Shop Tablelands gift card given green light
SHOP LOCAL: Annette Wadley from Atherton Gas and Camping and Bree Hargraves from the ATCC with the gift card mock ups.
The Atherton Tablelands Chamber of Commerce (ATCC) were recently successful in receiving a grant from the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) Economic Development Fund to introduce a Shop Tablelands Gift Card. The Shop Tablelands Gift Card will be a plastic style EFTPOS card, that can be loaded with any value. The only difference with the new card is that it will be part of a closed-loop style program where the card can only be bought and redeemed at participating businesses within the TRC area. President of the ATCC, Bree Hargraves said the aim of the card is to provide a simple and effective model to keep money in the local economy while providing flexibility and choice to card recipients. “We recently received funding from the TRC to bring the Tablelands Gift Card to reality,” she said. “We also eventually hope to include Mareeba, but at this stage we will be concentrating on the Atherton Shire. “We will also be working with Malanda and Ravenshoe Chambers to ensure that their chamber members across the entire region are included in this opportunity. “We’re also inviting the Herberton and Yungaburra business associations to be involved.” Bree said that the idea came from seeing the success of a similar card in the Hinchinbrook Shire which was launched in November, so far putting approximately $27,000 back into the local community. “The good news is that the gift cards will be bought and then spent in local businesses instead of going to a multinational company,” she said. “By getting involved it helps support local jobs and businesses and keeps the money in the local economy. “Any business is able to participate, all they need to have is EFTPOS facilities and it will also be no cost to the store.” Businesses can register their expression of interest in participating by emailing info@athertonchamber. com.au

Locals rally against crime By Phil Brandel
NEARLY 200 local residents gathered at Arnold Park in Mareeba last Friday in the first of two rallies held across the region aimed at addressing the ongoing youth crime problem that is happening across Far North Queensland. Attendees got to hear from speakers from the Crime and Justice Action Group, Politicians and other concerned residents. Spokesperson for The Crime and Justice Action Group, Aaron McLeod said that it was great that so many people showed up, listened, and got to be heard. “We are happy with the turn out and I’m having fun chatting with everybody,” he said. “Today we are proving a platform for people to voice their concerns and bring up some ideas and for the community to come together for the common good. “The ultimate goal is that we need to bring about reform, through youth justice, we need to bring about a structural change about the way youth crime is handled. Mr McLeod claimed that youth crime, property crime and personal crime are all trending up and that the government does not know how to deal with it. “If I could change anything overnight, it would be to create an accessory to offence charge in legislation. Which would mean that we would target the institution that is meant to be responsible for the children, parents and guardians,” he said.
“We are not targeting the kids but saying to the parents, it’s your responsibility. “We want that provision put into legislation straight away.” Indigenous Australian Joanne Boyd said that the current way of addressing youth crime was not working. “We don’t want to keep on depending on the government, we want to fundraise for recreational equipment for the kids,” she said. “A lot of youth crime comes down to boredom, there’s nothing for them to do and there’s minimal public transport.” Ms Boyd said that throwing money at the problem was not going to solve anything. “We keep seeing parents and kids in trouble and we keep pouring in money,” she said. “If it was me personally, if I was putting money into something that wasn’t working, there is no way I would keep putting more in. “If the kids are still getting into trouble where is all the money going, nobody asks where is all the money is going? Ms Boyd said intervention programs needed to be rolled out in primary schools. “There’s nothing in primary schools to catch the kids,” she said. “The PCYC can’t get any funding for 13’s and over and by then it’s too late. “They have it back to front. They only get intensive support when they enter the justice system. That is not the time to catch the kids, by then it is too late.”

Locals turned out to voice their concerns at crime rallies held across the region last week.
“They needed help before they entered the justice system.” Mareeba Mayor Angela Toppin said the recent criminal activity was causing angst within the community. “We share the concerns of residents and business owners regarding the recent increase in crime and antisocial behaviour,” Cr Toppin said. “The number of thefts, breakins and acts of vandalism is simply unacceptable. “While these issues fall outside Council’s powers, we are certainly advocating on behalf of the community. Cr Toppin said she was in regular contact with multiple organisations and State agencies, including the Queensland Police and the local Member Cynthia Lui, to tackle the issue.
“This week I have met with the local Acting Police Inspector and I took the opportunity to meet with Ms Lui at her mobile office in Mareeba,” Cr Toppin said. “I will continue to be in regular contact with the local Member and I am hopeful that she can coordinate the multiple agencies and organisations to work together and bring about positive change in our community.” On Saturday January 6, the second anti-crime rally took place at Railway Lane in Atherton with about 100 residents turning up to have their say about the increase in local crime. While Cook MP Cynthia Lui and Kennedy MP Bob Katter sent their apologies, Hill MP Shane Knuth attended both rallies and said It was frustrating to

see the same criminals hijacking cars, stealing purses, and breaking and entering into homes and business”. “Many of these offenders are already out on bail for similar or other offences,” he said. “Obviously, what is in place now is not working. Enough is enough.” Mr Knuth said he will be strongly advocating for the KAP Relocation Sentencing Policy which aims to banish repeat offenders from our communities to remote locations and put them to work to learn skills to break the crime cycle. “The recent incidents of crime are unacceptable, and must be addressed to make our communities safer,” Mr Knuth said. Tablelands Regional Council
councillor Bernie Wilce said the impacts of recent juvenile-led crime had rocked the communities’ sense of safety. “We will be working closely with our State and Federal members to look at a reform of the Juvenile Justice Act as harsher penalties are required to stem these types of activities,” Cr Wilce said. “This includes the criteria used by magistrates and watch housekeepers when considering granting bail to repeat offenders, juvenile or adult. It is beyond belief that a young person from our community has allegedly stolen four cars in a 24-hour period and had been arrested twice in ten days. “Something has to change to deter youth crime.”

Katter calls for immediate removal of crocs
Peter McCullagh
Kennedy MP Bob Katter has once more called for the controlled and immediate removal of crocodiles from all populated areas in Queensland. Mr Katter said he was sick and tired of the Queensland Government’s handling of crocodiles. “They tell us it’s the crocodiles’ territory,” he said. “The crocodile population is growing, the current management strategy is just not working, and we have to get our priorities in order. “Lake Placid has never belonged to the crocodiles. If they knew anything about the ecological history of Australia,
they would know the First Australians got a significant part of their diet from crocodile meat and eggs. Lake Placid was never a crocodile habitat,” stated Mr Katter. Last week a 56 year-old Cairns local man was attacked whilst swimming at a popular cairns swimming spot. Mr Mark Ridge had taken a lunchtime swim in Lake Placid when he was attacked and grabbed around his head by what he thought to be a 2 metre plus crocodile. After managing to free himself from the croc’s vice like grip he swam for shore and paramedics were called. In January 2020 the Queensland Government Department

This sighting was made by members of the public and later confirmed by DES Wildlife officers. Since the attack a further warning has been issued by the Department and further investigations launched. A Department of Environment and Science spokesperson stated, “On January 28, following reports of a swimmer being bitten by a crocodile in Lake Placid, DES wildlife officers began a search of the area. “Under the Queensland Crocodile Management Plan, Lake Placid is within Zone B (Active Removal Zone). This means that any crocodile confirmed to be present is targeted for removal by DES and its contractors. “All crocodiles that pose a threat to human safety are targeted for removal under the

Bob Katter says he is sick of dealing with “half-witted, Lilypad Lefties, with stars in their eyes and marijuana in their head and lungs,” “You’d have to have no

project is moving forward as a joint initiative between William Pham from Melbourne and local businessman James Rattray and Stephen Till. Mr Pham said he chose Wondecla because he already has a herb farm there. “I fell in love with the region around the same time as red claw was introduced to me and we did some research and discovered it’s a great product that is lacking in commercial volumes,” he said. “Coming from an agricultural and hydroponic background it was the next step in our business. “To start with we will be promoting and selling locally, but we have lots of contacts across Australia with our herb business. “When we scale up, we will be targeting the Australian market and once we start hitting those big production numbers
the end goal is to export globally.” While red claw will be the main business Mr Pham said that they are hoping to be able to supply locals with turnkey aquaculture farms, so they can process larger numbers and combine together in packing sheds and export markets. “We want to get it to a point where we can then sell our model of producing, growing, packing, distribution and marketing,” he said. “Anyone who is interested will be able to chat with us and we can supply a solution and model that is ready to go. “We need more people growing red claw, our aim is to build a local red claw industry.” Mr Pham said while their goal was to start small, eventually they are looking at putting in 40 ponds with about 10,000 animals in each pond. “To finish building will take
close to two years, but we want to finish a few dams this year and ideally we could start selling in about 12 months,” he said. “We will start with a few dams and gradually scale up from there.” During the building stage there will be about 10 - 15 tradespeople required to build the site and then the facility will require about 5 people to keep it running. “Initially the red claw will end up in restaurants with a little in retail, we want to get this into the best restaurants in Australia who we currently supply with our herbs,” Mr Pham said. “Our aim is to build an industry of growing the product locally and then selling it around the world.” “We are going to be on a very steep learning over the next few months.”

by phil brandel Member for Cook, Cynthia Lui held her first mobile office for 2021 last week. The visit turned out to be an angry affair with several constituents voicing their opinion on the crime situation plaguing the Mareeba Shire in recent weeks. Ms Lui runs regular mobile office meetings at the front of the Mareeba IGA as a way of meeting with local residents who can’t get to see her in Cairns. One of the people who lined up to see Ms Lui was Bill Cohen who orgainsed last weeks anti-crime rallies in Mareeba and Atherton. During the meeting Mr Cohen presented Ms Lui with an invitation to the rally, an event that she said she would not be able attend as she had prior meetings elsewhere. Mr Cohn said that local

residents were getting sick of crime in the area. “You have 14-year-olds running around in stolen cars,” he said. “We have kids breaking into elderly ladies’ homes and stalking them. “The whole purpose of the rally is to say that enough is enough and we want something done.” During the conversation Mr Cohen also took aim and another Labor politician. “I can’t believe that Michael Healy said crime is down, that’s crap,” he said. “People are getting brand new cars stolen off them and they are being trashed. “This is a problem in your electorate, and this is an electorate issue, this is not the Mayors issue. How are you going to address the issue if we are not all in the one place at the one time?” Ms Lui responded with “If you think showing my face at a

Multi-million dollar college centre opened By Rhys Thomas
After being constructed more than a year ago, St Stephen’s Catholic College (SSCC) was able to officially open their new Holy Spirit Centre last Thursday with a special parade and blessing ceremony. Due to the centre being finished in the midst of last year’s COVID lockdown the opening ceremony had to be postponed until restrictions were lifted. The new centre features a sporting hall with pull out grandstands for parades, an auditorium, commercial kitchen, staff offices and an impressive foyer with display cabinets. The $7 million project drew elements from other school halls
across Queensland in its construction to ensure that SSCC was building a top-quality facility for its students and staff. SSCC Business Manager Hayden Flynn visited many schools throughout Queensland to inspect school halls in preparation for the construction of The Holy Spirit Centre. “We have incorporated the best elements of existing multipurpose centres to create an impressive space with functionality and purpose,” he said. “It certainly is an exciting time for the St Stephen’s community, it is all geared to enhancing student experience to create an environment for quality teaching and learning.” The Holy Spirit Centre was

who have been able to position us in such a way as to undertake this huge project.” The Holy Spirit Centre was the last project on SSCC’s first Masterplan that was designed in 2005. SSCC is now working on their second approved Master-

The Great Wheelbarrow Race will go ahead in 2021 in a different one-day race from Dimbulah to Chillagoe. PHOTO: Supplied.
Get set for a new race challenge in 2021 Preparations are in full swing to keep the spirit of the Great Wheelbarrow Race alive. In light of COVID restrictions, the Great Wheelbarrow Race committee will host a one-day “COVID Challenge” on Saturday, May 15, 2021. The ironman style event will see competitors tackle a 95k challenge along the wheelbarrow way from Dimbulah to Chillagoe. Committee Chair, Mareeba Shire Councillor Locky Bensted said teams could pull up stumps at Almaden if they choose and solo and duo competitors can join the race from Almaden. “It will be different, but myself and the committee are really looking forward to it,” he said. The event will start in Dimbulah early on Saturday morning and finish the same afternoon in Chillagoe. Competitors who choose to push on through Almaden to Chillagoe will need to meet a time deadline to ensure everyone arrives safely in Chillagoe
on Saturday afternoon. Councillor Bensted said the committee and Councillors saw this alternative event as a welcome social and economic boost for the smaller communities. “While COVID restrictions have prevented us from running the annual event as normal, the committee and Council wanted to find a way to keep the spirit of the race alive,” Cr Bensted said. “After such an abnormally quiet year in terms of events, I am really encouraging everyone to get involved and support the event and local communities. “Preparations are well underway and we are encouraging everyone to start training and organising their teams.” The committee is working through the logistics of the event. Competitors are encouraged to follow the event's Facebook page to keep up-to-date. Registrations will open soon.

Extra special Valentine’s Day for HeartKids HEARTKID: The Madrid family – Victor, Monica, Remi and Tylee with happy and healthy Heartkid, Rafael.
BY PHIL BRANDEL
February 14 is more than just Valentine’s Day for some families. February 14 is also ‘HeartKids Sweetheart Day’, a national event held each year to raise awareness of congenital heart disease (CHD), which af-
fects eight babies born in Australia everyday. The complex condition with no known cure is one of the leading causes of infant death in Australia. For one local family, this Valentine’s Day will be extra special. In May of 2020, Mareeba’s Rafael Madrid was born at the
Mater Mothers’ Hospital in Brisbane in the middle of the COVID lockdowns and mum Monica Madrid said HeartKids helped when her family could not be with her. “When I had my 20-week scan, they detected a congenital heart defect called ‘Transposition of the Great Arteries’

(TGA),” she said. “They told me I would need to relocate from Mareeba to Brisbane for the birth. “Rafael underwent a balloon septostomy intervention at birth and then an arterial switch operation when he was only eight days old. “I got to hold him for 10 seconds before they whisked him away.” Monica said that when you have a HeartKid they earn what a called Heart Beads which is anytime a child has a procedure, operation, or a challenge that child earns a bead. “While in hospital HeartKids do a great job, they provide freezer meals, they fund and stock the parents lounge,” she said. They can also come visit and offer assistance and once we got home HeartKids would ring regularly to see how everything was going and to see if there’s
anything they could do to help.” Monica said Rafael is now doing well. “We do have to keep an eye on him, but he is growing in leaps and bounds and is on track with his developmental milestones.” This Sweetheart Day, everyone is encouraged to purchase a $5 Heart Beads bracelet to help support families impacted by CHD. The bracelets symbolise the beads that many of the HeartKids receive during their hospital stays. Despite being a serious lifethreatening condition, over 65,000 Australian babies, children and adults currently live with CHD, facing unique challenges for the rest of their lives, including repeated heart surgeries and ongoing medical treatment. With a further 3,000 babies expected to be born with CHD in 2021, HeartKids is Australia’s
only national charity dedicated to supporting those impacted those families impacted by CHD. Newly appointed HeartKids CEO, Fiona Ellis, said HeartKids has been the voice of Australian children with heart disease and their families for almost 40 years. “As demand for CHD support services grows, HeartKids is hoping to expand its services for families by continuing its 1800 Helpline, parent education programs, family financial assistance, and in-hospital support initiatives which includes its unique Heartbeads program,” she said. “HeartKids’ goal in 2021 is to increase access to its support services and programs across Australia, with a particular focus for those living in isolated communities.” To participate go to www. sweatheartday.org.au

Atherton State High School 2020 Dux recipient Xaante Thomas is excited to be moving forward and closer to realizing her dream
ASHS graduate secures 99.85 ATAR ranking Atherton State High School (ASHS) graduate and 2020 Dux recipient Xaante Thomas has successfully scored a monster 99.85 ATAR score, just .1 off the highest possible attainable score of 99.95. Miss Thomas attended ASHS and was apart of the 2020 graduating class where she participated in the end of year exams to determine her Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). On top of being acknowledged as the 2020 Dux for ASHS she also claimed the title of highest ATAR ranking with her amazing 99.85. Miss Thomas did not expect
that she was going to get such a high ATAR ranking or be the recipient of the Dux for 2020. “I wasn’t expecting to get that high of a score it was very much a surprise,” she said. “I did a lot of questions from a variety of textbooks and mock exams that the school provided for us. “There was a lot of studying in my own time to get prepared for the ATAR exams. “I wasn’t particularly aiming for the Dux, so it was a bit of a surprise to get it.” Now Miss Thomas will be using her talents to help others after being accepted into James
Cook Universities Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery where she will start in 2022. “It’s (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) something I’ve wanted to do for a very long time,” she said. “I’ve wanted to do it for most of my time in high school. “I’ve always been very interested in doing a lot of rural and remote work particularly with pregnant women and children.” Now after attaining her impressive ATAR ranking and Dux honor Miss Thomas is excited that she is finally on the journey to realizing her dream.
2020 Mareeba High Dux announced Mareeba State High School recognized their brightest star of 2020 after awarding the 2020 Dux at their recent parade last Tuesday. Liam Newlands graduated in one of the hardest years for students in recent memory, for his excellent scores at school and during his external ATAR exams he was awarded the honor of Dux. He studied under the new ATAR system which stands for Australian Tertiary Admission Rank and it differs from the old Overall Position (OP) system. Liam performed well during his ATAR exams earning him an ATAR ranking of 99.6, one of the highest rankings possible in the ATAR system and equivalent to an OP 1. Liam will be leaving for Brisbane this Saturday, February 13 to study a Bachelor of Engineering Honors and a Bachelor of Science at the University of Queensland. “I didn’t really know what I was going to do and then I just

Work program shaping young lives BY PHIL BRANDEL
Mareeba State High School alumni Nicholas Duncan, Rhianna Jerome and Farah Terzi have all been accepted into tertiary studies or trades after leaving schools.
Graduates celebrate success By Ellie Fink After a year of hard work, some of Mareeba State High School’s (MSHS) 2020 graduates have earnt places in university courses and workplaces. MSHS had a small ceremony on Tuesday, February 2 which welcomed the graduates back and recognised their achievements after finishing school. Farah Terzi, Nicholas Duncan and Rhianna Jerome were among the students who were successfully accepted into their courses or offered trades. Miss Terzi says that she didn’t know what she wanted to do after grade 12, but her interest in house design led her to study architecture. “I’ve always been interested in building houses and designing,” she said “I studied graphics up until grade 10 but it (architecture) was something I didn’t think I wanted to do until the end of
grade 12.” Mr Duncan on the other hand was influenced by his job at TGT and his infatuation with how things work, this has led him to study a Bachelor of Engineering at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). “I have always been interested in how things worked so engineering was a good option,” he said. Miss Jerome did not pursue a university course like a large amount of her peers and instead was offered a barbering apprenticeship at ‘Brushed Hair Gallery’ in Mareeba. “I am doing a Certificate III in Barbering at TAFE Cairns,” she said. “I got the apprenticeship and thought why not do something different.” These graduates will join other like-minded people as they pursue their passions and careers.
With last year’s school leavers looking for jobs, Mareeba PCYC announced the next dates for their Ready for Work Program. The program is for anyone under the age of 24 who needs help brushing up on their interview skills or is having trouble landing a job. The free two-week course will cover everything from how to write a resume, interview skills, job applications, how to get a tax file number and even how to dress for an interview. PCYC Mareeba Manager Mary-Anne West said the course is free for anyone aged between 15 to 24. “It’s only 2 weeks long and runs from 9am to 2pm Monday to Friday. It covers a wide range of topics including interview skills, dressing for an interview, working as part of team, money, tax file numbers, cover letters, research, applications and communication skills,” she said. “Its completely free and we include snacks and lunch.” Mary-Anne said interested people need to enroll by February 12 because the next course starts on the 15th. “This is great for anyone who just finished school as a lot of young people don’t have those interview or resume skills,” she said. “We also help people build their resume even if they don’t have work experience, they may have volunteering or relevant school experience. “Some people have a resume, but it may just need a bit of polishing.”
Raynor Elu at her marching out parade at HMAS Cairns and Mary-Anne West from the Mareeba PCYC.
“At the end they get three copies of their printed resume and a USB with their resume on it to take home.” Raynor Elu is one of the success stories from past ready to work programs. Ms Elu was first introduced to the PCYC Mareeba club in 2014 when she began attending the Pulse Café, the club’s weekly drop-in youth centre. In 2015, Ms Elu had to drop out of high school and move away from home, and soon experienced difficulties settling into a new life. “In 2017, I moved back to Mareeba. I then spent the next two years trying to find a job, but I had lost all motivation.”
“My partner and I both signed up for the 2-week course at PCYC Mareeba. We attended every day in the hope that it would lead to something, as we were both out of options.” After completing the Ready for Work course, Ms Elu completed her application to the Royal Australian Navy with support from PCYC Mareeba’s Youth Support Officers. In August 2019 Ms Elu flew to HMAS CERBERUS – Victoria to begin the five-month course and by December 2019 was one of the eighteen recruits to successfully graduate. “The graduation ceremony at HMAS Cairns was surreal,” said Ms Elu.
Since completing the Navy Indigenous Development Program, Ms Elu has been offered a four-year contract with the Royal Australian Navy. “Returning to PCYC Mareeba and participating in the Ready for Work program was one of the best decisions of my life. It taught me to be a better person and provided me with skills and knowledge I will use throughout the rest of my life.” “I am grateful for the program and the staff at the club for their support. They helped me find my dream career and it has completely changed my life.” For more details call the Mareeba PCYC on 4092 4231.

Aspiring dentist receives $10,000 scholarship Eliza Tolley, an Atherton State High School 2020 alumni has been the first recipient of the new Fresh St Market IGA University Scholarship, being awarded $10,000 to go towards her future studies. In her last year at ASHS, Miss Tolley decided to apply for the Fresh St Market IGA University Scholarship in the hope that it would help her along with her study of dentistry at JCU Cairns. The scholarship provides $10,000 over a span of three years to assist with both the setup and relocation costs of starting university. Miss Tolley was ecstatic to win as she did not think that she was going to be awarded the scholarship. “I realised that going into the
real world is a lot more expensive than I thought it would be,” she said. “I thought it would be really helpful to have the scholarship and then I can focus more of my time on studying. “The last two years I focused on moving into dentistry, I did work experience leading into university.” Fresh St Market IGA owner Mike Shakes was thrilled to give Eliza the news and said he was always looking at ways to support the local community. “We’re so grateful of our community and the support they give to our business,” he said. “We are always looking at ways to give back. “Our aim is that this money will help take some financial
pressure away during the first years of university to allow the student to focus on their studies.” The scholarship was born out of talks between Mr Shakes and ASHS P&C President Dr. Andrew Dennis. “This scholarship will make such a difference to university bound students and their families,” Dr Dennis said. “We are incredibly grateful that Fresh St Market IGA is so supportive of our community.” The scholarship will continue to support another five students over the next six years and give them a helping hand to get into their university journey. After finishing her studies at JCU Miss Tolley aspires to return to the Tablelands and open her own Dentist Clinic.

Hungry Pug fills tummy’s and minds at school Mrs Crosby asked customers what should be done with their monthly tips. “Every month we have our community tip jar that we spend on community organisations,” she said. “One of our customers suggested doing a stationery drive for kids who don’t have the supplies. “We contributed about $300 and the customers through the tip jar donated about $1000.” Families in Mareeba were able to drop off school supplies to the store or contribute tips, which all went towards to the drive. The Hungry Pug had previously been involved with Mareeba Primary School by proCOMMUNITY: Teachers and students at Mareeba State Primary School with the emergency lunches that are being provided by The Hungry Pug in Mareeba.
BY ELLIE FINK Thanks to the generosity of the Mareeba community, a local café has been able to supply Mareeba State Primary School
with emergency lunches for the entire school year. With the new school year back in full swing, owners of the The Hungry Pug in Mareeba, Simon and Victoria Crosby
dedicated themselves to providing lunch every day for students as well as donating stationery supplies. The idea came about with a simple Facebook post where
viding sandwiches and wraps to the school's emergency lunch program. The program started as a part of the school’s student welfare hub where students can be provided with lunch by the school when they need it most. “We had been providing lunches previously and we thought, what can we do to make a really big impact in the new year,” Mrs Crosby said. “We thought, let's set ourselves a challenge, bite the bullet, and provide lunch every day for about 20 kids for the whole year.” The lunches are made fresh every morning and picked up by the school around 7:30am and provided to students in the
case of an emergency. MSS Acting Principal Hannah Simpson expressed her gratitude for these donations as students begin to utilise them. “We are very lucky to have these donations from the Hungry Pug and such thoughtful families that have made a huge difference in our student’s learning,” she said. “The emergency lunches began last Wednesday and we sent out stationery packs to students on Friday January 22 who need it most.” MSS students can be provided with emergency lunches and stationery supplies from their student wellbeing hub if they are ever in need.

FlexiChoice goes solar In 2020 FlexiChoice was successful in obtaining funds to install a grid connect solar system on the roof of their premises located at Mason Street, Mareeba. The installation of this system is to promote preparedness, resilience and ensure business continuity in the event of any future disasters. FlexiChoice is a not for profit organisation and has been delivering disability support services across the North Western Tableland and Mareeba region for 17 years.
A suspicious ‘meteorite’ crash landed at Malanda State School (MSS) last week gathering world-wide attention and even a phone call from NASA. The ‘meteorite’ crash was covered by a group of young students called the Moolanda News Team as a part of their creative writing exercises.
Since the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) there has been a dramatic increase of service users utilising FlexiChoice’s activity base which in turn has seen a high rise in our power consumption. We would like to acknowledge and recognise that this initiative would not have been possible without the Category C FNQ NQ Monsoon Trough Flexible Funding Grant program which is jointly funded un-
der the Commonwealth/ State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements 2018. This program allowed us to support local business and therefore we were able to engage Outback Solar and Outdoors (who is a Clean Energy Council Accredited Installer) to provide the product and installation. Cameron and the team at Outback Solar delivered high quality standards throughout the duration of the process and we would like to thank them for their professional and reliable services.
Since the installation of the system in September 2020, our electricity bill has reduced by approximately $300 per month. FlexiChoice is grateful to be given the opportunity to be included in various initiatives made by Australian and Queensland Governments. Although funding for this product has been provided by both the Australian and Queensland Governments, the material contained herein does not necessarily represent the views of either Government.

Secretary for the Atherton Men’s Shed John Whyte hopes that once word gets out about this program other Men’s Shed’s across the county will follow suit. “We’ve had 25 men jump on board to do this program just to improve their general health,” he said. “The program is tailored to each person, it won’t be one size fits all. “If this program works well other men’s shed’s around Australia may pick up on a similar model.” TRC Councilor Bernie Wilce is excited for this program to launch and give men a chance to take their health into their own hands. “As a councilor one of my bigger pet peeves is to see good health within the community whether that be mental health, physical health or a combination of both,” he said. “We have to look at housing, health, medical facilities, a lot of stuff and this is a fantastic start. “If we can get the aging male population to appreciate their own health and wellbeing that’s going to go a long way.” The 16-week program officially launches today (Wednesday, February 10) and will be held at the Prior’s Creek exercise park off Vernon Street, Atherton. HEALTH: Atherton Men’s Shed committee member Tom Murray and FNQ Health and Fitness Exercise Physiologist Carla Barletta are looking forward to the 16-week program.
Keeping abreast of art LOCAL artist Gina Jones has tapped into a niche market of parents looking for DNA keepsakes by painting portraits from breastmilk. What started out as just portrait painting, in March last year Gina started experimenting with incorporating breastmilk into her paintings. Gina said she experimented with a few different methods and testing while she was breastfeeding her own child. “The paintings are sealed to stop mould and any smell,” she said. “It was a light bulb moment because I was doing the portrait paintings and I had seen people making breastmilk keepsakes. “A lot of people are sur-
prised because nobody has heard of it or done it before. “A few of my friends said you should post on Facebook and now it has taken off.” Gina said the subjects donated their own breastmilk and most portraits were usually of the mother with her baby. “I have been doing some promotion through the Australian breastfeeding association and 10 percent from the purchase price goes back to the charity,” she said. “It’s my way of giving back. “My passion for art was started as a hobby, but as time passed, it’s turned out to be a great business.”

WHO will be your Valentine? Valentine’s Day – that special time of the year has come around again where we take a moment to truly appreciate our significant others. For many, it’s buying roses and chocolates, special gifts, cheeky love letters signed as ‘your secret admirer’, dinner dates or celebrating your relationship. But first, you must ask your significant other the most important question of the month ‘Will you be my Valentine?’ If their answer is yes, you have then committed yourself to spoiling and treating them a little bit more than usual. Spoiling your significant other can be as simple as a red rose from the local florist, or as big as a fancy dinner at your favourite restaurant. But there is one thing that will always stay the same, the love and affection between two people.
So this Sunday, remember to cherish your partner or your to be partner, love them
a little more and remember why you chose them to be your Valentine.

ON LAND the
Bouyant start for far northern cattle market by sally turley
A record breaking pen of store heifers, nearly twice the usual number of cattle on offer and a large gallery of spectators boosted Mareeba's first livestock sale of 2021 to a very positive start on Tuesday, February 2. Buyers came from as far
south as Roma to see what the north had to offer and vendors were pleased with results across the board. The total yarding of 190 head of mixed quality cattle sold to an average of 363.87 c/kg and returned $1,059.39 per head. Greg and Carol Ryan of Green Hills Station Georgetown
set a new saleyard record of 438.2c/kg, achieving $595.95/ hd for their pen of 136kg brahman weaner heifers. The heifer's paddock mates, a pen of 132kg store steers also topped their section selling to a Roma producer for 456.2c/kg. Mr and Mrs Ryan were suprised to achieve such outstanding results. They had a few old herd bulls they wanted to send and drafted out some weaners they had on hand to fill the truck. Typically, the Green Hills steers were sold at 360 to 380kg into the live export market and providing they have a decent season, Mr Ryan doesn't expect that to change this year. He believed the market was starting to test buyers capacity to pay for cattle and still make a profit out the other end. He said Green Hills was having an unusual season so far. They had good early rain of around 340mm around Christmas, but then it just stopped until they got under a welcome 66mm on Wednesday night. In other categories, light bulls up to 200kg sold to a top

Prematurely cut short by lockdown restrictions in its maiden 2020 season, To Kill A Cassowary is back in 2021 from March 5 to13 and destined to delight audiences. JUTE Theatre Company’s Artistic Director and CEO, Suellen Maunder said calling a halt to last year’s season of To Kill A Cassowary after just two sell-out shows was heartbreaking. “Like everyone else, the future was uncertain, and we had no choice but comply with regulations. It was hard for audiences and equally, our cast and crew who had been so invested in the delivery of this wonderful production,” she said. “To Kill A Cassowary was very much ‘unfinished business’ and here we are a year down the track with the great
fortune of being able to pick up where we left off. “JUTE’s culture and resilience has never been more evident, and I could not think of a more perfect way to celebrate the start of our 30th year of operation than with a remount of To Kill a Cassowary.” Written by Mission Beach local and JUTE’s Write Sparks alumnus, Laurie Trott, To Kill A Cassowary is a story about place, family inheritance and the interwoven issues of this small, tropical rainforest community. According to Laurie, To Kill A Cassowary applies a good deal of warmth and wit to highlight its more serious themes of legacy, ageism, and environmental heritage. “This is an engaging and entertaining play of our times
and one that focusses predominantly on relationships – relationships not just between people but the land and sea on which we live,” Ms Trott said. “For me, writing To Kill a Cassowary was as much about creativity as communication and using the stage to promote public awareness about the urgent need to preserve and conserve the Cassowary Coast. “Where possible I have included reference to some of the many threats to biodiversity including introduced species, habitat modification and loss, unsustainable development, tourism and climate change.” From a ramshackle veranda in the rainforest To Kill a Cassowary directed by the award-winning Bridget
Show back on stage in 2021 Doyle, is a colourful story about an ageing conservationist father, Amos (played by Steven Tandy) and his pro-development daughter, Paula (played by Natalie Taylor) who are ready to do battle over a patch of paradise found, also known as the Cassowary Coast. Throwing a spanner in the works is neighbour, Josie (played by
YUNGABURRA
Paula Nazarski) and a rich natural setting abounding in flora and fauna - and the elusive cassowary. Director, Bridget Boyle is supported by a stellar cast of three; Steven Tandy (of The Sullivan’s fame); Natalie Taylor who people will remember from Here We All Are. Assembled and Paula Nazarski, new to the JUTE stage
along with an award-winning creative team who will transform the stage of Bulmba-ja Arts Centre into a verdant rainforest. Tickets for To Kill A Cassowary at Bulmba-ja for the season, 5-13 March 2021 can be purchased from jute. com.au, Eventbrite.com or call 4281 6832.

OPINION
With Phil Brandel @Philbrandel1
Email: editorial@theexpressnewspaper.com.au
Silence is not golden Last week residents sick of inaction by successive state governments over the crime situation in Far North Queensland decided to rally together in peaceful protests in Mareeba and Atherton. Politicians from all side and levels of the political spectrum were in attendance to hear from locals who are sick and tired of youth violence, graffiti, break ins, and car jackings. One notable absence at the Mareeba rally was The Member for Cook, Ms Cynthia Lui who told the The Express she could not make it to the community orgainsed rally. “I’m unable to make it as I have other meetings on,” she said. “This issue is important to me. If you think that me showing my face at a rally is going to make all the difference, it’s not. “It’s all the work that needs to be done to make sure youth crime is addressed and we need to look at this from a holistic perspective.” I would love to know what meetings Ms Lui had that were more important than her constituent’s safety and ability to live peacefully? Last year the Member for Cook held a couple of round table meetings addressing the crime situation in the shire. The meetings came to naught as the crime problem continues to escalate. Another telling sign of Ms Lui’s contempt for the Mareeba Shire is that Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Angela Toppin must line up to speak with the local member at the local IGA when she has one of her mobile visits. Why does the lo-
LETTERS to the EDITOR
cal member not make an appointment to see the Mayor. Rather she makes the Mayor line up and wait in the local shopping centre. Not a great use of the Mayor’s time. At the 2020 state election Ms Lui lost the polling booths of Biboohra, Chillagoe, Daintree, Julatten, Mount Molloy and the two booths in Mareeba. If the Mareeba Shire were its own separate seat, Ms Lui would have lost it badly. Where Cynthia got across the line was pretty much everything north of Cooktown. Ms Lui now knows she does not need Mareeba or any of the surrounding towns to win and hold on to the seat of Cook. Mareeba constituents can now be safely ignored and she can safely hang onto her base salary of $159,122, plus whatever else she earns for being on various committees. Ms Lui’s promise to the people of Mareeba at the last local election for a water park, was an answer to a question that nobody asked. The silence has also been deafening from the local member about The Barron River Bridge, a new route from Mareeba to Cairns, Dialysis machines and the Mareeba Bypass. They all just seem too hard for the local member. Let’s just hope for our sake and the sake of her career Ms Lui changes gear and steps up, because as Enoch Powell once said, “All political lives, end in failure.”
ANZAC Day commemorations I would like to take the opportunity to enlighten Mr Phil Brandel on the reasons why nobody ever says that "it happened a long time ago, we weren't alive, get over it" when referring to ANZAC Day commemorations. The first reason is that those who made the ultimate sacrifice number not in the hundreds or thousands but tens of thousands, I would invite Mr Brandel to visit the cemeteries in places such as; France, Belgium, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Malaysia or the Middle East as well as the Cenotaphs in every town and city in Australia, their names are recorded in the cold hard stone. The second point I would like to raise for the benefit of Mr Brandel is that it wasn't "a long time ago", should he ever manage to closely observe those who march on ANZAC Day look at the left side on their chest and take note of the ago of those particular people marching, they are the ones who were awarded medals, not given, yes some are barely out of their teens. The last point is pretty simple, the Wars and Conflicts Australia has been involved in have included ALL Australians regardless of; heritage, skin colour, religion or culture. To conclude, while ANZAC Day commemorates "some Aussie's who were killed by Turks or Germans" Australian as people do not go around giving; Turks, Germans or even Japanese a hard time about something their forefathers were more than likely not involved in, so should anybody have an issue with the 26th of January, I trust they can do what many do on the 25th of April, stay at home and enjoy the day off. James Gowan Mareeba
Great editorial piece We just want to say Congrats to Phil Brandel on the editorial “Goodbye Australia
Day.” We want to share it with friends and relatives. Luckily, your paper is not published by New Ltd. You would be hung, drawn and quartered. Robyn and Roy Murray-Prior Yungaburra
Member for Cook – missing in action There are three major issues right now in the Mareeba Shire Local Government gazetted area that require immediate input and same communicated to our 22,000 residents by the elected state government Member for Cook - Cynthia Lui. The three major issues are:• Barron River Bridge at Kuranda - what are the immediate structural issues and what are the planned rectifications and time frames associated with same? • Crime rate in Mareeba is escalating due mainly to juveniles - the community is rightly concerned as the consequences within our legal system for these escalating crimes in no way represent the damage costs and trauma caused to those community members who are the recipients of the on going juvenile crime incidents in Mareeba - the Mareeba community is awaiting a reply to these crimes by our elected Member for Cook? • A recent major accident in Byrne Street Mareeba causing serious bodily injuries to a mother and son once again raises deep concerns as to the plan put in place some 50 years ago by the then Main Roads Department and no doubt supported by the State Government of the day to construct a “ Heavy Vehicle Alternative Route” to the west of Mareeba to minimise heavy vehicles traversing our central business area - I am of the belief Member for Cook - Cynthia Lui supported this alternative route in her policy statement prior to the recent election - to date there has been no comment from the Member for Cook? A detailed response to the
HAVE YOUR SAY
above issues by the Member for Cook is warranted and no doubt a requirement as our elected state government member of the Queensland State Government. Denis McKinley Mareeba
It’s time for the Member for Cook to step up I would like to respond to the comments made by Ms Lui in The Express after her Mobile Meeting at IGA in Mareeba on Friday, February 5. A: “If you think showing my face at a rally is going to make a difference, it’s not.” 1. Wrong: Showing your face will go some way towards demonstrating to the people of Mareeba that you are one with them on this issue, and share their genuine concerns. 2. Attendance will also show the people of Mareeba they have not been abandoned. B: “We need to look at this from a holistic perspective, we need to look at the home environment and we need to talk to all of the departments working with the kids to address this issue.” 1. This is not a new problem. It has been going on for a number of years while you have been in office. You should already have had all the talks with the relevant departments. It’s past time for talk and is now time for action. 2. It’s your government who has weakened the Juvenile Justice System. Time to fix that. C: “It’s a community concern and I’ve had a number of inquiries through my office and I’m working through it and I’m talking to everyone I need to talk to.” 1. Your office is in Cairns. Many people in Mareeba cannot go to Cairns for meetings with you. Having a Mobile Office here every so often is an insult and demonstrates that to you, Mareeba, (the largest centre in your electorate), is only a “second thought” area. Peter Beatts MAREEBA
We need to be one people Australia While I do not endorse any actions of English settlement of 233 years ago it is not a fair representation to look at 1788 through the standards of 2021. It was a different time with different values and standards. History is what it is and cannot be changed but we can learn from previous mistakes in the hope of not repeating them. There are good things as well as bad about January 26. On January 26 1949, the date of the proclamation of the National and Citizenship Act 1948. This was the first day all Australians including descendants of First Australians, became Australian Citizens. When you change one of your own parents you do not exist as a different union produces a different baby and you do not exist. We are all here because we have the ancestors we do and the history they lived through. There will be no fixing the past as it is what it is, history. There will be no progression from where we are until people of Aboriginal decent forgive people of all other decent for being here. Likewise, other Australians have to forgive any reprisal killing made against their ancestors. Forgiveness is not about endorsement of past wrongs, it’s about freeing ourselves of hate and resentment from what others have done to you and your family, past and present. We need to be one people to be Australian no matter when we arrived in Australia, be it 50,000 or 200 years or last year and no mater our colour or creed. This comes from forgiveness, trust and personal effort that transfers to community effort. W.R. Holme, Bentley Park

Atherton bowl out Barron in big win Seppe Barletta opens the bowling for Atherton at Loder Park on Saturday.
Atherton's bowlers all did their job at Atherton’s Loder Park on Saturday, to bowl Barron out for a defendable 108 in the 45th over after Barron elected to bat first. Luke Parnell started proceedings with a caught-and-bowled in his first over, going on to pick up 3-35 off his 10. Tom Boorman tore through the middle order with his economical offies taking 4-8 off 10 which included a hat-trick opportunity. Dan Parnell's leggies snared him 2-24 and Paul Nasser returned a very tidy 1-13 off 10. In reply, Dan Parnell got the chase off to a good start once again, hitting 34 runs off 36 balls, caught with the score on 50 in the ninth over. Barron fought back with their bowlers having the upper hand as Atherton's batsmen struggled to get starts. Brendan
and Will Nasser formed a 38 run partnership taking the score to 99 and Pete Sceresini hit the winning runs in the 24th over. While managing to claim a 3 wicket win and pick up valuable bonus points, Atherton will be looking to improve on recent batting performances leading in to finals with only two rounds left in the Cricket Far North first grade competition. Dan Parnell will lead the Thunder team in Friday night's Barrier Reef Big Bash game at Griffiths Park, going up against teammates Tom Boorman, Seppe Barletta and Will Nasser. Atherton's Paul Nasser, Pete Sceresini, Luke Parnell, Logan Poggioli and Michael Raso will also line up for the Thunder. Atherton's next Cricket Far North match is away this Saturday February 13, at Griffiths Park in Cairns against Norths.
Finals hopes slipping Both Mareeba seconds and thirds were rained out over the weekend with finals hopes slowly slipping out of seconds grasp. Thirds game against Port Douglas on Saturday was called off before they even took the field gifting each
