Rate rise fury

Locally owned and proudly independent

By Rebecca Wallis

Sid Rantucci, Dean Mitchell and Eddie Toffanello from Dimbulah Lions Club are hoping to raise money for charity while enjoying a night of entertainment with cricket legends.

Three cricket legends coming to Dimbulah By Rebecca Wallis

Three Australian cricket legends from the golden era of the sport have chosen to stop in Dimbulah later this month as part of a national tour. Former Australian test cricketers Doug Walters, Len Pascoe and Jeff Thomson were at the pinnacle of their game back in

the 1970s and are now using their notoriety for great things. The trio are touring the country as part of their ‘One for the road tour – Tales from the dressing room’ and Dimbulah’s Lions Club managed to convince the boys to make Dimbulah one of their scheduled stops. “We thought it would be

a fantastic opportunity to get them here and a great fundraiser,” said Lions Club President Eddie Toffanello. “We’re expecting a large crowd and there will be prizes, an auction and a BBQ.” The trio will be at the Junction Hotel on the evening of October 24 talking about the good old days of cricket, meet-

ing the locals, signing some memorabilia and recounting some of the most memorable moments of their heyday. Funds raised on the night will go towards supporting mental illness charities. Start of play is 7.30pm and tickets are $30 per person – to book your spot call Eddie on 0417 193 213.

Nearly 60 Tableland farmers came together last Tuesday night for a closed meeting to discuss the astronomical rises in their recent council rates. Tonight even more are expected to turn up to an open meeting at the Atherton International Club where the angry rate payers say they have been unfairly targeted. Thirteen farmers in the Atherton/Tolga/Kairi region have seen their rates shoot up by 50 per cent this year with over 40 others also struggling with massive increases that will see them paying tens of thousands of dollars in fees for services they say they don’t receive. “If you hand money over to someone you expect something in return,” said Paul Pensini. “Collectively our rates (for multiple properties) will go up to $125,000 a year and I don’t know what we get for it. I would challenge any one of them (Tablelands Regional Councillors) to tell me what I get for it. “We slash our own farms, we mow the road side verge. We don’t mind paying an increase if you could see better services, better roads and slashing

and everything getting done and better gardens in the main street but there is a clear pattern from the council – it’s like they don’t want the farmers.” But Tablelands Regional Council say the rises are in line with the Queensland Valuer-General’s land valuations which were conducted on the Tablelands earlier this year for the first time since 2014. For some property owners that meant their properties had decreased in value and for others it had risen, in some cases by nearly 100 per cent. The council base their rates on these valuations. “Rural land categories were the most impacted by the new valuations, with some areas experiencing large increases in land value while other areas saw decreases,” said Tablelands Regional Council mayor Joe Paronella. “An increase in land valuation indicates an increase in the overall resale value. According to DNRM (the Department of Natural Resources and Mines), this was mainly due to underpinning demand for intensive grazing land and continuing market demand for premium agricultural land. “Like all Councils in Queensland, TRC rates continued P3

national police day

Officers unite to remember fallen Inspector Rolf Straatemeier salutes the officers as they pass by on Byrnes Street during the March last Friday.

By Rebecca Wallis

The public lined the streets of Mareeba last Friday morning to pay tribute to fallen Tablelands police officers and Queensland Police staff members. National Police Remembrance Day is held annually on the Tablelands, with Mareeba host-

ing this year’s event. Police officers, dignitaries and family members marched through the main street on September 29 and on to the Abundant Life Centre on Walsh Street where Police Chaplain Reverend Allan Sharpe held a service for the men and women who have helped serve our community. “I’d like to acknowl-

edge the family members of the fallen officers,” said Inspector Rolf Straatemeier. “Each officer on the honour roll has lost their life while making the community a safer place. “It is extremely important that we remember them, and we shall.” The Tablelands Patrol Group has lost 14 officers in the line of duty since

the first recorded death in 1872. The most recent was 29 year old constable Casey Blain who died in 2013 after his vehicle struck a bridge at Routh Creek about 15km east of Georgetown. “This is the most significant event on the police calendar,” Inspector Straatemeier said to around 100 attendees of the service.

“No greater sacrifice can be made than what these men and women have lost.” Over the past 12 months the Tablelands Patrol has also lost three members to illness including Father John Newman, constable Louise Rlimon and Mareeba admin officer Coral Smith. They were all honoured at the service.

Australia Day award nominations open JOURNALIST Rebecca Wallis

Nominations for the 2018 Mareeba Shire Council Australia Day Awards are now open. Mayor Tom Gilmore said the awards are an opportunity to recognise Mareeba Shires' unsung heroes who have done extraordinary things for

or on behalf of the community. “This year we would be delighted if nominations focus on the quiet achievers, who are rarely recognised or rewarded for their efforts,” Cr Gilmore said. “We all know someone who puts in an extraordi-

nary effort anonymously and quietly on behalf of the community. “This year, let's celebrate those people.” Nominations are not bound by specific categories this year. The judging panel will determine awards based upon appli-

cation, in order of merit. Awards will be given to groups, events or individuals for outstanding contributions in the sporting, community and cultural fields. “We strongly encourage everyone to nominate someone they know to be

considered for an Australia Day Award,” Cr Gilmore said. There will be a special ceremony to celebrate the nominees and winners at the Mareeba International Club on the evening of Thursday 25 January 2018. The event will also

include a Citizenship Ceremony. Nomination forms are available from the Mareeba Shire Council Customer Service Centres in Mareeba and Kuranda, or online at www.msc.qld. gov.au. Entries close Monday December 18, 2017.

Farmers furious

Farmers from the Tablelands Regional Council area turned up to last Thursday’s monthly meeting in hope their questions would be answered.

From P1 land based on the Local Government Regulation 2012. This regulation stipulates that councils must calculate the rates for land by using the rateable value of the land. TRC has carried out a comparison against other regional and rural councils and this comparison highlights that TRC’s rates for rural properties are at the lower end of the spectrum.” But the land owners say that the council have

the power to spread the individual increases across the region to help ease the burden on the minority who have been hit hard. “The council don’t have to go on those land valuations, they can adjust it, but they’ve chosen not to adjust it,” said Mr Pensini. “They’re thinking those people are in the golden triangle, they can afford it now let’s give them the big whack. That’s how it seems anyway.” The farmers say that

such financial stress will have an impact on individuals and the community as a whole. “I have spoken to a few people and some of them are starting to get depressed,” said Eddie Floreancig. “And if anything starts happening to the people of this community – they’ve got a lot to answer for. You can’t put pressure on people to that extreme in situations like this.” Mr Pensini said the

farmers in the region feel discriminated against by their local council. “We’ve just got to keep absorbing these costs and shrinking our margins until what? Until we’re finished,” he said. “Look at the dairy industry. They’re down to 30 farmers there. Millaa Millaa’s just a dying town and Malanda will be dead as soon as that factory closes. We can make a noise but no one wants to listen.” The farmers say the

knock on effects of the high rate costs will be felt throughout the region. “The farmers are the backbone of this whole shire and that’s taking nothing away from any other businesses but that’s just fact,” said Mr Pensini. “We might not make money some years, we might just break even and make wages but we still spend the same money in the town every year to plant the crops that we’ve got to plant. Each region has their

single driving economy – ours is agriculture. “It isn’t tourism and it’s not mining – it’s agriculture. So why would you bite the hand that feeds you? They need to help these people prosper. “ The farmers concede they could have challenged the DNRM over the land valuations when they were issued but say they did not know it would have such a massive effect on their rates. Wednesday’s (Oct 4) meeting starts at 7.30pm.

Mareeba residents can be assured of a seamless transition of the bulk-billing clinic that opened at the Mareeba Hospital on Tuesday. Amaroo Medical Community Clinic officially took over Mareeba Hospital’s Clinic yesterday, Tuesday 3 October, guaranteeing ongoing supply of GP services to the community. The service will be situated in the same location as the clinic currently operated by Mareeba Hospital. The new service will be independently owned and operated, and provide bulk-billing and extended after-hours services from the hospital site to local residents. Bookings can be made by contacting Amaroo Medical Community Clinic on (07) 4092 4632. Walk-in patients are welcome. Clinic hours are: Monday to Friday: 8.30am - 5:30pm and Saturday: 8:30am – 11.30am (excluding public holidays). Significant work has been undertaken through the combined efforts of the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) and the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service to ensure primary healthcare services continued in Mareeba following the cessation of COAG funding on 30 September.

Mens Shed saved from crippling council rates By Rebecca Wallis

Tablelands Regional Councillors have decided to revisit the decision to charge Atherton Men’s Shed $5000 in council rates. The community group which offers men an opportunity to engage in the community was hit with a rates notice for the first time in their six year history after a change in their lease arrangements. The group meets at the old train station on Railway Lane in

Atherton – which it leases from the Department of Transport and Main Roads. “What council did in issuing us a rates notice is perfectly legal and we’ve got no problem with that except that we didn’t have the ability to pay,” said treasurer of the club Brian Brown. “We’re a penny and dime organisation. Our membership here consists of about 51 at $40 a year. We get the majority of our income from donations from the community.” The group went to

their local councillor Katrina Spies to see if anything could be done and the issue was raised at last Thursday’s monthly meeting. “They do a lot of good work in the community,” she said. “I don’t want to see the Men’s Shed doors close. I want to put up that we resolve to exempt them from rating for charitable purposes. “It’s run by volunteers and I feel really strongly about it.” The councillors debated the issue before deciding to

give the group a 12 month reprieve and look further into it. “We’re very happy with the outcome and Katrina’s done a great job in representing us. We’re very appreciative,” said Mr Brown. “This gives us an opportunity to be involved in the council’s study into the not for profit sector, to get a reasonable outcome. “We will be in meaningful discussion between now and June because I want a resolution to this situation before March. We don’t want to be going into this

next period without knowing because in effect we’ve got to raise $100 a week at this current level, which in our current modelling we can’t do.” The Men’s Shed earned $3800 in profit last financial year. The group say they would not be able to afford to continue if they had to pay $5000 in rates annually. “A lot of men come here not to do physical work but to have a chat,” said Mr Brown. “We’ve got a lot of elderly members and a lot of

members that are mentally disabled so we don’t have a lot of members that can get out there and earn money for us. “Mentally I’ve never heard of men talk about health issues but I’m starting to hear it here, describing their prostrate procedure or cancer procedures. We have people coming to give talks on it now which is great.” Mr Brown said relocating to another building would be difficult due to the noise generated by the machinery they use and the

space they need. “When we got this building it was perfect and then we went five and a half years without hearing from anyone. And then all of a sudden we got these notices,” said Mr Brown. “When a body takes a lease from the State Government – that triggers a notice to the Department of Natural Resources which then triggers a valuation. That valuation is then automatically charging rates. We’re not questioning that. What we are questioning is that we can’t afford it.”

Queensland LNP Senator James McGrath visited the Tablelands last week for a tour of the sugar mill and a catch up with Mareeba Shire mayor Tom Gilmore. Senator McGrath was on the Tablelands as part of a listening tour of regional Queensland. After a ‘general chat’ with Cr Gilmore, the senator took a tour of MSF Sugar’s $75 million Green Energy Power Plant, currently under construction. “The green energy power plant blew me away in

terms of the investment from MSF Sugar into the mill and obviously the broader district,” Senator McGrath said. “MSF Sugar is very forward thinking and I think the owners and all the growers should be congratulated for their long term investment in the mill and the district.” With a number of coalfired power stations tipped to close over the next decade, Senator McGrath was able to see first-hand how fibre from cane can be transformed into baseload

power. The power plant will turn a 100 per cent sugar cane fibre product known as bagasse into electricity when it comes online mid next year, with other products like blue agave also in the mix to supplement the cane. When asked whether agriculture could be part of the answer to Australia’s future baseload electricity source, Senator McGrath said a range of options were on the table. “The Prime Minister has been very clear on this – we

want people to have affordable and reliable electricity,” Senator McGrath said. “Whether it comes from coal, solar, wind or burning bagasse, we want to make sure in Australia in the 21st century when you turn on your light switch, power comes through. “It’s about having a range of energy options so people have affordable electricity. Could agriculture be an option – totally.” “It’s very exciting what is happening here on the Tablelands,” Senator McGrath said.

More Chinese to visit the region By Rebecca Wallis

KUR World’s Ken Lee was touring the Tablelands last Friday with a group of journalists from China in a bid to promote the region to his home country. Mr Lee said Tablelands package holidays would be created for Chinese tourists utilising the new Southern China Airlines flights coming into Cairns three times a week which will start in December. “We are going to create a package that will take in Cairns and parts of the Tablelands,” said the Kuranda-based businessman from the Golden Drop Winery on Friday. “Hopefully it will be up and running by February and will initially see 30 to 40 tourists a week visit the region with that number increasing over time.” Mr Lee was accompanied on his tour with the president of the Macau Chamber of Commerce. The group spent time in Millaa Millaa before trav-

Mareeba Lioness Club president Kathy Garozzo praised the continued generous support of the community, with all money raised going towards supporting the Cancer Council Queensland local services, as well as to Cancer research. “The support received was amazing, it was such a great day and we thank the community for their con-

Cancer Council Queensland regional fundraising coordinator Jenny Coates praised the Lionesses’ amazing efforts. “It’s amazing. The money raised means we can put it towards our local services, such as the Marylyn Mayo Lodge in Cairns which provides cancer sufferers with accommodation, health services

and transport to and from hospital. “Any residents undergoing treatment, especially Mareeba residents and surrounds, can stay for free in Cairns when getting treatment done and also transport to and from hospital. “We also have a free wig and turban service and a full time councillor for cancer sufferers,” “The over arching goal of Cancer Council Queensland is to beat cancer, so every bit raised it vital to achieving this goal and last over $11m was put towards research.”

But when it is time for the animals to be released back into the wild, the carers need help. “We need people who can open up their properties for the soft release of the wild animals,” said Clelia Croxford from Tablelands Wildlife Rescue. “This means the release of animals such as young wallabies that we have reared since they were orphaned. They need to be released carefully so they will

survive in the wild.” There are certain parameters that must be met regarding the location and type of property where these special animals can be released. The intended release site must be classed as “rural” and preferably bordering on State Forrest, National Park or World Heritage; the site must not border a main highway; the site would preferably have a reasonable portion (more than 50 per cent) of natural

habitat and a natural water source at least nearby; and it cannot be land locked by cleared agricultural land or suburbia. Anyone who thinks they might have a suitable property should email the groups with contact details and a brief description. To contact Tablelands Wildlife Rescue email info@tablelandswildliferescue.com and to contact FNQ Wildlife Rescue email secretary@fnqwr.com.au.

Council urges care after dog attack in Chillagoe

Mayor Tom Gilmore is urging dog owners to be responsible after a child was attacked last weekend in Chillagoe. Council understands the 12-year-old was visiting the small town with his family when two dogs attacked him in the main street. The boy received several wounds to his legs and was initially treated in Chillagoe, then at the Mareeba Hospital before being transferred to Cairns for surgery on his leg. Mayor Tom Gilmore said that everyone has the right to feel safe in a pub-

lic place. “All dog owners would like to think their pet won’t show aggression towards other animals or people, but it can and does happen for many reasons,” Cr Gilmore said. “This is a timely reminder that all dogs must be on a leash at all times outside your property and under continuous supervision. You are responsible for the actions of your dog.” Over the past three months, Council has received 42 complaints of dangerous or aggressive dogs. Cr Gilmore said it is

important to report any incident involving an aggressive dog. “Council takes dog attacks very seriously. We will not tolerate people letting their dog wander at large harming other animals or people,” he said. “There are laws in place to protect our community and penalties apply if people do not follow these requirements of owning a dog.” Council is currently conducting an animal inspection program to ensure that dog owners are meeting registration require-

ments. Cr Gilmore said the purpose of the program is also to ensure that owners comply with their duty to provide a safe and secure enclosure to prevent the animal from wandering. “Owners can receive serious fines if their dog is found roaming at large, and if they’re unregistered there are even more serious consequences,” he said. All dogs in Queensland must be registered by law. Council followed due process and the dogs involved in the incident were surrendered and euthanised on Monday afternoon.

Award nomination for CHHHS for treating Hep C

A team at Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service have been nominated for an award for their collaboration in treating Hepatitis C. Their work at Lotus Glen Correctional Centre has earned them a place as finalists in the 2017 Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN)

Awards for Practice Nurse of the Year. Cairns Sexual Health Director Dr Darren Russell said that the nomination was recognition of the excellent collaboration across teams in treating Hepatitis C at the Correctional Centre. “Health Service staff members from various ar-

eas have been involved, from Sexual Health, to Gastroenterology, to Lotus Glen staff. “Since the availability of a new, improved Hepatitis C drug last year, the team has worked together to treat all inmates with the disease. “Lotus Glen is now 100 per cent free of Hepatitis

C, which is a fantastic result considering that usually forty five per cent of the population in prisons across Australia have the disease.” The winners of the NQPHN Annual Health Professional Awards were announced at their 2017 Awards Evening event in Townsville on Friday.

Graeme Ford and Andrew Ford from Hansen Ford Mareeba together with Tom Draper (centre).

A motoring era ends After thirty five and a half years as a Ford Dealer to the Atherton and Hinterland areas, Tom Draper from Hiland Ford, has decided to release some pressure from his busy lifestyle and sell his franchise area to his close neighbours, Graeme and Andrew Ford, of Hansen Ford Mareeba. The business changed hands at the end of September to new owners Graeme and Andrew who are keen to maintain the same high standards of service and sales that Tom maintained for all that time. Tom started his business life in a small garage at a service station on the 1st January, 1970. After three or so years

he purchased the block next door and built a large workshop fixing all things mechanical from scrapers to lawn mowers. He also specialised in wheel alignments with the best possible Hunter alignment equipment at the time. On March 4, 1982 he was appointed as a Ford Dealer to the Atherton area and spent many happy and productive years selling and maintaining the very large fleet of Fords in the area. It is with great sadness that he has decided to leave the business after all this time but realises it is time to pursue his other interests in life. Tom would like to thank everyone over the

years that have done business with him and says that if he had his time over he would do it all again. The modern premise on Tolga Road has now closed and all enquiries about sale and service of Ford vehicles and products should be directed to Hansen Ford in Mareeba. For Mahindra owners Tom would like to advise that he is negotiating the sale of the franchise with some prospective new dealers and when he has an outcome all owners will be advised of who their new dealer will be for ongoing maintenance and sales. For enquiries please call Tom on 0418 183 222.

Celebrate the Bicentenary of Baha’u’llah’s birth LOCALS are invited to join in the celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the birth of the founder of the world wide Baha'i Faith – Baha'u'llah. “Let your vision be world embracing” – Bahá’u’lláh. Throughout history, God has sent to humanity a series of divine Educators, known as Manifestations of God, whose teachings have provided the basis for the advancement of civilization. These Manifestations have included Abraham, Krishna, Zoroaster, Moses, Buddha, Jesus, and Muhammad. Bahá’u’lláh, the latest of these messengers, explained that the religions of the world come from the same Source and are in essence successive chapters of one religion from God. Bahá’í ís believe the crucial need facing humanity is to find a unifying vision of the future of society and of the nature and purpose of life. Such a vision unfolds in the writings of Bahá’u’lláh. In thousands of locations around the world, the teachings of the Bahá’í Faith inspire individuals and communities as they work to improve their own

lives and contribute to the advancement of civilization. Bahá’í beliefs address such essential themes as the oneness of God and religion, the oneness of humanity and freedom from prejudice, the inherent nobility of the human being, the progressive revelation of religious truth, the development of spiritual qualities, the integration of worship and service, the fundamental equality of the sexes, the harmony between religion and science, the centrality of justice to all human endeavours, the importance of education, and the dynamics of the relationships that are to bind together individuals, communities, and institutions as humanity advances towards its collective maturity. From October 16 to 20 to celebrate the founders birth and to coincide with functions all over the world, there will be a day stall in the original Kuranda Markets, plus a function in Atherton on October 22 (the actual birth date) and a market stall and evening meeting in Cooktown on Saturday October 7. The LAND Region praised for its innovation REPRESENTATIVES of a key Queensland agricultural lobby group have given a glowing endorsement of the Tablelands region, praising its innovative qualities and resilience after a recent visit. Growcom chairman Les Williams and Hort360 innovation coach Steve Tiley both attended the recent Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Industry dinner earlier this month where they were able to meet face-to-face with several local farmers. Mr Tiley said he travelled to the Tablelands region on a monthly basis from Townsville to work with five farmers implementing Growcom’s Hort360 program, a computer based risk assessment tool covering everything from finance through to water quality. The program enables farmers to get a “360 degree view” of their business operations, identifying potential risks, capitalising on opportunities and highlighting unnecessary farm expenses. “There is a lot of innovation going on in the region at the moment and we’re trying to help our growers achieve more of it, along with accessing some of the funding to support that,” Mr Tiley said. “I’m working with those five growers to look

at where they’re going to be in five or 10 years time, whether there’s any technology that might impact their business in the future and how we can help them with that changing management process of growth and technology to work out if they’re entitled to any government or industry assistance. “We also mentor and coach them. Rather than just looking at one aspect of the business, we establish a good relationship where we can come in and be that person responsible for innovation on the farm and guide them through the process.” Mr Tiley said there had been an “excellent” response from farmers to Hort360 since it was rolled out about 12 months ago, with the region’s future looking promising. “You’ve got the whole climatic range up there with tree crops, vegetable crops and crops which could be grown for the Asian market,” he said. “There’s great logistics and infrastructure combined with enthusiastic people.” Mr Williams said he discussed a range of issues with local farmers on his visit, including labour and power costs, water and the threat posed by the importation of limes from the South Pacific. The Sunshine Coast

pineapple farmer said the Tablelands region was a “vibrant agricultural area”. “You’ve got fertile land and very committed and intelligent growers who are doing a brilliant job,” he said. “It’s good to see the industry is diversifying into other areas, such as limes and avocados.” Both men praised the Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association’s annual Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year Award. “I think the award is fantastic and all of the nominees were brilliant,” Mr Williams said. Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president and Growcom director Joe Moro said Growcom’s presence in the Tablelands region was both welcome and important to driving future growth of the industry as well as giving local farmers a voice. “By working closely with Growcom, we can not only continue to drive innovation in our region but ensure any issues growers have are brought to the attention of powerbrokers at both a State and Federal level,” he said. “I have no doubt that agriculture in the Tablelands region will continue to have a strong and important voice for decades to come.”

SUGAR REPORTS MOSSMAN MILL CRUSHING STATISTICS WEEK 16 Mossman Mill plant availability and throughput was above budget for Week 16. The factory processed 36,811 tonnes of cane at an average crushing rate of 318 tonnes/hour. Wet weather early in the week caused some cane supply interruptions but allowed for some shutdown maintenance to be scheduled while offline. Other downtime for the week was for repairs to the feedwater control valve on the Thompson Boiler which failed during a blackout caused from an electrical fault at the Cassowary Substation. The prepared cane elevator stopped when a rake came loose and jammed on the return. Several milling trips for high chest pressures during the week also resulted in the boilers tripping on low drum pressures. CCS remained steady this week. The production of Brand JA sugar has continued during the week. • Total for week: 36,811 tonnes • CCS for week: 14.17 • Total cane crushed to date: 630,507 tonnes • CCS average to date: 12.98 • 2017 crop estimate: 882,000 tonnes

TABLELAND MILL CRUSHING STATISTICS WEEK 17 To date the mill has crushed 468,065 tonnes with a season to date CCS of 13.99. • Total for week: 24,683 tonnes • CCS for week: 15.17 • Total cane crushed to date: 468,065 tonnes • CCS average to date: 13.99 • 2017 crop estimate: 730,000 tonnes

reeba District Fruit and Vegetable Industry dinner earlier this month, Favco business manager John Nardi said Mr Avolio had proven there was a viable international market for locally-grown produce. “To prove the protocol, it was important that we landed fruit over there,” Mr Nardi said. “Marcello was my only registered grower and I had the utmost confidence in his ability. He’s a great grower and his attention to detail is very particular.” Mr Avolio had to meet strict biosecurity requirements for his export batch of lychees that pro-

hibited the use of certain pesticides and fungicides which were banned in the US. The fruit had to be packed in pest-proof polypropylene bags sealed with cable ties and the export crop itself was audited to ensure it met all requirements. Once picked, the lychees were then sent to Brisbane to be irradiated before being flown to the US. “The US importers were very impressed by the fruit quality. They loved it. It went through the market very quickly,” Mr Nardi said. “They thought it was probably some of the

best imported lychees they’ve had in the US. “This is one of the best regions for growing lychees.” Mr Nardi said Mr Avolio’s success proved Mareeba and Tablelands produce was ripe for export, provided there was favourable weather conditions and growers met the right biosecurity requirements. The pilot program is now in its final year, with Mr Avolio registering for it once again. “We’re intending to have another go again this year. It’s a slowgrowing market but hopefully it will blossom,” Mr Nardi said.
