WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT THE sustained strength in the beef cattle market provides the ideal backdrop for breeders to upgrade their seedstock during the 2021 Tablelands Better Beef Open Day. Record cattle prices and more favourable seasons have sparked a much-needed rebuild in the national female herd. This is resulting in many breeders seeking to improve the quality of their product by divesting surplus animals (such as cull cows or older bulls) and investing in the latest genetics on offer. The third annual Better Beef Open Day is the perfect opportunity for producers to assess a host of options across 13 studs and 11 different breeds. At their own pace and with their own preferences, visitors can travel from stud to stud to compare what’s available. We are delighted to confirm new studs in the Open Day in 2021 include Maple Downs Murray Greys and Yantee Creek Brahmans – with the 11 studs from 2020 also participating again. A big thank you to the seven major

sponsors who have come on board – businesses all committed to growing the beef industry on the Tablelands. The support of Nutrien, Malanda Rural Supplies, Top Stock Agencies, Tableland Veterinary Services, Cross Custom Meats and two new sponsors in Kennedy Rural and NAB, has enabled the organising committee to invest in growing the event and expanding its promotion. More than 20,000 copies of this official guide have been printed and distributed far and wide. Make sure you hang on to it as your roadmap for the day and a vital future reference for buying bulls and females. Finally we ask that you observe COVID safe practices and bio security measures on the day. We look forward to seeing you on Sunday, August 15th.

Open Day is powering on

THE Tablelands Better Beef Open Day is going from strength to strength, with a record 13 studs taking part in the 2021 event. In its third year, the Open Day will feature an array of elite seedstock with stud and herd bulls as well as females on display and for sale. The 13 studs will simultaneously open their gates on Sunday August 15, enabling commercial producers to plan a day of travelling to their preferred choices.

The Open Day is modelled on highlysuccessful similar events in southern parts of Australia. Organising committee president Nick Trompf said the second Open Day in 2020 saw attendances almost double compared to the inaugural event in 2019.

“We were pleasantly surprised how many people turned out in year one but we were blown away by the numbers last year,” Mr Trompf said. “Some individual studs had up to 200 visitors. Importantly bulls and females sold to as far away as northern NSW.

“As well as expanding to 13 studs, the 2021 event has also attracted the support of a record seven sponsors, including new supporters in Kennedy Rural from Georgetown and NAB agribusiness.”

The different breeds featured in 2021 include... Brahman (red and grey) Brangus Charbray Charolais Droughtmaster Limousin Murray Grey Santa Gertrudis

The Open Day in 2021 follows the same format as previously with gates open from 9am until 5pm and visitors free to travel at their leisure from property to property, based on their preferences for cattle breeds.

Seedstock nursery

Telpara Hills Bollinger 541N83, sold to a buyer in Young, NSW for $26,000 in 2020.

THE Atherton Tablelands is fast becoming recognised as fertile territory when it comes to sourcing quality cattle to enable producers to better their beef breeding. The huge success of the Tablelands Better Beef Open Day was the catalyst for one of its foundation participants, Telpara Hills Brangus, to host its first on-property production last last year. The sale was a highlight with 96 bulls selling for an average of $12,526 as well as 35 females at an average $10,571 – the best result ever on the Tablelands. Many of the buyers at the sale had inspected bulls and females several weeks earlier at the 2020 Better Beef Open Day. Open Day committee member and Telpara Hills principal Stephen Pearce said: “Our ambition with the Open Day was to demonstrate to local breeders about the outstanding

seedstock they could buy locally. “The Tablelands is becoming a destination for buyers to source elite bull and female genetics. They are already acclimated to a challenging tropical climate and unlike some southern animals, have been proven to thrive not only locally, but all over Australia. “At the first two Open Days buyers not only came from throughout North Queensland but also NSW and even South Australia.

“The reputation of Tableland beef genetics continues to gain momentum every year.” Telpara Hills will once again host visitors to its bull development property in Tolga as part of the 2021 Tablelands Better Beef Open Day, which will be a preview to its sale on Saturday, September 18th at the same location. The offering will be even larger this year with 110 bulls and 35 heifers on display and catalogued for sale.

Tallangalook has paid up to $10,000 each to secure an outstanding group of Rosevale Santa Gertrudis females.

Santa stud launch offers more options

AFTER 23 years of successfully breeding Shorthorns, Tallangalook has added an exciting new option to its program by launching a Santa Gertrudis stud.

The purchase of proven, elite females – with exceptional heifer calves at foot – for up to $10,000 each from the renowned Rosevale Santa Gertrudis stud at Jandowae is providing the foundation for Tallangalook’s herd. The females boast some of the best Breedplan figures in the Santa registry, given Rosevale’s commitment to data recording across more than 25 years. Tallangalook principal Nick Trompf said: “A maternal half-brother to one of the cows we bought sold for $35,000 at the 2020 Rosevale bull sale.

“An extensive ET and AI program will help us fast-track expansion of these top genetics over coming years.” The acquisition of the Rosevale females followed the purchase of an exceptional sire Waco M720 at 2018 Beef Australia in Rockhampton. Waco M720 is proving to be an outstanding breeder, displaying all the attributes sought by Tallangalook including: • Fertility • Early maturity • Quiet temperament • Superb functionality M720’s first composite sons from Tallangalook Shorthorn cows have been keenly sought, highlighted by a $12,000 sale at the 2021 FNQ Rotary Field Days at Mareeba.

Archer on target

Tallangalook Shorthorns has secured one of the emerging star sires of the breed in Bayview Archer M15. In partnership with Beauvista Shorthorns from Victoria, Tallangalook bought Archer for $15,000 in March this year. That same week Archer’s first six sons were sold under the hammer for an average of more than $21,000 at the annual Naracoorte multi-vendor bull auction, including a sale record $29,000.

Pure Santa Gertrudis as well as composite bulls and females will feature during the Tablelands Better Beef Open Day.

“Our plan is to combine the best of Rosevale, Waco and other genetics to breed a type of Santa Gertrudis we are confident will be widely sought,” Mr Trompf said. “More and more we are hearing from breeders with Brahman and Droughmaster-based commercial cow herds that they want to add extra meat quality, weight gain and finishing ability to their calves – and Santas can deliver that.” Tallangalook’s principals Nick and Alison Trompf look forward to exploring breeding opportunities with visitors during the Open Day. system with his index of 147.18 putting him in the top 1% of the breed. His data features a rare combination of super low birth weight combined with excellent weight gain and carcase attributes. Archer will join a sire battery headlined this year by Yamburgan Zeus H140, whose first Tallangalook AI sons will be for sale at the 2021 Better Beef Open Day. Also on offer at the Open Day will be Shorthorn+ bulls infused with 25% Red Brahman. Tablelands Better Beef Open Day 2021

Breeding Brahmans for performance, not fashion at Yantee

Debbie Coleman has a strong focus on breeding quality Brahmans for performance, not fashion.

“My name is Debbie Coleman, Principal of Yantee Creek Brahmans. I am passionate about everything Brahman.” Yantee Creek Brahmans was started by a true cattleman, Billy Wallace, and has been a registered stud for over 30 years, originating from the Wallace family's old bloodline style Brahman cattle. I have been involved with the stud for 13 years now and running the stud myself for the last three years. On Bill’s passing, I have taken on the breeding of these beautiful cattle. The focus of breeding is on performance not fashion, and maintaining old bloodlines. My style of Brahman is big frame with big bones. They have a lovely quiet temperament. Current sires are from the Bungoona stud. The red bull, Bungoona Ferrero, is a poll bull and the Red Brahman 12

herd is 80 percent poll or scurred. Finally Yantee Creek are getting a lot of poll heifer and bull calves. Many cows go back to old blood lines including Barcelona, Ambassador, Manso and Avondale. All pedigrees are up to date so parentage can be easily identified. Brahrock Boy Scout and BIG Buckeroo were bulls bred by Bill’s sister Laura Wallace and used by Yantee creek for a five-year period so a large percentage of the breeding herd are from this line. A large storage of Brahman bull semen is in stock for future breeding through AI. The main focus is to breed polled cattle, as that is what buyers want these days, while trying to keep the cattle with a good bone quality. Yantee Creek are pleased to say that these traits are finally being achieved in the red herd.

I have recently moved the grey herd to Peeramon on my new partners property who helps me out with the logistics of owning cattle. I am currently getting a lot of scurred and horned progeny, with a percentage of calves being born polled. I keep the red herd at Malanda on my sister-in-law’s property, Nancy Wallace. I have recently sent away Yantee Creek’s first poll genetic test and eagerly await results. Breeding Brahmans in the wet has a lot of challenges. They do not like the wet, but the Brahman breed do acclimatise over an 18-month period and then thrive. Brahman cattle have good tick resistance for the tropical climate. Debbie looks forward to showcasing the cattle and welcoming all visitors to Yantee Creek Brahmans at 468 Clarkes Track, Malanda on Sunday, August 15. Tablelands Better Beef Open Day 2021

Elite genetics at Gadgarra Murray Grey Stud

Gadgarra Nero at Gadgarra Murray Grey Stud.

GADGARRA Murray Grey Stud began in 1998 with just six registered purebred Murray Grey Heifers purchased from Windwood Murray Grey Stud, owned by the Martin Family from Woodford in Queensland.

“Since then elite genetics have been carefully selected and sourced from Murray Grey Studs from all over Australia from as far away as Western and South Australia, NSW and Tasmania.

“We also purchased a magnificent Murray Grey Bull called Chief from Todrina Murray Grey Stud owned by the Mason Family in Dayboro in Queensland. These seven animals formed the foundation of our herd.

“Our strong focus on structure, high milk figures and low birth weights as well as true type to the breed, has truly paid off for us with phenomenal success in the show rings not just at local shows but also at Beef Australia and the EKKA.

“We chose Murray Greys because of their temperament, ease of calving, strong maternal traits, fertility and (because) they are naturally polled. 14

“Local cattlemen have been extremely happy with the hybrid vigour our bulls have put into their calves from breeds

such as Droughtmasters, Brahman, Angus, British Whites, Composite and Dairy cows. Almost all of them have become return buyers.” Gadgarra Murray Grey Stud is a relatively small stud, but what they lack in numbers, they make up for in quality. Millstream Springs Cattle – quality, genetics and temperament in Brangus and Speckled Park

Millstream Springs Cattle Co is a family run business with myself, my husband (the local Tablelands boy) and our four children. Our paddocks are clean, free of Navua Sedge and other weeds. We are not a volume producer, but boutique. The personal handling of each of our cattle, means we have an intimate understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. We want to deliver tailored solutions, not just to stud breeders, but also to the wider beef producing community.

MILLSTREAM Springs Cattle Company ( XM❤ – Cross My Heart) was founded in 2016 by the purchase of “Whataview” – at 1100m above sea level on the very crest of the Great Dividing Range. A small fledgling stud built on the purest clean spring water, fresh air, and pristine soils. The stud is the culmination of almost 50 years of mixed breeds of cattle under the Cross My Heart brand, grown in small numbers at Tolga, and East Barron. These cattle were almost family, and were and are raised with love and careanimal welfare has always been of paramount importance to us, as well as protecting the land, waterways and natural inhabitants of these special places. Brangus is our selected core breed, and we are proud to offer what we believe is a small, select group of bulls for sale. All stud cattle are registered with the Brangus Association. Recently, we added stud Speckle Park, to establish a true, dual-breed stud to satisfy the

demands of beef producers across a larger variety of environments. From the ground up, the land and pastures, through to the genetics of this herd (with emphasis on quality and temperament) has been thought through, to develop what we believe will be the very best – the “Grange”, the “Black Label”– of beef production. This is your opportunity to “springboard” your own herd forward, based on these solid foundations.

We invite inspection of the heifers, cows, and calves – which are the nucleus of our herd – to gauge what you may expect with the successful purchase of our bulls and the progeny they may sire. We look forward to meeting you on the Tablelands Better Beef open day to have a chat about, like us, creating your dream herd for your farm. Cross My Heart. Grey Polls at Figtree Brahman Stud.

Grey Polls on show at Figtree FIGTREE Brahman Stud was founded by Norm and Val Tuxworth, of the Cairns based trucking firm. They spared no expense in investing in quality grey poll genetics from leading studs and foresaw, earlier than most, the increased importance of the cattle industry of Polls. In 2015 Ron and Jan Collier took over the stud after selling their New England holdings where they were large scale Angus breeders for the B3 market. They wanted to return home to Far North Queensland, which is home to the family. Figtree Brahmans are now almost 100% grey polls. In 2020, 50 Ear Notch samples were sent away for DNA testing with 76% returning as Homozygous Poll (PcPc). This was an outstanding result for a Poll Seedstock producer like Figtree. “We believe polls are increasingly important to the industry. Polls 20

reduce bruising for better meat quality, improve operator safety and avoid extra dehorning costs that the increasing pressure for perceived animal welfare seems set to bring,”

The 2020 Big Country Sale in Charters Towers was a striking turning point Sale for Polls. Polls were what Station Buyers wanted and they traded at a premium to the Hornies. Cattlemen and women no longer voiced the old negative perceptions of Polls. Poll genetics are complicated, not plentiful and present a challenge to stud masters to do it well.

“Fertility is of particular focus as it is the biggest profit driver of all. The days to calving interval and age of first calf are available for each female. We scrutinize this data carefully. “The 2020/2021 summer calf drop gave us 55% of the calves in the first 21 day cycle of the joining. We were particularly proud of this result in our Tropical Brahmans as 60% is considered the benchmark in British Breeds in temperate and kinder climates.”

Avoiding single trait selection for a balanced animal and keeping a strong poll pedigree, but not staying in too close require research and skill.

Bulls and Heifers generally available. Paddock sale bulls are in condition score 3-4 – they are not sale prepped fat. The Collier’s regard this practice as a regrettable, apparent requirement of the leading sales scene.

“We work hard to bring this to the breeding programme by Al and natural joining.

Female focus at Fassifern

FASSIFERN Limousin Stud has been operating on the Atherton Tablelands for the last 19 years. Over the last few years, a small stud Droughtmaster herd has also been established. Genetic diversification through the use of artificial insemination (AI) has allowed each cow to be matched individually to selected bulls that will maximise their full potential. Many hours are spent researching genetics both in Australia and overseas.

“Our breeding program is strongly focused on docility, polledness, softness (fat), muscling, structure, growth and milk production. 22

vaccinated against Vibriosis. The Limousin stud is now DNA tested free for Proto (Protoporphyria – light sensitivity), and all DNA tested animals carry two copies of the F94 muscle gene.

The stud is continuing to develop new bloodlines, including a few black Limousins. The Droughtmaster herd are primarily based on Glenlands bloodlines, with the introduction of Minlacowie, Clonlara and Billabong AI sires.

Cross breeding with Limousins increases hybrid vigour resulting in higher growth rates, increased muscling, better dressing percentages and therefore, higher returns for producers.

The herd is tested free and vaccinated for Pestivirus. Herd management includes vaccinating with 7-in-1 and 3 germ tick fever. All bulls are

On 160 acres, the family run a breeding herd, a replacement herd, commercial cattle, and stud and commercial bulls. Their breeding program is seasonal, and accomplished by the use of Artificial Insemination, where they choose bulls from studs such as Wallawong (NSW), Lindsay (VIC) and Onward Murray Grey (NSW) studs to better the quality of their animals. Estimated Breeding Values (EBV’s) are thoroughly examined when considering bulls to use with their females. “Our first purchase of females was in 2016, with two heifers coming from Victoria. From there, our breeding herd has expanded, to encompass genetics from the leading Murray Grey studs in Australia. A number of calves in specific family lines now demonstrate Maple Downs breeding for their Dam and Sire.” The Murray Grey breed originated in Australia, and is derived from Short Horn cattle and the Angus breed. Displaying the best of both of these breeds, Murray Greys are recognised internationally as high yielding carcass animals with exceptional eye muscle and optimum fat coverage. Murray Grey cattle display a number of sought after attributes including early maturing, high fertility, 26

tremendous weight for age and are also naturally polled.

“Although we have only been in the stud game for a short time, our breeding program is thriving. Bulls bred from our own Maple Downs bloodlines have been recognised and awarded champion status or higher at a number of shows around the Tablelands.” At Malanda show this year judge Brent Evans quoted “this bull has a soft easy doing, early maturity pattern, thick muscle from his topline down his hindquarter. A bull that is structurally correct and walks out on great bone. This bull is a bull that can go out and make a difference in the Murray grey breed and also in commercial breeding.” The bull that judge Evans spoke on was Maple Downs Q-Snorter, at 18 months old, weighing in at 730kg. Maple Downs tries to participate at the local shows every year, and endeavour to attend larger cattle displays such as Beef Australia, and the Brisbane Ekka. The core focus for breeding at Maple Downs is directed at breeding hardier cattle that will do well in any climate, particularly up here in the tropics, which is why we breed slick coated Murray Grey’s. In addition, they have a strong focus on structurally sound cattle, easy doing and muscular carcass attributes and temperament.

“We believe these are important characteristics to display as they will boost productivity in both stud and commercial situations. “We have also had great success crossing Murray Grey cattle with a variety of breeds to improve their commercial quality. Crosses such as Droughtmaster and Charbray have proven great results with adding extra value to these tropical breeds, using the weight for age and carcass superiority of the Murray Grey. Currently, we are trialling Greyman cattle, by breeding Brahman females with Murray Grey bulls. So far, we are seeing promising results, with a number of Greyman bulls ready for sale in the coming year.” Currently, bulls are sold privately, but Maple Downs is eager to begin participating in bull sales around Australia. “We have a wonderful rapport with our clients, with some returning buyers. All sale bulls on the property have had an ultrasound performed to measure their Eye Muscle area (EMA), Intra Muscular Fat (IMF) and fat coverage.” The Kidd family looks forward to seeing you at the 2021 Better Beef Open Day at our home farm on 469 Clarke’s Track, Jaggan. Structurally sound and functional droughtmasters

Kel-Lee Droughtmasters strives to produce quiet, quality, structurally sound and functional cattle that thrive in the harsh NQ climate.

KEL-LEE Droughmasters is a family owned and run enterprise situated on the Atherton Tablelands, approximately 14 kilometres from the township of Atherton. Set on 126 acres on the Barron River, Kel-lee runs 40 head of breeders plus progeny and selected young bulls, replacement heifers and steers all year round. The Kel-lee herd was started in 1991 based on Stedon, Mungalla, Kirknie and Bernleigh bloodlines. With Glenlands, Wylandra, Wingfield, Vale View and numerous other leading 28

genetics added over the later years through the increased use of AI. Kel-lee strives to produce quiet, quality, and functional cattle with an emphasis on structural correctness and soundness. Bulls and females are sold at society sales or privately out of the paddock throughout the year. “We try to produce bulls and females to suit many markets from the domestic butcher trade to the later Jap ox market with bulls to go straight out of the paddock to work.

“Each year we try to show cattle at our local shows including Townsville, Malanda, Atherton and Cairns and attend the FNQ Field Days and Beef Australia every three years.” Jeff, Kellie and Amy Williams look forward to opening their gates and welcoming guests to view their cattle and have a chat on Sunday, August 15 as part of the Tablelands Better Beef Open Day. Jeff, Kellie and Amy look forward to seeing you for the Tablelands Better Beef Open Day!

Stephen, Trevor, and Fiona Pearce of Telpara Hills Brangus and UltraBlacks welcome visitors to their successful stud operation during the Tablelands Better Beef Open Day.

Telpara Hills impresses with 150 on display

2021 promises to be even bigger than before for local Brangus leaders, Telpara Hills. Their hugely popular sale in 2020 firmly re-established the Pearce family as leaders in Australian studstock with their first on-property bull and female sale in Tolga among one of the top performing in the country. This year they will offer an even larger selection of Brangus and UltraBlack bulls and females.

114 Bulls and 36 Heifers will be catalogued for their sale on Saturday, September 18th and all 150 sale lots will be available for inspection during Tablelands Better Beef Open Day in August. “The open day is a great chance for people to have a look around at a relaxed pace and with no pressure to buy. Not only do local people come, but we’ve also had great support from farmers Mackay northwards on the Open Day,” explains Brittany Pearce. 30

“Our Brangus just makes sense for a lot of cattlemen. We have taken all the benefits of Angus such as eating quality, early maturity, polledness, and fertility and added enough tropical adaptation that they can thrive in tough conditions. “Plus the biggest benefit locally is that calves by our bulls consistently make the most money for our customers. They have a wonderful reputation up here for being outstanding cattle so butchers, meatworks and restockers are willing to pay more for Telpara Hills sired calves.

Telpara Hills has built a reputation as being leaders in Brangus, repeatedly topping sales in Rockhampton and Roma. The herd also dominates EBV data, which is a measurement system used to compare animals across different herds. The Telpara Hills sale team more than 2/3rds of this year’s sale team is ranked in the

Top 10% or better Australia wide for growth data, including 20 bulls or heifers that are ranked in the top 1% of the breed. Telpara Hills females are especially revered and are known to be the ‘Source of Champions’ by their customers. In May, a Telpara heifer purchased by a Gracemere stud (Yarandoo) last year was awarded Grand Champion Brangus female during Beef 2021. Telpara Hills females also were the dams of the 2017 and 2018 Ekka Grand Champion Brangus female (Diamond Valley) and the bull who won Interbreed Grand Champion Bull in the Sire Shootout (Barronessa). Local buyers are encouraged to take advantage of this resource in the North. With such a large selection, buyers can attend knowing there should be both bulls and females for every budget.
