MENACHEMKIPNIS

YiddishFolkloreandPhotographsfromInterwarPoland

Menachem Kipnis

Edited by Sheila E. Jelen

Translated by Raphael Finkel

Menachem Kipnis (1878–1942) was one of the early twentieth-century's greatest Jewish eastern European ethnomusicologists, folklorists, and photographers. He had a weekly column in the Warsaw Yiddish newspaper Haynt, retelling humorous old folk stories about the fictional Polish town of Chelm, populated exclusively by fools. At the same time, his photographs of Jewish life in eastern Europe regularly appeared in the Forverts (Forward), the most popular Yiddish daily newspaper in the United States. Now, for the first time, Kipnis's stories and photographs are published together in a single book. Menachem Kipnis brings these photographs and stories into dialogue with one another, bridging the Jewish communities in Poland and in America during the interwar period. This dialogue, between image and text, between European metropolis and American metropolis, captures a key historical moment when American Jews sought to imagine the lives of their coreligionists in the "Old Country" and eastern European urban Jews sought to distinguish themselves from their Jewish compatriots who were still living in the shtetl. Including an introductory essay, annotations, and an epilogue by Sheila E. Jelen, Menachem Kipnis suggests new ways of understanding both visual and literary depictions of eastern European Jewish culture between the two world wars. 14April2026|186pp|44colourimages 9781978846104|£32.00/$39.95|HB

MEDIEVALEASTCENTRALANDEASTERNEUROPE

Florin Curta & Sebastien Rossignol

From Bohemia to Rus’ and from the White Sea to the Balkans, Medieval East Central and Eastern Europe by Florin Curta and Sébastien Rossignol covers the medieval history of a large area. This groundbreaking textbook is an important introduction for students and an essential tool for instructors of courses on the Middle Ages and the entire eastern half of Europe. With elements of medieval archaeology, Medieval East Central and Eastern Europe includes dynastic characters, political legacies, and a list of suggested readings for anyone interested in learning more about the history of these regions. Written in an accessible style that appeals to a general reader, this textbook explicates the diversity of historical experiences available in these parts of Europe during the Middle Ages – from the influence of Byzantine traditions in the Balkans to the integration of Western cultures and the impact of the Eurasian steppe lands. This text highlights the distinct social and cultural characteristics that shaped these societies, including the persistence of nomadic groups, the limited reach of feudalism, and the enduring presence of pagan, Jewish, and Muslim communities. Structured with chronological overviews and thematic chapters, Medieval East Central and Eastern Europe is an invaluable resource on underrepresented regions for specialists and non-specialists alike.

SECURITYTHROUGHCOOPERATION

Space,NuclearWeapons,andUS-RussiaRelationsaftertheColdWar Rose Gottemoeller

Russian officials and experts often voice the view that the United States was hell-bent on undermining, even destroying Russia during the turbulent period of the Soviet breakup thirty years ago. The primary US goal, in this telling, was to expand NATO to Russia's borders to isolate and threaten the Russian state. Rose Gottemoeller, drawing from the historical record and her own professional experience, refutes this notion. Gottemoeller argues that, to the contrary, successive American presidents were convinced that deep cooperation with Russia is essential to international security and stability. This conviction was born during the George H. W. Bush administration and took definitive shape during the administration of Bill Clinton, when he and his Russian counterpart, Boris Yeltsin agreed to develop technological cooperation that would be useful to both countries. George W. Bush and Vladimir Putin carried the conviction further, and the two countries made enormous strides on cooperation in outer space, counterterrorism, and nuclear energy over the next twenty years. While today is starkly different from the 1990s, Gottemoeller takes the lessons learned and considers what it would take—when Russia exits its horrific adventure in Ukraine and atones for the damage it has done—to resume cooperation for the sake of global security.

April 1917—the fourth node—shows the intractable divisions that would lead Russia to catastrophic Communist dictatorship and civil war. INTHESHADOWOFTHEHOLOCAUST

ShortFictionbyJewishWritersfromtheSovietUnion

Stanford Studies in Jewish History and Culture

A first-of-its kind collection of short stories that provides an underappreciated perspective on the Holocaust, as it was experienced and remembered in the former Soviet Union. A death camp survivor asks a local woman to write down in Russian his story, which he conveys in Yiddish. The Jewish population of Kyiv makes a pilgrimage to the site of a massacre on its anniversary. A single teacup becomes the focal point of a Jewish family's complex history. These are just three of the stories featured in In the Shadow of the Holocaust: Short Fiction by Jewish Writers from the Soviet Union, a collection of newly translated short fiction written in the aftermath of one of the most significant Jewish tragedies of the 20th century. In these works, Jewish authors from Ukraine, Lithuania, Russia, and Belarus, writing in Yiddish and Russian, tell the stories of ordinary people living on after the devastation of the Holocaust. Filled with memories, love, and loss, these narratives describe not only how people died, but also how they continued to live. The voices brought together in In the Shadow of the Holocaust create a distinct chorus of personal, idiosyncratic experiences of loss and provide new perspectives on questions fundamental to literature of the Holocaust, the legacies of genocide, and the nature of historical trauma and memory.

THEMANWHOKNEWRUSSIA

RichardPipes,HumanistandColdWarrior

Jonathan Daly

Stanford–Hoover Series on Authoritarianism

Richard Pipes was a longtime Harvard University professor, historian of Imperial and Soviet Russia, and influential Soviet expert during the Cold War. A towering figure in his field, Pipes produced work that shaped the study of Russian and Soviet history, and he influenced U.S. foreign policy as a public intellectual and political advisor, including as a member of the National Security Council during the Reagan administration. At the same time, Pipes was a controversial figure; his tendency to swim against the intellectual tide and challenge consensus views alienated some colleagues and angered others. In this biography, Daly cuts through the controversy surrounding Pipes to present a nuanced portrait of his life, thinking, and the philosophical and ethical principles that underpinned his work. Placing Pipes' scholarship and political career in the context of Russian studies, U.S.-Soviet relations, and the Cold War, Daly elucidates Pipes' impact, and argues that his broad learning, keen historical judgment, and humanistic approach permitted him to attain a deep understanding of Russia's historical and contemporary development that continues to resonate today.

HACKINGTHEIRONCURTAIN

AMediaArchaeologyoftheRussianInternet

For decades before the internet existed, scientists, technologists, novelists, and enthusiasts of all descriptions dreamed of instantaneous, worldwide communication systems. What forms such systems might take and what technologies could be used to accomplish this goal were open questions—questions asked by people around the world, including in the Cold War–era superpowers of the United States and the Soviet Union. Media archaeologist Natalia Konradova examines the history of the internet in Russia and its predecessor state, cutting through layers of technological history and dusting off conceptual artifacts of the past. Inspired by the fundamental question of how Soviets imagined future technologies, she investigates experiments with telepathy alongside the (then equally improbable) dream of a global, digitally connected computer network. Since the story of the Russian internet is inextricably wound up with Soviet society and the history of the Cold War, Hacking the Iron Curtain is as much a cultural and political history as it is a technological one—a history that illustrates how collective dreams can challenge geopolitical ambitions and inspire worldchanging technologies.
