Bat plan needed By Rebecca Wallis

While a colony of flying foxes is making life miserable for a group of Mareeba residents, a bat expert is calling for a longer term plan to remove the protected species from residential areas once and for all. It’s been eight months

since the bats were last moved on from Basalt Gully but four months ago they returned with a vengeance, with residents reporting the numbers have almost tripled in size. For Nadine Mitchell and Simon ‘Red’ Cockrem whose property backs onto the tree line, the bats’ return has meant more sleep-

less nights, an eye-watering stench, deafening noise morning and night and an inability to spend any time outside due to the faeces and urine of the animals. “It’s so stressful,” said Ms Mitchell. “I can’t explain. We get up, go to work and try and run our businesses but I am exhausted. I am trying

to be a mum to three kids, run a business and on top of that getting up at 4am every morning because of the bats. You can’t sleep through it. And I don’t think there is any consideration for the stress, anxiety and well being of us. I know there is a lot of concern about the well being of the bats, but I think the well

being of us as people is just forgotten. Property prices are going down around here. My parents own this house but they can’t sell it because who wants to buy it with thousands of bats living here?” Ms Mitchell’s property backs onto the home of Georgetown councillor Troy Barnes who last

week instructed tree loppers to come in and start trimming the vegetation. With the help of Mareeba Shire Council workers, the bats are currently being dispersed with noise and smoke before the trees are being heavily cut back leaving the bats no option but to find somewhere else to go.

Although relieved that they will be gone, Ms Mitchell and her partner Mr Cockrem say the procedure is nothing but a ‘band aid effect’ and are calling for more to be done long term to ensure they do not return. “This is all cool, we’ve got the bats away for five cont. P3

Doctor Bridson top of her class By Rebecca Wallis

Mareeba girl Tahnee Bridson has just started her first week as a doctor at Cairns Base Hospital after finishing at JCU the top of her class. The 25 year old nearly didn’t make it to her graduation ceremony in Townsville at the end of the year, but made a last minute decision to go. Assuming she was just collecting her double degree of Medicine and Surgery with Honours, Tahnee was also given multiple prestigious prizes, much to her surprise. The first was the Rural Doctors Association of Queensland Prize, which recognises the student that performed the best on their 4th year rural placement. The second was the Townsville Hospital Emergency Medicine Critical and Crisis Care Fund Prize for the person that did the best on the emergency medicine rotation. She was the only person out of 180 graduating medical students to receive

both prizes and was then awarded an academic medal along with a small minority of other students for achieving a GPA over 6.5. Tahnee thought she was done with the accolades but was called up yet again to receive the University Medal which is awarded to one medical graduate only. It is awarded for ‘outstanding academic achievement.’. “I got really emotional,” said Tahnee who was ending her seventh year as a student after opting to take the honours path on top of her double degree. “I didn’t expect all the prizes but it made everything worth it.” Tahnee is currently on an induction week for her first ever job as a doctor at Cairns Base where she will be an intern for the next 12 months. Later in the year she will return to her home town for a stint back at Mareeba Hospital. Long term Tahnee hopes to study for a PHD while working and is considering a future in psychiatry.

Tolga’s Amy Hunter ecstatic after helping Queensland to win a national title.

Amy helps Queensland win national cricket comp By Rebecca Wallis

TWELVE year old Amy Hunter only started to play cricket 18 months ago but last week not only represented Queensland in the game but helped them to win a national title. The Tolga student, who

will be starting at Atherton State High School later this month, travelled down to NSW for the week-long Under 12 Girls National Cricket Championships. Flanked by a team she only met and played with for the first time weeks before, Amy played like a pro and brought home gold

medals and a trophy. “We were so ecstatic,” said mum Juanita Hunter. “We couldn’t have asked for any more. We had a lot of help from a lot of people getting her here, but we just couldn’t deny her the opportunity to play because you never know if another one will come

along again.” Amy took three wickets and three captures in the final game and overall the Queenslanders defeated eight teams. The Atherton Junior Cricket player is now back on the Tablelands preparing for high school and more cricket.

Australia Day nominations

Simon ‘Red’ Cockrem with his partner’s children in front of their property on Morrow Street that backs on to an area that is currently home to thousands of bats.

Call for long term action over bats

From P1

minutes, but we’ve got no solution to this,” said Mr Cockrem. “But the biggest thing for us and for all these people around here is that it feels like no one gives a shit. Not one councillor has ever come and seen it and said right this is what we’re going to do. This might last until October but then what’s going to happen next year?” Mr Cockrem said he feels unsupported by Mareeba Shire Council after months and months of calls and emails lead nowhere. But a spokesperson for the council said they had been monitoring the colony and because the bats had recently taken up residence on private property they had been assisting in their removal. “Council has been monitoring the bat colony in Basalt Gully, Mareeba for some time,” they said. “The recent activity on Morrow Street has been on private property and Council and DEHP (De-

partment of Environment and Heritage Protection) has assisted with the recent dispersal using approved methods including smoke and noise.” Rebecca Koller, a bat expert and carer from Kuranda, has been present at the bat dispersal on Stewart Street over the past week ensuring the safety of the flying foxes. She said everyone needs to work together to create a “well thought out long term flying fox management plan that is in everyone’s best interest. “Last year when council dispersed, it was suggested to them to have a management plan for the future, this included looking at the location they preferred them to go and establishing a suitable habitat for them there by replanting,” said Ms Koller. “They agreed this would work, I provided them the wholesale nursery Cairns Council uses. This was not done, instead heavy pruning and tree removal was done at Basalt Gully and Centennial Lakes. After the

pruning/tree removal no further work was completed so the plants grew back and the bats returned.” Ms Koller said a longer term plan needed to be established. “Council need to look at long term solutions in the interest of not only the bats but also local residents and farmers,” she said. “Creating a wildlife corridor or replanting a suitable area with appropriate vegetation suitable for flying foxes will reduce the likelihood of them returning to former roosts. The former roosts also need to be maintained. Dispersals are expensive and to simply conduct one every year when bats return is both harmful to the bats and a waste of ratepayers money.” A spokesperson for the Department of Science said the current colony of flying foxes residing on Stewart Street “did not fit the definition of a roost under Queensland’s nature conservation laws. “No permit is required

from the Department of Environment and Science (DES) to discourage the flying-foxes from landing in trees in the street,” they said. “However, all flyingfox species in Queensland are protected wildlife and it is not permissible to harm or kill the animals while undertaking works to prevent or discourage flying foxes from camping in the area.” Ms Mitchell said if the bats return to their current location she doesn’t know how long she will be able to remain living there. “It makes me feel sick thinking about it. I don’t think I could do it again. I’m at my wits end,” she said. “The lack of sleep is getting to me. When you’re woken up at 4am every single day. They need to go somewhere that’s good for the bats and away from people.” Since being dispersed from behind Ms Mitchell’s property, the bats have begun to roost further along the Gully.

“We’re not happy that we’ve pushed them into the park because the poor residents down there are going through what we’re going through,” said Mr Cockrem. “No one seems to know how to deal with them and once people get frustrated, they get angry. Now we’re angry because no one’s giving us any feedback.” Mr Cockrem said his partner’s children have been unable to swim in the property’s pool all summer due to the excessive bat excrement. He is planning to continue the push for more to be done to rid the area of the bats. “We have to keep fighting now,” he said. “We sat back last time when they left and look where we are again. We will start yelling louder. There needs to be a plan. Everyone around here that owns a property needs to know. They’ve all got invested property and no one has a clue what’s happening. There is no plan in place.”

Mareeba Shire’s unsung heroes and high achievers will be recognised at a special ceremony next Thursday evening. Family and friends are invited to attend the International Club from 6.30pm. Official proceedings will include the announcement of the Australia Day Awards winners followed by the cutting of the cake and a light supper. Mayor Tom Gilmore said the annual event is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate those people who have been nominated for their outstanding contributions or achievements in our Shire. “We are encouraging everyone to come along on Thursday night to celebrate what it means to be Australian and acknowledge those people in our local community who make such a difference,” Cr Gilmore said. “This year, we received 27 outstanding nomina-

tions of individuals and community groups who all, in some way or another, have made this Shire a better place.” Nominations include: Sharyn Banville Helen Bryce Kiara Cabassi Megan Cappella Di Curtis Lachlan Ford John Gordon Jamie Hewitt-Toms Tanya Jenkins Mateen Latif Patrick McLean Amelia Morris Bradley Newlands Carmelina Niceforo Megan O’Brien Rowena Petersen Elena Pilat Laura Price Del Richards Jake Simpson Trisha Spry Pam Strelnikoff Theresa Whiteing Mareeba Gymnastics Mareeba Mountain Goats Mareeba Junior Rugby League St Anthony’s P&F Association

Kiwis love Tom’s creative touch By Rebecca Wallis

Tom Cosic with his creation adorning the town of Rotorua, New Zealand.

Mareeba artists Tom Cosic and Eve Soemardi have returned from New Zealand winners after taking out the first prize in a major art competition. The creative duo were invited to take part in the Rotorua Mural Symposium, an inaugural event hosted by Rotorua Lakes Council. The theme was Mud and Steam, New Zealand’s Thermal Wonderland leaving Tom to research Rotorua prior to developing his composition. “He employed principals of Trompe L’oeil mural art to create depth and favoured the rich and vibrant colours that he has become well-known for,” said Eve. Eve played a support

role to Tom as he created the mural, a talent he has been honing for the past 35 years. “It was important for me to ensure the mural reflected the community that the public art would ultimately belong to,” said Tom. “I also wanted to bring my own style to it as well and focussed on vibrant colours and considerable detail as a point of difference. I especially wanted the girl to smile while looking directly at the viewer. Making a positive connection with the audience is especially important to me.” Tom is famous locally for painting the stunning mural that adorns the halls of the Mareeba Centre. The couple were presented with $10,000 as part of their winning prize.

FOURTEEN year old Ben Stacey is the only student from the Tablelands and one of only two in the Far North starting the trip of a lifetime in Switzerland this week, thanks to Rotary. Ben, from Jaggan near Malanda, flew to Zurich on the weekend and will spend a year in the European country as part of Rotary’s Youth Exchange Program. He will attend a Swiss school studying German, French and English among other subjects and live with three different families before taking a tour of Europe in June. Ben applied for the exchange last April undergoing a series of screening processes and interviews. His trip was made possible thanks to the financial contributions of Tablelands Regional Council mayor Joe Paronella and Member for Hill Shane Knuth. Mareeba Rotary sponsored his trip. “Matt Jacob, President of Mareeba Rotary and the committee came to the party at the eleventh hour to sponsor me. Without that sponsorship, I wouldn’t be going” said Ben. “I won’t be wasting any opportunities and I’m looking forward to meeting other Rotarians in Switzerland”. Ben’s wardrobe has undergone a complete makeover, going from the middle of a Far North summer to a snowy wonderland in the north’s winter. Fortunately, Rotary Switzerland throw in a ski and snowboard pass for the duration of students’ exchange and he’ll have a few months in the snowfields before the start of their official soccer season where he’s already been accepted into a team.

Pacific Island worker scheme off to a great start

A new scheme that engages Pacific Island workers with farm work on the Tablelands has got off to a great start with one Mareeba farmer calling it a winwin for everyone involved. Eight people from Vanuatu were employed through the scheme to work on Pinata’s pineapple farm in Mareeba. Under the scheme, employees are permitted to work in Australia for six months at a time and to return for consecutive

seasons after a six-month break. “We have a few, loyal returning Australian workers but generally Australians are unwilling to do manual farm work. Without international seasonal workers, it would be virtually impossible to manage harvesting. They are absolutely critical to the survival of Australia’s horticultural industry,” North Queensland operations manager Stephen Scurr said.

“The scheme is a winwin for us and our Pacific Island workers. There’s no need for us to source and train a new workforce each year, we are able to access workers who are happy to be here and the wages they earn in six months are equivalent to what they’d earn in three or four years at home. Unlike other international seasonal workers who work to fund their way around Australia, our Pacific Island workers are older people ranging from

their mid-30s to their mid50s - usually with families to support - who send their money home to directly contribute to their communities. “We also get a great bunch of people who are keen and happy to work and are a pleasure to work with. We’re just as excited when they come back as they are.” Mr Scurr said Piñata Farms became involved in the scheme after his brother, managing director

Gavin, saw first-hand the scale of devastation caused by Cyclone Pam when it struck Vanuatu in early 2016. “We thought the best we could do to help the region rebuild was to provide work at our farms. We now employ a labour provider to source and provide staff and manage their clearance to work here.” Mr Scurr said an ongoing challenge was to provide suitable short-term accommodation.

wide, accommodation sector (in selected locations) and tourism sector (the Northern Australia tourism pilot) that are unable to find enough Australian labour by providing access to workers from Pacific Island countries and Timor-Leste. The programme contributes to the economic development of eligible Pacific Island countries and Timor-Leste by providing access to low and unskilled work opportunities in Australia.

“Our goal is to have 50 people working in the Northern Territory by next year or the year after. However, finding accommodation for 50 people for six weeks of the year is a challenge. We’re able to provide accommodation and transport for the current intake and we’re talking to hostel providers in Darwin as our intake increases in the future.” The SWP assists Australian employers in the agriculture sector nation-

Growers concerned by the lack of rain

Mareeba Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro said Far North growers are concerned about the lack of rain to date this season and that if there is no significant rainfall soon, the agircultural sector will have a ‘significant downturn’. “The wet season has pretty much commenced with a lack of rain, so the dam (Tinaroo) is about 36 per cent so unless there is significant rain between now and July to bring us up around the 70s, there will be significant issues with

water supply,” he said. “So far there’s been less rain than usual at this time of year.” The growers will have their next water allocations announced on July 1. “That’s when the allocations for the next year are announced. This year we’re at 82 and that will continue to July 1 unless there’s rainfall between now and July 1,” said Mr Moro who is also chairman of the Mareeba-Dimbulah irrigation scheme. “It will have a direct flow on how strong the

agricultural industry will be. If we don’t get rain, it will be hardship among the farmers, so let’s hope it rains.” The season has to date never started with the dam at less than 60 per cent. The lowest the dam got to was 26 per cent in previous years but it filled up again through the wet season. “A lot of people are very worried,” said Mr Moro. “If it does rain and the dam fills up it will be business as usual. It all depends on the weather gods.”

Time to get ready for School!

Back to School tips Making school lunchboxes yummy, healthy and fun First time in Prep, moving up to a new class, or moving to a brand new school; young people can get butterflies about starting new things. Here are some tried and true tips that P&C’s QLD have collected to help you and your child through the back-to-school jitters.

BeFore scHool Starts

• For beginners take time to explain how the school day is structured (e.g. morning tea and lunch breaks, assembly, sports). • Visit the school. Time the journey and familiarise yourself with the route. • Try on the uniform: Do you have all the bits you need? Does it still fit? • Practise lunch box

choices and remember that a change is as good as a holiday. • Meet with friends who will be in the same class or are going to the same school. • Visit the library to borrow “getting ready for school” books.

front of your child. • Introduce yourself to other new parents and make plans for a coffee/chat. • Say goodbye so your child knows when you have gone.

on tHe First day

• Ask simple questions: “What’s one thing that made you happy today?” • Phone a favourite friend or relative to share school news. • Manage tiredness by limiting after-school activities for the first term. • Reassess the lunch box: What works best? What is still in the lunchbox at the end of the day? • Make sure your routine is working for everyone. And lastly good luck!

• Set a nice and easy routine to begin with (it may not stay that way). • Take time to settle your young child: find the classroom, help put their bag away, find a friend to talk to etc. • How is your child getting home? Make a meeting plan for the end of the day or remind your child that they are going to outside school hours care. • Stay calm and positive – at least in

There are lots of ways to get creative with School lunchboxes. If you’re a parent or carer of children, lots of tasks are competing for your attention. By the time you hit the supermarket aisle after a big week, it can feel overwhelming and lead to you reaching for easy food and drink choices that may not be best for your children’s health. Luckily, arming yourself with some simple tips and suggestions and early in the school year will set you up for success.

Focus on variety No matter what your child’s weight, height, gender or age, they need to eat from the five core food groups every day. Fruit and vegetables, wholegrain or rice based bread and crackers, meat or a meat alternative and reduced

Cheese and crackers, homemade pikelets, and an occasional sweet item (but not every day) can help teach your kids about a balanced diet. Plus always be aware of nut or other allergies that may rule some foods out completely. Make a plan Sometimes paper beats technology. Having a simple five-day planner on your fridge or whiteboard where you’ll see it will keep you on track. Divide your plan into four categories that will keep you focused on the core elements of a healthy lunch and you've got a simple formula to follow every day. Here's what you'll want to cover: Main item – whether

it’s a wholegrain sandwich, pasta, a frittata or a wrap, you want to anchor a healthy school lunch with something nutritious, tasty, and filling. Items that are high in protein, fibre, and healthy fats can leave young stomachs feeling full for longer. 1-3 serves of fruit and vegetables – packed full of nutrients and energy for growing bodies. A serve of reduced fat dairy – help ensure children develop healthy teeth and bones. A healthy snack – try something home-made and avoid pre-packaged foods that are high in sugar and starch. Make sure children have plenty of water available to drink too. Sometimes a frozen drink bottle can help keep it cool. Using an insulated lunch box or frozen foods to keep the food cold until eaten. Get creative with preparation Mix up your fruit and veggies – you can chop up different coloured veggies for dipping, make fruit kebabs and

freeze fruit like grapes and oranges, or cut watermelon in interesting shapes or slices. Remember to involve your children – let them be creative. Take them shopping and let them help choose fruits and vegetables and other healthy options for their lunchbox. They can also help prepare and pack their own school lunchbox. Why not be inspired by other food traditions? Bento boxes and sushi can help you add variety. Be inspired by some simple recipes There are many recipes available that are easy to prepare and can help jazz up the lunches throughout the week. Putting a little time into preparing and shopping well will pay off. Some easy suggestions are – Healthy wraps, mixed sandwiches, flavoured popcorn, veggie fritters and mini quiches, just to name a few. The internet is full of great recipe ideas.

2018 school term dates and holidays Education Minister Grace Grace has reminded parents and carers there is just days until the new school year begins. Ms Grace said Term 1, 2018, would start on 22 January, prior to the Australia Day public holiday, as was the case in 2017. “I hope everyone is enjoying a well-deserved, restful break so they can return to school feeling refreshed and ready to learn,” Ms Grace said. “Independent and Catholic schools base their holidays on the state school dates but can vary from school to school,’’ Ms Grace said. “I suggest families of students who attend

non-state schools, check with their individual school offices or websites for term dates.” State school teachers will return to work this Thursday and Friday (January 18-19) for professional development. Ms Grace said parents also should note Term 2 dates, which have been altered slightly to take into account transport logistics for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. “The Games will be held from April 4-15, representing a significant and long-awaited event for Queensland. Term 2 will start on Tuesday 17 April. “To ensure the best use of this additional holiday time for stu-

dents, teachers will be able to access an extra day of professional development on Monday 16 April. “The Department made the decision to delay the Term 2 commencement date following consultation with P&Cs Queensland, relevant unions and principals’ associations. “For the purposes of planning end of year holidays, parents of older students should note 16 November is the final date for Year 12 attendance and 30 November is the final date for attendance by students in Years 10 and 11.” For further information visit: www.education.qld.gov.au

Gymbaroo for Tableland Babies Ann-Marie Donnelly has been committed to early childhood development over the past 25 years. She has a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education and is the franchise owner and operator of Gymbaroo Far North Queensland. Ann-Marie has been teaching with Gymbaroo for more than 17 years. Ann-Marie’s experience has led her to travelling and training as a representative both nationally and internationally and has co-written the Kindyroo neurologically based Kindergarten program for overseas centres. In addition, she maintains her current role as research assistant for ongoing Gymbaroo projects. A recent study has shown that “kids learning ability increased dramatically after doing a Gymbaroo movement program….and the more often the better!” The study found that the average neurological age of the children participating in the Gymbaroo movement program 3 times per week increased by an average of nearly TWO years in the 10-12 month testing period: that’s DOUBLE what is normally expected of children of the same age! And those children who completed Gymbaroo activities 5 times per week showed even better results, jumping THREE years in their neu-

The study clearly showed a significant effect across children’s academic achievement. Those who completed Gymbaroo activities 5 times a week scored well above average on their Naplan results. Four wicket win for Atherton

Atherton 1st Grade put their best foot forward to entertain the old boys at Loder Park in their 1-day clash against competition leaders Mulgrave on Saturday as the club celebrated 30 years in the Cairns competition. In a rousing display of club spirit and under the watchful eyes of some of the club’s legends, the boys rallied to a 4 wicket win, chasing down 154 in 36 of their allotted 40 overs. Mulgrave elected to bat in good conditions and were restricted to 47 runs

Shane Legge and Don Martin.

at the half-way mark before the quality Mulgrave batting line-up fought back and went on to post 7-154. Bowlers, Seppe Barletta grabbed an early wicket, Dan Parnell took a brilliant caught and bowled, Tom Boorman trapped one LBW. Chris Adams executed the run-out of topscorer Justin Reid tipping the scales back in Atherton’s favour. Paul Nasser then chimed in hitting the stumps three times to take out the bowling honours with 3-36. Paul went on to be man-of-the-match in

a positive batting performance. Dan Parnell set the platform with 30, Tom Boorman took the pressure off the run-chase with 28 and Paul hit the winning runs to be unbeaten on 48. Atherton meet Rovers at Endeavour Park Cairns on 20th January in what is shaping up as a must-win with both teams vying for a spot in the 1-Day final. Result: Atherton 6-156 (P Nasser 48*, D Parnell 30, T Boorman 28) Def. Mulgrave 7-154 (P Nasser 3-36, S Barletta 1-18, T Boorman 1-30, D Parnell 1-34)

Giving kids the chance to reach their potential

Alex Srhoj from AVS working with MUFC juniors Logan Acha and Daniel Rossi in specialised elite training.

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

THE FNQ Football season may be a few months away, but AVS Football Academy is now kicking into gear to give kids across the Tablelands the opportunity to reach their full potential and academy enrolments now open and term 1 starting in week two of the new school term. AVS head coach Alex Srhoj is excited about the year ahead, with the first two terms in 2017 exceed-

ing all expectations with numbers high and Srhoj believes the talent coming through the ranks has only scratched the surface. “The talent across the Tablelands is massive,” he said. “We just need to create a environment where we can unlock their belief and the right attitude.” AVS is open to all kids aged seven years up to 15, with session times suited around school and club

training, with Srhoj insisting AVS will only help complement their development at club level. “AVS is here to help kids find the little bit more and complement their club training,” Srhoj stated. AVS has for the first time joined up with Caravella Football Academy in Cairns for a three day long National Training Camp to held in Cairns in mid April. “AVS was the only

academy in FNQ invited, it is a great opportunity for the kids, there are a heap of academies coming up from down south, some great coaches involved, it promises to something really enjoyable and challenging at the same time” Srhoj stated. Spots are filling fast for term one, registrations are now open call Alex Srhoj on 0403343692 or email admin@avsfa.com.au
