$1,500 Christmas Vouchers Giveaway!

Mareeba sporting groups celebrate after the grant was announced on Sunday.

Community Cabinet in full swing at the Mareeba International Club.

Communtiy Cabinet delivers boost to Mareeba By Carl Portella Mareeba turned on one of its 300 sunny days of the year on Sunday November 30, as the town welcomed ministers for the final community cabinet meeting of 2014. Among strict security, wind farm and Lock the Gate protesters were unable to enter the grounds of the Mareeba International Club as ministers met with locals to discuss their concerns. Earlier in the day minister for Education, Training and Employment John-Paul langbroek, announced facilities at state schools across the state would be open to the public as part of the open schools policy. This means that sporting fields, courts, multipurpose halls and even auditoriums can be used by local community groups. Mareeba State School Principal Mandy Whybird said “This is wonderful news because the school always priorities having close community partnerships and this makes things clear as to how we can make our wonderful facilities available to the community.”

The real boost to the Mareeba community came when Minister for Sport and Recreation Steve Dickson, announced to an excited public at Firth Park that they were successful in securing $420,000 in funding as part of the ‘Get Playing Plus’ grant program, for the first stage of the Community Bank Recreational Precinct, subject to approvals. “This program provides assistance to councils and community not-for-profit sport and recreation organisations to identify, develop and deliver high-need infrastructure projects, to support the development of facilities that will increase participation.” said Mr Dickson. Gilbert Teitzel, chair of the Community Bank Recreational Precinct Reference Group said, a huge thank you to Member for Cook David Kempton, who lobbied the State Government for funding. “Planning for the first stage can now take place and we look forward to working with the sporting groups involved to realise the dream of having a sporting precinct that the whole community can enjoy.”

“This will allow key sporting clubs to grow their sports to the next level with the view to attracting district and regional tournaments to Mareeba,” Mr Teitzel said. Premier Campbell Newman addressed the gathering of Ministers and locals at the Mareeba International Club before they had the opportunity to speak directly to the Ministers one on one, raising individual issues. Ministers heard over 200 deputations from individuals and organisations, including the Tableland Regional Council and the Mareeba Shire Council. Prior to their cabinet meeting on Monday morning, December 1, Premier Campbell Newman and Education, Training and Employment Minister, John-Paul langbroek, announced the apprentice pledge. This pledge will see employers receive $5000 per annum for keeping on school based apprentices for the term of their apprenticeship after completing school. A further 10,000 apprenticeships will be offered to employers across the state to take advantage of this incentive.

For the past term, Dimbulah State School’s Year 10 Rotary Interact students have participated in Samaritan’s Purse humanitarian project “Operation Christmas Child”. With careful planning, they were able to successfully send away 50 shoeboxes to underprivileged children in Cambodia in time for the festive season. The class had filled these boxes with items, which were generously donated by local businesses and community members. Each box provided the children with new clothes, toys, school supplies and hygiene products. Students strived to provide the children with something which resembled comfort and joy. The students worked together to plan,

organise and manage a ‘Christmas Fun Day’ at the school, to fundraise extra resources for the Christmas packages. They sold Christmas shortbread, toffees and cupcakes and led Christmas games and enjoyed face painting. On Friday November 14, the class held a ‘Packing Party’ where their Year 2/3 buddy class joined them. All kids took the opportunity to realise how lucky they are to be in a position where they could give to those who are less fortunate; especially at a time when love and kindness should be shared. Year 10 student Chau Truong said: “This was an amazing experience and I am so privileged to be a part of Operation Christmas Child.” Year 10 students are very grateful for the opportunity to be a part of Rotary Interact and to be able to service the community and be of benefit to the lives of others.

Tableland attractions shine at ceremony By Justin Fris

THE reputation of the Tablelands as a stronghold for tourism excellence continued on Friday November 21, with local operators scooping seven awards at the TNQ Tourism Awards. The Mareeba Heritage Centre (MHC) picked up the ‘Outstanding Contribution by a Volunteer or Volunteer Group’ award, while the Big 4 Atherton Woodlands came out on top in the tourist and caravan park section. MHC chair Evan McGrath congratulated all volunteers who encompassed the award and said: “It’s (the award) an absolute credit to our volunteers, he said. “The

Heritage Centre simply could not run without them, as they do a magnificent job.” MHC manager Louise Mabbutt spoke with The Express and outlined the extensive activity list the volunteers undertake. Along with making coffee and tending to gardens, volunteers help with administration, building and customer service along with formulating special projects. Special mention was also given to the Herberton Historical Village, which received recognition for its outstanding commitment to acknowledging local culture and events. Tropical Tourism chair Michael

MHC Volunteeers celebrate their deserved success after the victory at the recent TNQ Awards.

Trout said all winners were richly deserved and all categories were hotly contested from the outset. “I would like to sincerely congratulate all winners and finalists at the 2014 TNQ Tourism Awards,” he said. “These awards go to the premier

operators within our industry and the dedication and commitment shown by these operators day in and day out, should be held up as a shining light to all FNQ tourism operators.” The Mareeba Heritage Centre is typically abuzz with life on any given weekend,

with the local markets extremely popular with locals and visitors to the Tablelands region. Last Saturday, they held an inaugural ‘Tropical Food Safari’ workshop which added further profile to the effort that every member of the team puts in every single day.

Disaster-hit regions in danger of losing funding A review of the National Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) program could leave Far North Queensland in dire financial straits, with the Abbott government potentially cutting funding from 75 per cent to 25-33 per cent.

Findings from an efficiency study on the program, carried out by the productivity commission at the request of the Abbott government, has startled councillors within the FNQ region. Earnest discussion reigned supreme during the most recent

Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) meeting, with all councillors clearly alarmed at any potential funding cuts to the region. TRC CEO Ian Church said the matter was a “really complex issue” and the implications could be extremely murky

if funding was cut. Councillors agreed unanimously to send letter requests of support to Federal member for Leichardt Warren Entsch, along with Federal member for Kennedy Bob Katter and several LNP

Queensland senators. Through the letters they will push for funding to remain at its current level, and also request there not be “any more cost burden to council”. Federal member for Kennedy Bob Katter,

who has been aware of the developments since October, is not amused by the findings and recently spoke out on the issue. “Clearly the money will now be siphoned to Brisbane instead of North Queensland,” he said.

“And after Cyclone Yasi and Cyclone Larry, many of our economies particularly in places like Mission Beach, Ingham, Tully and Innisfail would not have been able to survive if it wasn’t for the relief funding.”

with ‘deadly’ new look By Justin Fris

TRADITIONAL land owners, local families and Mareeba Shire Council officials attended the re-opening of the Mooraridgi Park toilet block last Thursday. This re-opening had a distinctly different twist, with an indigenous mural painted by local artists encompassing the facility. Artists Daniel Joseph and Jasmine Saltmere spoke with onlookers about the special designs within the

mural and how it was all connected through an unbridled love of indigenous culture. “We tried to bring alive this deadly idea and express the things that mean a lot in our culture,” Mr Joseph said. He then directed the crowd toward the camp diagram and spoke about the role of the painted serpent. MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said the Muluridji Park toilet block was owned by the local community and that further murals would cover the other half of the facility in the coming months; with other local artists assisting.

Plan to include extra land in fringe precinct approved PROPOSED changes to a draft Tablelands Regional Council planning scheme presented by councillor Peter Hodge were approved (five to one) at a recent TRC meeting. Cnr Hodge had requested additional land fronting Robert and Evans streets in Atherton be included in the Town Centre Fringe Precinct (a section within the Atherton Local Plan legislation). This issue had originally caused a stir on October 16, when Cnr Hodge proposed the changes during general business rather than raising it with a report during regular agenda items. No such issues recurred during the subsequent

meeting for Cnr Hodge, who received support from Cnr Shaaron Linwood on the matter. “This proposed motion is a much better solution, to deal with the current uses of the land in question,” she said. Councillors were also briefed on the need to encourage residents to use their water appropriately; and discussed the current state of water consumption in the area. After being advised that water assets were “under stress in Atherton”, it was agreed unanimously for relevant officers to table a report in the upcoming meetings; along with launching an advertising campaign with local media outlets on the Tablelands.

Village in need of sewerage plant upgrade By Justin Fris

Nikita Fregona is excited about the $1,500 Christmas Vouchers Giveaway.

Christmas cheer comes early on the Tablelands The Express would like to announce its exciting Christmas promotion that will reward readers for shopping locally. Three lucky readers will walk away with a $500 gift voucher pack; all by shopping at participating local shops. The promotion will end at noon on December 19, with all terms and conditions of the competition outlined within this edition (page 10). Carols in the Park, to be held at Arnold Park (Walsh St, Mareeba) is also right around the corner. This event will both open the festive season for the Tablelands and raise money for the Mareeba Shire Council’s Mayor’s Christmas Appeal. Attendees are encouraged to arrive at 6pm for a 6.20pm start, on Sunday December 7. The festivities are expected to conclude about 8.40pm.

The event, run by the Mareeba Shire Council and Rotary Mareeba, will feature performances by singers of all ages, school choirs and a visit from the big man in red. The Mayor’s Appeal raises money to buy food hampers for the less fortunate across the Tablelands. Organiser Natasha Srhoj said new music and performances would draw a bigger crowd and hopefully a bigger fundraising total this year. “We will have a great line-up again this year with all of your favourite Christmas songs,” she said. “There will also be some excellent dance routines and of course, a special visit from Santa.” The event is always one of the biggest events on the festive calander in Mareeba.

SOARING population growth around Tinaroo Village has impacted on the configuration of the town’s sewerage treatment plant, according to Tablelands Regional Council’s Ross McKim. Mr McKim, who is the General Manager of the infrastructure portfolio, recently addressed councillors on the changing nature of the town. Originally built in 1989, Tinaroo’s treatment plant was only designed to cater for 500 residents. Growth has swelled well past 705 since that time. Councillors were informed that Tinaroo’s population could exceed 900 by 2032, and the current facilities would not be able to cope. The TRC has already committed $500,000 toward the project in its current capital works budget. Additionally, it has received a further $500,000 from the 2014/15 Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program Infastructure Subsidy. Council officials plan to consult with the Newman government in 2015, in order to continue the funding through to the 2015/16 budget. A further $1.5million has been sought by council via the ‘Royalties to the Regions’ program, with the status of the application currently pending. Council was presented with three recommendations for potential treatment processes, along with three additional measures for upgrading the current site. “To get back in line with current demand, we need to make these upgrades happen,” Mr McKim said. “The option provided is the most economic design, which is aimed at keeping costs down.” Councillors swiftly carried the motion unanimously, which ensured the presented model would go ahead. TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long said sewerage infrastructure was among the most expensive options available, but believed the tendering process adopted by the TRC would ensure a cost-effective outcome for Tinaroo.

Go back in time to 1914 - some events were: • World War 1 • Henry Ford introduces the first assembly line for the Model T • The first military aircraft in Australia are flown Only a few short years earlier Heinrich Hertz and Guglielmo Marconi were experimenting with wireless communications. In Far North Queensland two wireless enthusiasts, Marcus Brims and Andy Couper, living in Mareeba, were conducting experimental transmissions and applied to the Post Masters General Department, by then the Australian Licensing Authority, for a licence to transmit. The very first Queensland Amateur (Experimental) Radio Licence was issued to Marcus Brims on 7th February, 1914. His call sign was QXA! Due to World War 1, all amateur radio equipment had to be surrendered to the government by 6th August, 1914. After the war Marcus Brims pursued other interests and his spark gap wireless equipment remained in storage. Loyal first responder keeps community heartbeat alive By Justin Fris

WITH International Volunteer Day set to take place on Friday December 4, the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) is keen to acknowledge one of its hardest working volunteers. Tony White holds down a full-time role as a builder in Chillagoe; he also dedicates the other half of his waking hours toward servicing the Chillagoe-Dimbulah region as a volunteer with the QAS. Mr White has been a first responder for the past two and a half years, after completing large stints of service with the SES in both Cairns and Chillagoe. As part of his service Mr White travels large distances to help team members within his catchment area.

“I really enjoy the training as the more you do, the more you feel comfortable when the real thing occurs,” he said. “The hardest situations we ever have to attend are road crash accidents, as we don’t know the extent or number of casualties/injuries prior to arriving on the scene.” Mr White praised his mentor Brendon Goldsworthy (Dimbulah Ambulance Station officer in charge), who helps make his tenure so enjoyable. “I’d also like to thank Megan Whelan, who I work closely with through the Chillagoe Hospital,” he said. The QAS is holding an information evening on, December 4 at the Chillagoe Primary Health Centre from 5pm for anyone interested in volunteering. The team look forward to seeing you there on the night.

MAREEBA locals filled the decking of the Heritage Centre last Saturday, with the inaugural Tropical Food Safari informative and tasty at the same time. With the safari held during the same timeslot as a typical market day, locals listened in sharply as keynote speakers provided greater context on local fruit, along with precious fruits which had been imported from overseas, including from the Caribbean. Local mangoes were a hit, for good reason. More than 1.8 million trays of Mareeba’s mangoes were sold last year and in countries like China they have received a cult following. Heritage Centre manager Louise Mabbutt was pleased with the event and thanked Mission Beach Business and Tourism and the State Development program for providing support to local organisers for their first event.

Have your say on Tea to reward sterling effort regional wellbeing RESIDENTS within the Mareeba Shire Council catchment area are being urged to complete a regional wellbeing survey, facilitated by the University of Canberra. A wide number of issues have been included within the survey, ranging from environmental to various positive and negative impacts that can influence events in the township. Individual persuasion has also been taken into account during the creation; with residents being able to choose three survey options (short, regular or long) which they feel most comfortable with. MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said

specific results on the MSC jurisdiction would be printed in the survey findings, should enough locals have a say. “The survey will give a real insight into what the nation is doing,” he said. “Naturally, we would like to get as many responses as possible; but if we got over 1000, we as council would get a real understanding of what our residents are thinking.” If you are interested in completing the survey, either phone 1800 981 499 to request a survey be posted to you; or go online to www. regionalwellbeing.org.au to complete it.

Santa waits for lists from FNQ children CHILDREN on the Tablelands are being encouraged to send their Christmas lists to Santa Claus early, so the big man in red can double check his list. As an added incentive, Santa and his helpers have guaranteed each child a personalised response should he receive your letter before his worldwide journey. Children will need to provide their name and address on a standard stamped envelope (enclosed with their list) and post to the following address: Santa, North Pole, 9999. Australia Post Executive General Manager Christine Corbett said Santa has been in regular correspondence, and was pleased to hear that many FNQ children had been well behaved in 2014. “So I’m encouraging them all to make sure they

AFTER a long and winding road of many hours and miles over the schooling year, dedicated volunteers at St Thomas’s Parish School in Mareeba have tasted the sweet success of a job well done. A smorgasbord of food greeted the volunteers at a recent gathering; and they had good reason to celebrate as the sheer level of commitment is nothing short of astounding. Volunteers at the school are the backbone of academic and sporting activities; a fact that Assistant Principal Leonie McCormack conveyed throughout the morning. “I don’t know where we would be without them to be honest,” she said. “For example, some of our volunteers take groups during swimming lessons, along with facilitating home reading and maths rotations.” The overall consensus among the volunteers was that they loved spending time with children and

Mareeba State School year 6 and 7 ‘Dux’ award winners Serg Battistin, Kaitlyn Oliver, Rowyn Holden and Benjamin Hollins celebrate with Shirlee Gallo and Natasha Srhoj. Photos by Peter Roy.

ABOVE: Award winners were very happy after being acknowledged by the large audience.

Magnificent night for school’s celebration MAREEBA State School celebrated success last Thursday night at the Mareeba International Club for the schools annual awards night, for years four to seven. The event was a success from the moment the first guests started making their way through the foyer. Awards flowed in all grades, with both academic and encouragement awards presented on the evening along with many others, including sports, language and music – just to name a few. The event also gave the school community an opportunity to formally thank and hear from outgoing school captains, Natalia Daley and Serg Battistin (year 7) and Madison Simonato and Kyle Hastie (year 6), who served the school with distinction. 2014 was a significant year, as it saw two year levels

of leaders graduate before their transition into high school in 2015. Big awards were also a feature of the night, with four talented individuals walking away with the highest overall honour in academics. Year seven dux awards were presented to Serg Battistin and Kaitlyn Oliver and Rowyn Holden and Benjamin Hollins, year 6. Newly appointed school captains for 2015, Ellie Fink and Chase Burns, were also officially introduced to the crowd and gave insights into being chosen as school leaders. The Express would like to congratulate all students and wish the entire school community all the best over the festive season and new year break into 2015.

Backyard Bananas... The wet season is soon approaching (fingers crossed) and it’s the perfect time to plant your very own bananas! If you plant them now and allow them to get a bit established before the rain, they will be ready to take off early next year. Plant your banana in a sunny, protected area in well-drained soil rich in organic matter, and you’ll be harvesting homegrown bananas in no time! Just remember, Biosecurity Queensland states that you are only allowed a maximum of ten banana plants in your yard. Yuruga Nursery sells a number of backyard banana varieties, but the one that they have in stock this month is the Dwarf Ducasse also known as the “Sugar Banana” because of its sweet taste. They are great for eating fresh and cooking, and it does not brown. Plus, because of their small size, they are the perfect choice for your children’s lunch box!

The fruit also lasts longer then the commercial Cavendish but has a thinner skin. The Dwarf Ducasse only grows to approximately 3 meters high, which is why it is such a perfect banana for the ordinary everyday backyard. If you have any questions about pest quarantine zones, banana movement permits, pests and diseases, please contact Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23 or visit www.biosecurity.qld.gov.au. Take advantage of our December Backyard Banana special … normally $19.90 each, they are only $15.92 each with our fabulous 20% discount.

entertainment RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS

THE green group kids from Mareeba C&K Community Kindy paid a special visit to Travel Experience.com in Mareeba, on Friday, November 28, just in time for Christmas. The kids jingled up the main street of Mareeba singing Christmas carols. They were then welcomed into the Travel Experience office, where they made Christmas decorations for the Travel Experience tree. They than ate and waited patiently for Santa to arrive. Once Santa and his elf arrived each child got to put up their hand made decorations with help from the naughty Elf. The kids also got to have their photo taken with santa and tell him what they wished for Christmas. The kids then sang a lovely Christmas song for the staff, as they jingled out of the office, back to Kindy.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Let’s make Mareeba safe In reply to Carmel Musumeci’s letter in last week’s, The Express, concerning the desecration of graves at the Mareeba Cemetery. I totally agree with the letter, and I, like many others are sick and tired of hearing about property damage and stolen property acts by underage children. If they are old enough to commit the crime, they are old enough to suffer the consequences. I don’t care what colour skin they have, or what nationality they are, they need to be brought into line with rules in our society. To desecrate a cemetery is just the lowest of acts that anyone can commit. These kids should be made to clean up the mess they have made, apologise in public to the families and then their parents should pay for the replacement of the damage they created. Parents have children and they are responsible for their children’s actions. They should know where their children are at all times, lets get it right here, when does this stop? Until society starts taking responsibility for what children are doing and the correct punishment handed out, then God help us all. My Mother had a ceramic cross stolen off her grave on Mother’s Day, and also a cross was stolen from my Stepfathers grave, no doubt, smashed somewhere, very funny, if anyone thinks smashing up a cemetery is funny, they really need help. If this damage was done to an Aboriginal burial site there would be a great uproar and they would demand respect and rightfully so. Cemeteries where our loved ones are laid to rest are very special to us all, so make sure you teach that word “Respect” to all children as it is the most important word in our vocabulary. I, like Carmel ask everyone in our community not to let this rest, please be out there and approach Council, Police and all community residents to do something about this

proach being Islamic, but should we not seek answers and share discussions with good manners and etiquettes towards others, with the absence of dark suspicions? I have learned that at the heart of all faiths, spirituality and ethical traditions is the spirit of compassion and high morals. They call us to treat all people as we ourselves wish to be treated. Traditional Islam, like Christianity and other faiths, teaches compassion towards all the creations of God, to treat all human beings with equity, justice and respect, to use natural resources carefully and in a manner

Feral pig workshop success By Justin Fris

A RECENT feral pig workshop highlighted the importance of protecting your property against stock attacks; along with the various measures that can be used to negate such situations. Held on November 15 in Mt Molloy, local graziers got the opportunity to speak with key stakeholders on a wide range of issues; along with witnessing the unveiling of a new feral pig trapping device. The feral pig is one of the largest pests to grace Qld farmland; and it’s not only the back pocket where they do their damage (in excess of $10 million across the state annually). Federal member for Kennedy Bob Katter warned local farmers in earlier in the year that the pest population could explode; due to federal and state cuts on control programs. Feeding intently on vegetable crops and sugar cane, feral pigs can cause a significant amount of soil erosion and degrade waterbeds.

The feral pig is an economic and environmental pest to the farming industry

But alarmingly, it is the number of diseases they can potentially transmit; not just to livestock, but to humans. Due to their nocturnal nature, it can be very tricky to control large populations. The four traditional methods of control can include fencing, hunting, poisoning or trapping. Trapping is regarded as the most humane way to keep your property safe. Be sure to bait the traps with food that the animal is used to, as this should result in a higher success rate. Mareeba Shire Council Senior Land Officer Sid Clayton said he was happy with the overall turnout on the day and that landowners appeared to take a lot out of the day “The most critical thing with controllment of feral pigs is that all members of the community are on the same page,” he said. If you would like to know more about feral pigs or further advice on to how to best protect your property, contact your local stock and station agent or visit www.daff.qld.gov.au.

‘Plain’ yarding greets buyers 2015 Atherton Show date change By Justin Fris

THE EXPRESS reports agents yarded 248 cattle at the Mareeba Saleyards on Tuesday November 25. Many will be keen to forget this sale quite quickly; due to the poor numbers and overall quality presented. Steers were not immune to the recent slide, with prices and overall averages well short of expectations. The pick of the day was one D4 score midweight (600-750kg) which made 169.2c/kg ($1252.08). Heifers took another battering this week, especially the lighter local types.

By Justin Fris

Anything under 300kg struggled to make 95c/kg, with the majority limping over the 50c/kg kilo mark. Bulls and Mickeys made up 42% of the overall yarding on the day. Even with the increased supply in circulation, the quality just simply was not there. Heavier bulls sold the best, realising up to 139.2c/kg ($748.20). Perhaps the buyers had catered to their bull needs the previous Friday at the Tropical Northern sale. Buyers please note that the final trade sale of the year will be held on Tuesday December 9 at the Mareeba Saleyards at 9am. Nominations as per usual methods.

REGULAR Atherton show goers are being advised about a new show date in 2015, with the show taking place on Tuesday July 7 and Wednesday July 8. It has been a testing time for the Atherton Tableland Agricultural Show Society of late, with the Tablelands Regional Council recently voting to approve expansion of the showground’s purpose (in relation to the Deed in Grant of Trust). In a recent interview with The Express on November 5, ATAS Show Manager Jenny Grech said she had no issue with other users holding events at the venue; but believed they could be held in the current confines of the show. Despite the date change, Mrs Grech’s passion for the Atherton Show appears boundless; and everyone should expect another quality local event. The Show will again take place in the school holidays, which is always a hit.

Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter, softened 1/2 cup powdered sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 1/4 cups flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup mini chocolate chips Additional powdered sugar, for rolling Preheat oven to 375°F. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper. Mix butter, 1/2 cup powdered sugar, and vanilla with an electric mixer until fluffy. Add flour and salt and mix until the dough comes together. Stir in the chocolate chips. If dough is too soft, chill it until you can work it easily with your hands. Scoop 1 tablespoon balls of dough and place on prepared cookie sheet. Bake cookies for 7-10 minutes until bottoms are just slightly brown. Remove from oven and cool for just a minute, until you can handle them. Fill a small bowl with powdered sugar and roll each cookie in the sugar until coated. Place on a rack to cool. (Once cookies are cooled, you may want to re-roll them in more powdered sugar.)

Local basketball a big winner on Thursday night

The Highschool Divas celebrate with local businessmen David Mete (far left), who kindly donated the Ladies’s trophy.

LOCAL basketball fans filled the Mareeba PCYC Hall last Thursday night, as local basketball grand finals were keenly fought out by the cream of the crop. In the Senior Men’s grand final, the Stingrays cruised to a 79-53 victory over the Red Devils. The win was based around an insatiable appetite for getting the ball under the bucket and making secure baskets. Brock Hawke was the unequivocal general for the victors, who moved up court with long passes and then sliced their way through the key with ease. Despite trailling 20-9 at quarter time, the Red Devils’ endeavour never wavered in the contest. Their shining light was the efforts of Michar Sabar, who hit several three pointers in a bid to lift the fortunes of his side. Sabar’s ability to glide to the top of the key and drain long range buckets gave new life to the contest at half time. But this momentum was effectively slammed shut by the Sting-

rays in the third quarter, after they slotted 7/9 from the field (8/11 for the quarter overall). The beauty of the three point shot can often mesmerise teams and unfortunately the Red Devils relied on this method too often (for nought) late in the game. In the Senior Ladies title decider, the Highschool Divas broke through for a maiden victory over the Gummaz in 2014, triumphing 38-23. The victors’ best result at the Gummaz prior to the grand final had been a draw; but they coasted to an early lead. But poor shooting in the third quarter cost them dearly, as the Gummaz trimmed the margin to three points heading into the final term. Just as the crowd may have thought the Highschool Divas had run out of gas down the stretch, Phillis Aue and Griannah Cater drained two massive three pointers which effectively sealed victory against their tired opponents. Roles were well and truly reversed shooting wise in the final

Local cricketers committed to game By Justin Fris

THE recent passing of Australian opener Phil Hughes has not only set ripples through the national sporting landscape, but through the hearts of everyday Australians. Hughes was struck on the side of the head by an errant delivery against New South Wales last week and subsequently passed away in a Sydney hospital. The topic of cricket helmets has been brought into the limelight; despite Hughes wearing a helmet during the time of the tragedy. Locally, junior cricketers in Mareeba are required to adhere to club policy and wear a helmet at all times. However in the senior grades the practice of wear-

quarter; the Gummaz went 0/19 from the field, with their only point of the quarter coming from the free throw line. Earlier in the evening, the junior title matches also proved a unique twist on the evening. The Panthers prevailed in the tightest affair of the night, holding off the Scorpions 4942. The Phoenix (who were undefeated all year) continued winning ways in their division one playoff against the Timberwolves, with a comfortable 68-43 victory. Despite the margin of victory, it was a member of the Timberwolves who was clearly the best player out there. Lochlan Anthony single handily kept his team competitive in the match, with excellent presence in the key at all times. Had he not shone so bright, the margin would have blown over 50. Mareeba Basketball Club officials said they were pleased with the overall turnout for the night and were keen for new players to join the competition next season, as the quality was excellent throughout.

ing a helmet is still optional; with several players opting not to wear them. Mareeba Bandits Cricket Club President Robert ‘Bomber’ Adams said he believed participation figures in cricket would remain steady, despite the tragic nature of the Hughes incident. “I expect the participation numbers to stay the same as it was a freak accident,” he said. “All of our juniors will continue to wear helmets as per the club policy; and any player U/16 will continue to wear one in the seniors.” Club Captain Brendan Payne said many of the older members of the squad (over 40) had never worn a helmet at all during their career, as that is how they played growing up. It will be interesting to see if this method changes in the coming months of the season.

EXPRESS sPORT ‘Deadly’ Descendants dominate Indigenous rugby league carnival The Descendants celebrate after the grand final.

Kalkamuku’s defence is on high alert

By Justin Fris

THE DESCENDANTS etched their names in local rugby league folklore, after a convincing 36-16 victory over Yarrabah in the Mooraridgi Cup over the weekend. A weekend-long event which provided more highlights than a Katy Perry music clip, culminated in the pacy Descendants running in six tries to two. Yurrabah took the opening set from the kickoff and made a solid 45m gain. However their defenders made a habit of conceding silly penalties; which allowed better field position for the home side. Mark Dau and Budhagi Gibuma turned the screws against the Yurrabah defensive line on the quarter hour mark, which should have produced the game’s first points. Instead, the hosts were denied the first of their two non tries for the half, when the football was knocked-on, while trying to generate downward pressure for the try. Descendants supporters were finally able to cheer midway through the first half, when the lively Aaron Daniel fed Mark Dau with a curled cut-out pass and gave the home side a deserved lead. Yarrabah, who had been starved of possession for over 15 minutes, only needed one set of six to level the scores. An ingenious cross-field chip from Coleridge Dabah was gobbled up by Clifford Ambrym, which briefly added life to the contest. The Descendants could have named their own margin at half time, such was their dominance. Handling errors proved to be a constant thorn, with Yarrabah scoring against the flow on the half time siren. Leading 12-10 and knowing they could break the game open, the Descendants only needed three minutes in the second half to signal their championship intentions. Aaron Daniel, who had been whacked behind the ball in a previous set, maintained his

composure in the best way possible and bustled his way under the black dot. Exciting prospect George Toby continued to compile Yarrabah’s woes, gashing the defence for a 75m run during the following possession, which set up a try for his teammate, Ed Morrison. As the legs began to tire for Yarrabah, frustration began to creep into their play. Any chance they did have of a comeback dissipated, when superstar Oswald Fourmile was sin binned. The party well and truly started for the home side when the speedy backs motored down the scoreboard wing and were queuing up for the final try of the day. Mooraridgi (Mareeba) began the opening day of the carnival with a win in Pool A over the Garnet Eagles, by 20-12. Light rain fell intermittently throughout the match, which added some relief from the oppressive humidity. The Descendants also began in bright spirits, narrowly defeating a determined Yarrabah, 14-12. However it was the second round of matches where the going got tough. The locals were keen to make it two wins on the bounce, but the Barkley Warriors appeared intent on spoiling the party. Riding on the back of several penalties, the Warriors built a 12-10 lead early in the second half; but silly knock-ons costly them dearly. The Mooraridgi defence went into overdrive in the final fifteen minutes, stamping themselves well and truly on the contest. Mooraridgi ace Ben Apinese had a day he will never forget, with a priceless interception quelling a late Warriors set of six near his own line. Time simply stood still for Apinese, who sprang like a gazelle in full flight at sunset. However, local supporters were still forced to bite their fingernails, as the Warriors scored in the final minute of the match. Warriors kicker Lyle Murgha had a regulation conversion on the grandstand touchline

from 20m out; alas for him, he sliced his kick wide-left, leaving the match deadlocked at 16all. If supporters believed this would be the only tense finish of the afternoon, they had their theory disproved within the hour. Kalamuku would have thanked their lucky stars after this one, with Yarrabah dominating field position throughout the match; but simply unable to turn it into scoreboard pressure early on. The hosts (Yarrabah) trailed 12-0 midway through the first half, but quickly rattled on three tries in the final 14 minutes of the first half. As the sun re-emerged behind some low cloud cover, the Yarrabah mindset changed; with Oswald Fourmile not getting the support he needed. Fourmile torched the Kalkamuku defence all day, scoring three tries; however the pace of Jayden Denman ensured the Pool B match went right down to the wire. Cameron Buchanan levelled the scores at 22-all for Kalakmuku with an emotive try two minutes from time; however Darren Cobb’s 20m conversion from directly in front sailed wide-right. Toward the later part of the day, the stakes become significantly higher; caution needed to be thrown to the wind for all players, as pool spots were on the line. With their destiny in their own hands, the Barkley Warriors began their final group game against the Garnet Eagles with outstanding vigour. Down and needing a hero to get his team home, Jade Arnold inspired all around him and got the visitors back on level pegging. Victor Courtney was a shining light for the Warriors, who appeared to lose some focus toward the final third of the match. The Express would like to congratulate all players and officials who took part in this fantastic event.

Falvo brilliance inspires Bandits victory By Justin Fris

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

STEADYING Brendan Falvo inspired the Mareeba Bandits to victory over Trinity Beach in their two day fixture last Sunday. After resuming at 2/22, Trinity Beach were decimated from the outset; being dismissed for only 54. Adam Roy had a field day, snaring 6/12 off 19 overs. He was joined by his regular partner in crime, Brett Brewer, who took 3/29 off 16 overs. In their second dig, the reigns were loosened; but Falvo went a long way to cementing his place in the side.

An exceptional display of disciplined batting did not go unnoticed by those in attendance. His 19 not out off 98 balls was extremely beneficial; proving to teammates that he is a handy partner to have at the crease. The Bandits closed the day at 8/87, but were victorious on the first innings score. Captain Brendan Payne said he was happy his players were able to play themselves back into form and were excited about the upcoming semi final against Tully (Kerribee Park, Mareeba) at 1pm on Sunday.

Bright future in Mareeba

By Justin Fris

REGULAR night meetings at the Mareeba Speedway are a step closer for local motorsport fans, with the initial phase of light installation completed. Three light poles were trialled on November 24, with local speedway drivers given the opportunity to test the lights while behind the wheel. The ability to race under lights is now possible thanks to the support of Qld Sport and Recreation, who supplied a generous grant toward the facility. It caps off a memorable week for members of the Mareeba Speedway, who celebrated their presentation night on November 21 at the Mareeba RSL. Driving ace Angelo Tudini almost needed a wheelbarrow to carry home all of his winnings; after winning the ‘King of Kerribee’, ‘A-Grade’ and ‘Best Presented’ awards. Night meetings look set to provide another quality sporting option for families in Mareeba, especially during Summer. Club Officials appear optimistic about the 2015 season, with the new facilities certain draw bigger crowds to motorsport events on the Tablelands.
