Tyre fitter recognised for outstanding service BEAUREPAIRS Mareeba Assistant Manager, Karl Metzger was recognised as the Service Fitter of the Year at the Goodyear End of Year Town Hall Presentations held in Brisbane late last year. Seven years ago Karl started work at Beaurepairs Mareeba after working on a banana farm on the Tablelands, assisting with their irrigation and water. Five years after starting his new job at Beaurepairs, Karl was promoted to Assistant Manager/Tyre Fitter under the current Manager Rory Gallagher. Tyre fitting, customer service, office work and callouts are just some of the jobs entrusted to Karl during a normal week. Karl was humbled that he was recognised as the Service Fitter of the Year and has enjoyed his time working at Beaurepairs Mareeba . “It’s comfortable to work here there is a good team and it’s good all around,” he said. “It was a bit of an eye opener to get promoted to assistant manager, it’s a lot more responsibility. “I enjoy my job and everything about it.” Mr Gallagher is excited to have Karl receive the award for his work and commitment to the store. “We all have the same work ethic if there is work to do, we just get in and get it done,” he said. “No one slacks off we all know our job everyone does a little bit of everything. “We have fun but we also get our work done.”

Assistant Manager/Tyre Fitter, Karl Metzger from Beaurepairs Mareeba was recently awarded with the Service Fitter of the Year award at the Goodyear End of Year Town Hall Presentations.

$84.2 million needed for MSC water upgrade BY RHYS THOMAS

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Angela Toppin at the Mareeba Water Treatment Plant that is set to get upgraded as a part of their upcoming water infrastructure repairs.

MAREEBA Shire Council (MSC) is set to increase water access charges as they prepare to replace and upgrade their current crumbling water infrastructure. At last week’s ordinary January Council meeting, the decision was passed unanimously to start replacing and upgrading the critical infrastructure in stages. The current underground water infrastructure used by MSC was put in place 60 years ago between the 1950’s and the 1970’s and is entering the end of its lifespan. Pipes, water reservoirs, pumps and treatment plant components are just some of the assets that have been identified as needing to be replaced and/or upgraded. To fund the 256km, $84.2 million infrastructure replacement an increase of $250 to $450 will be added onto the water access charge to ratepayers who use the Council water infrastructure system. During the meeting MSC Deputy Mayor Kevin Davies said that the increase is something that Council needs to do. “People don’t see what’s under the ground, they just turn on their tap and water comes out and if it doesn’t come out they complain,” he said. “This is something that we’re looking into the future with, it’s not just the next year it’s the next five, 10 up to 20 years. “This is something that we have to do as it’s a critical piece of infrastructure.” Council is seeking grants from both state and federal governments to help offset the costs of the upgrades and alleviate the cost on ratepayers.

In the MSC agenda for the January 20 meeting, it states that the lower increase of $250 will cover the expenses until mid-2030, excluding the Water Treatment Plant. The $450 increase however will fund the entire project over the next 14 years. Council will decide on the amount of the increase before the end of the financial year for it to take effect in the 2021 financial year. After the meeting Mayor Angela Toppin said that Council will be looking at securing the funding for these upgrades as soon as possible to let works start. “For the next 10 years we will have to address this critical infrastructure for our Shire and we have to have the funds to do it,” she said. “The moment you press the button and no water comes out there is a big alarm. “Over a $100M investment in water infrastructure is projected over the next 10 to 15 years to ensure a safe and reliable water supply over the long term.” The money gathered from the water access charge goes into the water reserve and it is then spent purely on water infrastructure works. Council will have a $7.4 million surplus in the water reserve by the end of the next financial year with the increase to the water access charge. By 2026/27 if there is no increase Council would be in a deficit of $5.4 million and by 2034/35 the deficit would grow to over $53 million. The new water infrastructure system has an estimated 80-year lifespan with work set to begin in stages in the 2021 financial year.

Three day crime wave hits Mareeba

LAST week Mareeba was hit by a mini crime wave over a three day period with many shops, businesses, community groups and cars being damaged. The Post Office Centre on Byrnes Street had a number of windows smashed on Tuesday night. Owner of the centre, Vince Randazzo said the criminals tried to smash or damage about seven windows, with two windows being smashed com-

pletely. “It’s thousands of dollars’ worth of damage,” he said. “We have CCTV and the police took the footage and I believe the police know who they are but the situation is out of control.” It’s also believed on the same evening a car traveling on Constance Street was attacked with rocks and a metal bar having panels and mirrors smashed on

the car. A car in the Coles car park also had windows smashed. “When they start attacking cars in the street its really dangerous,” said Mr Randazzo. “It’s time the government did something about them. “I rang Cynthia Lui’s office (Member for Cook) and left a message and she hasn’t called me back. “I have rung the mayor and council is writing a letter to the

government. “Between graffiti, theft and smashed windows it doesn’t pay to own a property in this town.” During the crime wave the Mareeba Cricket Club kiosk at Firth Park was broken into, along with the Sports Hall on Walsh Street on Tuesday. It’s believed that the back door was broken into and then the thieves ripped the metal door off a cage and destroyed a drinks fridge. A spokesperson for Mareeba Basketball Association said “They came in just to steal soft drink, they smashed all the glass on the fridge and all they took was a few cans of soft drink,” they said. “As a committee it’s been really hard, we didn’t have a

comp last year due to COVID. Now getting started again for 2021 this has just made our job harder. “Cleaning up there was glass everywhere, and we will now have an AGM in February to see what we can do moving forward. “Not only did they break into here they also broke into the theatre behind us as well.” Over a four day period the Mareeba Shire council lock up car park was broken into and in a separate incident a Council ute had its windows smashed after being parked at the Rankin Street car park. There was also reported damage at the Mareeba State Primary School. According to a police

spokesperson “Six youths aged between 11 and 15 have been dealt with under the provisions of the youth justice act, in relation to the damage at the primary school only.” The spokesperson also said they are unsure if all the breakins are connected and investigations are continuing.

THE Atherton and Mareeba communities were rocked by two separate deaths last week. On Friday, January 15, Peeramon farmer Gavin Doull died after a tractor accident at his Anderson Road property. Mr Doull was a former Queensland Dairy farmers’ Organisation councillor and was also involved with Atherton Tablelands Landcare. James Geraghty is the North Queensland representative for Dairy Farmers and said that Mr Doull was a deep thinker and had very considered opinions. “He was always leading at the front of the pack for the betterment of the industry,” he said. “Gavin was committed to the

industry and represented the industry on a number of committees.” Mr Doull is survived by wife Jeanine and his children Jason, Brett, Helen. It’s believed that Mr Doull was located by his son on his property after the tractor he was driving rolled. The accident is being investigated by both the police Forensic Crash Unit and Work Health and Safety Queensland. The second accident happened on Monday, January 18 when Mareeba residents were shocked to learn that a motorcyclist had been killed after colliding with a truck on a quiet street. 33-year-old Millstream man

Jeffrey Jack Hansen, 33, died as a result of injuries sustained in the collision with the truck on the corner of Basalt Street and Kennedy Street in Mareeba about 2.50pm. Mr Hansen was transported to the Mareeba Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. A Tablelands police spokesperson said early investigations suggested the truck was travelling west on Basalt Street and the motorbike was turning from Kennedy Street. The truck driver was assessed by paramedics and treated for shock, but did not suffer any physical injuries. The Forensic Crash Unit is currently investigating the crash.

U3A Open Day – an opportunity to find out more

Hardy perennial garden group by David Jones.

U3A Atherton Tablelands (U3AAT) is up and ready for their Open Day on Saturday, 30 January at Room 22, the Glyn Davies Room, at the Atherton Community Centre on Mabel Street. Our aim is to Live and Learn, so anyone interested in expanding their hobbies and interests is invited to come along for morning tea and a chance to find out more about the organisation. Three months after shutting down due to COVID-19, U3AAT restarted activities from July. Of course, with government and medical guidelines in place, there are limitations to numbers attending – particularly for activities taking place indoors – as well as increased hygienic requirements. U3A (University of the Third Age) began in 1972 at Toulouse University in France and is aimed at encouraging those in the third

age of life to continue learning, either by attending university lectures for free, learning from each other or from invited speakers. There are currently more than 20,000 U3As in the world, across every continent! Our U3AAT membership stands at around 300 and though the majority are of retirement age, there is no lower age limit for membership. Membership of U3AAT costs $25 per annum, giving access to all activities on offer, though a small charge may be made to cover operating costs for specific courses or venue costs outside of the organisation’s dedicated Room 22 at the Community Centre, Mabel Street, Atherton. U3AAT offers a wide range of activities including: book clubs, classical music appreciation, creative writing, photography, gardening, healthy lifestyle and walking, Italian class-

es, mahjong, scrabble and cards, lunch with friends, cultural review and movie nights, various online courses, as well as talks and lectures. These talks span a wide range of topics, from securing our water future to the legal rights of seniors, from travel and nature to astronomy or analysing significant historical events. Anything is possible! To this end U3AAT welcomes offers to present talks or run new courses from members or organisations who would like to contribute to further enriching the U3A experience. Membership is required for attendance and booking for any activity is essential as numbers are limited due to COVID-19 restrictions. Pressure mounts over bridge BY PHIL BRANDEL

PRESSURE is mounting on Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and Minister Bailey to come clean on what they know about the problems currently associated with the Barron River Bridge. The bridge was closed to one lane in November, while TMR carry out inspection works. The bridge also remains one lane even when inspections are not taking place or when staff are not on site. Signs have also been spotted that have a reduced weight limit of 25 tonnes adding to the anxiety of locals and transport operators. Member for Hill Shane Knuth has sought a meeting with the Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey to explain the bridge situation. Mr Knuth said it was a very serious issue and he has contacted the Ministers office for an urgent meeting. “The Barron River Bridge being reduced to one lane is a serious issue,” Mr Knuth said. He said he hopes to discuss with the Minister the condition and future of the bridge and a new highway to Cairns which has been pursued for over 30 years. Last week The Express asked TMR specifically what is wrong with the Barron River Bridge, a

spokesperson said. “The bridge is safe but we have identified some issues, which require further investigation,” they said. “The bridge has been reduced to one lane, while we carry out inspections. “The lane closure is a precautionary measure while our team of experts carries out their investigations. “Further action may be needed depending on the outcome of these investigations.” While rumours swirl around the safety of the Barron River Bridge, The Express also asked the local Members could they guarantee the safety of the bridge? The Express asked Barron River MP Craig Crawford twice could he “Guarantee the safety of the Barron River Bridge?” On both occasions Mr Crawford answered “TMR has advised on a number of occasions that the bridge is safe.” The Express also asked Cook MP Ms Lui the same question and she responded with “The Member for Cook Cynthia Lui is listening to the community and is making sure the Minister for Transport and Main Roads is kept informed of the concerns raised.” she wrote. “TMR has advised on a number of occasions that the bridge is safe. TMR is expected to re-

ceive a report next month which will provide recommendations on the way forward.” The lack of personal guarantees is troubling some residents like owner of Lamont Transport at Dimbulah, William Lamont, who said the information being given out by TMR was not good enough. “They should let the public know what is going on and be more transparent,” he said. “If they drop the weight limit of the bridge it’s going to severely impact my business. “If they close the bridge we will have to use the Palmerston and that’s going to add hours to the trip, we would only be able to do one trip per day. “If all the trucks start using the Palmerstone and the Gillies it’s just going to destroy those roads.” Mr Lamont said he doesn’t understand the 50 tonne limit. “When it’s closed to one lane and they have traffic lights you get three semi-trailers lined up and on the bridge at the same time,” he said. “It just doesn’t make sense; I can’t work it out, because a fully loaded semitrailer can weigh over 40 tonnes. “I was hoping the TMR or The Minister would email a few of the transport owners and operators to let us know what is going on, but we have heard

nothing.” If the bridge does need to be closed for repairs another route would need to be found and a TMR spokesperson said that Quaids Road through Wangetti was not an option. “We have carried out extensive investigations into the condition of the privately owned Quaids Road and do not consider it a viable alternative route to Kuranda Range Road,” they said.

Dealer principal of FNQ Hub Nik Page with Julie and her family with the last new Holden sold in Atherton.

THE legendary Australian Holden lion has gone to sleep in Atherton as the last new Holden was sold on Monday, January 18. Dealer Principal of FNQ Hub (Formerly Redding Motors Holden) Nik Page said that to him Holden was more than a car. “It felt terrible selling that last Holden,” he said. “My first car was a EH Ute, I grew up loving Commodores, watching Brocky storm around Bathurst and tinkering with EH, HR and HQ’s in the shed at home. Holden was more than just a car brand to me. “It’s disappointing that Holden the brand has now disappeared from Australia both

sentimentally and financially.” Mr Page said it was hard to articulate the pure passion and pride that Australians had with Holden. “The cars were brilliant, to this day, I will argue that the Colorado is an awesome under rated Ute, the Astra the best small car, and Acadia and Equinox are great SUVs. “It has been heart breaking to watch the decline of the company that so many of us loved and cherished. “Today is a time to reflect on what the lion meant to so many and the contribution it made to Australia. “It’s been a privilege being part of the proud Aussie his-

tory that is and always will be Holden.” Not only has Holden left the building but Redding Motors Holden recently changed its name to FNQ Hub to reflect the new direction of the business. While Holden’s are no longer for sale Mr Page said that they are still selling Mitsubishi, Honda and Mahindra as well as some new brands. “To fill the gap left by Holden we are also now selling Canam, Seadoo, and Stacer as well as Iron Man four by four accessories and camper trailers,” he said. “We will also have some more announcements soon, watch this space.”

Council secures funding for flood infrastructure Mareeba Shire Council Deputy Mayor Kevin Davies with a rain gauge at the Mareeba Water Treatment Plant.

MAREEBA Shire Council has received $235,000 to help identify local flooding and inform

residents before it happens. This funding is a part of the $8 million Flood Warning In-

frastructure Network jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments. MSC has been given a portion of this funding to install gauges that record rainfall, river height as well as cameras and signage. This will allow them to monitor several high-risk flooding creeks and areas across the shire and inform residents before the flooding hits. MSC Deputy Mayor Kevin Davies said that the gauges will monitor areas that often flood and will enable Council to inform residents. “If residents are in low lying areas they can prepare and even evacuate if they’re in danger of being flooded,” he said. “Most of the rain gauges will have a telemetry system and that will be sent to a central database then out to BOM and other areas.” The new rain gauges will be installed in areas like Biboohra, Mt Aunt, Davies Creek, Mt Mulligan, Kahlpahlim Rock, Upper Spence Creek and two at Tinaroo Creek. The infrastructure is required to be commissioned and operating by June 2022 as per the requirements of the funding.

Breast pump access for Atherton mothers

THE Atherton Hospital has been gifted two double breast pumps courtesy of the Atherton Lions to help ease the stress on new mothers whose newborn children struggle with breastfeeding. The Atherton Lions were approached over a year ago by Atherton Hospital Child Health Nurse and Lactation Consultant Sandra Wallace for the clubs assistance in procuring more pumps for mothers to use. At the time, the Atherton Hospital was not in any position to lend out any of their breast pumps and this led to many women having difficulty accessing one for use.

Atherton Lions Treasurer and breast pump project coordinator Annette Clay said that originally Mrs Wallace had only asked for one pump. “Sandra originally asked if we would buy one and I thought if we could get the Australian Lions Foundation to go halves with us, we could get two,” she said. “We raised half the money and they gave the other half, so we were able to fund the cost of two pumps. “These pumps are the ones that were recommended by Sandra and by the staff at the Atherton Hospital.” Mrs Wallace is elated to have

the community support behind securing the pumps and having them used. “My whole aim was for mothers to be able to access a breast pump because it’s urgent in those first days and weeks,” she said. “It’s a really emotional and sensitive time for mothers. “They’ve (Mareeba and Atherton Lions) been wonderful they are always supporters of the community.” The breast pumps were delivered to the Atherton Hospital just before Christmas in time for use in 2021.

Skyrail who had to close their doors for most of 2020 due to COVID will now only be operating on weekends during February.

BY PHIL BRANDEL SKYRAIL have announced that they will only be operating on weekends starting from February 6. The news comes just as Kuranda had started to get back on its feet after international border closures caused the village major financial woes due to the lack of visitors. General Manager of Skyrail Richard Berman-Hardman said that they didn’t choose to wind back their hours; instead they had been forced to do so due to economic circumstances. “Heading into February and March, we can see that the tourism industry is heading into a difficult period,” he said. “Usually in February and March we are heavily reliant on international tourists, with 85 per cent of our visitors coming

from overseas during this time, this year that’s just not going to happen.” Mr Berman-Hardman said over Christmas due to COVID requirements Skyrail operated at a loss. “We are limited by how many people we can carry. Due to COVID and social distancing we can only carry a third of our usual passenger numbers,” he said. “If we kept running five to six days a week, we would struggle to keep the doors open and pay our staff. “It’s not what we want to do but it’s something we have to do, if things turn around we will be sure to look at increasing our hours.” Even though some traders in Kuranda are not happy with the decision, Mr Berman-Hardman said that the numbers wouldn’t change. “Even if we were open seven

days a week we would be lucky to have a couple of hundred people each day,” he said. “That is not enough to make it viable for us or for the business owners in Kuranda; we are all in the same boat. “Even if we operated seven days a week, we still wouldn’t be getting thousands of people going to Kuranda they are just not going to materialise. Mr Berman-Hardman said the intention was to return back to fulltime operations once numbers turned around. “We want to reopen fulltime, for our staff the Kuranda community and Cairns,” he said. “At this stage we are only operating on Saturdays and Sundays in February, but in March we are going to be operating four days a week. President of The Kuranda Traders Association Dei Gould said it was disappointing that

Skyrail would only be operating two days week. “They are a private company and it’s not something we can control,” she said “February is our worst month of the year, thankfully the train will still be operating and we will still have self-drives coming to Kuranda. “We will just have to manage it and adjust our marketing to concentrate on the self-drive tourists.” A spokesperson from Queensland Rail said that there were no foreseeable changes to the Kuranda Scenic Railway timetable at the moment.

Profitable year for Hospital Foundation MORE than $2.89 million has been provided to improve health outcomes in FNQ in 2019-2020, thanks to the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation. The Foundation’s annual report has just been tabled in parliament and shows a strong year, despite last quarter results being impacted by COVID-19 restrictions. Foundation CEO Tony Williamson said the $2.89 million in grants of equipment and research, was the Foundation’s third best in its 23 years. “It means we’ve now ticked over $23 million in 23 years, which we’re incredibly proud of,” Mr Williamson said. Total revenue, including the Foundation’s cafes and other commercial activities, was up to $5.48 million from the previous

year’s $4.68 million and fundraising efforts of $2.55 million was well above the previous year’s $1.6 million. Funds from the Foundation’s commercial activities cover all expenses, which means every cent donated goes to where it’s intended. “This outcome is a tribute to Foundation staff and volunteers who were willing to adapt as needed,” he said. “Instead of slowing down, we approached the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service with a plan to fund any needed hospital equipment to better prepare regional and Cairns health services. The ‘Join the fight against COVID-19’ was a massive success at a very testing time.” Key contributions include

$1.89 million for the COVID-19 campaign, $333,000 for cardiology, $200,000 for research, $413,000 for Mareeba Hospital, $224,740 for Innisfail, $102,106 for Babinda, $122,465 for Atherton, $140,298 for Mossman Hospital and $186,466 for Tully Hospital. As well, during the 20192020 financial year, volunteer hours were down due to COVID-19 but the Foundation is hopeful this will improve in 2021. The Friends of the Foundation network grew to include Weipa, with other branches in Atherton, Cow Bay, Croydon, Gordonvale, Herberton, Innisfail, Mareeba, Mossman and Tully being increasingly active.

The newly re-discovered Gulf Snapping Turtle. PHOTOS CREDIT JOHN CANN.

New turtle described IN what was a case of a mistaken identity Queensland Museum scientists have now officially identified a new species of Turtle. The freshwater turtle, Elseya oneiros, commonly known as the Gulf Snapping Turtle, lives in deep water pools in the Nicholson and Gregory Rivers that flow into the Gulf of Carpentaria. Until recently, it was thought they were the same species as a fossil turtle, Elseya lavarackorum, which was excavated in the early 1990s from a Pleistocene Terrace Site on Riversleigh Station. But a study led by American turtle researcher and enthusiast, Mehdi Joseph-Ouni, with the assistance of Queensland Museum herpetologists Patrick Couper and Dr Andrew Amey has proven, it is in fact a new species. Mr Couper said the study

Malanda High School’s 2020 Graduates (from L - R) Bailey Wakeford, Tahlia Clennar, Lari Wilkinson, Riley Jones, Mia Grace and Rohan Hickey with Deputy Principal Ben Harding (centre) excited to receive the Top 6 ATAR scores in their grade.

BY ELLIE FINK WITH the 2021 school year now here, Malanda State High School Principal Gary Toshach has recognised last year’s highest achieving seniors. Last year, the system was changed from the old OP system to the newer ATAR system (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank). Unlike the ranking of 1-25 in the OP system, the ATAR system ranks the highest score at 99 making an ATAR 99 the equivalent to an OP1. Six out of the 46 students particularly excelled, scoring

an ATAR over 94 (OP4), two of these students scored an ATAR 99 (OP1). Under the new system, students can decide not to inform their school what score they received. The students who shared their score with the school were Riley Jones (ATAR 99.8), Rohan Hickey (98.8), Mia Grace (98.25), Lari Wilkinson (97.5), Bailey Wakeford (95.9) and Tahlia Clennar (94.4). Mr Toshach has expressed how proud he is of the 2020 graduating class, considering it was the toughest year in his 40 years of teaching. “The COVID year bought

us interruptions, stresses and anxieties,” he said. “Online and in school programs were available for students, as well as tutoring. “I have tutored some of the kids myself after school and paid professionals to come in so that students who don't have access to tutors can have it with us. “They have engaged well and taken every opportunity to succeed.” Riley Jones who scored 99.8, says that his preparation for the exam was two to three hours of studying every night and four hours in the days leading up to the external ex-

ams. “I got a really good score and it has got me into the course I wanted.” Riley has the below advice for 2021 seniors. “Read the syllabus it is everything you need to know, learn (the content) in your own words, as the teacher’s words can be hard to remember,” he said. “Also revise throughout the year so that you aren’t cramming it towards the end of the year.” With his astounding score, Riley will be off to university to study advanced computing science.

showed several differences between the Riversleigh fossil and the modern snapping turtle, including size. “The fossil specimen Elseya lavarackorum can now be regarded as an extinct Pleistocene species, inhabiting rivers in the Gulf of Carpentaria less than 2.6 million years ago,” Mr Couper said. “With a shell that can reach up to 35 centimetres, the Gulf Snapper is most closely related to snapping turtles in coastal regions of eastern Queensland. “The top of the head is encased in a thick, horny shield and large females have a pale face. “The snapping turtles are known to feed on fallen fruit from cluster figs that overhang rivers along with algae, freshwater mussels and aquatic insect larvae.”

BY PHIL BRANDEL

Last chance to enter KP Mango compition THIS week marks the last chance for you to enter your monster mangoes in The Express Newspaper’s KP Mango Competition as it ends this Sunday, January 31. We have had some tasty entries in the competition this year, but there is still just enough time to enter before the winners are announced in the February 3 edition of The

Express. The rules for the competition are simple. The mango must be of the Kensington Pride (KP) variety, it must be photographed on electronic scales clearly showing the weight and most importantly it must be viewed by Joe Moro from FNQ Growers or a member of The Express Newspaper for verification

and consumption. First place will go to the heaviest mango and the winner will take home a $500 cash prize, second receives $300 and third gets $200. There is still a chance to knock current leader, Ben Stabile and his 1.502kg mango off the top of the table – so get your mango in before its to late.

AFTER three consecutive years of producing more than 10 million trays, Australia's mango industry yields crashed during the 2020-21 season. The national crop forecast is now sitting at below 7 million trays and could fall further, with the current heavy rain causing more challenges for growers. The lack of workers to pick crops has been well publicised over the past few months and while the labour shortage has hurt the mango industry, the weather is mostly to blame. Australian Mangoes Spokesperson Matt Dwyer said that considering 2020 has an unprecedented bushfire crisis followed by a global pandemic, Queensland’s mango growers have shown true resilience to produce a forecasted 3.9 million trays of Australia’s favourite summer fruit. “We know quality mangoes require the right climate preseason, during flowering and during the season, which is why due to the current volatile weather, forecasters have predicted the 2021 Queensland crop be impacted by around 20 per cent,” he said. “While we may have a little less supply, we know Queensland growers will still deliver quality produce for Australians. “As for the current North Queensland rain, it’s still unclear at this stage as each farm has been impacted differently by the weather conditions. Some varieties seem to have fared better than others as well.” Mutchilba Mango farmer

Anna Maloberti said 2020 had been a disaster after losing 99 per cent of her Kensington Pride (KP) crop. “We are down to one per cent of our KP crop, we lost the other 99 per cent to the dry and the frost in late June,” she said. “It’s been a disaster as we have no crop or no money this year. “We only sent half a tonne of KP’s and we lost about 50 per cent of our R2’s which was only a couple of tonne. “We also lost half of our Keitt’s crop.” To make matters worse Anna said they also lost most of their Lychee crop. “Even our lychees got burnt by the frost and then the birds

and flying foxes ate them all,” she said. “In lychees we went from 3500 trays to only 500 trays. “Overall we have only been able to send less than 20 per cent of all our crops combined.” Even though 2020 had been a rough year with no crops or money, Anna is optimistic about next year’s crop due to the current rain. “By the time we get to November it’s going to be hard to pay the bills,” she said. “But the current rain should be good for next year, we finally have the water table up which we haven’t had for a few years, fingers crossed the fruit is better next year.”

LETTERS to the EDITOR HAVE YOUR SAY

Government infected with B-Bitis B-BITIS – an unseen condition affecting politicians resulting in failure to develop infrastructure for the benefit of the grassroots of society This Kuranda Road debacle is a symptom of 'bungling/ bureaucraticitis (B-Bitis) that has engulfed Government, both State and Federal... an indictment of massive incompetence over the years. Now we see the Ministry of Transport and Main Roads QLD is not fit for purpose. To spend $43 million on widening the Mareeba to Kuranda road, and not check the structure of the Barron River Bridge is tantamount to a criminal waste of money. The Queensland Premier has a lot to answer for by depriving the north of money for infrastructure that would develop it to provide food in abundance rather than import. Another B-Bitis is the failure of the Government to attract farm workers to harvest regional crops with a loss of $31 million to the industry, and reading letters from the public it is obvious that the grassroots of society know what has to be done. B-Bitis has a magical effect on politicians, it numbs the brain, and thinking and planning ahead is lost in all the studies and designs. Maybe an approach to the billionaire philanthropists to fund the new road and just get it done. Brian Godfrey MAREEBA

Bettong, and the dedicated people working to bring it back from the brink are to be commended. But until one of the main causes of the decline, and extinction, of so much of our native wildlife, (apart from humans) - cats, is addressed, they’re fighting a losing battle. Feral and domestic cats kill millions of native animals each year. Cat owners are not required to keep their animals contained in their own property like dog owners are, and few are responsible enough to do so of their own accord. Alice Springs had an active cat control program years ago where the council set cat traps every night, and if your cat was caught it cost $90 to get it back. Malanda badly needs such a program. Parks often have evidence of nearby cats murderous nightly marauding. Please, Council, get serious about protecting our native fauna. Get serious about cat control. Sharon Northage MALANDA

Top job I JUST want to say congratulations to Phil Brandel on the top job that he did with your ‘Is this bridge safe?’ article, opinion, and front page of last weeks Express. That was a damn good bit of reporting. Bet the Minister and TMR don’t have to travel over the bridge. Having left the Register and News Corp, your articles are the only ones I read these days. We have no idea of the true value and importance of local newspapers until they are gone. Keep up the great work. Brigitte Daley Millaa Millaa

Council needs a refresher course ON August 25, 2020, I first complained to TRC about explosive noise emissions constantly waking me around 3am-4am coming from the Pioneer concrete Plant in Malanda – I could not return to sleep. My husband and I understood their hours to be between 6am and 6pm. After a few weeks and another complaint, I received misinformation from a TRC officer and there was no change. The 3am-4am emissions continued and my health deteriorated through sleep deprivation. I consulted my GP and took double quantities of herbal sleeping tablets with no result. On November 26, the plant operated day and night for 10 days 24 hours continuously and sounded like a war zone. The neighbours were never consulted. Many local authorities were contacted but nothing changed. The bedlam continued. Yesterday January 14, 2021 information came from the TRC that Pioneer had operated during the described periods out of its prescribed hours and without a permit. This information took 152 days from my first complaint on August the 25th 2020 to be relayed to me. May I suggest that instead of spending ‘Rural lifestyle’ rates on staff body cameras to detect ‘rude’ rate payers that some TRC officers could use our taxes to enroll in a refresher course in public relations and learn to adopt a kinder approach to problem solving and even learn to apologise and say ‘sorry’ to victims of their Bad management. Libby Pender MALANDA

Bad traffic control adds to bridge issue PEOPLE seem to have forgotten an incident in regard to the Baron River Bridge at Kuranda Last year I was travelling to Cairns from Tolga and as per usual there was road works on the Cairns side of the bridge and traffic control had been set up at this point. This meant that traffic was banked up across the whole length of the bridge back to the Kuranda side. I was stopped in the line of traffic approximately in the middle of the bridge. This line of traffic included heavy trucks, busses and cars and the weight must have been considerable. The light then changed and traffic began to move from the Cairns side of the bridge and because it had been stopped at the lights it was in a continuous line so that both lanes of the bridge where chock a block with vehicles. This must have been well in excess of what the bridge was designed to carry. I was sitting in my car and I could feel the bridge swaying and shuddering and believe me I was very glad to get off it as soon as possible. Now they say the bridge is in a damaged condition and I can’t help wondering if the stupidity of the traffic control on that day was the cause of the damage to the bridge. The control should have been at both ends of the bridge so that only one lane is in use at any one time and no traffic standing on the bridge at all. Bryan Dodding TOLGA

OPINION With Phil Brandel @Philbrandel1

Law and/or order LAST week in Mareeba there was a mini crime wave, with the post office building having windows smashed, cars driving through Constance street had rocks thrown at them, damage was done to some cars in the Coles Car park and a few other incidents. The above seems to be a fairly typical 48 hours in Mareeba. And in other news, I was recently involved in a road rage incident where a guy got out of his car in the middle of the highway and started trying to smash my window with his fist. I’m not sure what triggered him, maybe he doesn’t like this column. I rang Triple-0 a few seconds later and was told I had to go to the police station to report my crime. At the police station, I was told they were very busy, could I come back another time? The next day I tried again but being a Saturday the police station was closed. I didn’t realise that crime took a holiday on the weekends. On Sunday I tried at another station; three people were waiting in front of me who had already been there for over an hour. On the fourth day (Monday) I finally got to see a very understanding and sympathetic senior constable who I cannot fault. None of the above is the fault of the Queensland Police Service (QPS). The fault lays with successive governments who have cut budgets to QPS and have done nothing to address crime. How can a police station be closed in the middle of the weekend? Why did a mini crime

spree take place over a 48-hour period in Mareeba last week? The answer to both questions is, there are not enough officers or resources for the police. Insiders tell me that senior officers are leaving quicker than they can be replaced. And why wouldn’t they, they get abused, spat on, possibly bashed or stabbed. It’s a thankless task and when they do apprehend a criminal, they get a slap on the wrist and are straight back on the street. Some officers have told me all the paperwork and overtime is not worth it, they just give up. Nearly 12 months ago, The Member for Cook, Cynthia Lui held an emergency round table meeting to tackle the growing youth crime problem in Mareeba. We are still waiting for some solid action. We can have round tables and conversations until the next election comes around or we can have swift and consistent punishment for offences regardless of age. When a minor (Under 12) is tried for an offence, the parents or guardians should be required to attend the proceedings so that the judge can get a sense of the family situation. If parents don’t turn up or the offending continues they can also be charged. We need to make sure that people know there are consequences to their actions and when they do wrong, the police will respond. When it comes to serious recidivist offenders there should be nothing but firm justice. Law and order is not working, it’s time for action and justice.

A 15,600HA cattle ranch named Ellendale Station in Queensland’s Einasleigh has been snapped up by Moola Brangus Stud owners Bruce and Sandy Ryan. The Ryan’s bought the large-scale cattle breeding station for around $7,500,000 through a private treaty sale from long term owners Phillip and Terry Cranwell. After 44 years of owning the far north Queensland property, the Cranwell’s are now ready to downsize to the Atherton Tablelands. The sale was facilitated by Ray White Rural Atherton agent Morgan Brennan. The Moola Brangus Stud owners, who are based in Sapphire, in Queensland’s Central Highlands, said they are excited to be expanding their stud. “We’re looking forward to bringing our Brangus genetics up into the north,” Mr Ryan said. “We have worked with a number of agents in the past and Morgan has gone above and beyond, and I doubt you would find better.” Meanwhile, the Cranwell’s were thrilled by the successful campaign which lasted for four weeks and said it was not long before Mr Brennan began bringing them offers. “Morgan was right on the market. His dedication was astounding, he has stayed in touch right through to settlement which was greatly appreciated,” Ms Cranwell said. Mr Brennan described the campaign as quick and said

Sellers Terry and Phillip Cranwell with agent Morgan Brennan.

there was solid interest from the buyers from the beginning. “They wanted to secure the property because of the consistent rainfall in the area,” Mr Brennan said. “The bonus was the Einasleigh river frontage, quality, mixed herd of cattle and wellmaintained infrastructure.” Like many regional towns in Australia, Mr Brennan said the Einasleigh market has been strong. “We are seeing a lot of outside buyers coming in from Townsville, Mt Isa and Cairns looking to get into ru-

ral lifestyle properties. The market is booming but the issue we are finding is that we don’t have the stock to keep up with demand,” he said. ‘Ellendale Station’ went to contract on December 2 and settled on December 15, 2020. Approximately 1,500 head of mixed cattle were included in the sale. Ray White Rural Atherton Principal Margaret Black credits the successful sale to the power of her sales team working together after fellow agent Suzey Whitby connected Mr Brennan with the Cranwell’s.

Waters sets sights on Superbike Series

LOCAL Mareeba motorbike racer Liam Waters is set to be the only Far North Queensland participant in the upcoming Australian Superbike (ASBK) Series coming off some impressive performances last year. After wrapping up the QLD F3 Road Racing Title in October 2020, Liam went on to compete and finish third at the QLD 2Hr Road Race Endurance event in November. To cap it all off, he was victorious at the Tasmanian Endurance round finishing off a successful year of racing for the young rider. With ongoing restrictions, it is unlikely Liam will be able to race overseas in 2021, so he has now set his sights on the ASBK Series looking to race in the Supersport 300 class. Liam’s father Damien Waters said that Liam will be competitive but not knowing some of the tracks puts him at a disadvantage. “Initially there will be a bit of a learning curve and seeing if his bike is competitive, as a rider he can run at the top level in that class,” he said. “He has the ability but there will be two tracks that he hasn’t been to before, so I don’t expect him to be finishing on top of the podium. “At the moment there are about 30 riders in the field so our initial goal is to be in the top 10.” Liam is looking forward to the Superbike Series after his solid performances late last year. “The Superbike Series is fiercely competitive with a lot of talented riders and teams involved,” he said. “I am looking forward to getting back on the bike and the challenge of it all.” The first round of the ASBK Series is set to kick off on Phillip Island in Victoria on February 20 and 21.

Mareeba-based motorbike racer Liam Waters will be the only Far North Queensland rider in the upcoming Australian Superbike Series held in February.

Vouchers to help get kids playing sport YOUNGSTERS will get the chance to kickstart their 2021 sporting seasons with round four of the Queensland Government’s FairPlay vouchers now open. The vouchers help to pay club registration fees for 50,000 young Queenslanders in low-income families and give them a chance to get out

onto the field. There are many sports and activities that the vouchers can be used for including cricket, tennis, football, scouts, martial arts and many more. Sport Minister Stirling Hinchcliffe said the $7.5 million investment was keeping kids fit and off the couch.

“These vouchers could be the difference for many kids between getting fit and active or spending the season on the couch,” he said. “FairPlay reduces one of the barriers standing between some young Queenslanders making the team – the cost of joining aclub. “We have more than 4,500

registered activity providers onboard across the state with a sport or activity to help young Queenslanders get involved in 2021.” Mr Hinchliffe said 55,760 FairPlay vouchers were redeemed in Rounds one to three, beginning in mid-2019. “All FairPlay activities with local clubs promote an

active, healthy lifestyle in a COVID-safe environment,” he said. “This year FairPlay vouchers could be the key to unlocking the athletic and strategic potential of Queensland’s future stars of the mat, court or field. “With FairPlay, it’s worth giving it a go.”

The Mareeba Tennis Club is encouraging new and experienced tennis players to come along to their open day this Saturday.

NEW and returning tennis players are being encouraged to attend the Mareeba Tennis Club’s open day this Saturday, January 30. Tennis fans old and new are welcome with free training and advice offered by the experienced members of the Mareeba Tennis Club. Starting at 9am, the day will consist of free activities including ANZ Tennis Hot Shots, coaching, free play, prizes and more before finishing off around 12:30pm. Mareeba Tennis Club President Mark Keating said that it will be a great day out for the whole family. “People can come along and check out the game of tennis,” he said. “We are more than happy to give them a racket and put them on the court.

“We will find them someone to hit with or introduce them to a coach and talk to them about how they might get involved in the sport.” Mr Keating is also hoping that it might bring existing players back onto the courts who have moved to Mareeba or stopped playing. “Not just new players but people that have played before in other towns or even in Mareeba,” he said. “Try to get them back into the sport that they gave up for various reasons. “We always look forward to this day because we are keen to get more people into the sport of tennis.” The Mareeba Tennis Club is located on Chewko Road in Mareeba and racquets will be provided for those who do not have their own.
