60 years of wedded bliss LUIGI and Elda Falcomer celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Boxing Day last year. The couple celebrated the milestone with family and friends at their new home in Mareeba. Lui and Elda married in their mid-twenties on December 26, 1959 in their home town of Ramoscello in Udine, northern Italy. They were married for just two days before Luigi left by ship to come and pave the way for a new life in Australia. Lui arrived in Melbourne in 1960 after a long sea voyage and instantly started work as a timber cutter; he later made his way north to Ingham where he took up the cane knife in the sugar industry. Seven years later, in 1966, Elda joined her husband in Australia with young son Amedeo who was lucky to have made the journey after a harrowing experience as they were about to board a train in northern Italy. As Elda was having lunch at the station with her son. “I took my eyes off my son for just a short moment and when I turned around he was nowhere to be seen,” “My eyes swung to the entrance of the station, I saw two ladies taking her my away. “I left my luggage and ran after them and managed to pull him away from them, they both ran off and I was able to board the train to the airport.” When she was united with her husband, Elda worked in restaurants (Giulio’s) and picked tobacco, while Luigi

worked on the railway and utilised his skills as a timber cutter after moving to Dimbulah. Their second son Eddie was born in 1968 and now their
home is filled with grand kids and great grand kids. Elda said “Life was simple back then, we all had similar backgrounds and we all got on
well with each other”. They both retired in 2013, they made beautiful friendships in the early days with the great people of Dimbulah, friend-
ships which remain today. “60 years is a life time of ups and downs, but spending it with someone you love makes it all worth while.”
New grants boost infrastructure New funding has been awarded under the federal governments Stronger Communities Program – Round Five. The program delivers funding to communities across the Far North to help deliver social benefits in these communities. 10 organisations across Far North Queensland have been awarded grants to fund small capital projects between $2500 and $20,000. Crime Stoppers Queensland and Mareeba Shire Council were awarded $20,000 each to
better support projects in the future; Kuranda State Emergency Services were also awarded $3000. Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch said the 10 successful projects would deliver enormous benefits to their respective communities. “These investments in vital local infrastructure for communities across Far North Queensland are the sort of projects that bring our communities together, strengthen social connections, build community participation
and create vibrant and viable communities into the future,” he said. “Our local communities are the heart of our region and these investments in local projects is about invigorating these communities and ensuring their continued success.” Mr Entsch said he was very pleased with the high quality of applications received from our local communities. “Successful projects include funding towards a Crime Stoppers van that will be used during
and after natural disasters, the purchase of two surf lifesaving inflatable rescue boats and significant upgrades to the Kuranda Recreation Centre. “The benefits of these projects are a major win for each of the respective communities.” More than $4.2 million in funding is also being offered through this year’s Building Excellence in Support and Training (BEST) grants program. This grant program aims to assist ex-service organisations to deliver essential advice, ad-
vocacy and welfare services for veterans, serving members and their families along with war widows and widowers. Eligible organisations from across the far north region are being encouraged to apply. Applications for the BEST grants program will close on Monday, 17 February 2020. For more information about grants program or if you would like to submit your application, visit the Community Grants Hub on www.communitygrants. gov.au

Council’s hands now tied over rural subdivisions MAREEBA Shire Council has had its hands tied after the Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick announced last month that the State Government was issuing a temporary local planning instrument (TLPI) The TLPI means that future rural subdivisions will need to be approved by the State government before going ahead; therefore taking decisions out of the hands of the Shire’s elected councillors. The Mareeba shire council (MSC) is the only council in QLD to have a TPLI issued against it. According to Minister Dick “This TLPI will ensure future rural subdivisions comply with the longstanding Far North Queensland Regional Plan,” “We’ve seen some fragmented subdivisions in rural zones in Mareeba Shire which, if they continued, could risk the viability of the agricultural industry in the region.” The TLPI comes after the Kur-World development was knocked back by the Department of Transport and Main Roads in Brisbane who said they could not support the project, which could employ up to 1000 people, because “of the added volumes of traffic on the busy range road.”
“This is a convenient way for the Queensland Government to avoid upgrading the Kuranda Range Road. They knocked the KUR-World development on the head because they knew the range wouldn’t cope with the extra traffic,” Mayor Tom Gilmore The TLPI will apply for up to two years and means that for any rural subdivisions less than 60 hectares the application will go out for public consultation via the state government Some locals are not happy about the TLPI with Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore saying it’s less to do with planning and more to do with the Kuranda Range “This is a convenient way for the Queensland Government to avoid upgrading the Kuranda Range Road. They knocked the KUR-World devel-
opment on the head because they knew the range wouldn’t cope with the extra traffic,” he said “Instead of planning for the future and having plans to expand and improve the Kuranda Range Road, they have decided to choke sensible development, stagnating growth not only on the Tablelands, but the entire gulf region.” It’s believed that the TLPI was also issued with no prior consultation to the council before being made aware of the TLPI “The tick was given on the
Friday to the TLPI and we were notified on the following Monday,” Mayor Gilmore said. Member for Cook Cynthia Lui has not had a meeting with the MSC since the TLPI was issued but she told The Express “I support any actions that protect agricultural land and jobs in our region.” In a written statement given to The Express from the Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning “Primary industry, including agriculture, is the larg-

Local boys launch relief effort
HELPING HAND: Shaun Campman and Garth Lambert are on their way to NSW to support the firefighters.
WITH the south of Australia going through one of the worst fire seasons in recorded history, some brave local Tableland boys who were going to be sitting around on Australia day, have packed their bags and are headed for the front lines. Garth Lambert and Sean
Campman have agreed to do whatever they can to help their fellow Australians currently battling the blazes in the Riverina area of New South Wales near Wagga Wagga. They plan to cook food and provide water for the exhausted fire fighters who are battling
some of the biggest fires in recorded history. Garth got the idea from a fellow Australian in NSW, who is doing the same and currently lives close to the fires and has been in talks with Rural Fire Chiefs in the area. “With everything that’s going on I really wanted to help out, to do something,” Garth said. “I met this man through a facebook page and I decided that this was a good way to help those in need. “This has all been cleared through the Rural Fire Service.” There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding donations to fire relief, like when do they get the support? Where does it go? Is it legitimate? With all these questions being asked Garth took it upon himself to personally travel down so he can see who his donations are helping. Garth has been working away and didn’t have much time to organise the idea, but after appearing on local media the support offered and donations have been enormous “People have been donating hundreds of dollars and hundreds of litres of diesel,” he said. “We will be setting up as close as we can to the frontline, in and or around their base camp, wherever they are based at that time. “We are also buying all the food and supplies down south to help support the locals so we don’t take it out of the community.” Garth and Shaun left Mareeba last Sunday and are expected to make it to Wagga Wagga this Friday and will start their relief efforts immediately.
NEW CITIZENS: Narina and Ferdinend Osborne with their children Ferdi, Ernst and Helena are poud to call Australia home.
We call Australia home ON January 26, Mareeba will become home to some of Australia’s newest citizens. Ferdinand Osborne and wife Narina moved from South Africa to Mareeba in January 2015, after wanting a better future for their children. “We chose Far North Queensland because of the similar climate so we didn’t have to adapt so harshly,” “We also wanted a rural setting that had similar farming conditions to South Africa and we wanted the best for our children so they can be all they can be.
Ferdinend, Narina and two out of their three children are becoming Australian citizens this coming Australia Day. “It’s not an easy process coming to Australia, we’ve been living here for five years but the whole process started about seven years ago,” Ferdinand said. “It’s a long and hard road but to finally become a citizen means a lot to us.” Narina added “It’s a privilege for us to become citizens; it’s almost like a dream come true.” Ferdinand and his family feel like they have been made to feel welcome “The whole family
feel they have been embraced by the local Tablelands community. I would like to thank my wife and my family who have all been very supportive.” “It’s easier to adjust when your whole family moves as well.” So who will Ferdinand barrack for when Australia is playing South Africa in the cricket or the rugby? “Australia of course!” The Mareeba Shire Council citizenship and awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, January 26, at the Dimbulah Memorial hall at 9.30am.

MAREEBA Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore said the annual ceremony is a wonderful way to celebrate those who make a significant contribution in the local community. “We have so many inspiring individuals and community groups in our community who work tirelessly behind the scenes and it is important we acknowledge them,” Cr Gilmore said. The ceremony is also an opportunity to welcome the Shire’s newest citizens and acknowledge the importance of what it means to become an Australian. “Whether you are Australian by birth or choose to settle here, Australian citizenship is at the heart of who we are and I am thrilled that people choose to call Mareeba Shire their new home,” Cr Gilmore said. “Mareeba is a very diverse and multicultural community and Australia Day is a chance for all of us to celebrate this.” “Australia Day is a significant day to celebrate what it means to be Australian and I encourage everyone to join us at Dimbulah,” Cr Gilmore concluded.

Carrington up for big changes
THE Carrington Hotel in Main Street Atherton has been a staple of the Tablelands for many years, and starting this year it’s getting a modern makeover at the hands of owner Tom Hedley. Mr Hedley has an impressive portfolio of bars and pubs around the country including his crown jewel – the Red Beret, standing tall and proud in Redlynch.
With the change of times, tastes in bars also change, with the success of the hideaway bar ‘Three Wolves’ in Cairns, Mr Hedley is planning to adapt a similar approach in his renovations of the Carrington. With a proposed 30 table dining area with an accompanying new kitchen, bistro area and playground, the Carrington is set to give its competition a run
for their money. The new hotel will also feature a ‘yuppies’ style bar, similar to the alleyway cocktail bar ‘Three Wolves’ in Cairns. With the Barron Valley hotel and Atherton Hotel only a stone’s throw away, Atherton’s main strip will be buzzing with life. The renovations are set to start in March.
AS part of our tenth birthday celebrations, we are looking for the best of the Tablelands and for the past week we have been taking your votes on the best Fish and Chips After hundreds of votes, The Tablelands have spoken and you voted the “Cottage Cafe” at Tolga the best fish and chips on the Tablelands as part of The Express Newspapers “Best of the Tablelands.” Owner of the cafe Josh Wallace said “he was pretty overwhelmed to win this award, it's been a massive 12 months,” Last year Josh was also a finalist in the Employer of Choice awards at the Tablelands Business Excellence Awards. Josh said staying local is the key to his success “We only use local and Australian products and we try to remain consistent with our friendly service and our quality food,” “I also want to thank my

IN 2014/2015, one in seven (14%) Australians aged 15 years and over smoked daily. This represents about 2.5 million Australians, who smoke daily, with more than 200,000 smoking irregularly. Three in ten (30%) Australians are reported as ex-smokers, with over half having never smoked One of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is to give up
smoking and to help Tableland residents give away the smokes, the Tableland council is offering a free quit smoking program. Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella says it’s never too late to give up smoking and become healthier and happier. “It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been smoking, there’s no
time like the present to stop.” “I smoked for seven years but quit in 1978. Quitting smoking was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made – for my health and finances.” Council Mayor Joe Paronella said “We’re offering the Tablelands community access to a free Quitline Quit Smoking Program. Weed under control at Lake Tinaroo Before (above) and after the invasive floating water weed, Water Hyacinth, was eradicated from Lake Tinaroo (below).
LAKE Tinaroo has long been subject to the invasive floating water weed Water Hyacinth, but last week Sunwater the operators of Lake Tinaroo, declared that the weed was under control. Sunwater Executive General Manager – Operations Colin Bendall released a statement saying that “recent inspections indicated that the plant was well controlled in the lake and incoming streams” Work started on the weed eradication project in August of 2018, after significant inflows from the Barron River transported the weed, introduced from South America, into the lake. According to Sunwater, only about “3-4 percent of the lake was affected by the floating weed.” “This is a great outcome, as untreated water hyacinth can choke wetlands and waterways, kill native wildlife and interfere
with recreational use,” Mr Bendall said. “Water hyacinth depletes waterways of oxygen which can kill aquatic life including fish and forms a thick mat which renders bodies of water unusable for recreational purposes.” Mr Bendall said the combination of spraying from the air, water and shoreline was the most effective way to access and treat the outbreak. “We worked closely with the council and BQ to ensure a treatment methodology which minimised environmental impacts and safeguarded water quality,” he said. Sunwater claimed that “they used a mix of herbicides that had been approved by Bio-Security Queensland in spraying of the weeds” According to the Queensland Government “water hyacinth was introduced to Australia in
the early 1900s as an aquatic ornamental plant. Valued for its floral presentation, water hyacinth was released into ponds and lagoons in public parks throughout Queensland. Today, water hyacinth is one of the world's worst weeds, causing serious problems in Asia, Africa, North America and Papua New Guinea. In Australia, infestations are mostly in
coastal Queensland and New South Wales. Water hyacinth is a major pest of creeks, rivers and dams. It chokes wetlands and waterways, killing native wildlife and interfering with recreational use. Recreation users or local landholders that observe any further outbreaks of water hyacinth should report it Sunwater on 13 15 89.
Name change for Old Palmerston Highway The Tablelands community is being asked to share their ideas on new names for the Old Palmerston Highway between Millaa Millaa and Ravenshoe. It comes after the Department of Transport and Main Roads was approached by council to consider renaming the road, avoiding confusion for visitors and truckies travelling along the Palmerston Highway. Pat Reynolds President of the Milla Milla Lions club said it’s something he and the local community had been working on for over 2 years. “There’s been a lot of confusion about addresses on
the highway, we have the old Palmerston Highway, plus the Palmerston Highway itself, plus there’s an old Palmerston Highway in Innisfail, people are just getting lost and confused” “On several occasions the Fire brigade and Ambulance have gone the wrong way. When it comes to emergency services minutes could be vital to saving someone’s life “ The local community will be the ones who decide on the final name “Historically before it was ever a highway it was called Beatrice Road, so there’s a bit of interest in renaming something
along those lines to stay with historical values” Local MP Shane Knuth said “We welcome this – it has been a long drawn out process lobbying for the name change, with Pat Reynolds and the community to get this underway.” “In the end no one likes a name change, but in this case it’s the best option for a safer alternative and it’s great to see our fight for this change has been victorious.” Acting Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Ryan encouraged the community to put forward suggestions that highlighted the area’s cultural and
historical significance. “The Old Palmerston Highway starts in Millaa Millaa and winds its way through the rain-shrouded mountains of Wooroonooran National Park to Ravenshoe” Mr Ryan said. “The Old Palmerston Highway is often mistakenly accessed by unsuitable vehicles, such as heavy vehicles and caravans, due to 'highway' in its name.” To nominate email cairns.office@tmr.qld.gov.au, call 4045 7038 or visit tmr.qld.gov.au. Submissions close 5pm Friday, 5 March 2020.

Flesh eating bacteria discovered in FNQ
A NEW case of a mysterious flesh-eating bacteria has been detected in Far North Queensland. A person from Mossman has been confirmed to have Daintree ulcer, a slowgrowing, tissue-destroying skin disease. (Also known as Buruli ulcer, and Bairnsdale ulcer) "The mechanism of transmission of this organism is not clear, despite extensive research, but may be related to contact with soil or water or insects," Tropical Public Health Services Cairns director Dr Richard Gair said. "While research is ongoing into how the infection is
transmitted, people are advised to avoid contact with soil or water where possible, particularly in the Daintree/ Mossman area and to avoid mosquito bites by covering the body with clothing and using insect repellent." Doctors are concerned because, in the past two years, three cases of the usually geographically confined disease have emerged in the Atherton Tablelands, south of its usual catchment area in far-north Queensland. While the disease is much rarer in Queensland than Victoria, with an average of two cases per year, there are occasional spikes, such as in 2011
when 60 cases were recorded. Victoria saw a record 340 cases of the disease in 2018 and is approaching a similar number for 2019. Internationally renowned Buruli ulcer expert Prof Paul Johnson said that despite the comparatively low number of Queensland cases, the movement of the disease outside of its normal range was a concern. “We are used to the ulcer moving in Victoria, and what is interesting is it hasn’t moved much up there in Queensland over the years,” Johnson, of the University of Melbourne, said. “Now the cases diagnosed in the Ta-
blelands are not a dramatic change of area, that’s still quite close to the Douglas Shire, but any move is worth reporting to alert doctors to keep an eye out. The disease is really quite treatable if it is caught early. But doctors can’t treat it if they fail to identify it because they’ve never seen it.” A total six cases of the infection, were identified in the Far North last year, most in the Daintree/Mossman region where it is believed to be endemic. The disease, caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium ulcerans, is closely related to tuberculosis and leprosy, and
is treated with antibiotics and surgery where necessary. Without a clear indication of how it spreads, authorities have not been able to eradicate it. In Australia, cases have been isolated to Far North Queensland and Victoria's Bellarine and Mornington peninsulas, where incidences have been increasing each year since 2013. Prof Tim Stinear, the scientific director of the Doherty Applied Microbial Genomics Centre, said it was “concerning the disease had moved from low-lying areas of Queensland and into the hilly tablelands.”

The story of Australia Is the story of me It’s the story of you It’s the story of we
In parts it is painful In parts it is raw In others it’s beautiful Inspiring great awe It tells of many people From far and wide And those who’ve been here Since the beginning of time It brings us together And tears us apart
We all have our views So where do we start
By listening to each other And sharing our part
We’re all part of the story.

Hottest decade in history recorded
THE past decade has been the hottest on record, the UN said on Wednesday, warning that the higher temperatures were expected to fuel numerous extreme weather events in 2020 and beyond. The World Meteorological Organization, which based its findings on analysis of leading international datasets, said it also confirmed data released by the European Union's climate monitor last week showing that last year was the second hottest on record, after 2016. "The year 2020 has started out where 2019 left off – with
high-impact weather and climate-related events," WMO chief Petteri Taalas said in a statement, pointing in particular to the devastating bushfires in Australia. "Unfortunately, we expect to see much extreme weather throughout 2020 and the coming decades, fuelled by record levels of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere," he said. The UN agency said that average global temperatures during both the past five-year (20152019) and 10-year (2010-2019) periods were the highest ever recorded.
"Since the 1980s each decade has been warmer than the previous one," the UN agency said in a statement, warning that "this trend is expected to continue". The United Nations said last year that man-made greenhouse gas emissions needed to tumble 7.6 percent each year to 2030 in order to limit temperature rises to 1.5C -- the more ambitious cap nations signed up to in the landmark Paris climate deal. Current pledges to cut emissions put Earth on a path of several degrees warming by the end of the century.

Why we should move Australia Day ON the 19th February 1942, 242 Japanese aircraft, in two separate raids, attacked the town of Darwin. On that day more bombs were dropped on Darwin than on Pearl Harbour. The attack killed at least 235 people and caused immense damage, the attacks made hundreds of people homeless and resulted in the abandonment of Darwin as a major naval base. It was the first in over 100 bombing raids on Australia; other cities bombed included Townsville, Broome and Cairns. The Japanese didn't invade Australia because it would have spread them too thin across the Pacific. Japan also had their hands full with the Americans in the Pacific at the time. But hypothetically lets change history slightly, Let’s say that Tojo did it make it to Darwin, in fact let’s say he made it all the way across Australia and as a nation we fell and become part of the Japanese empire. Slowly over time our new
invaders changed our language from English to Japanese. Also slowly, we were taught that Christianity was wrong and that Shinto and Buddhism were the “only” religions. Imagine that over time the Japanese imperial army started to take our land off us, land we had held for generations because they needed to farm rice for Tokyo. Slowly it became harder and harder to get Weetbix, Lamingtons and Beer. Instead in the shops we could only find raw fish, seaweed and sake. Imagine being told that everything that happened before 1942 was irrelevant; in fact kids started being taught at school that Australia was ‘no one’s land”. In fact anyone who is not Asian is now seen as an outsider. The 19th of February now becomes Japan day and to celebrate, we all eat sushi and wave a red and white flag. Slowly over time Australian culture is replaced by a foreign culture that we never asked to join. Now apply the above to Aboriginal people and you may
Leadership, committment, common sense
why not move it again? Great Britain doesn’t have Britain day, in America some states have changed the name Columbus Day to Discovery Day or Indigenous Peoples’ Day. In 1770 Lt James Cook declared Australia terra nullius during his voyage around Australia, something which came as a bit of surprise to the 750,000 people who were already living here. Not until 1935 did all the Australian states and territories use the name 'Australia Day' to mark 26 January. Australia Day officially became a public holiday for all states and territories only 26 years ago, in 1994. Let’s move it to a day that is all inclusive, a day that we can all agree on, because that’s the Australian thing to do.
start to understand why some people call it invasion day. The 26th of January, marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British ships at Port Jackson and the raising of the Flag of Great Britain at Sydney Cove by Governor Arthur Phillip. January 26 is a day that positions European settlement as the primary source of national identity and pride. In doing so, it ignores more than 60,000 years of pre-colonial history. The first Australia Day was in 1915, when the mother of four servicemen thought up the idea of a national day, with the specific aim of raising funds for wounded soldiers, and the term was coined to stir up patriotic feelings. The date chosen was 30 July, on which many fundraising efforts were run to support the war effort. In 1916, the Australia Day committee that had formed (to organise the fundraising) determined that it would be held on July 28 If it has been moved before
people and businesses to thrive, the quality and affordability of these things are paramount; but I do not subscribe to the belief that these are the sole focus of Council business. In my opinion, to be sincere about building a strong, prosperous and vibrant Tablelands, we must do what we can, within our means, and in conjunction with others, to activate Economic and Industry Growth, Community Connection and Environmental Sustainability throughout our region. All of this must be underpinned by long term financial sustainability. To find out more about my skills, experience and most importantly my track record, please visit my Facebook Page Cr Katrina Mellick TRC, where my past four years as Councillor have been documented. I will continue to attend events and visit across the region in the coming months so if you see me please come and have a chat. LAST week I announced my intention to run for Independent Regional Mayor for the Tablelands Regional Council. In 2020, I offer to serve the Tablelands community on the same platform as I stood 4 years ago: Leadership, Commitment and Common Sense. I want to lead a Council that has a deep passion for the future of our Region; an appreciation for our rich traditions and history and an ability to work with good will to get great outcomes in a legal, ethical and cost effective way. As Mayor I will expect myself and my fellow Councillors to operate to two primary principles – 1: To treat all people the way that we would like to be treated – with respect; and – 2: That the current and future collective good of our whole region be at the centre of all decision making. I will continue to work with the view that Council must have a firm focus on Water, Roads, Rates and Rubbish; if we expect

Puzzle solutions
Pursue outdoor activities or any physical exertion. You may find it difficult to communicate. Take care that arrangements to spend quality time together are made in advance. Wednesday will be your lucky day this week.
Aquarius
Jan 21 to Feb 19 Reevaluate your motives. You like to stay busy and now is your chance to do just that. Minor health problems may lower your vitality. You’ll look guilty if you don’t lay your cards on the table. Be kind to others.

1/4 tsp ground nutmeg 1/4 cup oil 3/4 cup milk 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 Tbsp butter, melted 1/2 cup sugar, for rolling
1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C. Lightly grease a muffin tin. 2. In a large bowl, beat together sugar and egg until light in colour. 3. In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg. 4. Pour into egg mixture and stir to combine. Pour in oil, milk and vanilla extract. Divide batter evenly into 12 muffin cups, filling each about 3/4 full. Bake for 15-18 minutes, until a tester inserted into the centre comes out clean. 5. While muffins are baking, melt butter and pour remaining sugar into a small bowl. When muffins are done, lightly brush the top of each with some melted butter, remove from the pan and roll in sugar. Cool on a wire rack. 6. ENJOY!
Be careful not to get roped into uncertain joint financial deals. Travel will stimulate your need to experience exciting new things. Abstain from getting involved with married individuals. Monday will be a lucky day for you.

ting through to be the final wicket to fall at 10-135 with a 67 run lead and a 1st Innings win. Rovers went on the attack in their 2nd Innings with their dangerman Brenton Edwards scoring 83 of the team total of 164 as they chased an outright win. Tom Boorman 5-58 and Michael Salerno 4-70 toughed it out in the hot conditions bowling 24 of the total 34 overs. Atherton went in to their 2nd innings trailing Rovers total by 97, with two and a half hours to play remaining. Batting to protect their 1st innings win, Dylan Pettingill 20 off 73, Fred Pittorino 31* off 98 and Dan Parnell 7*off 25 got the job done holding Rovers out and securing the premiership. CFN will now play a one day competition. Result: Atherton 135 (M Salerno 31, T Boorman 27, F Pittorino 18, L Poggioli 14) & 4-80 (F Pittorino 31*, D Pettingill 20) Def. Weekend losses for Mareeba seconds and thirds MAREEBA Cricket suffered a disappointing weekend with second grade losing out on the two day trophy. Mareeba seconds travelled to Griffiths Park in Cairns to face off against Rovers in the two day grand final. Mareeba won the toss and sent Rovers into bat on what looked to be a scorching day for cricket, Rovers held out well in the first innings getting to 159 runs before being bowled out. Mareeba was looking to start off strong but an early loss of
opener Jett Prien struck a nasty blow to the Mareeba batting order. The rest of the order held up with some scores in the mid 20s but some collapses in the order failed to get Mareeba over the line, ending up at 112 all out. Rovers than looked to pile on the pressure and put more runs on the board before the end of play, gaining an extra 89 runs before the end of play with Rovers claiming the two day trophy. Mareeba thirds also suffered a loss at Borzi Park on Saturday
against now ladder leaders Barron Blue. Barron won the toss and decided to bat first, putting Mareeba in the field on a near 40 degree day. Mareeba started off strong with both the opening bowlers bowling tight lines and restricting the batsman with only few runs being made. The Barron batsman looked to score after the opening spells and started to get the ball rolling, some misfields by Mareeba were costly as Barron started to
take the game away from them. Mareeba started back strong towards the end of the overs with several wickets falling in quick succession with Barron finishing on 8/168. Mareeba suffered a big blow to their opening partnership with one of the openers being bowled second ball of the innings. Some stoic batting by the top order got Mareeba moving but a middle/lower order collapse brought the game to a close with Mareeba only making 81 runs before being all out.

CHAMPION: Travis Koolatah boasts the number four spot in the world for Minibull riding after the World Series in November 2019.
AT just 14 years of age, Cape York’s Travis Koolatah has broken into the history books after competing in the International Mini Bull riding World Series Rodeo in Las Vegas. Travis hopped into the saddle when he was four years old after being introduced to it by his father, where he watched members of his family ride in rodeos. Throughout last year Travis was watched and monitored through his performances in
many rodeos across the country where he was then selected to compete in the World Series In November of last year Travis was selected to compete against some of the best world class riders in his division, with riders from America, Mexico, Brazil and Canada participating. Travis unfortunately did not take home the trophy, but at the moment, is the fourth best Minibull rider in the world.
Along with this milestone, Travis was also the first Indigenous Australian to ever compete in the World Series for his division, and was also the only indigenous Australian to go over in the Australian team. Travis was overwhelmed and extremely happy with his accomplishment. “I felt pretty confident on my first ride,” he said. “Both the bulls and competition I faced were challenging and not the same calibre of
what I was used too. “The experience was great; it was a real eye opener.” Travis would like to thank his aunty and uncle for their unwavering support and local business, A Touch of Country Outfitters in Mareeba, for their continued support and sponsorship. Travis has set his sights upon the world stage again, aiming to return to the World Series and claim the number one spot.

attended was great to see,” she said. “Everyone improved tremendously by the end of the clinic. “My horse archery family has now extended to FNQ, I can’t wait to come back and see how everyone is going.” A tournament was held at the end of the weekend with Open and Junior Champions being decided. Angus Barker won the Open medal while Tyrece Hohaia was the junior champion. Local horse archery coach Jim Gaynor was excited to see interest for the sport growing steadily. “The sport is still new In the region, but the number of people participating has grown steadily,” he said.
