Toffanello to trek the Outback in support of Flying Doctors DIMBULAH local Eddie Toffanello is gearing up for the Outback Car Trek 2019 beginning on June 2. The Outback Car Trek is an annual event which raises muchneeded funding for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), and consists of a 12 day trek where older 2WD cars venture across the beautiful Australian Outback. This year is all the more special as it marks the trek’s 30 year anniversary, with the trekkers having raised in excess of $28 million since its inception in 1990. The goal for 2019’s trek is to reach the target of $30 million. The trek will start in Renmark in South Australia and finishes at Vesteys Bay in the Northern Territory on June 14, and Mr Toffanello noted his excitement about the upcoming trip. “This is my third year participating in the Outback Car Trek and it is such a great event – I wish I had started doing it earlier,” he said. “I’m doing it again this year with two good friends of mine Mick Hefferman and Phillip Thrift who live in Sydney.” “So we will be making the trek in our Ford Sedan and we have named our team ‘Team Kubota’.” Mr Toffanello said not only is the trek fun and enjoyable, he alluded to how pleased he is that he gets to do it in support of such a worthwhile service like the RFDS. “It’s such a wonderful cause because we all know how important the Royal Flying Doctor Service is, particularly to those living in rural areas,” he said. “Just about every person I speak to in Outback Australia has had an incident that has required

the assistance of the RFDS, so that gives you an idea of just how essential a service it really is. “For myself personally, I enjoy going to remote places to fish, camp and trek, so I never know when I might need their help – that is why I’m so passionate about supporting them and everything they do for us.” Entering a car in the Outback Car Trek costs each team $7,500, and Mr Toffanello said he
wouldn’t have been able to participate in this year’s event without the generosity of Alex Arena from Casali’s Mareeba as well as the Dimbulah Lions Club. “Casali’s and Kubota Australia kindly donated a $7000 Kubota ride-on mower for us to auction off at a golf day in Sydney,” he said. “He is helping us immensely and it’s great to see a local Mareeba business showing their sup-
port. “I also want to acknowledge the Dimbulah Lions Club; they have donated $2000 which will go towards the trek. “I am so grateful for their input and I am honoured to put their funding towards the RFDS.” Casali’s Mareeba’s Alex Arena said he is privileged to be a part of something that helps an important service like the RFDS along with prominent members of
the community. “I enjoy supporting local people who participate in good causes, and Eddie is one of those people,” he said. “Also, Eddie is someone who supports local business so that’s why I wanted to get involved.” The community is always one that is willing to give back, and Eddie Toffanello, Casali’s Mareeba and the Dimbulah Lions are yet another example of that.
Teams gear up for 2019 Great Wheelbarrow Race MORE than 400 competitors will compete in this year's McDonald's Great Wheelbarrow Race. Race Chair, Cr Nipper Brown said final preparations are being made ahead of next weekend's 140km endurance event. “We are gearing up for what is promising to be a great week-
end,” Cr Brown said. “We have four solo competitors, two duos, three trios and 37 teams registered which is really good.” Cr Brown said one of this year's highlights is the Byrnes Street downtown parade. “The downtown parade is
back this year and we really hope everyone comes down at 9am to cheer the teams on.” Cr Brown said this year's event would not be possible without the support of the major partners including McDonald's, Bendigo Bank, Amaroo Medical and IOR Petroleum.
“I’d like to thank all our sponsors including the Mareeba Shire Council. Without all these generous sponsors this community event would simply not happen," he said. “I’d also like to thank our committee for their time and hard work in the lead-up to the
event and also to all the volunteers who have put up their hand to help over the weekend, thank you.” The Great Wheelbarrow Race will be held from May 17-19, commencing in Mareeba with the downtown parade along Byrnes St on Friday morning.

Croc sightings raise concerns BY JOSEPH BARCLAY
THE Department of Environment and Science (DES) were at Two Mile Creek in Biboohra yesterday to place a crocodile trap after two recent sightings of what is believed to be a saltwater crocodile that is approximately 3.5 metres in length. The first sighting was reported on Good Friday; however it wasn’t until there was a second sighting reported on Tuesday that the Department of Environment and Science made the decision to deploy the trap. A Biboohra Sands Director Sam Musumeci said it was one of his employees who spotted the saltwater crocodile on Tuesday. “My view is that the Department should be proactive in eradicating crocodiles seen in this area as this is a no tolerance zone,” he said. “They are an introduced species and we need to get them out of our water systems up here.” Mr Musumeci said given that crocodiles are naturally an elusive animal, DES should be doing everything to ensure there aren’t any unaccounted for. “They shouldn’t be waiting for residents to notify them of a sighting,” he said. “We were told there aren’t any left after there were a couple removed some years ago, but clearly they are still around.” Brodie Moloney from Top End Crocodile Service said enough is not being done to quell the saltwater crocodile population in Mareeba.
“The saltwater crocodiles in Mareeba along the Two Mile Creek system and into Lake Mitchell are introduced,” he said. “A nearby crocodile farm that opened about 20 years ago has been losing crocodiles for years. “Nowadays the farm is very secure, but these animals that have escaped years before hang around the creek system and get flushed into Lake Mitchell every wet season - the habitat in that lake is perfect for crocodiles and they potentially could be breeding which will expand the feral population.” Mr Moloney noted that the government officials who remove crocodiles around the Cairns area do a great job, however he said it’s a different story up here. “I have conducted surveys on a few farms now around Two Mile Creek and over the last few years I have estimated that there is around 20- 40 individual feral crocodiles in Two Mile Creek and Lake Mitchell,” he said. “I have also received sighting reports from the upper reaches of the Mitchell River where saltwater crocodiles have never been seen that far upstream.” Mr Moloney said he would like to see Queensland adopt the Northern Territory’s laws which allows crocodile contractors and landowners to apply for a permit to trap and remove rogue and problem crocodiles. “In Queensland we can’t do that – there are plenty of people in the crocodile industry who

would catch and remove the feral population of salties in Mareeba if they were given a permit to do so,” he said. “I don’t understand how the department acknowledges the fact that these are feral crocodiles, but does not prioritise these animals for removal, because as time goes on the problem gets worse, and as the animals get
bigger, they could potentially be breeding. “What are the department waiting for – someone’s dog, cow or even a person to be taken?” A spokesperson from the Department of Environment and Science said crocodiles that pose a threat to human safety are targeted for removal under the Queensland Crocodile Manage-

TABLELAND residents will have the opportunity to cast their vote for this year’s Federal Election earlier than Saturday May 18 with a pre-polling booth being set up in Mareeba and Atherton over the coming week and a half. For those wanting to vote early in person, there will be a pre-polling booth starting today in Mareeba at the old RSL building, and one at St Mary’s Anglican Church in Atherton.
MAREEBA EARLY VOTING CENTRE – OLD RSL BUILDING ON 88 BYRNES STREET: • Wednesday 8 May – Friday 10 May (8:30am – 5:30pm) • Monday 13 May – Tuesday 14 May (8:30am – 5:30pm) • Wednesday 15 May (8:30am – 6pm) • Thursday 16 May (8:30am – 5:30pm) • Friday 17 May (8:30am – 6pm)
Election FEDERAL ELECTION 2019
THERE certainly wasn’t a lack of political jawing or heated debate last Tuesday as the Mareeba Leagues Club played host to the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce’s Kennedy Federal Election debate. Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter, ALP candidate Brett McGuire, LNP candidate Frank Beveridge and the United Australia Party’s candidate Sue Betuch all made their case as to why they would be the right person to represent the people of the Kennedy electorate. Each politician was given the chance to make opening statements before being asked a variety of questions from the community members in attendance. The candidates were then asked to drive home the core message of their campaign as they were allocated five minutes at the end of the debate to make their final pitch to the voters watching on attentively. The most intensely discussed issues throughout the debate were water allocation, land clearing laws, agriculture, energy prices and jobs. BOB KATTER
In Mr Katter’s closing statement, his message spoke directly to the region’s farmers as he alluded to his disdain of the current free market system in place. “Please my fellow Australians, we Australians are patriotic and we are not going to stand
aside and listen to this absolute ‘BS’ about free markets,” he said. “Every farmer on Earth gets 41% of his or her income from the Government, except if you’re an Australian farmer – you only get 5.6%. “Talk to us about free markets
when you’ve only got two people to sell food to, Woolworths and Coles. “If you vote for the LNP or ALP, you are voting for a continuation of those policies. Yes we might fail, but we will fail fighting for the good.”
BRETT MCGUIRE
comes from – I’m just a family man living in Charters Towers who was born and raised out at Julia Creek,” he said. “Small towns are where my heart is, and small towns extend all the way across Kennedy because we are a large community made up of a lot of very small communities.
“My heart lives in making sure these small communities thrive, because when they’re going, the larger regional centres will see the flow-on effect.” A prosperous future for children in the electorate was a big part of Mr McGuire’s pitch. “It’s important to see that our children have a future in Ken-
nedy,” he said. “It’s hard for our communities to grow and prosper if they’re not getting the services they need, and that’s why a stronger education and health system is so important for the Kennedy electorate and in particular our children.”
In true Bob Katter style, the Federal Member for Kennedy spoke with immense passion and was willing to go head-to-head with any candidate he felt was being disingenuous in their approach to a question.
ATHERTON EARLY VOTING CENTRE – ST MARY’S ANGLICAN CHURCH ON 36 ALICE STREET: • Wednesday 8 May – Friday 10 May (8:30am –5:30pm) • Monday 13 May – Tuesday 14 May (8:30am –5:30pm) • Wednesday 15 May (8:30am – 6pm) • Thursday 16 May (8:30am – 5:30pm) • Friday 17 May (8:30am – 6pm)
Labor Candidate Brett McGuire took a very personable approach, speaking in-depth about personal experience and how that inspired him to use that as a way to make the change he feels the electorate wants to see. “I think it’s important for you to know where a candidate

KENNEDY CANDIDATES: Sue Bertuch (United Australia Party), Brett McGuire (Labor), Frank Beveridge (LNP) and Bob Katter (Katter’s Australian Party) at the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce federal election debate last Tuesday.
FRANK BEVERIDGE
Given that the Liberal National Party are the current government in power on the national level, Kennedy's LNP candidate Frank Beveridge was under plenty of fire throughout the debate for the perceived shortcomings of Scott Morrison and company yet it was a storm he weathered
SUE BERTUCH
While she may not have the political pedigree of the fellow candidates she was debating, the United Australia Party's Kennedy candidate Sue Bertuch certainly didn't look out of place. Ms Bertuch closed the debate
exceptionally well. A common concern that is shared by Far North Queensland residents is the lack of funding and opportunity that is afforded to the region, however that is something Mr Beveridge noted is not the case under the LNP's watch. "The LNP has delivered
$750 million for roads in North Queensland along with record spending for health and education in regional areas," he said. “If you look at our history, such as the NAIF (Northern Australia Infrastructure Fund) for example – no other party has guaranteed that kind of money for northern Australia, and
that's above and beyond normal spending. “So I think despite what was said today, the LNP has delivered on its promises. “In saying that, there's a lot more LNP could do for this region, which is why they need a local member.”
by outlining why Kennedy residents should vote for the UAP. “I'm a member of a great group of people,” she said. “151 people put their hands up like I did for the United Australia Party – we're not politicians, we're everyday working
people who have said “we've had enough”. “I personally have had enough of nothing being done in my electorate, and we need to ensure we protect the industries which build this country, a lot of which are in North Queensland,
which I feel the United Australia Party will do.” With the Federal Election just ten days away, it will be intriguing to see whose message appealed the most to the voters of Kennedy.
Mayor leads advocacy group MAREEBA Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore will lead the Far North Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils (FNQROC) Mayoral Delegation in Brisbane next week. Six Mayors and one Deputy Mayor from the far north Queensland will have the opportunity to meet with over 20 Ministers and Shadow Ministers, including, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to advocate on identified priorities for
far north Queenslanders. “As Chair of FNQROC, it is imperative that I attend and ensure that the most important issues are pressed with some vigour,” Cr Gilmore said. “On behalf of Mareeba Shire Council, I will be raising the Kuranda Range Road, Nullinga Dam, Yellow Crazy Ants and the Burke Developmental Road, as our most imperative issues for the future.” The delegation will meet
with key decision makers including; the Hon Jackie Trad, Deputy Premier and Treasurer, Minister for Local Government the Hon Stirling Hinchliffe as well as the Leader of the Opposition Ms Deb Frecklington and Mr Tim Mander, Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Treasurer. The group will also be meeting with local parliamentary representatives. “I must thank all the Min-
isters, Shadow Ministers and staff for making the time to meet with our delegation and listen to our regional voice regarding the priorities impacting the economic development of FNQ. “I look forward to continuing to work with both sides of Government to progress regional priorities and resolve any identified issues,” Cr Gilmore concluded.

$10M investment to ensure Lakeland irrigation project is shovel ready
OPEN: At the official opening on Tuesday of the new James Creek crossing in Dimbulah was (back) Peter Franks (MSC CEO), Cr Nipper Brown, Cr Kevin Davies, Dean Patchett (QRA Liaison Officer), Sam Wakeford (MSC Manager Technical Services), Mark Bird (Owner HEH), Bruce Burton (Project Manager HEH). Front; Cr Lenore Wyatt, Glenda Kirk (MSC Director Infrastructure Services), Cr Angela Toppin, Cr Mary Graham, Paul Steele (Trinity Engineering) and Mayor Tom Gilmore.
James Creek crossing open CONSTRUCTION of the new James Creek Crossing on Wolfram Road Dimbulah is now complete. The crossing suffered significant damage from flooding in March 2018 and as a result Council applied for disaster assistance to replace the infrastructure. Eligible works on James
Creek Crossing are jointly funded by the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA). MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said while a dozen residents were temporarily cut off, Council maintained access while the necessary approvals needed to
replace the crossing were obtained. “Council worked around the clock, particularly when the crossing was first washed away to ensure residents were not left stranded by constructing a temporary crossing,” Cr Gilmore said. “Without the assistance from the Commonwealth and the
Queensland Government, Council would simply have not been able to replace the crossing. “This has demonstrated how all three levels of Government can effectively work together and I thank the Commonwealth and the Queensland Governments, contractors and staff for a successful outcome.”
THE Morrison Government will invest up to $10 million to ensure the Lakeland Irrigation Area Project is shovel ready. This investment will ensure the final engineering and scoping works on this regiondefining project are completed. Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said the Coalition Government want to build dams. He said the Coalition Government’s investment for this project will be delivered through the feasibility component of the National Water Infrastructure Fund. “We know that unlocking the potential of our regional communities goes hand-inhand with water security,” Mr McCormack said. “That is why we are investing up to $10 million to further progress the business case for the Lakeland Irrigation Area Project to unlock the region’s agricultural and economic potential. “Every day this government is getting on with the job of building water infrastructure for the 21st Century that will deliver great water security for rural communities, grow jobs, underpin new and expanded agriculture and support regional economic growth and prosperity across Australia.” Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said ensuring the Lakeland Irrigation Area project would be a game changer for Far North
Queensland. He said the Coalition Government had also committed to funding the project once the engineering and scoping works had been completed. “I am proud the Coalition Government is putting money on the table to unlock the potential of this project,” Mr Entsch said. “This project has the potential to unlock 8,000 hectares of irrigated land and could create more than 1000 jobs during construction of the project not to mention the many local jobs that would be created with the expansion of the region’s economy.” Federal Northern Australia Minister Matt Canavan the Coalition Government was determined to unlock the economic potential of Far North Queensland. “We are not afraid to build dams – in fact we want to build more of them because we know the potential of our communities, particularly in North Queensland, and the importance of these projects to grow regional Australia,” Mr Canavan said. “The Lakeland Irrigation Area is huge potential to increase its agricultural output, but we need to ensure there is a secure water supply – and in this region there are huge opportunities to do so.” The Coalition Government is investing more than $3 billion to identify and build new water infrastructure across Australia.

Mareeba midwives celebrate It was a double celebration for Mareeba Hospital midwives last Thursday as they came together to celebrate International Midwives Day and the ten year anniversary of the Midwifery Group Practice.
WHY WPHS SHOULD NOT BE A YAWN TOPIC
MAREEBA Hospital midwives and community members gathered at the Priceline Pharmacy on Byrnes Street last Thursday to celebrate International Midwives Day along with 10 years of the Mareeba Hospital’s Midwifery Group Practice (MGP). International Midwives Day officially took place on May 5 while this Sunday marks the ten year anniversary since the inception of the esteemed Mareeba Hospital’s MGP. The Midwifery Group Practice has established itself as one of the most effective forms of care, and Mareeba Hospital’s registered caseload midwife Renae Lambert referred to it as the “gold standard of midwifery care”. “MGP means women can get a known midwife to look after
them throughout their pregnancy and birth, and by the end of it they’re birthing with someone they know and trust,” she said. “It creates better outcomes for both the mothers and their babies – maternal satisfaction is really important during pregnancy and birth and MGP enables that. “We’ve been fortunate enough to have cared for thousands of women so far who’ve used this service and we know from the feedback we get that this is what women want.” Fellow Mareeba Hospital midwife Sally Wallace also spoke glowingly about the benefits the MGP has provided since it began ten years ago, noting that mothers travel far and wide throughout the region to receive this specific form of care. “We have women travelling from Mossman, Goldsborough, the Daintree and also some from places as far as Mount Isa and the Cape,” she said. “We also had one woman who birthed her first baby in Mareeba and made the decision to come back for her second and third baby despite having moved to a property in Perth.” Ms Wallace said she believes the MGP is so popular with mothers as the continuity of care with the same midwife means they don’t have to tell their story over and over again. “It’s such a fantastic program as mothers are comfortable for their entire pregnancy,” she said. “Also, from my perspective, it’s really enjoyable as a midwife to get to know the women personally and follow them on their journey.” Mareeba’s Midwifery Group
Practice was the pioneer of this particular form of midwifery care, and its success has acted as a source of inspiration for a number of other hospitals throughout Australia. “It was something that the community wanted and with the combination of support from the community and the midwives, they were able to get this service happening against all odds as it was the first of its kind,” Mareeba Hospital’s caseload midwife Narelle Crane said. “Our model of care has been written up in many research articles about how this is the gold standard, and many models try to emulate what we’ve done here in Mareeba. “And that is something we are proud of.” Administrator of the Maternity Unit at Mareeba Hospital Kayla Taylor seconded Ms Crane’s comments, alluding to the impact this town’s midwifery program has had on the health industry across the country. “It’s amazing to see little old Mareeba becoming well-known in the bigger cities for a service like the Midwifery Group Practice,” she said. “It’s clearly a program that works and its success couldn’t have happened without the wonderful support from the community and the midwives who have contributed immensely to what has become such an essential service for the region.” The prosperity of the Mareeba Hospital’s Midwifery Group Practice is further evidence of the wonderful achievements by the people of Mareeba and the Tablelands.

ATHERTON FRIENDS OF THE HOSPITAL: Atherton Rotary director Jo Barnes with nurse unit manager of community health at the Atherton Hospital Kelly Pollock.
Executive committee to be appointed for Friends of the Atherton Hospital THE Atherton community will gather today to appoint an executive committee to its new local Friends of the Atherton Hospital. A subsidiary group of the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation, the Atherton Friends group is a combination of the local hospital auxiliary group, with the broader local community. The meeting will be held at the International Club at 5.30pm with
light finger food to be served. Rotary Club of Atherton Director Jo Barnes said people should come along if they are interested in helping support the local hospital. “A maximum of five locals will be chosen to represent the newfound group,” she said. “And the Atherton Rotary club has pledged $20,000 in support once the Friends of the
Atherton Hospital Group is up and running.” Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Atherton, the meeting is open to anyone in the local community who wishes to support the Atherton Hospital. Contact Ms Barnes on 0448 7503 53 for further information. For further information, to donate or volunteer for the Foundation visit www.fnqhf.org.au
Mareeba Hospital theatre upgrade to start soon MAREEBA Hospital will start the upgrade of their operating theatre as early as July and reopen with a new endoscopy service for residents. During the upgrade, the Mareeba operating theatre will only be available for obstetric and maternity emergency surgery. Dr Nikki Patching, Mareeba Hospital Medical Superintendent said the new endoscopy service will allow the Hospital to test residents for gastrointestinal tract diseases such as cancers and tumours. “By providing endoscopic services locally we will be able to treat more patients within clinically recommended timeframes and meet increasing future demand for endoscopic services,” said Dr Patching.
“An endoscopy allows doctors to see the lining of a patient’s oesophagus, stomach, or colon. If abnormal areas are seen, biopsies (tissue samples) can be taken for testing” Dr Patching explained. Mareeba Director of Nursing and Midwifery/Facility Manager Vickye Coffey said that 30 per cent of referrals for endoscopies to Atherton Hospital were for patients who lived closer to Mareeba Hospital. “This new service means we can provide safe and sustainable care closer to home for Mareeba residents,” said Ms Coffey. “We anticipate that surgery will be closed for about 12 weeks from July,” said Ms Coffey. “Once we know exact dates we will let residents know.”
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
Non-essential surgery will be referred to Atherton Hospital or Cairns Hospital or postponed. “We will continue to provide urgent surgery such as emergency caesarean sections,” said Ms Coffey. Patients who are booked in for surgery from July will be contacted by the Mareeba Hospital to discuss alternative arrangements. Pregnant mothers will be able to discuss their options with their Mareeba Hospital midwives. Cairns and Hinterland Health Service Chief Executive Clare Douglas said that the new endoscopy service aligns with the Health Service strategy to increase the self-sufficiency of major rural sites, such as Mareeba Hospital.

EXPRESSyourself LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
The Express reserves the right to edit letters
Is the reef really dying? sources, including volcanism lineage. Is our most precious and much-loved marine eco-system, the Great Barrier Reef, really dying? There’s plenty of room to doubt it, so let’s imagine a trial. The Crime: Coal is allegedly causing climate change to warm the Reef waters and kill coral. The Victim: 400 million year old coral species, living at their current address for 7,000 years. The Accused: Ancient forests, buried and transformed by heat and pressure into solid sunshine. The Prosecution: Humans who rely on coral mortality to access public money for their income. The Defence:- Individual taxpayers who don’t rely on coral mortality for their income. The Witnesses: Thousands of Reef visitors every day of every year and Professor Peter Ridd. The Evidence:- This is minimal and contestable; the victim shows no sign of death or serious illness. The Trial: For the Prosecution’s case to stand, it must prove that carbon dioxide (CO2) specifically from burning coal can warm air which heats Reef waters and that coral can’t adapt to that change. CO2: Of the total CO2 flux, 96 per cent is from natural
and oceanic outgassing, and 4 per cent is of human origin. Of that 4 per cent, less than a third comes from burning coal. Coal burning is not causing any measurable harm. Warmer air: Despite forty years study, costing the world billions of dollars, there is still no causal factor linking CO2 to baseline temperatures. It doesn’t even qualify as a proper scientific theory because its hypothesis is untestable. It’s a “belief” only; popular “consensus” notwithstanding. Air heating water:- Warmer air has minimal heating effect on water. It’s an energy/mass thing. The atmosphere is less than 1 per cent of the mass of the oceans. Sunlight can heat masses of water; air cannot. Warmer water commonly upwells from beneath cooler water, many years after the sun warmed it, due to salinity differences. Warmer, moresaline water is denser, and heavier, than colder, fresher water. Coral adaptation: Coral bleaches to replace its symbiotes; it adapts to changes in its local climate by ejecting the old and admitting the new. In the vast majority of cases it does this successfully. When it doesn’t its skeletons build the Reef and islands. It’s an evolutionary superpower. No other species can adapt so quickly to higher and lower temperatures and CO2 levels. This is proven by its ancient
The star witness: Professor Ridd was dismissed by JCU for questioning the quality of Reef research. He then resoundingly beat JCU in Court over his dismissal. He is our best and most honest Reef expert and he does not find a coal-CO2-coral link. The Verdict: In the absence of a victim or any solid evidence of a crime, coal is found to be innocent of any role in killing the Reef. Peter Campion TOLGA
Your vote counts
I read in a Cairns newspaper that the Labor Party candidate Elida Faith is offering another splash pool for Cape York communities. Once upon a time Cape York people swam in the sea and rivers. I can understand the Labor thinking here, because the Cape and its rivers are so overpopulated with crocodiles nobody is game to go near any water. Why has this happened? Because the Labor and Liberal parties have ignored the people of Cape York and prevented them from managing crocodiles and making a local industry from crocodile products. I hope these long-suffering people remember these patronising governments when they vote in two weeks time. Keith Courte MAREEBA
Joshua Richardson (TGT Dimbulah), Tony Fitzgerald (Bayer Crop Science), James Wells (Extreme Motorcycles), Wim Van Niekerk (winner), Ali Zenel and Allan Sutton (TGT Dimbulah).
Dimbulah farmer wins Australia wide comp
TGT Dimbulah recently celebrated their second winner in the Bayer Year of the Grower promotion. After customer Ante Milicevic took home a brand new $16,500 Polaris Ranger UTV in Draw one, now Wim Van Niekerk of Widem Farming has also welcomed a new Polaris to his farm after the second draw. “What are the chances, with thousands of entries received from hundreds of different stores all across Australia, TGT got to make two of their customers very happy – looks like lighting does sometimes strike twice,” Bayer Commercial Sales Representative, Tony Fitzgerald said.
Upon receiving the Polaris, Wim van Niekerk, said it was totally unexpected to win the prize, but an absolute thrill. “Personally, I thought The Year of the Grower was a brilliant campaign, giving some great prizes back to the farming community when we’re all doing it tough,” he said. Celebrating with Wim was Allan Sutton, from TGT Dimbulah, which, as the store where the winning product was purchased, also received a $1,000 EFTPOS Gift Card from Bayer. “Wim is a terrific winner, although new to the area he’s become a loyal customer of TGT Dimbulah, helping support us
at the local Hardware and Crop Protection Agency,” Mr Sutton said. “He farms one of the bigger local farms with some 10,000 lemon and 10,000 lime trees, so the new Polaris will certainly be put to use”. “Ironically, not only did lighting strike in Dimbulah, but in the same street, with Wim only living a few hundred metres up the road from Ante,” Allan added. Wim doesn’t see the Polaris standing around idle either. “With 3 1/2 kilometres to the back paddock and 10,000 extra lemon trees to go into the ground soon, the Polaris is sure to be constantly on the go,” he said.

FROZEN KEY LIME PIES
Enter digits from 1 to 9 into the blank spaces. Every row must contain one of each digit. So must every column, as must every 3x3 square.
Ingredients ¾ cup key lime juice 1 can condensed milk 225g whipped cream
April 21 to May 21
You may find your self a bit frazzled if you allow someone to goad you into an unsavory debate. Stress coupled with diet will add to stomach problems. Tempers will mount if you are too pushy at work.
225g cream cheese, softened 125g butter, unsalted, melted 250g milk arrowroot biscuts
Method 1. Crush milk arrowroot biscuts and mix with the melted butter, set aside. 2. Cream the cream cheese until smooth using a hand mixer, add in the sweetened condensed milk and mix until smooth. Add the key lime juice and mix until smooth then add the whipped thickened cream to the cream cheese mixture, folding it in until combined. 4. Taking individual silicone cups or silicone muffin tin fill with the cream cheese mixture about ¾ of the way up. Top with the biscuit crumbs. 5. Place on platter or sheet tray and place in freezer for 4 hours or until set. 6. Unmold pies carefully and serve graham cracker side down. The easiest way to do this is to submerge the bottom half of the mold into warm water for a few seconds. 7. Serve with whipped cream to garnish and add key lime slice if desired, enjoy!

EXPRESS SPORT PORT Greater push for women to take up martial arts
Successful day for Mareeba soccer
Deane Alterio, Milan Quintieri, Jack Centofanti and Damien Avolio have been selected for the U16 Peninsula School Sport team.
13 LOCAL soccer players have been selected to represent Peninsula School Sport after Pennell Park in Cairns played host to trials last Monday. Mareeba Bulls players Jack Centofanti, Deane Alterio, Mi-
lan Quintieri and Damien Avolio have been selected for the boy’s U16 squad, and were accompanied by three shadows Logan Acha, Josh Leporati and Jon Gambino. The girls were not overlooked
with Jenna Soncin, Tonia-maree Rantucci and Teesha Potts being selected for the girl’s U15 squad. In addition, Madina Williamson, Alyssa McCarthy and Hannah Steele were selected as shadows.
Walking Hockey comes to Atherton
Women of all ages are encouraged take up martial arts to learn the importance of self-defence in everyday life.
RHEE Tae Kwon Do continues its rise in popularity on the Tablelands and Regional Master Instructor Sixth Degree and Chief Examiner Gennaro Arena is hoping to further improve on participation numbers as he looks to encourage more women to take up the martial art. Arena said he will be making a big push in 2019 to teach women the importance of selfdefence in everyday life. “I’m of the belief that it is very important for a young girl or woman to learn a martial art,” he said. “So my main objective is to show them how easy it is to defend yourself – and the great thing about Rhee Tae Kwon Do is that you learn a really useful
life skill while also getting fit. “My second objective is to also build their confidence, the root cause of failure is a lack of confidence and that is something a martial art provides.” Arena noted that he plans to host an all-female introductory class on a weekday sometime soon to help interested girls and women gain more of an understanding of Rhee Tae Kwon Do before they are required to join the mixed regular classes on Monday and Thursday nights. “This will be so beneficial for women and will be something they can use if ever required,” he said. “Rhee Tae Kwon Do isn’t just about punching and kicking, self-defence is another key
component of the discipline and I want to put more of a focus on it moving forward.” While Arena is hopeful of greater female numbers participating in the future, he stressed that he would also like to see greater men and children numbers too. “At the end of the day we incorporate everything and everyone at Rhee Tae Kwon Do,” he said. “And that is about promoting fun, fitness and self-defence for all members.” For those interested in taking up Rhee Tae Kwon Do, the classes are held at the Mareeba PCYC on Monday and Thursday nights from 6:30pm to 7:30pm.
ATHERTON Hockey Association is excited to bring this innovative new sport to the Tablelands. Atherton will be one of less than five places in the state to offer this to people of all ages, health or disability as a social fun exercise. Don't know what walking hockey is? Well, if you can walk but not run, if you dream of when you played sport but your body can no longer take the impact, if you're told you need to exercise but you just can't stay motivated, if you want to socialise and have fun outdoors but not sure how –
then walking hockey is the answer. It's Hockey, but walking. Walking hockey is played on a small field (being only 23m x 27.5m) which means it is about a third of a regular field. Teams are usually between 4-6 people and can be mixed gender. Rules include, all players are restricted to walking i.e. one foot on the ground at all times, the ball must stay below knee height, the stick must remain below waist height, the ball can only be pushed – no hitting, no physical contact, and games go for a total of 24 minutes.
Come and try at Loder Park on Saturday June 1, at 4.30pm and sign up at reduced fees for the season if you fall in love with the game as we do. You do not need to know how to play walking hockey – they we will teach you all the rules while you have fun. If you are a past hockey player but now have an injury, or are simply older, or just lost touch then come back to the game. We need your help in supporting new players to this exciting game.

LINDSAY Australia Stadium will play host to the Mareeba Bulls’ fifth home game of the season this Saturday night as they take on third-placed outfit Leichhardt. This fixture could prove crucial in the context of the Premiers Bulls’ season as despite their generous number of home games they’ve had to start the year, they haven’t been able to capitalise on that advantage and
find themselves towards the bottom of the competition ladder. While they have unfortunately been hampered with injuries to key players, their performances have also been plagued with continual lapses defensively to coincide with a lack of composure in front of goal. Leichhardt’s season thus far consists of more mixed results, with draws against Edge Hill United and cellar dwellers In-
nisfail. They do however have a very impressive win on their 2019 resume with a 5-2 victory over league-leaders the Stratford Dolphins. For those interested in attending, the Premiers fixtures kicks off at 7pm. Saturday’s fixtures: Youth – 1pm, Ladies – 3pm, Reserve Grade – 5pm and Premiers – 7pm.

EXPRESS SPORT PORT Roosters back at home against Suburbs
Gladiators look to bounce back THE Mareeba Gladiators will be looking to come back reinvigorated after having the weekend off as they take on the Yarrabah Seahawks at Davies Park this Saturday night. The Gladiators will be hoping to put forth a better performance than their last outing against the Mossman Sharks, where their 18-6 half-time lead was quickly decimated by their opposition and a 50-18 blow-out loss ensued. Both teams are desperate for a win as they are 1-3 to start the season and find them-
THE Atherton Roosters have the chance to bounce back from their first loss of the season against table-toppers Cairns Brothers last weekend as they host Southern Suburbs this Saturday night. The Roosters put up a valiant performance in muddy conditions away from home in their loss, and they’ll be hoping to get back into the winners column to ensure they stay within reach of first place on the ladder. Their opponents Suburbs have had a mixed start to the season, having lost to Cairns Brothers and the Mareeba Gladiators to go along with a win against the Yarrabah Seahawks and a draw last weekend with the previously undefeated Ivanhoes. Atherton Roosters five-eighth and captain Jermaine Pedro
spoke about what needs to be worked on in the lead-up to their match against Suburbs. “Overall our effort was there against Brothers,” he said. “However we didn’t execute well enough in attack and we had too many defensive lapses throughout the game. “We hung in for the majority of the game, however a couple of further defensive mistakes ten minutes after half-time hurt us and they ran away with it a little bit.” Pedro said his side’s defence is the area which will be of particular importance at this week’s training. “Our defensive mistakes are something we will be looking to rectify from our last performance – it is something we pride
ourselves on and it was disappointing to leak 20 plus points against Brothers,” he said. While the Roosters are coming off a high-stakes top of the table clash, Pedro said it is paramount to not become complacent against a seventh-placed Southern Suburbs outfit. “Suburbs are always a tough and gritty side no matter where they’re sitting on the ladder, so we’ll train hard and prepare for them as best we can and we certainly won’t be taking them lightly,” he said.
selves languishing towards the bottom of the ladder. It is a particularly important outing for Mareeba as this weekend’s game is the last home fixture for three weeks – with two of their upcoming away games against thirdplaced Kangaroos and leagueleaders Cairns Brothers. In Reserve Grade, coach Cameron McPherson and his side are currently sitting atop the table, and while their opponents Yarrabah are sitting in eighth spot, they are always an unpredictable side who can
score from anywhere on the park. Despite a closer than expected second half against Mossman in their last performance, McPherson will take some solace out of his side’s ability to hold on late in games, with their three wins for the season being a two, six and four point win respectively. This Saturday’s fixtures: Gates Open – 1pm, Ladies – 2pm, U18s – 3pm, Reserve Grade – 4:30pm, A-Grade – 6pm.
