to Mt Isa as the Officer in Charge of Mt Isa Station until 2000. I then came back to Edmonton as the Senior Sergeant and in 2001 I was promoted to Inspector for Cape York for seven years. The family then moved back to Cairns and he also worked in Innisfail area when Cyclone Yasi came through. His most recent post was to Townsville as Officer in Charge of the North Queensland Police Academy where he has spent the last seven years.
“It’s great to back in the far north again as I take over from Inspector Rolf Straatemeier who has been the Inspector here for just over fourteen years. “I’m really looking forward to working here as the Patrol Inspector for this great district that covers the area from Mareeba to Mt Molloy to Chillagoe, out to Croydon and all the Tablelands – it will be a great way to end my career in the Queensland Police Service. “I’ll be finishing up my time in Townsville soon and will be ready for work in early November and I look forward to serving this community.” said Inspector Rhodes.
Inspector Russell Rhodes will commence his new role in November and is looking forward to serving the Tablelands community.

TGT General Manager Sheldon Mulla said the project commenced last year with a 30kw installation on the Home Timber and Hardware store in Byrnes St, Mareeba. “With the success of that installation, we have recently completed the Dimbulah branch, with Tolga, Granite building and Top Stock to commence shortly,” said Mr Mulla. “With ample roof space, no shortage of sunshine and with power prices being one of the larger expenses for the company, it was an easy decision to go solar.” he said. With Top Stock and the Granite businesses being the larger power consumers, installations of up to 100kw are being in-
stalled. “We are pleased to be playing our part to reduce power costs and to do something positive for the environment,” Mr Mulla said. “The ability to export surplus power and sell back to the grid has diminished over the years, but with solar install prices being significantly cheaper than several years ago, solar can still play a big part in reducing operating costs for larger business like TGT. “It was also important for us to use local installers, so being able to partner with two local suppliers was very pleasing, ensuring any money spent stays in the community. “We hope all installations will be completed in the next month or so to take advantage of the coming spring and summer periods.” Mr Mulla said.
Next month marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, making this year’s Remembrance Day celebations bigger than usual. On November 11 Yungaburra will be a hive of activity with a full program of activities to mark the day on which the fallen are remembered. The programme will commence at 10am with a short march to the Memorial Gates where the service will be conducted. Following the service, which will conclude at 11.15am there will be military vehicles, memorabilia, story-telling, and food vans. The Yungaburra Military Commemorative Committee has also sought the support of the Defence Services which is yet to be confirmed. “The committee is also asking for support from the community,” said committee member Ray Byrnes. “A display of memorabilia
will be set up and if you would like to contribute any items, it would be greatly appreciated. There will be a story-telling corner set up and families who have World War One stories are invited to participate by telling that story. Any contributions of period furniture and fittings for the Story Corner would also add to the atmosphere.” The Yungaburra Military Commemorative Committee would like to acknowledge the Yungaburra Association Inc, QCWA, Eacham Historial Society, Yungaburra Lions and Yungaburra Rifle Club 1914 for supporting this important day of remembrance and observance. For further information and offers of stories, memorabilia or furniture, contact Ray Byrnes at 4095 3932. Vital to support local business
Elderly residents in Mareeba are concerned that Mareeba Shire Council is not supporting local businesses. Pensioners living in aged care homes recently received letters from a Cairns Company informing them that they would be conducting annual pest control maintenance to their aged care properties last week. A resident on Colquhoun
Street, who wished to remain anonymous said; “Surly there are local businesses here in Mareeba that could do the same job, I thought the Council was supposed to support local businesses, this is not a local business.” In response to a request from The Express council assured local residents that council policy of supporting local business was being adhered to.
A Council spokesperson said; Council’s procurement policy has a local business preference clause to encourage the development of competitive local businesses and industry within the Mareeba Shire Council area. This includes a pricing advantage for local businesses of 10%, to a maximum of $5,000. In the case of the pest control contractor for the pensioner cot-
tages, the Cairns-based company tendered a price significantly lower than the other tenders. While we are always keen to support local business’ we are also very cognisant of the fact that we have to keep costs as low as possible for the ratepayer, especially in this case, as it is the aged pensioners who indirectly pick up the costs.

Split decision on property application A development application to split a property in Mt Garnet in two divided Tablelands Regional councillors at last week's meeting. Mayor Joe Paronella reluctantly had the casting vote on deciding whether to grant the applicants wish to split their 1059ha property into two lots. The officer's recommendation was to refuse the application on the grounds that it did not meet the principles of the Council's planning scheme in that the
smaller land parcels would be economically unviable. But three out of six councillors disagreed (Councillor Anthony Ball was absent). “It is high agriculture area except for the water,” said Councillor Annette Haydon. “There are other lots in that area that are smaller than that.” Councillor Kate Eden said the applicants should have provided more evidence to support the claim that the smaller lots would be economically viable.
“I think the applicant did have the opportunity to provide information to show the viability of the land and they didn't do that,” she said. A deadlocked vote meant Mayor Joe Paronella was forced to make the final decision. “This is one I have gone forwards and backwards over,” he said of the application. “But I must support the plan. I hate having the casting vote. I want to be as fair as we can but I have to support the recommendation.”
Laneway contribution creates debate NEW SKILLS: Tony Cock takes the dogs through their paces at Kerribee Park.
Working dogs learn tricks of the trade For the 7th year running Kerribee Park was home to a working dog course for those wanting to up-skill and those looking to learn the ropes. Hosted by the Koolie Club of Australia, Tony Cock annually travels to Mareeba from Central Queensland to part with a lifetime of wisdom. “People come here to try and fix problems but some people come because they just want to learn how to do it,” says the Stockman.
“I try and make it as upbeat as possible. You learn as much watching everyone else do good things and bad things as what you learn doing it yourself.” Around 30 participants travelled from as far as Melbourne and Kingaroy for one of two three day courses that introduces dogs firstly to sheep and goats and then cattle in the main arena. “I’ve got to go in there and see how people are and how
their dogs are and then slowly with repetition we get them to take sheep around a little course and then it’s just repetition to get them better and better and try and get them as good as I can with their dog because every dog is different, every person is different,” said Mr Cock. “I just have a practical approach. I don’t tell you what to do I just give you different ideas on what you can do.”
A 20 year agreement between the owners of the Barron Valley Hotel in Atherton and Tablelands Regional Council was revisited at last week's monthly council meeting. Proprietor Mick Nasser asked council to re-consider its financial contribution to an arrangement made in 1998 that meant a public walkway was constructed from the Railway Lane car park at the back of the building through to Main Street via the hotel. The agreement also meant there would be public access to the disabled toilet facilities located within the hotel which would be maintained by Barron Valley Hotel staff. Councillors from the old Atherton Shire Council financially contributed to the con-
struction of the ramp and agreed to an annual sum of $1000 towards ongoing maintenance. The figure was re-visited and maintained in 2009 but now Mr Nasser is asking council to dig deeper in line with rising costs. In a letter to council dated August 1, Mr Nasser expressed concern over increased public usage of the facilities in the past 18 years since the agreement was made, as well as the rise in the cost of maintaining the facilities. The councillors agreed unanimously to delegate authority to CEO Justin Commons to revisit the annual contribution in line with CPI. “I remember moving this motion back in 2001,” said Mayor Joe Paronella. “There were big discussions
around it then and I still feel it's a really important access just to ensure people use the parking down at the back.” Debate rose over the continuity of the agreement after General Manager of Infrastructure Services Mark Vis suggested creating an "exit strategy" for the future with the Priors Creek precinct and its proposed facilities in mind. Deputy Mayor Katrina Mellick disagreed. “To have that access to a disabled toilet at the centre of town for an upkeep of just $1000 a year is great,” she said. “It is a strategic thoroughfare and unless there are extraneous circumstances I wouldn't support the second part of the recommendation.”

Locals to be recognised at cattleman’s dinner
Each year the Gulf Cattleman’s Association holds an event to bring industry and locals together. This year’s event is a testimonial dinner where Joe Rolfe and Bernie English will be honoured. Barry Hughes, president of the Gulf Cattleman’s Association encourages all members of
the community to attend the Gulf Cattleman’s Dinner, a celebration bringing town and country folks together. Gulf Cattleman’s Association, along with Northern Gulf Resource Management Group and the Gulf Grazing Community have come together to acknowledge the contribution of
Joe Rolfe and Bernie English through their work as DAF Extension Officers. The Cattleman’s dinner is being held in Georgetown at the Shire hall on October 13 to honour their efforts and valuable support across this region. Their combined efforts have provided support mechanisms to
the gulf cattle industry through floods, fire and drought events over the last decades. Joe and Bernie’s work introduced the cattle industry to improvements and expansion of knowledge to a vast array of new initiatives relating to land and livestock management. Just recently their work with other

MAREEBA UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB
Come & Run with the Bulls!
Bulls charge into grand finals The orange army will invade Endeavour Park this weekend as four Mareeba Bulls teams feature in the FNQ Football grand finals.
As President of the Mareeba United Football Club, I am delighted that we had five out of the six senior teams qualify for the finals series, as well as five of the junior teams progressing to the semifinals – with three of these junior teams winning their Grand Final. Unfortunately, the Youth team bowed out of the finals last week. With four teams now through to the grand finals this weekend, we are hoping they can all bring home the silver wear. In my first year as President, I am very proud of all the teams, no matter what results happen over the course of the weekend. I think it shows how much talent Mareeba United has, right through from the Juniors to Seniors. I would like to make a special mention to our Ladies team who have qualified for the finals for the first time in 13 years – a great effort, considering they are down to just 13 players. I would like to wish all the teams the best of luck in the finals this weekend.
Remo Terranova
Premier Reserves
Coach Dennis Allen’s Premier Reserves will make another grand final appearance this weekend after securing a comfortable 4-1 win last weekend against Edge Hill United. It’s been a tough year for the reserve grade side which was flaunt with injuries and
player unavailability. “There have been a lot of ups and downs this year, but the boys have proved that they are up to the task,” said Coach Allen. “We deserve to be there, we need to show a high level of intensity and we definitely believe we can win the game.
2nd Division Men
At his first attempt at coaching, 21 year old Keanu Tatti is relishing the idea of taking the Mareeba Bulls second division team to the grand final this weekend. With a blend of youth and enthusiasm, the player coach has taken the team to new heights by being the first Bulls team to secure a grand
final berth. “I’m expecting our boys to go out there and give the opposition heaps, we’ve proven throughout the year that we can beat anyone,” said Tatti. “Everyone has put in the time and effort and they deserve to be in the grand final. “They are up for the challenge, it will be a tough game, but I have no doubt in my mind that the boys want to win this game. “I was pretty nervous coming in, first year coaching, only 21, I was a little worried about some of the older boys and how they would take instructions, but we have jelled as a group and everyone has met my expectations.” he said. GAME TIME: FRIDAY 6PM
“We didn’t really know what to expect this year – there were a lot of young players coming through. We started the season quit slowly, but as we got going throughout the year we got some good wins and at one stage were in contention for the premiership.
“We dropped off at a crucial time of the year which probably came down to experience. We have a full complement of players so it will come down to performance and we will be fielding our strongest side.” He said GAME TIME: SATURDAY 5.30PM
1st Division Men
After a topsy turvy season the Mareeba Bulls first division team is heading into the grand final this weekend on the back of hard fought wins which saw them finish second on the table. Coach Mario Tarranova
said that the aging team was complimented throughout the season with youth players who helped bring them over the line. “We did the best we could, we got to where we are by sticking to our game plan,” said Terranova. “This weekend we can’t fall into the trap of adapting to what they are doing, it’s as simple as that. “If we do our things right the rewards will be there at the end. “There are certain things we discussed as a team after
Premier Ladies
The Mareeba Ladies Premier division team will be in uncharted waters this Saturday as its been 13 years since a Bulls ladies team has graced the park in a grand final. The young side matured at just the right time of the season. While reaching the top four was their preseason goal, they have exceeded their expectations by not only defeating Leichhardt for the very first time all season, but also being the only team to beat the premiership win-
ners, Edge Hill who they meet in the grand final. “I was supposed to go fishing last week, but I cancelled all that because I sensed something special happening with this squad,” said Coach Brian Schincariol. “The Ladies played their hearts out last weekend against a team we have never beaten before and to come up with a win was just great for them. “They all have this great belief
we were beaten 3-0 by Douglas last time which we need to bring into the final. “Douglas has quality across the park so we need to be vigilant, stick to our game plan and with a bit of tweaking with the formation from our perspective we will give them a good run. “We are going to miss Paul Ruiz, Anthony Mete and Christian Mukadi who are out injured so everyone will have to step up, I’m optimistic.” he said. GAME TIME: FRIDAY 8.15PM
that they can do this, not just for themselves, but for the club and the supporters. “Whatever happens in the final they should all be very proud of what they have achieved, we lost five players during the course of the season and we often played with just two players off the bench so everyone has put in a tremendous effort to reach the Grand Final.” he said. GAME TIME: SATURDAY 2.45PM

Mareeba schools score big thanks to Coles Mareeba schools are expected to receive nearly $18,000 in sports gear from Coles this month after collecting more than 441,000 vouchers at their local supermarkets through Coles’ Sports for Schools program. Over coming weeks, Coles will deliver an extensive range of quality sports gear to around 15 local primary and secondary schools in the region. Sports gear will include
popular items such as cricket and softball bats, footballs, basketballs, javelins, hockey sticks, skipping ropes, racquets, first aid kits and nets. The local schools were among more than 7000 schools across Australia that participated in the Sports for Schools program between February and April this year by collecting over 200 million vouchers at Coles. The local school to receive
the most sporting equipment will be St Thomas' School after collecting nearly 84,000 vouchers as part of the Sports for Schools program. World champion athlete Sally Pearson said it was exciting to hear that so much equipment will be delivered to schools across the community. “It’s a dream come true for schools to be given all this equipment enabling kids to keep fit and healthy.

Hopefully we’ll see future Olympic Champions as a result of this Coles initiative,” she said. State General Manager Jerry Farrell said Coles was delighted to be delivering sports equipment to local schools.
“We’re really impressed by the way the local community has got behind the program by collecting so many vouchers for their school,” he said. “We hope the new sports equipment will result in a lot
of healthy, active fun for school kids.” Across the nation, Coles expects to give away around $10 million worth of quality sports gear.

Mixed results in T20 double header It was captain Dan Parnell’s day on Saturday, entertaining supporters with an awesome T20 batting display at Loder Park. Atherton had a Cricket Far North double header at home against United and Mulgrave. Atherton won the toss against United and elected to bat first. Dan Parnell continued his great early season form with the bat, clearing the fence nine times with some massive cleanly hit sixes on his way to 115 off 65 balls. Fred Pittorino supported with 40 as Atherton closed their in-

nings 5-190. United could not match the run rate, posting 5-122 in reply. Dan Parnell won the toss against Mulgrave and batted first but were unable to get any momentum against Mulgrave’s quality bowling attack. Dan Parnell topscored again with 40 as Atherton were bowled out for 94. Atherton’s bowlers tried hard and were able to hold Mulgrave out to the 18th over. Atherton travel to Innisfail next Saturday for a T20 match against Cassowary Coast.
Grand final quadruple for Bulls AFTER a weekend of wins for the Mareeba Bulls, the club will now have four grades playing in the FNQ Football grand finals this weekend. The winning streak started on Friday night at home when the Atherton Eagles came to town in numbers to try and spoil the party for the home crowd and send the Bulls packing. But after the first twenty minutes, where the home side came out firing and should have deservedly taken the lead, the Eagles fought back to get into the match. It was only a solitary second half header from Bulls defender Daniel Schincariol, that was the difference between the two sides as the Bulls held on for a
1-0 win and booked their spot in the grand final against the Port Douglas Dragons this Friday night. On Saturday, both the ladies and mens reserves sides travelled down to the home of the Southside Comets. The ladies took on hot favourites, the Leichhardt Lions, and after the tense opening half hour the Bulls found their feet and looked the better side for much of the opening 45 minutes. The ladies should have taken the lead, but in the second half the match evened out and nothing could split the two sides and once again for the second time in two weeks the lady Bulls headed into extra time.
In what was a special team performance, all of the 13 ladies played admirably never giving up and with only seven minutes remaining in the second half of extra time the Bulls were awarded a penalty after a Lions hand ball in the penalty area. Goal keeper Farah Boustead stood up to take the penalty and with the hearts in the mouth of all the supporters, Boustead calmly finished to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead which they held onto to book their first grand appearance since 2005. The Bulls reserves then took the field and charged ahead with a 2-0 lead. Dylan Cummings and Isiash Goncalves opened the scoring before the Tigers got one
back just before halftime. In the second period the Bulls clicked into another gear totally dominating proceedings. Damian Wildman and a 20 yard bullet from Lucio Da Rocha gave the Mareeba side a comprehensive 4-1 win to also secure their spot in the grand final. GRAND FINAL TIMES: Mareeba Bulls 2nd division men will be play this Friday night at Endeavour Park at 6pm, with the 1st division final immediately after at 8.15pm. The Ladies and Reserves will play their grand final matches on Saturday at Endeavour Park – Ladies at 2.45pm and Reserves 5.30pm. Turn to page 17 for more.

Kowanyama police ready to kick some goals: S/C Barnard, S/C Barnard, S/SGT Thompson, S/C Joubert, S/C Billiau, S/C Rix and PLO Yam.
Step aside Cristiano Ronaldo, the Kowanyama indoor soccer league are breeding their own new soccer champions. Every Tuesday night the Kowanyama Sports Hall is a hive of activity with six local teams battling it out for top spot on the ladder. The social league has only been running for two weeks and is already proving a hit with locals. The idea was born by Kowanyama Police Officer, Senior Constable Mark Rix and has taken flight with six teams now vying for top honours.
There is more to Senior Constable Rix than a blue police uniform: in a past life Senior Constable Rix played professional futsal in Brazil. After joining the Queensland Police he was part of the gold medal winning team in the International Police Games. Each team has been provided with their own shirts and a social barbeque is held every Tuesday night thanks to funding graciously provided by the Kowanyama Police Social Club and a QPS community initiative grant. Recreation manager Kevin Bell also provided support to the

initiative by supplying goal posts and balls. Officer in Charge of Kowanyama Police Station, Acting Senior Sergeant Lynda Thompson praised the positive effect the matches are having on relationships between police and the community. “The matches are a great way for us to interact with our community and provide the perfect opportunity to break down the barriers on a social level,” Acting Senior Sergeant Thompson said. “Officers at the Kowanyama Police Station are right behind the initiative and thoroughly
enjoy both the social and fitness side of the games. “The Kowanyama Police team play against five other teams in a six-a-side match consisting of two by 10 minute halves. “Competition is strong, and whilst we would like to say that the police team is the one to beat, the KK Kings (green team) are currently leading the charge.” said Senior Sergeant Thompson. The season is set to end in December with the Kowanyama Police Social Club kindly donating a trophy for presentation to the season winners.
