Nate’s third surgery a success MAREEBA’S Nate Moule is recovering after undergoing his third brain surgery yesterday. For those who don’t know Nate and his story, he is a twoyear-old local boy who has fought admirably in the face of a debilitating malignant brain tumour that was diagnosed on October 31 of last year. When Nate was first diagnosed, he underwent immediate surgery in Brisbane which removed 95% of his tumour via a radical resection. Nate had a further surgery on January 9 in Sydney with world-renowned neurosurgeon Dr Charlie Teo, which saw him tumour-free for the better part of four months. However a scan in Cairns on May 8 identified a small reoccurrence in the same tumour bed. Fortunately the remainder of the brain and spine showed no indication of spreading of the tumour. “We flew down to Sydney on Sunday, May 12 and Dr Charlie Teo operated on Nate yesterday,” Nate’s mother Katie said. “This operation consisted

of a bigger resection and Dr Teo had to take more healthy tissue this time.” Ms Moule said the surgery was a resounding success and that Nate is currently in great spirits. “He didn’t go into the ICU this time and was out of hospital within 24 hours,” she said. “He is now running around and having a great time – as Dr Teo told me, there’s no stopping him.” Nate and his family flew back to far north Queensland on Monday, and Ms Moule noted that there isn’t a followup plan in place for Nate at this stage. “Nate will be resting for the next three weeks and then we’ll find out more from there,” she said. “I just wanted to take this opportunity to update the community on Nate’s condition as well as thank them for all of their support.” PICTURED: An inspirational photo of Mareeba’s Nate Moule with worldrenowned neurosurgeon Dr Charlie Teo.

Nudgee students take out 2019 Wheelbarrow Race AFTER three days and 140kms it was St Joseph’s Nudgee College from Brisbane who took out the 2019 Great Wheelbarrow Race. The three day iconic event has been hailed a success once again with 46 teams running with a wheelbarrow from Mareeba to Chillagoe raising more than $140,000 for charity. “Numbers were up this year and race morale was high,” said Great Wheelbarrow Race chair Cr Nipper Brown. “It was another great weekend and everything went really well,” he said. “The camaraderie, the courtesy they showed to each other and the support they gave to one another along the race was unbelievable as always. “I am also just amazed how the teams keep getting quicker each year with three new records set. “And again we have managed to raise significant amounts for charity.” he said. In their fifth year running, St Joseph’s Nudgee College were named the overall winners for the first time, while also winning the School category in a new record time of six hours and 51 minutes. Hundreds of people turned out on Friday morning to watch the teams parade down Byrnes Street and then again to cross the

finish line in Chillagoe, which chairman of the Wheelbarrow Race committee and councillor Nipper Brown said was fantastic to see. “The support from the public was unbelievable again and the small town reception along the way was great as always.” Cr Brown said the event was so successful thanks to the people behind it. “If we didn’t have the volunteers as well as the committee it wouldn’t run,” he said. “Also without the sponsors this event would not be possible. “I’d like to thank the committee and the volunteers and all the competitors because without them coming back year in year out it wouldn’t happen.” In other race results, the mixed category was won by Easier said than run, Ladies was won by The Wish Makers, Men’s by the Foot Falcons teams, while the SES Psycho Ducks took out the Corporate category. The over 55’s was again won by Dad’s Army and the 72ers won the over 35’s category. The solo’s were won by Isaac Winspear and Jeralyn Pickering, while Liam Pozzebon and Jake Priestly took out the Duo category and the local Hohns brothers won the new Trio category.

Mareeba will be home to a new accommodation provider as construction of the Cape Gateway Motel is officially underway. INSET: The motel plan.

Mareeba motel looks to boost tourism MAREEBA could be set for a substantial boost in tourism as construction is officially underway on the Cape Gateway Motel at 3-5 Williams Close off the Peninsula Development Road. The project will be built over two stages, with stage one scheduled to be complete within 12 months. The Cape Gateway Motel will consist of 57 rooms along with a licenced café, a shop, pool and toilet and shower facilities. Owner and developer Greg Williams said the concept of hav-

ing an accommodation and tourist park in Mareeba has been on his mind ever since he bought the land. “I sub-divided the block 20 years ago purposefully to build this facility,” he said. “With Mareeba now expanding at such a rate, I felt now was the right time for more accommodation and tourist facilities in the town. “We’ve spent 18 months in the design and development stage which required us to get the necessary approvals from council.

“We had a few objections which we changed and modified to ensure we suited what people wanted, and while that held us up a bit, we have put that behind us and we now have approval to proceed and construct.” In addition to the forevergrowing Mareeba Township, Mr Williams alluded to the project’s location as another key reason that he’s confident the Cape Gateway Motel will establish itself as a sought-after accommodation provider in the region. “You have the industrial es-

tate across the road and the cattle sale yards nearby, so from a location perspective I think I’ve got the right position for this type of venture,” he said. Mr Williams, who has an extensive background in civil contracting, noted his excitement about the project and the enormous motivation it has instilled in him personally. “I’m 72 years of age and it has me feeling like I’m 25 again,” he laughed. “My business partner and I built hundreds of lots and sub-di-

visions at my previous company, so while I have done something similar to this many times before, this is the first time I’ve done it in accommodation and hospitality specifically so that is extremely exciting.” To add to Mr Williams’ excitement were the favourable findings in the complete economic study. “We’ve done a complete business case and gotten an idea on all the figures such as how many cars pass the site, the expected growth in this region and the average tourist’s spend in North Queensland,” he said. “So with the complete economic study having now been done, I’m convinced with its results that this is a viable project.” While the Cape Gateway Motel shows enormous promise from a tourism perspective, it will also play an integral role in creating jobs. “I really want to emphasise that there are currently nine men who are working on the site,” Mr Williams said. “In addition, there will be 9-30 people working on the site for the next 12 months, and 8-12 permanent jobs available once the motel is open. “All the people working on this project are from Cairns, Mareeba or the Tablelands, so I’m making sure we use local people and encourage local investment.” Mr Williams took time to thank those who have contrib-

uted in getting this project off the ground. “I want to recognise all the town planners along with the electrical, sewerage and plumbing contractors – they are all onboard and doing a phenomenal job,” he said. “I also would like to especially thank the project’s design engineer Jim Papas and Gordon Paterson and his crew from Highland Earthmoving, they too are doing tremendously well.” Mr Williams saved his greatest expression of gratitude to his family however, noting their unwavering assistance in what is such a large project. “My family’s support throughout has been unbelievable and I couldn’t be doing this without them,” he said. “That includes my children and grandchildren, my daughter of which is looking after the financial and overall management of the project.” KEY POINTS ABOUT THE CAPE GATEWAY MOTEL • Stage one to be completed by March or April, 2020. • 31 rooms to be built in stage one, of which will include one two-bedroom family unit and sixteen selfcontained rooms with ensuites. • Stage two will take roughly 12 months once construction is commenced.

Katter re-elected in Kennedy as Coalition soars to victory

KAP’s Bob Katter was all smiles as he cruised to a comfortable victory in the Federal Election on Saturday night and retained his seat as the Federal Member for Kennedy.

KATTER Australia Party’s Bob Katter was re-elected as the Federal Member for Kennedy on Saturday night as millions of Australians tuned in to watch the Federal Election. Mr Katter secured 41 per cent of the vote, while Liberal National Party candidate Frank Beveridge and Australian Labor Party candidate Brett McGuire received 27.3 and 17.2 per cent of the vote respectively. The opposition candidates and their calls for change didn’t resonate enough with the residents of Kennedy, as Mr Katter saw a swing of +2.6 per cent of his total vote tally compared to that of 2016. Mr Katter expressed his thanks to all the voters and his supporters who handed out How to Vote cards on Election Day. All the people who stood out in the hot sun and also in the drizzling rain working hard for

what they believe in; it is always a very humbling experience and I never, ever expect to win,” he said. “I am very appreciative of the people that give me another opportunity because I love the fight.” While Mr Katter’s win in the Kennedy electorate didn’t come as much of a surprise, the battle for the prime ministership between Scott Morrison and Bill Shorten provided one of the biggest upsets in Australia’s political history. In his Election night address, Mr Morrison described his victory as a “miracle”. “I have always believed in miracles…and tonight we’ve delivered another one,” he said. “Tonight is not about me or

The polls got it wrong

Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch has been re-elected (pictured with his wife Yolonde on Saturday). It was a fantastic night for the Liberal National Party as they won what some called an “unwinnable election”.

WHILE it was always expected that incumbent MP Warren Entsch would retain his Leichhardt seat, few expected the Liberal National Coalition to win. Despite all public opinion surveys and the exit polls predicting a Labor win, it was the opposite result in Australia’s federal election on Saturday. After the surprise victory PM Scott Morrison said “How good is Australia and how good are Australians.” “This is the best country in the world in which to live.” In Leichhardt, Liberal National Party's Warren Entsch will now enter his eighth term in parliament after he acquired 37.3 per cent of the vote compared to Labor candidate Elida Faith’s 29.4 per cent. It was in Queensland where the Labor Party suffered a swing of more than 4% against it. The LNP landslide victory in Queensland delivered two extra seats, with Labor expected to hold only five of the state’s 30 electorates. With the election now over, it’s time to get on with the job.

even the Liberal party, tonight is about every single Australian who depends on their government to put them first. “And so friends, that is exactly what we are going to do, our government will come together after this night and we will get back to work. “And that is our task, and that is my undertaking to Australians from one end of the country to the other - I said that I was going to burn for you, and I am every single day.” In what was quite a divisive national campaign across the board, many Australians will be intrigued to see how great of an impact Saturday’s result will have on the country’s political landscape moving into the future.

CORRECTIONAL officers from the Lotus Glen Correctional Centre went on strike last Monday and again over the weekend in a bid to secure improved working conditions and better pay. Saturday’s participation in industrial action marked the third time this month that employees have voiced their displeasure by forgoing labour. Together Union delegate Jason Rees said they have been in negotiations with the department for quite some time, yet they are unwilling to participate at all in meeting their demands. “We want to bring attention to our plight,” he said. “We are experiencing increases in violence and our

workload is definitely on the up, and I think with our industrial action, the department is starting to realise how hard our job is. “When they put contingencies in place to cover our labour strikes, it becomes chaotic. “It’s also helping that we’re getting the word out through the media, which hopefully will encourage them to come to the table.” Last Monday’s industrial action saw members help out at the Mareeba Men’s Shed, something Mr Rees said was very worthwhile. “We thought it would be good to do something productive rather than just standing on the side of the road with signs,” he said.

“We felt it would be good to combine our industrial action with the Mareeba Men’s Shed as we have a shared interest. “The Men’s Shed does a lot of great work with mental health and suicide awareness among men, which are issues that also plague the prison community.” The Lotus Glen Correctional Centre’s strikes are part of statewide industrial action that has taken place over the past three weeks. It appears this issue isn’t going to go away any time soon as Queensland Corrective Services has taken the Together Union to the Queensland Industrial Relations Court five times to stop officers walking out of jail to strike in the past two weeks.

Increase in waste fees and charges IN the lead up to the 2019-20 budget, Council adopted the scheduled waste fees and charges. While the increase to Council’s fees and charges are minimal to meet cost recovery, the Queensland Government is introducing a waste levy which Council is obliged to collect and hand over to the State. An advanced payment from the State Government will subsidise kerbside wheelie bin col-

lection and self-hauled domestic waste taken to the transfer station. Domestic waste excludes bulky items, recycling waste, Ewaste, regulated waste and scrap metal. Deputy Mayor Councillor Alan Pedersen said if you are renovating at home and want to dispose of concrete and building waste, you will be charged the additional State levy of $7.50 per 100kgs at the gate, which is

a mandatory fee payable to the State Government. “The State is imposing this levy in a bid to reduce waste going to landfill and encourage recycling,” Cr Pedersen said. “Council reminds residents that illegal dumping against the law and there are penalties in place for those found to be doing the wrong thing.” The increase will take effect on July 1 this year.

School students try their hand at law SCHOOLS from around the tablelands competed against each other in a mock court trial held at the Mareeba Court House last Tuesday. Teams from Malanda State High School, St Stephens and Mareeba State High School were all tasked with arguing an unseen case that was presided over by magistrate Terry Browne. The mock trial’s organiser Peter Apel credited this program to giving a number of students a chance to experience law first hand. “This program encourages school kids to learn the legal system,” he said. “I’m always impressed by their knowledge and enthusiasm when it comes to learning and

THE Kuranda Community Task Force spearheaded an operation into the prevention of the Yellow Crazy Ants present within the Kuranda region last Saturday. The Kuranda Community Task Force (KCTF) is comprised of concerned community members who have volunteered to protect their environment and way of life in a more direct and

practical way. The KCTF in conjunction with Kuranda Envirocare have partnered with the Wet Tropics Management Authority, and in doing so are supporting the Yellow Crazy Ant Eradication Program by assisting with monitoring and baiting related activities. The Yellow Crazy Ant Eradication Program was deployed in

order to combat the severity and dangerous nature of the invasive ant species as they have been known to attack large predators such as dogs. Saturday’s workshop saw the task force set out sticky ant traps at the Kuranda Envirocare Nursery in an attempt to rid Russett Park of the remaining ants that have nested there.

2019 DIMBULAH LIONS FESTIVAL Celebrating Community Spirit

Dimbulah’s ‘festival of the year’ Dimbulah is set to come alive with food, entertainment and the best of festival fun this Saturday, May 25. An exciting line up of entertainment has been organised, which will culminate with the crowning of the ‘Festival Queen’ at the end of the night, followed by an amazing display of fireworks. It’s all on this Saturday from 5pm with the downtown street parade. Head out to Dimbulah and don’t miss this once a year event! IN my first year as President of the Dimbulah Lions Club, it is with great pleasure that I present to you the 2019 Dimbulah Lions Festival. Every year without fail our club of hard working, community minded volunteers pull together and take on the massive task of organising the festival. I am always impressed by the hard work and dedication of our Lions and their partners many of whom are extremely busy in their own working lives but are still willing and able to dedicate a sizeable portion of what is left of their spare time to the club to ensure that this community festival goes ahead and runs as smoothly as possible. This year our theme is “Community Spirit” and we are encouraging people to come along to the festival in

a show of support of one another and to engage in meaningful social interaction in a fun, safe family environment. It saddens me to see that in recent times local businesses have been forced to close. I think that most would agree that the flow on effect has been felt in most households in Dimbulah. The importance of community spirit cannot be understated. More than ever before we need to come together collectively as a community and throw our support behind local businesses, health facilities, emergency services, schools, sporting and service clubs to ensure that Dimbulah and surrounding communities are not “just surviving” but “thriving”. Through the Lions Club International motto of “We Serve” the Dimbulah Lions

On behalf of the club, I would like to sincerely thank all our major sponsors for your continued support in ensuring the sustainability of our festival. Saturday 25th May promises to be an entertaining evening. I encourage you all to show your ‘community spirit’ and come out to the festival for what promises to be an entertaining evening for the young and old starting with the street parade, a program packed full of entertainment for all ages, a wide variety of food and drink, and concluding with the crowning of the Queen and an awesome fireworks display. Please don’t miss Dimbulah’s grand event of the year.

Club continues to serve the community in whatever capacity we can. Throughout the course of the year we give back significant amounts of monetary donations into the community; the funds of which are generated mostly from the proceeds of the festival. The Dimbulah Lions Club provides the platform for other clubs and organisations to raise money for themselves to ensure they continue to operate. Helping the local community however, is just the tip of the iceberg. Lions Clubs throughout Australia are working hard every day to ensure that funding for various projects can be continued such as conducting medical research, providing disaster recovery and relief, protecting the environment, supporting young leaders, helping farmers in need and welcoming refugees. Of course in addition to our volunteer member base our festival would not go ahead at all if it were not for the generosity of our major sponsors. Our major sponsors for this year are Gold Sponsors – Bendigo Bank and DBC

Nethery to light up Dimbulah Festival

See Amber Lawrence live in Malanda LOCAL musician Becci Nethery will be back in the region this weekend as she is performing at the Dimbulah Lions Festival. Ms Nethery noted her excitement about getting the opportunity to play once again at the annual event. “I’ve performed at the Dimbulah Lions Festival a number of times and I always have so much fun,” she said. “I think performing there is made even more special as I know so many people, and I can’t wait to play for them some of the favourites off the album.”

Saturday night will be of added importance for Nethery as she will be officially releasing her new single ‘In The Middle Of This’ at the festival. “I’m really looking forward for those in attendance to hear my single,” she said. “In addition, I’ve been working on my new album so there’s plenty happening for me.” Ms Nethery is beginning to carve out quite an impressive young career, and that is evidenced by her recently being named a finalist in the 2020 Independent Country Music Awards (IMCAs).

“I am so proud to be recognised and it’s something I definitely didn’t see coming,” she said. “I love the fact that I’m a finalist for an independent award, it’s refreshing to see an awards night that recognises the hard work and dedication independent artists put in rather than just those who are signed.” For those interested in watching Becci Nethery perform this weekend, her performance will start at 7:50pm. Entry to the Dimbulah Lions Festival is free of charge.

COUNTRY music enthusiasts on the Tablelands will be treated to a jam-packed night of entertainment as critically acclaimed artist Amber Lawrence performs at the Malanda RSL this Friday. This will be the fourth time Lawrence has played at the Malanda RSL, and she noted her excitement about having the opportunity to play there again. “It’s such a beautiful part of the world - with lots of fans who are passionate about modern country music, storytelling, and a good time,” she said. “I’ve always had wonderful shows when I have headed north.” Lawrence’s gig will consist of a variety of tracks that include some of her more well-

renowned songs along with others that are on her upcoming ‘SPARK’ album which is set to be released on June 14. “I’m about to release my 6th album ‘SPARK’ and I will be featuring the new songs from this album, including the current national number one track - ‘Outrageous’,” she said. “I will also play ‘Our Backyard’ which is the song that recently won three Golden guitars - in particular ‘Song of the Year’. “And lastly I also love to play a few cover tunes that have special meaning, for example I love playing ‘Islands in the Stream’ as I was lucky enough to open for Kenny Rogers a few years ago; and also achy breaky heart where I’ll tell the story of how

I sang this song with Billy Ray Cyrus.” Lawrence promised those interested in attending her live performance this Friday that it’ll be a good time. “I’m known for my fun and energetic gigs, and whether you love or hate country music, I promise you will enjoy my live show,” she said. Lawrence said she would like to thank the team up in Malanda who have rallied together to bring her to town. “The Malanda RSL and Duffy Auto’s in particular have been very helpful,” she said. “I can’t wait to put on a great show.” For those wanting to attend, tickets are available at www.amberlawrence.com.au and click on the ‘tour dates’ tab.

Cassar-Daley to perform greatest hits in Cairns

COUNTRY music icon Troy Cassar-Daley will be in far north Queensland next month as he performs at the Cairns Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, June 1 as part of his Greatest Hits Tour. Cassar-Daley has had a

career that spans three decades and consists of numerous hits that have made their way into households across the country, of which have garnered an unparalleled list of accolades that include four ARIAs, 36 Golden Guitars,

two APRA Country Song of the year awards, nine Deadlys (Australian Indigenous Artist Awards), four CMAA Entertainer of the Year awards plus two NIMAs. This tour is all the more special for Cassar-Daley as

he has been joined by his daughter Jem Cassar-Daley, who opens the show with a half hour performance which has already achieved plenty of positive reviews. “Jem has been doing such a great job and has done so well at engaging the fans,” Cassar-Daley said. “As a father I am so proud to see her out there performing and the fact that this tour is somewhat of a dad-daughter tour really means a lot.” Cassar-Daley said he cherishes the opportunity to perform in far north Queensland, and he alluded to the enormous passion for country music that exists within the region. “They are wonderful fans up in far north Queensland,” he said. “I remember my first time touring up there, I began my tour in Tamworth and noticed the intensity and passion grow the further north I travelled – so I’m really excited to see what’s in store on June 1.” Despite an extensive workload that sees Cassar-Daley

regularly tour interstate, the 50-year-old said the passion for performing is still well and truly alive. “I’m fortunate to get the opportunity to do what I love for a living, and while I may have been in the industry for the better part of 30 years, the fire still burns,” he said. “And that’s what I’d say to encourage people to come

along on June 1 – this show will allow fans to sing along to plenty of familiar songs performed by artists who love to be on stage.” For tickets, visit troycasserdaley.com.au and click on the ‘touring’ tab. Conversely, you can contact the Cairns Performing Arts Centre 1300 855 835.

Field Days set to hit Mareeba WITH just one week to go, the 2019 Rotary FNQ Field Days is set to be the biggest and best yet. On the back of the fastest sell-out of sites in the event’s history – 80 per cent sold within a month of going on the market – the volunteer committee, drawn from the Atherton and Mareeba Rotary Clubs, is excited about what will unfold. The three-day agricultural extravaganza will transform Kerribee Park, Mareeba, into the largest Field Days in northern Australia. Held over three big days, May 29, 30 and 31, the event will feature more than 500 exhibitors

from all over Queensland and interstate filling the more than 600 sites. for the three days. Visitors will be able to view the latest and greatest in agricultural products and services, and support industries. From tractors to trailers, sheds to saddles – a huge investment of time, money and resources combine to deliver state-of-the art exhibits. While the men are taken care of with an impressive display of “big” and “little” toys, the ladies are too with a wide range of female-focused stalls selling everything from lingerie to western wear and accessories.

Rotary FNQ Field Days chair Ida Portella is “thrilled” with the level of support for the event. “I truly expect the efforts of exhibitors will be repaid in spades with more than 20,000 people expected to file through the gates over the three days,” Ms Portella said. “This kind of exposure is second-to-none. “This year, we have expanded into two new areas, under part of the grandstand and to the right of the entrance gates. “Our exhibitors deliver quality – in products, services and support – and often timely specials and deals to suit the

local farmer, grower or support business.” To complement the exhibition area, the committee has developed an innovative and interactive attractions program, featuring some old favourites like the John Deere Tractor and Garden Tractor Pull and vintage static tractor and engine display, alongside new events like a special beef industry forum and interactive display from the Queensland emergency services. “The exhibit and attractions program will combine to provide a platform for a bumper event,” Ms Portella added. Wednesday will feature

the official opening by State Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Mark Furner. Meat and Livestock Australia, together with Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, will host BeefUp on Wednesday, a beef cattle forum where guests will hear the latest about on-farm research and development and the latest insights and tools to grow a business in the beef industry. Rugby league legend and Queensland Safety Ambassador Shane Webcke will hold centre stage on Thursday to deliver a powerful and personal safety message, drawing on his personal,

heartbreaking loss of his father in a workplace accident. Webcke will return Thursday evening to be special guest at a BBQ. Friday coincides with Fatality Free Friday, a nationwide program held every year to raise road safety awareness. In the arena, well known horsemanship clinician Geoff Toomby, and his wife Vicki, Toomby Horsemanship, will run a program over the event. Gates open at 9am each day with Wednesday open till 5pm, Thursday to 6pm and Friday to 4pm. Entry is just $5 per day with under 17 free.

Innovation on display AS our agricultural industries move to navigate constant change and improvement, innovation is becoming the key to long-term sustainability. The way we farm today will be a far cry from how we do it in 50 years’ time. Agriculture is bursting with innovation and that’s why the Rotary FNQ Field Days has chosen to make innovation one of its key focus areas, Innovations Showcase Coordinator Charlie Martens said. “Our event provides a platform for innovators to progress their inventions to

a whole new audience,” Mr Martens said. “This year we have revamped our inventions competition and given it a new look, and feel. “This year, we will focus on an innovations showcase, with several robust, exciting entries already locked in. Entries will be accepted up until Tuesday May 28. Already locked in is The Farmer Meets Foodie App which allows farmers, harvesters and producers to connect to commercial food businesses (restaurants, cafes,

grocers etc) allowing them to buy and sell direct. Similar to an online social dating site, in that both Producers and Commercial Food businesses make a profile and connect, farmers are also able to upload what produce they have available right now and the chefs and food businesses are able to search by product or for what is in their area. The app has been in development in Far North Queensland, after founder Erica Hughes came up with the concept through a combination of factors.

Health and wellbeing

THIS year’s Field Days will feature a Mental Wellness Stall (located near the Mareeba Rodeo souvenir shop). Mental wellness is one of the themes chosen to focus on for this year’s event. Two local women with a important message to share, Margie Bestmann and Katrina Kazim, will be at the stall and will be supported by a number of community organisations, listed below.

The stall will provide resource information and representatives to assist with any questions or guidance required. Organisations within the health and wellbeing tent are – Mareeba Community Health who will be doing free men’s health checks, the Mareeba Men’s Shed, Mareeba Community Centre, Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service, Rural and Remote

and Indigenous Mental Health Services, Lives Lived Well with Counsellors, Australian Hearing with free hearing aid checks, R U Ok and Flower Therapy for mental wellness. Also at the Field Days will be the National Centre for Farmer Health. The experts will be on-site for the three days offering free health checks. The will be located within the Bendigo Bank and Rural Bank sites – D20-21.

Key focus on farm safety Night BBQ with

BRISBANE Broncos enforcer Shane Webcke’s world turned upside down as a young boy when he lost his father in a workplace accident. While a young Webcke went on to become one of the most formidable front row forwards in the modern game, that fateful day taught him the brutalities of life that ended up shaping the way he approaches farm and workplace safety today. Webcke, who played more than 250 matches as a Bron-

co, 24 games for the Maroons and 26 tests in the green and gold, will be special guest at the Rotary FNQ Field Days. He will deliver a powerful safety message drawing on his personal experience – which shines the light on individuals and their responsibility to be safe, not just for them but, as Webcke stresses, for the people who will pay the ultimate price. “Being a bloke and a farmer, by statistics we are the most dangerous sector of any

workplace,” Webcke said. “That’s because of our cavalier attitude of “we have got to get it done”, all of which I embrace. “But what we have to remember is that if that we get it wrong, or we take one too many risks or take a risk on a job that’s not going to result in a minor abrasion but puts you in a wheelchair or a coffin, it’s the people we care about that pay the ultimate price. “Most blokes that you talk to are such that we don’t think about the context if we hurt ourselves. “But it’s about us – it’s our family’s dramas and it’s our children’s dramas and the reason I know that is because that was my Dad and that’s what happened to him.” Webcke said while the loss of his father changed his attitude to safety, it was becoming a father himself – today to three children – that ultimately made him turn his approach to safety on its head. “People say that my Dad paid the ultimate price for taking a risk he shouldn’t have – he didn’t pay the price, we have been paying ever since,” he said. “To be honest that is the

FNQ

SOLAR SOLUTIONS

only thing that changed my attitude when I had my family. “I didn’t want to do to them what my Dad inadvertently done to me.” Webcke, who as Queensland Safety Ambassador travels around the state, said the community’s approach to safety was changing. “If you want to be safe, it’s up to you,” he said. “Even with all the rules, procedures, guards on machines and lines on concrete, people are still dying and getting badly hurt. “We are human beings and fall to the side of “she’ll be right” and we do; people get complacent. “But the only thing that can keep you safe at any workplace, farm or job is you – and your attitude. “I go to places all the time where someone has been badly hurt or killed and every single one of them is in that position because they broke a rule that was designed to keep them safe. “Sometimes that “she’ll be right mate” is not enough.” Hear Webcke’s full safety presentation at the Rotary FNQ Field Days on Thursday May 30.

Shane Webcke SHANE Webcke will be special guest at a barbecue on Thursday night (May 30). To be held at the Rotary Bar from 6pm, the event will feature the former Brisbane Broncos player, who is a farmer himself. A free barbecue will be provided and guests are invited to listen to a special Q&A with Webcke, who will on Thursday deliver a powerful safety presentation, drawing

on his personal experiences. Guests will be asked to make a gold coin donation to Rotary projects which raise awareness of mental health and fund programs and projects which offer assistance to those in need. Everyone is welcome to attend the barbecue. For catering, please RSVP to Maree Lopez via email at jam.lopez97@gmail.com, by Friday May 24.

Be sure to grab an official guide

COPIES of the Rotary FNQ Field Days Official Guide will be available for free to all visitors and exhibitors at the Field Days at the entry gates. The 48 page Guide have already been distributed across Far North Queensland, North Queensland, the Gulf Regions and as far south as Rockhampton.

Official Guide Coordinator Natasha Srhoj said the Guide is a great way to provide visitors and exhibitors alike a comprehensive rundown of the event and everything it has to offer. “Every great event needs a guide,” she said. “And as the largest Field Days in northern Australia, we are proud to produce our own for all to enjoy.

Tractor Pull not to miss NEARLY double the number of tractors are expected to feature at this year’s John Deere Tractor and Garden Tractor Pull at the Rotary FNQ Field Days. What started with a handful of tractors three events ago has grown into one of the most well organised events, which this year will attract more than 60 tractors – double the number that featured at the 2017 event – from across North Queensland and south to Mackay. A key attraction at the Field Days, the popular event will be held over three days with Wednesday and Thursday a competition pull and Friday morning a display session. The committee armed with delivering the event incorporated in 2018 – such

is the popularity of the sport – to become the NQ Tractor Pulling Inc and president Mark Brown is excited about what will be on offer. “We have a membership base of more than 160 people – all keen tractor pulling enthusiasts who hail from Far North Queensland and as far south as Yeppoon,” Mark said. “Since we started running the event at the Field Days, its grown in popularity. “It’s a hobby that is a great connection with our backgrounds – for most of us our that means on the farm tinkering with tractors and machinery. “At the same time, it strikes a chord with spectators who delight in seeing a 150 horsepower 60-year-old John Deere pull a ten tonne sled

along the track.” Two sleds will be in action – one to pull 100HP to 200HP tractors, with a second to pull 30HP to 100HP – and are destined to help make the action more exciting. In the garden tractor classes, junior competitors are encouraged with kids as young as eight competing for the trophy. Modified ride-on lawn mowers with the deck removed and garden tractors under 15hp and over 15hp will pull a smaller sled. The tractor pull involves either a “vintage” or “classic tractor” pulling a sled along a 120m track. Engine capacity categories for the Field Days range from 20 horsepower right up to 200 horsepower along with

additional crawler classes. All tractors competing must be two-wheel-drive and at least 40 years old. Mr Brown said the tractor pull was a novel way of giving a “retired” tractor a new lease on life instead of taking it to the scrap dealer. “It’s ideal for those that want to keep tinkering and get enjoyment out of their old machines, without having to have them sitting around in the yard,” Mr Brown said. “What else do you do with old tractors.” The Tractor Pull will take place at 10am and 2pm Wednesday and Thursday, with a 10am display on Friday.

Vintage tractors and engines on display PEOPLE’S fascination with machines from a bygone year will be more than satisfied at Field Days with a bumper Vintage Static Tractor and Engine on display. Well patronised at past events, the display of vintage tractors, engines and other machines will complement the action at the John Deere Tractor and Garden Tractor Pull. Display facilitator Ray Blain said the organising group was expecting around 60 or more tractors. “We’ll have people coming from right across the Tablelands, Townsville, Burdekin, Mackay and places further afield,” Ray said. “Over the past few years the collection and restoration

of vintage tractors and machinery has blossomed. “With these added attractions spectators will enjoy vintage tractors from manufacturers such as John Deere, Chamberlain, International, Fordson and Fiat , while stationary engines from Ruston-Hornsby, Rider, Blackstone, Petter and Austral. “These machines are sure to fascinate machinery enthusiasts. Mr Blain said most of those vintage tractors on display would participate in the John Deere Tractor Pull at Field Days. “There’s always great competition for first place,” Mr Blain said. “It’s certainly a crowd pleaser.”

Give your batteries maximum performance and longer life SULPHATION build-up is a major problem with lead acid and calcium acid batteries. That’s why the Recharge Battery Conditioning Program can as much as double battery life, according to Gerard Anselmi of Recharge Battery Revitalizer and Conditioner. As batteries age, more and more of the sulphur ions in the sulphuric acid electrolyte that should be holding the electrons, or charge, build up on the internal lead plates as lead sulphate or sulphation. This build-up does two things. Firstly, it reduces the battery’s charge holding capacity by removing the sulphur ions from the electrolyte and secondly, it acts like rust on steel and corrodes the lead until the plates collapse and cause premature battery failure. “Every battery you buy has already started to sulphate and they just get worse until they die,” said Mr Anselmi. A Recharge treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate build-up, turning those sulphur ions back into sulphuric acidholding electrons. “We are chemically reversing the sulphation build-up process, one

chemical reaction to counter another,” Mr Anselmi said. “Once treated, a battery is essentially running at full capacity, provided the lead plates are still in good condition – prevention is the key. Treat batteries early and they go stronger for longer. “Dead batteries are dead so forget about them.” To ensure a long battery life, treat them early and repeat every two to three years for starting batteries or every three to four years for bigger traction batteries like independent power supplies, fork lifts, golf carts and scissor hoists. Sealed batteries can also be treated by drilling into each cell, treating and resealing with silicone, sika-flex or a plastic bung. Recharge is also great for deep cycle batteries used by forklifts, golf carts, scissor hoists and lighting system batteries. Gerard and Debbie Anselmi (pictured) will return to Rotary FNQ Field Days again this year at site F-11.

Toomby’s horsemanship coming to Field Days AS locals and tourists alike flock to the Field Days, an attraction that is sure to be one of the event's most soughtafter will be Geoff and Vicki Toomby's horsemanship display.
Geoff and Vicki Toomby (pictured) run a small herd of commercial cattle at Wonderland Station just outside of Townsville, and their expertise in the field of horsemanship has garnered them an unparalleled reputation as two of the most knowledgeable and respected people in the industry. Geoff Toomby said their display is a mix of both entertainment and education, with two slots of 45 minute shows each day over the three-day event. “Not only do we enjoy entertaining those who are attendance, we also like to get the word out there about animal welfare,” he said. “We will have four horses each day on display as part of the attraction, two of which will be used for tutorials on equine therapy.” This year’s Field Days has come at a particularly good time for the horsemanship

veterans, as they are still feeling the effects of the devastating floods that hit Townsville earlier this year. “It’s been pretty tough since the floods,” Mr Toomby said. “It certainly had a huge impact on our business as we are also rural trainers and we haven’t been able to participate in that side of the business since January. “So we’re really excited to come to the FNQ Rotary Field Days as we enjoy it so much and it will help take our mind off the issues we’ve experienced. “We came to this event when it was last held in Walkamin and it was run exceptionally well.” That resilience is yet another example of why Geoff and Vicki Toomby have

as much standing in the industry as they do, and gives further credence to their prestigious honour of being named an Australian of the Year nominee in 2016. Geoff and Vicki’s impact in the industry is not just confined to the animals they work with however, as they have been extremely influential in training young stockmen and women across Australia, particularly in Indigenous communities. “I worked with and trained a number of Indigenous fellas in the Northern Territory which was an amazing experience,” he said. “And it was from that experience that I decided to write a book about my life story which has been out for about 18 months.” Geoff and Vicki Toomby have played and continue to play an enormous role in helping shape our country’s rural culture, and it is refreshing to see their willingness to share their extensive knowledge with the visitors at this year’s FNQ Rotary Field Days. See the demonstrations in the arena over the three days.

Church Notices Presbyterians continue to meet in Mareeba for worship each Sunday 10am, QCWA Hall, Wilkes Street (behind Meals on Wheels) ~ All Welcome! Remember the former thing of old, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things that are not yet done, Saying, “My counsel shall stand, And I will do all My pleasure,” Calling a bird of prey from the east, The man who execute My counsel, from a far country. Indeed I have spoken it; I will also bring it to pass. I have purposed it; I will also do it. (Isa. 46:9-11)

In loving memory of my husband, our father, father-in-law, grandfather and great grandfather who passed away on the 28th of May, 2018, aged 76 years. Memories are a treasure, Time cannot take away. So may we be surrounded, By happy ones today. May we walk down memory lane, And meet the one we love. For while we cannot see him, He’ll be watching from above. Love you always, Valda, Daryl & family, Grant, Jody & family, Barry, Gina & Family.

DO YOU KNOW?

That the earth is the Lords Ex 9:26 and Jesus says I am not of this world John 8:23. The Lord God can’t be his Father that sent him John 8:42, because the world hateth me John 7:7 Jesus’ father would have to be another God not of this world. A God of love, not an angry, jealous wrathful “god of war”. Ex 15:3.

Gladiators show promise in loss to Roos Gladiators winger Josh Adu-Dwanna proves tough to tackle for the Kangaroos defence.

WHILE dropped ball and defensive lapses continue to plague the Mareeba Gladiators’ AGrade season, there are plenty of positives that can be taken out of their 22-6 loss to Kangaroos on

the weekend. The Gladiators came out strong in the first half, particularly on the defensive side of the ball as they showed resolve on their own line and thwarted any

attacking efforts by their opposition. Their defensive efforts were rewarded 18 minutes into the first half as Gladiators fullback Mitchell Brim scored out wide.

The Gladiators managed to keep Kangaroos scoreless for the remainder of the half and took a 6-0 lead into the break. It was crucial that the Mareeba outfit didn’t become com-

placent however, as poor second halves have cost them in their two recent outings against Mossman and Yarrabah. Unfortunately for Terry Aquilina’s side, the Gladiators began

to drop plenty of ball and gave their opposition prime field position on too many occasions. Kangaroos were able to capitalise and scored four tries in the second half, with hooker Ty Millard and centre Linton Enoch bagging two apiece. Despite suffering their fifth loss of the season, the performances from their youngsters Caleb Dally and Ezra Tokarahi will give the club plenty of confidence about their future. In addition, winger Josh Adu-Dwanna and Ben Cocciolone were exceptional in a losing effort for the men in green and gold. “It was a pretty good first half, but obviously we lack depth with the amount of injuries we’ve had and that’s why we’ve struggled in the second halves this season,” Gladiators A-Grade coach Terry Aquilina said. “Once we get that continuity amongst the squad I think we’ll be fine. “We worked with a new spine this week and had a couple of additions who really showed good things today, so if we can get them training together over the next few games I’m confident we’ll see plenty of improvements across the board.” The Mareeba Gladiators next fixture will be this Sunday against Cairns Brothers at Stan Williams Park.
