M TCH THE

The Main Residency Match (“The Match”) is a system for the selection of applicants to residency training programs. The first Main Residency Match was conducted in 1952 when 10,400 internship positions were available for 6,000 US graduating seniors. By 1973, there were 19,000 positions for just over 10,000 US graduating seniors.
After registering for “The Match” and completing interviews, applicants submit to the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) a list of programs, ranked in order of preference, where they wish to train. At the same time, program directors submit to the NRMP a list of applicants, ranked in order of preference, whom they have interviewed and wish to train. A mathematical algorithm is then used to place applicants into residency positions.
The 2025 Match included 52,498 registered applicants, 47,208 of whom submitted program choices for 41,503 total positions, an all-time high. When the matching algorithm processed, 40,764 positions were filled and, of the 2,521 positions offered through the Match Week Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program®, 2,388 were filled, an overall fill rate of 99.4 percent.
