lEADING THE WAY We are fortunate to have women in leadership across our great region. They are active and significant roles models for generations to come and continue to make a difference to our communities. With International Women’s Day to be celebrated on Monday, March 8, it’s timely to recognise the tremendous efforts by women and the roles they play in shaping our future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. International Women’s Day has been observed since the early 1900’s. The global day celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women’s achievements or rally for women’s equality. Since the first International Women’s Day, we have strived to end inequality against our sisters, mothers, cousins, daughters and every other female in our lives. From the moment women marched in suffrage, we have watched some of our most powerful females rise and take on the responsibilities needed to take on the new world. Now 113 years on we encourage women everywhere to take the leap into power and create something amazing in their local community. To celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day, The Express spoke to Mareeba Shire Council’s first female Mayor, Angela Toppin about leadership and what inspired her to become the influential woman she is today.

Friends of baby Violet, who was diagnosed with a bleeding brain tumour last week and flown to Brisbane, are helping to raise funds to support the family with Violet’s recovery.
BABY Violet Sherman was just 11 weeks old when she suffered a bleeding brain tumour and was flown to Brisbane for life saving treatment on Sunday, February 21. Violet’s Parents, Dave and Elizabeth Sherman, were in the middle of moving back to Mareeba to start new jobs when the emergency unfolded. Mareeba resident, Jayde Coyne said he had to do something after he found out that his future best man’s baby daughter was in trouble. “David and Liz just had a baby, and he was moving back to Mareeba to start working with me, after working down south for a while,” Jayde said. “On Sunday morning he got a phone call that his little girl was deteriorating quickly and that they had to fly her urgently from Cairns to Brisbane. “They didn’t even think she would make it through the flight.” Jayde said he is hoping to raise enough money to help fund the recovery for Violet and support the family during this tough time. “It will help them out financially until they can finish moving up here and start their jobs,” he said. “They were between homes and jobs while moving and then this happens, we are just hoping to give them a helping hand to get back on their feet. “As a new parent myself, I can’t imagine the pain that Dave and Elizabeth would be experiencing through such a tragic event. “There is nothing we can say to take the pain away, however, we hope that this fundraiser will help them on the road to recovery for Violet and her parents.” To donate go to www.gofund.me/62c59227

Search begins for new TRC CEO BY Phil Brandel
Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) is on the search for another CEO after current interim CEO, Bob Owen chose to resign, effective on Friday, February 26. Mr Owen was just eight months into a 14-month Interim CEO appointment, filling the chair after original TRC CEO Justin Commons resigned suddenly in May 2020. The vacancy has left the TRC scrambling, as they need to appoint an acting CEO to take the chair from Monday, before they can hire an interim CEO, who will then fill the position while the recruitment process takes place for a fulltime CEO. Mayor Rod Marti said that Council had made steady progress under Mr Owen. “We tried to hit a reset button early, adopting a balanced
budget and freezing the general rate,” Cr Marti said. “Bob has made it clear that he wanted to do something less stressful in his life and we wish him all the best and thank him for his contribution.” “Under Bob we’ve strengthened our local buy policy, we’ve tidied up our procurement more broadly. We have also been working on improving the customer service experience and making the organisation more accessible.” To fill the gap, at Thursday’s Council meeting the TRC resolved to appoint the General Manager Community and Corporate Services, Hilary Jackson as Acting CEO until an Interim CEO can be appointed. Ms Jackson will be the third CEO to oversee council since Rod Marti and the new council were elected in March 2020. “It will be great having Hillary on board, its fortunate

that we have someone well equipped and qualified to do the job,” Cr Marti said. “Hillary is highly professional, competent and calm, all the things you want as an acting CEO.” Mr Marti added that council would like to have an interim
CEO appointed within the next few weeks. “As for a full time CEO, it would be nice if we could hire the fulltime CEO before we adopt the 21/22 budget in June, but that could be a bit ambitious.” Mayor Rod Marti said that
recruiting a CEO would take some time, but Council did see the transition as an opportunity to refresh and continue the reform process. “Council will be seeking a leader who understands the challenges of rural local government, who has the desired
competencies and who is strategically aligned with Council,” he said. “Local government is a tough gig, but we live in a great region, so we expect we’ll get some well-qualified leaders apply.”

KAP launch Bridle Track petition
KENNEDY MP Bob Katter and Hill MP Shane Knuth have joined together to launch a petition with the aim of fast tracking a new road linking up the Tablelands with Cairns, which they hope to present to the Queensland Parliament. Mr Katter said that bureaucratic delays have held up the improvement of the Barron River Bridge at Kuranda. He has also questioned why Transport and Main Roads (TMR) have left residents in the dark as to what is wrong with the bridge. TMR have said they are waiting on a report about the bridge, which they have claimed will not be released to the public as it is ‘to technical.
The Express asked TMR for an update on the bridge and the condition report with a TMR spokesperson saying. “The Barron River Bridge report is currently being finalised and we are continuing inspections,” the spokesperson said. “We understand the strong community interest and will provide an update as soon as possible. “This update will include advice about the duration of the single-lane closure. “The single-lane closure is a precaution while we carry out investigations and the average delay is less than two minutes. “The bridge is safe and we thank motorists and residents for North Queensland’s Leading Automotive & Industrial Cooling System Specialist. their patience.” Mr Katter is now calling on Mareeba and Tablelands residents to show their support for a new road from Mareeba to Cairns by signing his petition, available on the Queensland Government website. “There are seventy thousand people that live on the other side of the Great Divide, and a new road will allow them to get mineral and agricultural products out but there needs to be significant work done,” Mr Katter said. “The North Queensland tourism industry will also be able to reap huge benefits from improved transport links, particularly as the region starts its economic recovery from the COVID pandemic. “There will an explosion of people living on the Tablelands as they will be able to access Cairns in 25 minutes.” Mr Katter and Hill MP Shane Knuth said they have taken the drastic action of launching the petition to the State Government because “The Member for Cook Cynthia Lui, has been missing in action and failing to adequately represent her electorate,” they said. “It is now up to the state government to secure the safety of North Queensland residents,” Mr Katter said. “A report prepared by the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads on the condition of the Barron River bridge has been withheld from the public because it is ‘too technical’ – an excuse that I call laughable.”
Mareeba resident Denis McKinley signed the petition launched last week to get a new road from the Tablelands to Cairns.
Mareeba resident, Denis McKinley said he signed the petition as new road infrastructure was overdue. “We need to get heavy loads in and out of Mareeba,” he said. “Because of this road not
happening it’s stagnating development across the Tablelands. “If we had a decent road, we could have big industry up here, which would mean more jobs, which means more pay packets which then gets spent back into
the community.” The petition is available to sign at Bob Katter’s office in Mareeba, Shane Knuth’s office in Atherton and also online at www.parliament.qld.gov.au/ or go to https://bit.ly/3bzSXsJ

Train down to one trip a day Kuranda Scenic Rail will now only be travelling once a day to Kuranda.
BY Phil Brandel Residents and business owners in the rainforest village of Kuranda feel like they may be suffering a death by a thousand cuts after Queensland Rail announced that it would be reducing the Kuranda Scenic Railway (KSR) down to one trip per day. The news comes after Skyrail announced that from February they would only be operating on weekends until the April School Holidays. The train will now leave Cairns at 9.30am, arriving at 11.25am and leave Kuranda for the return trip at 3.30pm. President of the Kuranda Traders Association Dei Gould said even though the news came as a shock she was not surprised. “The other day we only had nine people on the train, so financially it doesn’t make sense to run two trains,” she said. “We will still have the same number of visitors coming up on the train, it just means that they will all leave and arrive around the same time.” Dei said The Kuranda Trad-
need to do this maintenance now and thankfully not later when we are back to capacity,” she said. “We will just have to market to the self-drive market and hope that we can fill up that one train so that it’s viable.” Queensland Rail Head of Regional Jim Benstead said the locomotives undergo regular maintenance, however recent inspections identified additional work was required on some of the locomotives. “The Kuranda Scenic Railway (KSR) will temporarily reduce from two to one daily return services from today, allowing for major locomotive maintenance to ensure ongoing safety and reliability,” he said. “Customer safety and the reliability of our fleet are the highest priority, which is why we are undertaking some additional maintenance works on KSR locomotives. “This means from today (23 February 2021), Queensland Rail will temporarily operate just one daily return service – the 9.30am Cairns to Kuranda service and its return service at
ers Association, nor any local business were notified ahead of the decision. “I found out from friends, nobody in the association was officially notified by Queensland Rail,” she said. “This time of year is normally quiet for us, but with the border closures and no international travellers, this year is especially quiet.” Group Director of Marketing for the Kuranda Koala Gardens, and Birdworld Angela Freeman said that the news came as a surprise. “We only knew because people started phoning us, we had no official notice from Queensland Rail,” she said. “The train gets in at 11.30am leaves at 3.30pm so visitors only have four hours in Kuranda. “Visitors will arrive and have lunch, look around and then they will have to go home. Ms Freeman said that the decision means they now have a reduced opportunity to get visitors at a time when visitors numbers are already limited. “We have to accept that they
3.30pm. “Due to lower than usual patronage at the moment as a result of COVID, as well as the recent increase in accepted capacity onboard each service, we expect to still meet our usual weekday demand with this one return service per day.” Mr Benstead apologised for the short notice regarding the change. “The change was communicated as soon as possible after the decision was made, with direct trade operators who hold KSR ticket allocations notified on Monday and broader stakeholders notified on Tuesday,” he said. “While we recognise that this is a sudden change, we have put safety first and are addressing the identified maintenance requirement in a timely manner. “Current customer demand is still low in the wake of COVID, so with the temporary reduction to one daily return service, KSR still has capacity to meet current ticket sales.
“From Saturday, the current onboard capacity limit of 50 per cent will be lifted to 100 per cent. “We will continue to work with industry partners to provide
the great customer experience that Kuranda has on offer.” “Queensland Rail expects to return to the full KSR schedule in April 2021.”

The World Day of Prayer is a worldwide movement of Christian churches from multiple denominations who come together each year to observe a common day of prayer. World Day of Prayer is observed in 170 countries and the next event is this Friday March 5, with multiple churches from across the Tablelands coming together to pray. The tradition goes back to 1812 when women encouraged one another to engage in communal prayer within their mission auxiliaries and associa-
tions. Each year a different country is nominated and prayed for, this year Christians from around the world will be praying for Vanuatu and money raised on the day will be donated to Christian organisations in Vanuatu. In Mareeba, the host church is Saint Thomas of Villanova Church in Constance Street. Mareeba Event coordinator Sue Hoger said several different denominations would come together under the roof of St Thomas’s to pray together at 10am.
“Anybody from any religious denomination is welcome,” Sue said. “So far, we know the Catholics, Baptists and Anglicans are all coming, but anyone is welcome even Buddhists.” In Atherton World Prayer Day will take place at Saint Mary's Anglican Church in Atherton on Friday from 9.30am. Major Peter Townsend from The Salvation Army said all churches and denominations are welcome to participate. “It is a great way of showing
the unity of the church, this is a good way to show that we are all one,” he said. “Initially the World Day of Payer started as The Women’s World Day of Prayer, but its now just the World Day of Prayer, which allows us fellows to get involved. “This year a proportion of money raised on the day will go to a trauma healing project in Vanuatu.” For more information go to www.worlddayofprayeraustralia.org
Shire goes solar Mareeba Shire Council’s (MSC) solar project has charged ahead with several sites now fitted with solar power systems. Nine Council-owned facilities across the Shire including swimming pools, treatment plants, pump stations and the Mareeba Cedric Davies Community Hub will be connected to solar photovoltaic infrastructure. Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin said the million-dollar project was made possible by the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland Program and was at no cost to the ratepayer.
Locations include Dimbulah Swimming Pool, Mareeba Swimming Pool, Kuranda Aquatic Centre, Mareeba Water Treatment Plant, Kuranda Water Treatment Plant, Cedric Davies Community Hub, Centenary Booster Pump Station, Mareeba Water Treatment Plant Booster
Pump and Mareeba Wastewater Treatment Plant. In 2017, Council installed solar panels on the Rankin Street office and Kowa Street depot, resulting in savings over $150,000 per year. The project is on track to be completed by 30 June 2021.

TURN SUNSHINE INTO SAVINGS!
“We are extremely grateful to the State Government for allowing Council to invest in such an important environmental initiative that will result in long-term benefits for the community,” Cr Toppin said. “The solar panels could save Council over $100,000 a year which is a significant saving for a small rural Council such as ours.” It is estimated that Council will cut electricity costs by transitioning around 31% of the sites’ energy usage to renewable energy, substantially reducing Council’s carbon emissions by approximately 600 tons per year.

The Dimbulah Lions Club have made an early call to cancel their annual Lions Festival, but will still go ahead with their 60th year celebration. Due to COVID regulations, the small volunteer club simply does not have the people and infrastructure to comply, for the festival to go ahead in May. President of the Dimbulah Lions Club, Brendon Goldsworthy is disappointed that the popular festival will not go ahead for the second year in a row. “The COVID related precautions, the manpower needed to stage the event and the cost associated with it all is just beyond the club’s capabilities, so we had no choice but to call off the festival again this year,” he said. “It is disappointing, we were all looking forward to having the festival this year especially since the Dimbulah Lions Club will be celebrating its 60th Diamond Anniversary and we wanted to make it a grand occasion.” Not all is lost however as the Lions Club will now hold a fundraising cabaret, just like the old

Millaa Millaa road repaired with recycled glass A section of the Millaa Millaa to Malanda road has been resealed using recycled glass as a substitute to sand. The recycled glass used for the project was collected from bottles returned through the Containers for Change scheme in the Cairns area. The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) joined with Pioneer North Queensland (PNQ) to repair the 1.2-kilometer section of road using over a million recycled bottles. On this project asphalt manufactured with five percent recycled glass was incorporated into the top layer, underlying repairs were completed using asphalt manufactured with 10 percent recycled glass. Chief Executive of Container
Exchange Ken Noye said developing markets for recycled materials was an important focus in growing the circular economy in this state. “A vital function of this scheme is to generate economic activity for Queensland,” he said. “This project demonstrates a way to apply a sustainable recycled material by utilizing it in the construction of roads. “It is a viable and beneficial alternative to using natural or manufactured sand.” More than 3 billion containers have been exchanged for refund since the Containers for Change scheme began two years ago. The positive impacts of this project can not only be felt by
TMR and road users but also the broader economy and environment. “There are positive sustainability impacts in this project because the recycled product was sourced from glass collected locally through the Containers for Change scheme,” Mr Noye said. “This forgoes the need to transport the glass to another destination for recycling and saves the emissions that transport would create. “The scheme has ambitious targets we have injected $300 million into the community and produced a 54 per cent decrease in beverage container litter in the environment.” If you’re looking to stop your empty drinks from going to landfill then head to your local

Thanks to a local Fast Track Pain Management System, Atherton resident Michelle Duncan left her debilitating pain behind her and has not looked back in over seven years. After waking one day with excruciating back pain Michelle was diagnosed with arthritis in her lower spine and joint dysfunction, causing intense nerve pressure and making ordinary life extremely difficult. Michelle visited a physio where she was told about her issues, she could not eat, sleep or even walk without incredible discomfort and pain. Eventually Michelle’s

GP referred her to the Cairns and Hinterlands Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) new Fast Track Pain Management System. Michelle said that attending the clinic a year ago was a lifechanging decision. “The pain is nowhere as bad as it was,” she said. “Going to pain management they have taught me not to fear my pain, and to learn what my body can do. “I find it incredible what I am doing now considering I didn’t move for seven years.” Now after attending the clinic Michelle does yoga every morning, exercises six days a week, swims and goes
for walks, things she never imagined she would be able to do again. The Fast Track Pain Management System it is a multidisciplinary pain service that started in June last year, it provides high value, evidencebased care close to people’s homes. Since starting, the clinic has received 158 referrals nearly 20 referrals a month, double the estimated 8 patients a month referral rate. Jay Wittem from CHHHS North Queensland Persistent Pain Service says that chronic pain affects 1 in 5 people and costs the FNQ economy $1.45 billion each year.
“Chronic pain is common, costly and disabling,” he said. “For people suffering chronic pain they can feel like they are the only ones fighting this battle. “They’re not, there are some very effective pathways to manage pain.” The clinics are based in Cairns but with a particular rural and remote focus they are regularly scheduled at the Atherton and Mareeba hospitals. If you’re currently living with debilitating chronic pain and would like a referral to the Fast Track Pain Management System talk to your GP.

Boost to stay at home care Elderly Atherton residents will be able to receive care from home for longer after the Atherton Hospital received a grant to boost their home support program. Atherton Community Health has only been running the Commonwealth Home Support Program since February 8, providing care to residents in the comfort of their own homes. The care includes physio and occupational therapy, social work, dietetics and nutrition, speech pathology and nursing. Now after receiving a $222,204.00 Commonwealth Grant these services can be expanded to provide care for longer to the residents who need it. Atherton Community Health nurse unit manager Kelly Pollock said that this kind of stayat-home care program is well
needed on the Tablelands. “The biggest benefit of this program is that care is delivered from within the home, people don’t come to us we go to them,” she said. “There is a huge community demand and need for these services so it’s a matter of providing the services that the community needs. “The number one comment we get is, “why can’t we have more of these services?.” This grant has allowed Atherton Community Health to expand some of the services they currently have and add additional services to the Tablelands. The current grant will last for three months before running out, in that time Atherton Community Health will be searching for more long-term grant opportunities.

Teams will start at Dimbulah at 6am with a mandatory stop at Petford catered by the Irvinebank Fire Brigade, before heading onto Almaden and then finishing at the Chillagoe Town Hall. Competitors can choose to run in three stages, the 65km Almaden Amble for social teams the 98km Pioneer Push for competitive teams and the 33km Chillagoe Chase for Solos, Duos and Trios. Mareeba Shire Councilor and chair of The Great Wheelbarrow Race Locky Benstead is excited to bring The Great Wheelbarrow Race back in 2021. “We always wanted to make sure we were going to do something in the name of the wheelbarrow race and the legacy it has,” he said. “Council is offering huge support with staff, vehicles and signage so we are very lucky to have their support to make sure this race happens. “I’m really looking forward to it, it’s going to be something that a lot of teams were hungry
to run last year will enjoy.” With the new one-day format the talent quest and other such events have been cancelled to make way for new ironman style challenge. The Great Wheelbarrow Race not only gives hungry runners another chance to run the wheelbarrow way, but it also gives a vital push to those communities doing it tough. “It’s a very important thing to make sure we continue to bring people into these towns,” Cr Benstead said. “If we do not have anyone coming into town, buying at takeaways, the pubs, the hardware shops, then they don’t open. “It’s a good shot in the arm for those communities that desperately need it.” Presentations are being held in Chillagoe and competitors are encouraged to stay around and celebrate their success. It is unsure whether the race will return to its usual three-day format next year but it is something that Cr Benstead is hoping for. “We don’t know what’s happening tomorrow let alone next year, I would hope that we will go back to a three-day format,” he said. “That’s how it was started and that’s the legacy of the race.” Nominations close on Sunday, May 1 and Cr Benstead is urging people to register sooner rather than later. Visit www.greatwheelbarrowrace.com to register.

One of Far North Queensland’s most iconic and loved individual animals has gone missing. Elvis the Cassowary has been a well-known site on the Kuranda range for years. Elvis was a delight to road users and visitors to the Kuranda region, where he used to forage on the side of the road with his chicks. Over the past few years Elvis had suffered several tragedies with all his chicks from last year killed by suspected vehicle strikes. Now fears of Elvis’s demise has locals worried as two of his chicks from his latest batch were found wondering around alone near the Kuranda bus depot. Kuranda Conservation community nursery co-ordinator Jax Bergersen said Elvis was last seen over a week ago near the cassowary’s nest. “The last sighting of Elvis

Ms Bergersen said volunteers had been on several searches to find Elvis, with no luck. A DES spokesperson said officers were attempting to rescue the second of Elvis’ chicks, with the intention of taking them into protective care. “Once both cassowary chicks are rescued, DES wildlife officers will place them in a privately operated cassowary rehabilitation centre at Barrine, where they will remain until they are ready to be released back into the wild,” they said. Parents across the region are being urged to watch out for Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) following dozens of cases that have been identified in the Far North. There have been more than 60 presentations of (HFMD) to Cairns Hospital’s Emergency Department since the start of the year, including nine patient admissions. Tropical Public Health Services Cairns public health medical officer, Dr Annie PrestonThomas, said the team was aware of at least 15 day-care centres affected by the disease across the Cairns and Tablelands regions since early January. “HFMD is a viral illness common in children,” she said. “We are currently investigating why and how this virus is circulating in our region, but it is commonly linked to warm weather. “There is a rising global incidence of HFMD, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. “We usually see a small number of cases during our hotter parts of the year, but this year has been especially severe.” HFMD is usually a mild illness that occurs mainly in young children but can also affect older children and adults. It is caused by several different enteroviruses. People can be infected with these viruses but not develop
symptoms of the disease. Outbreaks of HFMD can occur among groups of children, including in childcare centres. Dr Preston-Thomas said the disease usually began with a mild fever and a runny nose. “This is followed by a sore throat and mouth, with the appearance of blisters in the mouth, and on hands and feet,” she said. “Sometimes blisters may also be seen on knees, elbows or in the nappy area. “The blisters usually last for 3-5 days.” She said in rare cases, those infected with HFMD go on to develop neurological disease such as meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain), encephalitis (inflammation of the brain itself), or paralysis. “Any person with consistent symptoms should not attend day care or school until they are symptom free, and all blisters have completely dried,” she said. “To prevent the disease spreading, ensure you practice good hand hygiene; clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and soiled items, including toys; avoid sharing cups, eating utensils, towels, and clothing; and teach children about cough and sneeze etiquette.” To assist in prevention of spread, parents should report the illness to the director of the childcare centre or school principal.

Seeking funding 2021 Great to help our youth Wheelbarrow Race BY PHIL BRANDEL
Could a simple idea that was rolled out at the PCYC in Moree NSW be the solution to youth crime in Mareeba? In 2018 the PCYC in Moree decided that something had to be done about the rising youth crime problem in the area. Moree PCYC manager Tayla Macey said that children roaming the streets had been an issue for some time. “There was a big cry for a drop-in centre to open, but there was never any funding or anything to run it,” she said. Local volunteers, police and staff volunteered their time to stay open late on Saturday nights, to get youth off the street and to hopefully get them engaged with residents and to build relationships with the local police. “Once the police came on board, we knew it needed to happen, so we made it happen,” she said. Tayla said the centre is open until 1am on Saturday nights and then police drop the children at home. “For some of the kids being on the street is safer than being at home,” she said. “We stay open late, we play sports, give the kids activities to do and give them a feed.” Tayla said one of the positives was that kids got to play games against the local police officers and from that they slowly built relationships. “We get between 80 -100 children turning up on a Saturday night,” she said. “They can play basketball, touch football, cricket and we also have a chillout area for kids to colour in or play.” Tayla said the oldest kids were about 16 -17 but they also had children as young as 3 - 4 years old attending. “It fills in their time, it’s safer to be here than at home, Tayla said. “Most kids don’t want to be causing trouble, so if you give them something to do or somewhere to go, they will go there.” Since starting the program there has been a decrease in youth crime on all nights.
1-DAY CHALLENGE Saturday 15th May Mary-Anne West and Zach Kulka from Mareeba PCYC at The Granite Esplanade in Mareeba are asking for more funding to stay open later for youth.
“They know that if they get into trouble there were consequences for them to attend the program,” Tayla said. “They have also built relationships with residents and police. “Police have gotten right behind it; we also have community members coming along and the police drop in during the night.” Tayla said that everyone noticed a difference to how the youth reacted to the police afterwards. “They have a good experience on a Saturday night and when they run into the police on the street, they have a better relationship,” she said. “When they played a game of basketball against the police officers, it breaks down a lot of barriers.” Tayla said that it was all done by the local police and residents. “We have received minimal funding, everything is donated, including the volunteers time,” she said. “We didn’t have any funding to start with, the town needed it, so we just did it. “Most of it has been from donations of food, games and sporting equipment. “We have only been granted about $3000 since we started.” Mareeba PCYC Club manager Mary-Anne West said she would love to roll out a latenight drop-in centre, but she des-

perately needed more funding and resources. “We need funding to pay wages and to pay for food,” she said. “We would also like to get some elders to come in and hold some art and craft activities and engagement.” Mary-Anne said that they regularly held BBQ’s and basketball events at Arnold park and The Granite Esplanade which needs lighting. “If there was lighting at The Granite Esplanade we could stay longer and engage the kids more, at the moment we need to leave once it gets dark,” she said. “We would love more funding to stay open late on a Saturday night. “We also need donations of food and consumables and if any volunteers want to help, please contact me.” When approached by The Express Mayor Angela Toppin said “Council is very supportive of these initiatives and will be advocating on behalf of the PCYC to get additional funding to offer these kind of services,” Cr Toppin said. “Council is also looking at the possibilities of getting some lighting along the Granite Creek Esplanade and will also be improving lighting at Arnold Park so that the PCYC can increase services particularly for the youth in a safe environment.”

Malanda set to become mural hub Artist Tom Cosic, adds the finishing touches to one of the murals. Photo By John de Rooy - Tableland Photography.

Cairns leads cardiac care
Malanda is quickly becoming the hub for murals in Far North Queensland after four new paintings were recently revealed at The Malanda Majestic Theatre building on the exit doors in Catherine Street. Designed and painted by Mareeba artist Tom Cosic, the murals reflect past and present usage of the old Theatre. Mr Cosic said he was given
the brief of reflecting what goes on inside the theatre. “We wanted to represent what goes on there, it’s not just movies, there’s a theatre company as well,” he said. “We were not allowed to paint on the actual building due to its heritage listing, so we painted on the exit doors. “We came up with the idea of making it look like you were
looking through the doors and into the building.” Mr Cosic said each mural told a different story. “The first door represents the box office, the second door is the audience, the third is showing the old chairs and then there’s the stage and backstage,” he said. “I used photos from the historical society as a reference. “It was easy three weeks of
solid work, a couple of times we had to stop due to the rain but in the end I’m really happy how it turned out.” The funding for the mural was made available from The Regional Arts Development Fund which is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Tablelands Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
Thanks to the efforts of the Cairns Hospital cardiologist team, local heart attack patients will not have to live their lives with stints after their use of new bioresorbable scaffolds. Cairns Hospital cardiologists have been working with 80 patients who have had bioresorbable scaffolds inserted into the coronary arteries of their heart after a heart attack. The team of interventional cardiologists at Cairns Hospital have been among the most prolific users of the new devices in the world and are passionate about its benefits. Cardiologist Dr Anthony Brazzale said “normal” stents stay in the body for life but the bioresorbable scaffolds were completely absorbed within 12 months. “They’re great because with the traditional stent there is a risk the body will reject the device and this can result in unwanted late complications,” he said.
“We liken it to when you have a broken bone, you treat the bone with a cast and once the bone heals, the cast is removed. “This is the same except the scaffold absorbs naturally through the body over time. “If I had a heart attack, this is the stent I would want to have.” Cairns Hospital is the only Queensland site implementing the new scaffolds and only one of five sites in Australia. They were also the highest recruiter in Australia and the fifth highest recruiter in the world. “Our department is very committed to providing patients of North Queensland with world-leading contemporary cardiac care,” Dr Brazzale said. Currently the study for the bioresorbable scaffolds is still ongoing as the last patient was recruited in July 2020, the study will then close in July 2025 after the five-year post-implant follow up.

Surviving Polio BY RHYS THOMAS
Polio survivor Carol Gear with the Mareeba Rotary’s ‘end polio now’ sign in Byrnes Street Mareeba which goes up in town every February to spread awareness of Polio.
For many young people, the word Polio carries little weight, but others remember the time and trouble that Polio wrought on young kids lives. Diagnosed with Poliomyelitis in 1951 at just 16 months old, Mareeba local Carol Gear has been living with the effects of the viral disease for 70 years. Polio is a highly infectious disease targeting young kids, it invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis even leading to death if left untreated. Carol counts herself as one of the lucky ones as her mother quickly noticed that something was wrong and took her to the doctor who then diagnosed her. In 2021 we have vaccines for Polio but back in the 1950’s there wasn’t, so Carol relied on treatments and surgeries to help her walk. Despite being diagnosed at a young age and having her leg muscle development hindered, Carol never let it weigh her down. “At school I was spoilt, the teachers would give me half a field start and I thought I’d beat the other kids, but I never did,” she said. “I played basketball, I played squash and I swam.
“Put me in the pool and no one could beat me.” Years on, Carol has had surgeries on her foot to try and get it to stay flat as it was arching, she had her tendons cut and eventually pins put in her heel. The pins enabled Carol to get rid of her calliper and let her walk and play with her grandkids, some of which never noticed her Polio leg. Now Polio is 99.9 per cent eradicated across the world with the help of organizations such as WHO and Rotary. If eradication efforts stopped today within 10 years Polio could paralyse as many as 200,000 children each year. Mareeba Rotary holds fundraising events year-round raising money for these eradication efforts and every February, Rotary’s birth month, an ‘End Polio Now’ sign is erected in the main street. Having lived through Polio Carol is amazed by the work done by groups like Rotary and the support they provide. “We need people like that, we need Rotary,” she said. “Without these types of organisations it would be so much harder in the world. “I’m very happy that Rotary get behind Polio and hopefully they can help end it, you’d hate to see another Polio epidemic.”
Dimbulah local and event organizer Tara McGrath is encouraging people to come along this Sunday and help clean up Dimbulah
Get ready to step up and clean up Dimbulah locals are being encouraged to ‘step up to clean up’ for Clean Up Australia Day this Sunday, March 7. Clean Up Australia Day is held annually across Australia where schools, businesses, communities and individuals do what they can and help clean up their town, business or school. Organizer of the Dimbulah step up to clean up event Tara McGrath said that she started this event last year after seeing the rubbish littered around Dimbulah. “Once I signed up, I noticed around town there was a lot of rubbish, especially coming into
town from people throwing it out of their car,” she said. “I thought we need to create some awareness in the town to get people involved and help clean it up. “We picked up four ute loads of rubbish last year.” Everyone who nominates on the day will get special biodegradable bags to put the rubbish in along with gloves and a small pack with some food and water for the day. Registration for the event starts at 6:30am at the Dimbulah Community Centre, the event is set to start at 7am and will run until it gets too hot.
It’s time to Indulge! DONALD JAMES WATERS Artist (OAM) Don is coming to Atherton to encourage those who always wanted to paint and never had the opportunity, to those who do paint and want to try new techniques. We have kicked 2020 away and let’s start with new beginnings and indulge ourselves. The primary aim of this workshop is to learn to work with spontaneity and gain artistic independence. The workshop will begin working with charcoal, developing line and tonal values. You will then focus on the progression of this technique using white acrylic paint to complete a tonal painting and learn to effectively seal the charcoal artwork allowing layers of coloured glaze to be applied over the abstracted base. Your second major work will be working in abstract expres-
sionism understanding the power of colour and using brush strokes. The combination of these various techniques will be applied together to create your major piece on canvas. At all times throughout the workshop there will be discussions on composition and balance, working with spontaneity to give your paintings an exciting freedom, movement and emotion. Don will aim to work with each individual throughout the day to develop their vision. Don’s career has taken his art to every corner of the globe and his distinctive style has made its way to many private and corporate collectors alike, including that of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s art collection

Day of golf for mental health
Anthony, Reece, Alan, Amelia and Ben.
LEFT: Rod Armstrong.
Workers were able to trade their shovels and picks for beers and golf clubs last Friday as Robinson Civil Group (RCG) hosted their second Men’s Mental Health Golf Day at the Atherton Golf Club. The day brought together men from the civil construction industry who normally spend their workday building roads and operating large machinery and gave them the job of kicking back and playing golf instead. RCG CEO, Caytlyn Mead developed the concept of a ‘whole of company event’ to talk about men’s mental health after seeing the impact it can have on men in the industry.
“Poor mental health can show up as poor work attitude and or inconsistent performance,” she said. “My concern is that this could quickly escalate to unemployment, break downs in the family unit and ultimately the worst-case scenario, suicide. “This has a huge impact on both men and their families, underlying issues of mental health do not need to go unaddressed nor ignored within the workplace.” To address her concerns Mrs Mead enlisted the support of the company directors to give employees a day out on the green where they get paid to talk,
laugh, and play golf. Director Kelene Jenkinson applauded the initiative as workplace mental health and morale is important. “Men within our workforce are valued employees,” she said. “We want to provide them the opportunity to connect with each other on a more social level to enhance their working relationships. “This provides the opportunity for them to address personal concerns.” This event was also used to help raise money for the Atherton Mens Shed and the $2000 goal that was set was well and truly reached.

Mareeba Shire’s leading woman
From farm girl to educational leader, Mareeba Shire’s first female Mayor, Angela Toppin has overcome many challenges to become the influential woman she is today.
Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin with the Mayors before her. INSET: Mrs Toppin in 1985 as a grade 10 teacher.
By Ellie Fink From farm girl to leader, Mareeba Shire Council’s first female Mayor, Angela Toppin, has overcome many challenges to become the influential woman she is today. From the early stages of life, Angela was always a determined and resilient woman working on her immigrant
parent’s tobacco farm in Mareeba. As the eldest daughter of four, Angela took on the responsibility of household chores from a young age, on the farm doing heavy work and assisting with household duties, leaving little time for homework. “You would come home from school and help out on
the farm, and then you would have dinner and clean up, meaning you would not get time for homework until 7pm,” she said. Angela said one of her greatest achievements was graduating from Mareeba State High School. “Lack of money did not stop me, I worked hard to be rewarded with a teaching
scholarship and travelled to Brisbane to start my tertiary education,” she said. After a very rewarding teaching career, Angela was appointed as the first permanent female Principal at Malanda State High School. She was then promoted to Principal at Mareeba State High School and later moved on to take on the ‘challenging yet rewarding’ role of Principal of Cairns State High School – one of the largest secondary state schools in Far North Queensland. “These leadership roles were very rewarding and allowed me to mentor many aspiring leaders,” Angela said. “One of my highlights has been witnessing many past students achieve beyond my expectations and their expectations.” In 2016, she was recognised for her outstanding contribution to education. “One of my proudest moments was when I was awarded the Queensland Secondary Principals’ Association Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 for significant contribution to Queensland state education,” she said.
Angela says that although she has accomplished many firsts, she did not set out to do that. “I set out to achieve my goals and to inspire young people to achieve their personal best,” she said. After retiring as the Principal of Cairns State High, her family convinced her to run for Council. “I thought that now was my time to give back to the community that supported me in achieving all the goals I have achieved,” she said. “It was time for me to give back.” After spending time as a Councillor, in 2020 she decided to put her hand up and run for Mayor. Angela said her ‘can do attitude’ kept her focussed during the campaign which saw her win at the March 2020 election and become Mareeba Shire’s first female Mayor. “I used to always tell my students to never give up and if you preach something, you should definitely practise it,” she said. “I knew when I became Mayor that my proven track record of commitment, hard
work, honesty and integrity was very important to me and would assist me in this leadership role as Mayor. “As Mayor of Mareeba Shire, I particularly enjoy working for my communities and improving the liveability for all residents in the Shire.” Through many highs and lows Angela said that something most important to her is her family. “Their continued love, support and encouragement fuels my energy levels,” she said. “I now have the greatest pleasure of being the grandmother of four beautiful grandchildren.”

MARY GRAHAM
From humble beginnings on my parent’s tobacco farm to a wife, mother, grandmother, manager, business owner and councillor. Growing up I could never have imagined that I could have achieved what I have to date. For example, when I was asked if I was interested in becoming a councillor, I had never given it any thought, but after talking it over with my family I said yes. The reason I ran for councillor was so that I could make a difference, by looking for opportunities to grow our Shire so that our children have the same opportunities that I had, to be able to grow up, work, live and enjoy all we have to offer within this great Shire of ours.
ST STEPHEN’S CATHOLIC COLLEGE

Academic learning provides the connection to multiple possibilities and our spirit of service drives our students to step up to make the world a better place. We are committed to developing the next generation of leaders. On March 8 we will host IWD celebrations with breakfast and a panel of dynamic local women to share their leadership wisdom.

MAYOR ANGELA TOPPIN
As Mayor, Mareeba Shire Council, I take this opportunity to celebrate and thank all the tremendous women and girls in our Shire in shaping a more equal future. This year’s theme of Women in Leadership highlights the centrality of women’s contributions to decision making. Across our Shire, women are leading in their communities, workplaces and organisations. Throughout the challenging COVID Pandemic, women brought different experiences, perspectives and skills to the table to lead and support decisions and policies at the highest level to ensure that our communities remained safe and better for all. So on 8 March, I wish you all a wonderful International Women’s Day and thank you sincerely for ‘the difference’ you are making in our communities and Shire.

MARGARET BLACK AM All those years ago, living in Warragamba where my Dad was the medical officer during the building of the dam, who would have thought that I would end up a successful business woman and leader with an “AM” after my name for over 30 years of voluntary service. My life has taken many roads, living in isolation on cattle stations in Qld, NT and Malaysia, home schooling my children to settling in Atherton 30 years ago. Throughout my life I have never thought that I couldn’t do something because I was a woman. The thought never crossed my mind. Be who you are, set yourself a goal, yes you will stumble, keep going and achieve. The first step is often the hardest.

CYNTHIA LUI MP – MEMBER FOR COOK International Women’s Day is a day to celebrate and acknowledge the wonderful contribution women make to our communities throughout the Cook electorate. This year’s theme ‘Choose to Challenge’, highlights that we are all responsible for our own thoughts and actions - all day, every day. We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. Together, we can all help create an inclusive world, so let’s all choose to challenge. I believe that recognising and celebrating the contribution of women and girls enriches and strengthens our communities and creates a more equal Queensland where everyone is valued. I encourage everyone to get involved in Queensland’s Women’s Week that highlights Celebrating our present and owning our future. It’s a week for women, and men to recognise the immense contribution of women and girls to our communities.

LETTERS to the EDITOR
OPINION With Phil Brandel @Philbrandel1
Email: editorial@theexpressnewspaper.com.au
To like or not to like? A week after Facebook decided to ban Australian news on its platform, it announced it would slowly reverse the decision after coming to a deal with the Federal Government. Treasurer, Josh Frydenberg announced on Tuesday, February 23 a compromise had been reached at the 11th hour. Facebook’s Australian managing director, Will Easton, confirmed news would be restored in Facebook newsfeeds in Australia following agreement over the changing of the code. “We’re pleased that we’ve been able to reach an agreement with the Australian Government and appreciate the constructive discussions we’ve had with treasurer Frydenberg over the past week,” he said. “We are satisfied that the Australian Government has agreed to a number of changes and guarantees that address our core concerns about allowing commercial deals that recognise the value our platform provides to publishers relative to the value we receive from them.” Later the company’s global VP for partnerships, Campbell Brown indicated that the company could pull news from Australia again. “Going forward, the government has clarified we will retain the ability to decide if news appears on Facebook so that we won’t automatically be subject to a forced negotiation.” In a nutshell Facebook can decide who they pay and how much and can still pull the news at any time they wish. It’s no coincidence that the big news corporations are receiving favourable treatment and grants from the Federal Government while the ABC is getting its budget cut.
Australia’s biggest news suppliers are trying to triple dip. First they advertise stories that you need to pay to read, then they populate their website and stories with paid for advertising and now they are asking Facebook for more money, because they choose to use Facebook and place their content on the platform voluntarily. That Facebook have potentially agreed to the now watered-down legislation, is more about paying a token fee to make the problem go away, rather than agreeing to paying more money to the big three news organisations that they don’t deserve. The Australian Liberal party has proudly waved the free market flag for decades, so it beggar’s belief that the Federal Government is now involved in what is a commercial disagreement. Can you imagine the government fronting up to McDonald’s and saying, “Hey give some money to Hungry Jacks!” Questions have got to be asked why Google has made deals which Channel 7, 9/Fairfax and News Corp even before the new code was passed by parliament? Whereas small independent publishers won’t pick up anything. Why is the Federal Government running a protection racket for the biggest news players in Australia? Could it be that we are in an election year, and the current government has been rocked by sports rorts, rape rorts and the bungling of the Aged Care industry? It means right about now they need friends in very high places.
We can live without China – the proof is in the pudding I have been screaming at the Federal Government that we need to be aggressively marketing out exports. Free trade deals aren't worth two bob. China has spat in the face of the agreement they signed with the Abbott Government. Economic nationalism trumps economic rationalism. The VIP markets (Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines) plus Japan and Thailand
have a combined population of 720 million people, which is nearly as big as China. These are the people we should be trading with. The Australian Newspaper (23/02/2021) reports that coal has added $2B to the bottom line of Australia’s budget, despite China’s blanket ban on our coal. The article states, the demand from... "established and emerging markets – including Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam and India – remained strong in the backend of last year as sales to China plummeted following Bei-
HAVE YOUR SAY
jing’s ban on local coal miners.” So, there you have it. The VIP markets can deliver for Australia, it’s already happening. Bob Katter, Federal Member for Kennedy

ENTERTAINMENT Action packed year of racing and fashion The Mareeba Turf Club will be action packed with racing and fashion this year with two additional races added to their racing calendar. At the beginning of the year the Turf Club only had plans to host four meetings in 2021, however two extra race days have been transferred to Mareeba, the Laura and Einasleigh races which were called off due to COVID restrictions. This is something that Mareeba Turf Club President Alex Malliff is very excited for and thinks it’s a great thing for the club. “We are rapped, as a club we are so happy for things to be going the way they are now,” he said. “There is a really positive vibe around the club. “We are a lot busier and hopefully it brings a lot of new people into racing.” The next meet on the cards for Mareeba

Change of direction for Ravenshoe farmers BY SALLY TURLEY In June 2019, Mark and Francis Toohey stepped away from 100 years of family tradition of farming cattle and potatoes, to set up their new enterprise, “Buy Avocados Online,” and their timing seems to have been perfect. Buy Avocadoes Online delivers 2.7- 4.7 kg satchels of chemical free avocadoes, picked fresh to order from their trees, direct to their customers’ door and includes helpful information on how to manage, eat and store their fruit to maximise the eating experience. Their new business has grown exponentially during 2020 and they have accumulated a strong customer support base, many of whom now have regular standing orders for product. Believing the established system of getting food to producers served neither the producer nor the customer, the Toohey family couldn't have picked a better time to launch their fledgling online business. They, like other growers, had been selling their avocadoes through the Rocky Point packing shed and onto the two major supermarkets via the wholesale markets, but they were frustrated by the inefficiencies and shortcomings of that system. Their corporate purchasers demanded blemish free fruit conforming to specific size and weight criteria, which were put on the road for too long, gas ripened and then put into cold stor-
age, resulting in a very hit and miss product for consumers and wastage on farm. Covid has changed the way a lot of people shop and the relationship they have with producers. Customers are looking increasingly to food as a source of good nutrition and healthy outcomes and are now actively taking part in making good food choices. “We stopped using Glyphosate three years ago and soon after we gambled on our first fully organic orchard. We were already a long way towards an organic operation before the official decision was made,” Mr Toohey said. At the end of last year, the whole farm was declared “organic in conversion” pending full organic accreditation in the near future. While the business' sales made steady progress throughout the last half of 2019, it was when Mark and Francis made the decision to hire marketing coordinator Nicki Dyson that things really started to take off. Nicki jumped onto the business' Facebook page, onto Sell, Swap and Buy sites and any other relevant platforms along the east coast of Australia, and started building the story about the Toohey family, their business and their philosophies about good food and good health. This drove traffic onto their website and as more customers tasted their fruit and liked what they tasted, the conversation be-

gan in earnest. But it wasn't all plain sailing and the company learned a few operational lessons about delivery of product along the way. Even though Covid worked in their favour, producing a new type of customer, hungry for online shopping, organic produce and the opportunity to support Australian farmers and small businesses, their delivery system, Australia Post, chose then to go into meltdown. They ended up with delayed and lost bags of avocadoes turning up as far away as Perth and sometimes not arriving until they were rotten and unusable. Packages labeled as avocadoes from the outside were often raided en-route leaving customers with none or only part of their order. Nicki Dyson was full time online during this initial phase, answering questions, reassuring customers, mitigating disasters and re-sending orders that had gone wrong. Interestingly, Ms Dyson said their customer support only grew during these tricky times. She believed that for customers, it was about making that connection with the producer and feeling valued. If they could get the support they needed and the product they were looking for, they didn't want to move to another seller and have to restart that process. The mistakes and disasters, mainly externally generated, gave them a chance to prove their credibility and commitment
BY SALLY TURLEY Farmers from all over the Tablelands gathered in Malanda last week to learn how to improve production outcomes through the inclusion of legumes in their pastures. The field day, organised by Tablelands Pasture Diversity Peer Group Facilitator, Kasmin Brotherton, reviewed results from local trials and included discussions of farmers' personal experiences. Workshop presenter, Bernie English of DAF in Mareeba, told the group, that while legumes did increase protein levels and plant digestibility and reduce fertiliser requirements by nitrogen fixing soils, they weren't always easy to manage. He said farmers had to do everything right if they wanted to establish strong stands of legume in their grasses and maintain them over two to three decades. They needed to work to a timeline, know the varieties of legume that best suit their location, check availability of seed, have all requirements on hand and then monitor paddocks continuously. To achieve the highest chance of success, farmers should load their target paddock up with cattle during winter to graze grasses down to a very low level.
Ravenshoe Avocado grower, Mark Toohey of Buy Avocadoes Online and marketing coordinator Nicki Dyson inspect the 240m rows of the farm's 25 year old avocado orchard that has been transformed into an abundant example of syntropic agoroforesty.
to their customers, who have come back asking what else they can buy from the Toohey family. Mark said that enthusiasm has encouraged them to expand their range. They sold $10,000 worth of pumpkins last year, are working on selling honey in biodegradable packaging and are considering a dried banana product in the near future. In the meantime, Mr Toohey's commitment to a chemical-free farm and regenerative agriculture has continued to grow and he is in the process of converting his entire 809.5ha of lush farming land into a syntropic agoroforestry system. Syntropic farming is about growing fruit, nuts, vegetables and timber together in the same space to replicate the growth that occurs in nature's abundant forests creating a system that generates more energy than has been
They should then mulch any remaining grass down as heavily as possible, repeating the process a few days later if necessary, getting grass down to, or even below soil level to reduce competition with emerging legumes. Ploughing in September/October would eradicate most of the weeds and let the organic process occur by planting time usually in December/January to catch the start of the wet season. Once the paddock had received a minimum of 50mm of rain, planting could begin at double the recommended rate of seed/ha to offset the high attrition rate of young legumes that are shaded out, stepped on by cattle or lost to predators. An application of Sodium Molybdate, (an essential micronutrient for plants and animals) and a 100kg/ha of DAP was recommended at this point to enhance nodule formation and boost growth, particularly in areas south of the Barron River. Then Mr English said, for optimum germination in legumes, it was essential to roll the seed in well, with a Cambridge roller or something similar and ensure there was good seed/soil contact. Once the legumes started to grow, the struggle to contain grass growth began. The paddock must be slashed regularly to guarantee the grass
invested. It was started by Ernst Gotsch in Brazil, when he used it to restore dry and depleted farm land by planting a combination of species that grow to different heights, maximising the use of sunlight at each strata. Mr Toohey has combined eucalypt trees with avocadoes, bananas, ginger plants, turmeric, cassava, pumpkins and tomatoes believing that through the biodiversity of the plants, the soil becomes richer, sequesters carbon and produces plants so packed with nutrition from the rich soil, that no chemicals are required. As the orchard grows, it creates its own environment, from the microbial biome (gut bacteria of the orchard), up to the canopy, increasing humidity within the system and sometimes even leading to increased rainfall. “It is not okay to sell lesser
quality product just because it is organic,” Mr Toohey said. “The only way to go organic and combat weeds is by using large amounts of inputs – compost and organic fertilisers, which have to be brought in." In a wholistic, regenerative syntropic orchard, plants become self-sustaining and protect themselves from pests. “Becoming organic makes you lose your economies of scale. You have to earn the right to be an organic farmer and it has made me an advocate for other producers going through the same process.” But with customers loving the more intense flavours of their avocadoes and last year's supply selling out a month before the end of the season, there will be no turning back for this ‘reluctant food activist.’
Mark Neill of Lake Barrine and Geoff Campbell of Mutchilba were impressed by the quality of the Rankine family’s pasture.
did not outgrow the juvenile legumes and to avoid excessive trash build up from bulk cuttings smothering the new plants. After establishment, cattle should be kept out of the paddock for about 5-6 months, allowing just a gentle graze towards the end of the first year. Normal grazing could resume in the second year, but must be on a one month rotational basis. Cattle would preferentially graze legumes and at an estimated establishment cost of over $400/ha, it was important that farmers looked after their investment. Cheaper home-adapted machinery often worked just as well for those who did not have access to specialised minimum till machinery or rollers.
Owen Brown and daughter Kellie from Kairi checked out a Rattlepod weed specimen, which is considered poisonous to livestock.
Field day organiser Kasmin Brotherton and her husband Tacey were pleased with the good turnout for the field day.

Kisima Garlic grows bumper crop Adam Collins and Gwen Bocci have recently harvested their largest ever crop of Russian and True garlic on their organic and biodynamic farm at Kaban, just outside Ravenshoe.
knew he did not want to work with chemicals. Mr Collin's reverence for the earth drives him to create a 5 star atmosphere for nature on their property. "Using fertilisers makes the grass and crops dependent on us, we become their life support system because we have stuffed up all the earth's natural cycles,” he said. But even with demand for organic garlic growing Australia-wide and their own crop selling out in just three months last year, the Collins' have no plans of expanding their current crop. They are focused on maintaining quality, evolving their flavours and following their personal ethos of “living simply to simply live.”
The smallest 10% of the annual garlic crop bulbs are retained for the next season plant which should get underway in April 2022, while the bigger bulbs are sold to organic retailers throughout North Queensland.
BY SALLY TURLEY Kaban farmer, Adam Collins is on a mission to create the best quality, finest tasting organic and bio-dynamic garlic bulbs it is possible to grow and has spent the last two decades refining the condition of his soils and the flavours of his produce. His dedication paid dividends this year, when along with his partner Gwen Bocci and his father John Collins, they recently harvested their biggest crop of garlic on “Kisima Farm” in 20 years. They picked an impressive 10 tonnes of Russian and True Garlic bulbs from just under a hectare of land. “When growing garlic, the yield is more about the size of the bulbs than it is about a kilo/ hectare basis and the bulbs this year were a very good size. The harvest took us two weeks to
complete and the support we received from the local community was inspiring,” Mr Collins said. “A total of 37 people came and helped us pick the crop off the field and some of those have come back to help with the painstaking job of peeling the bulbs as well. Having help meant we were able to get the crop off and be two weeks into the drying process before the wet arrived, which was very beneficial.” Every bulb was hand planted, hand harvested and inspected, hand peeled and hand cracked before being sold for $30/kg to Tableland, Cooktown, Townsville and Longreach organic retailers. “There is a considerable difference between the harvest weight and the selling weight,” Mr Collins pointed out.
“Garlic out of the paddock doesn't taste like garlic. It has to be stored undercover for 6 to 8 weeks to cure and the cloves shrink as they dry. Garlic has very few predators and can sit for up to a year in storage. “The bulbs need the right ambient temperature and humidity to dry correctly. If they dry too fast, the outside seals and the inside rots. The dry sclerophyll forests around Kaban are ideally suited to growing garlic and the whole process has worked perfectly this year.” In a recent response to consumer demand the Collins’ have started breaking their garlic down to sell in single cloves. “People love the larger Russian variety and in households of 1 or 2 they are sometimes hesitant to buy the full knob of garlic,” Ms Bocci said. While costs are kept to a
minimum in this model of farming, the Collins' have to retain a tonne (or 10%) of bulbs each year as seed stock, to replant their crop and must rotate their paddock use over a 6 to 8 year cycle, planting green manure to increase soil nutrient levels . There was also a constant process of biodynamic soil improvement being carried out. Preparations made from herbal flowers were added to compost heaps to benefit the atmosphere and to animal sheaths which were buried to enhance the health of soils in the paddocks. Sent to boarding school in England at seven years of age, before spending five years at an agricultural university “learning how to kill everything,” Mr Collins spent several years travelling the world looking at farming enterprises to see what excited him, after which he

History re-imagined
An echo of a bygone era and one of Malanda’s oldest homes, believed to be built in the early 1900’s by Jack Prince, a member of one of Malanda’s pioneer families. This residence also served as Malanda’s RSL from the early 1940’s to the mid 1960’s. One block away from Malanda’s Main St. puts you in walking distance of shops, schools, post office and the historic Majestic Theatre. Situated on a 1,129m2 block boasting landscaped gardens designed for privacy. This home has been carefully renovated by a qualified builder. Original refinished rainforest timber floors, vertical joint timber walls and over 3m high ceilings offer a classic sense of Queensland living. Well placed windows throughout the home maintain privacy while providing green garden views and
cool air flow on warm tropical days. Generous open plan living combines a kitchen, dining and lounge space, providing flow and function. Separated by the central living space, the master bedroom and Ensuite are situated to the Northwest and the other two bedrooms to the Southeast. Retreat to one of two sun drenched North facing decks. Relax to the sound of flowing water, overlooking a courtyard garden with water feature or invite family and friends to share a spacious BBQ area. sport Chillemi monopolizes Jewel qualifier With a little bit of planning and a stroke of luck, Tolga horse trainer Roy Chillemi was able to take out first, second, third, fourth and fifth in a six horse race. Racing in the recent Cairns Jockey Club meet on Tuesday, February 23, Mr Chillemi was able to put in five of his horses in the QTIS (Queensland Thoroughbred Incentive Scheme) Jewel Qualifier Three-Year-Old Plate. This caused him to monopolize the top positions and take away four races’ worth of winnings for just one race. Such a situation doesn’t happen often in the racing world but sometimes the stars and the situation align and a trainer is able to put forward multiple horses in one race. Mr Chillemi said that this is not something he often aims for but this time he had the right horses needed for the race. “I’m an old trainer but I train a lot of young horses 85 per cent of my stable consists of young horses,” he said. “It’s like winning four races for one race and if you race in the country it’s like winning eight races. “It’s not easy to do, it’s not something that happens often.” Robig ended up being the winning horse out Mr Chillemi’s five horses scheduled for the race, due to this Robig has qualified for the $300,000 Jewel race on the Gold Coast, if Mr Chillemi decides to send him down to race. last place did not have much of a chance going up against five other horses all running for the same trainer. “If he would have run a place it
wouldn’t have bothered me,” Mr Chillemi said. “I don’t normally aim for this kind of thing but luck just come my way.”
Semi-final loss for Atherton Atherton’s first grade suffered a demoralising loss to Mulgrave in the Cricket Far North elimination final played at Minniecon-Gregory oval on Saturday. While weather looked to be the main threat to a result, Mulgrave's quality bowling attack proved to be Atherton's downfall. Mulgrave elected to bat first in fine but humid conditions and Atherton's opening bowlers got away to a flying start to have the home team reeling at 6-25 in the 12th over. Luke Parnell had a field day
taking 5-19 off his 10 overs with his left arm pace. Seppe Barletta kept the pressure on at the other end completing his spell 1-10. Mulgrave staged a late fightback, sticking it out to post a defendable 107 runs. Dan Parnell 2-31 and Michael Salerno 1-19 were the other wicket takers while Peter Sceresini accounted for one with a run-out. In reply, Atherton's batsmen were put on notice by the Mulgrave quicks from the outset. Dan Parnell went out to a very sharp catch, followed by the contentious dismissal of Paul Nasser. Atherton did not han-

dle the pressure of the situation and continued to lose wickets cheaply, eventually bundled out for 64 runs to end their season on a disappointing note. On a positive note, Paul Nasser will take out the Cricket Far North batting awards with the highest aggregate runs 515 and best average 51.50, whilst also equal third number of wickets taken. Dan Parnell and Tom Boorman finished in the top ten for aggregate runs and Dan equal second for the number of wickets taken. Caleb Constant stepped up to wicket keep this
season and has taken the most catches behind the stumps in the competition this season. Mulgrave now play Rovers in this Saturday’s CFN grand final. The team would like to thank the many volunteers, supporters and club sponsors for seeing them through the season and hope to see you all back next season ready to go one better. Result: Atherton 64 (D Parnell 13, B Nasser 12, C Adams 10) Defeated by Mulgrave 107 (L Parnell 5-19, D Parnell 2-31, S Barletta 1-10, M Salerno 1-19)
States success for Dimbulah swimmers Four members of the Dimbulah Dolphins swimming club have recently competed at the Ronald McDonald House Charity (RMHC) Queensland Sprint Championship in Brisbane with many getting personal bests (PBs). Ally MacLeod, Emma McDermott, Cayde Miller and Nate Mitchell all qualified for the championships and were able to fly down to Brisbane at the beginning of the month. Jack McDermott and Beau Hatfield also qualified but were unable to compete. For Ally and Nate, it was their first time competing at state and they did not let it go to waste both getting PBs for freestyle. Cayde competed and managed to get a new PB on both his freestyle and butterfly and out of three swims Emma was able to
get a new PB in butterfly. Dimbulah Dolphins president and assistant coach Jason McDermott was incredibly proud of the kid’s performances. “They swam brilliantly and beautifully,” he said. “They have trained incredibly hard and consistently through the season and even during their entire holidays break to achieve these impressive results. “It’s inspiring the younger swimmers in the club.” The Dimbulah Dolphins also expressed their thanks to Bendigo Bank and the Dimbulah Lions Club for their donations towards the club’s travel expenses for the trip. The young swimmers enjoyed their experience and are already discussing and preparing for next year’s championships.
