There aren’t many architectural structures that truly say ‘country town’ more than the heritage-listed Surat Shire Hall, with its art-deco design from the 1930s.
Cast a rod and park your home at Fisherman’s Park for a serene retreat along the river. Or set your base up at the Surat Caravan Park to stay right in the centre of town with the local café and pub only a walk away. Sink a line in the Balonne River from the Surat Riverside Parklands to try your luck at catching Murray Cod and Golden Perch.
A unique community memorial honouring the men and women of Surat who enlisted in war. Each soldier is represented as a leaf on the tree, celebrating their service and sacrifice.
Enjoy a tranquil stroll along the river at Surat Riverland Parklands from Fisherman’s Park to the Surat Weir. Keep your eyes peeled and try and spot any of the 38 species of bird that can be found in and around Surat including the magnificent wedge-tailed eagle.
A homage to the Mandandanji Aboriginal community which showcases life in Surat for many Aboriginal families throughout the 1900’s, including a look at a traditional Aboriginal ‘Humpy’.


In 1921, residents in the Surat district were still receiving their mail via the Cobb & Co Coach, while residents in other remote locations such as Longreach, were receiving their mail via aeroplane!

The Wheat Shed
The Wheat Shed houses the Visitor Information Centre, library, and much-loved Calico Cottage. Named to honour the region’s rich agricultural heritage, it’s the perfect stop for visitor info as you journey west.

Visit Pickanjinnie, a creative tortoise monument honouring its Aboriginal name meaning ‘place of land and water where the tortoise goes’.

Surat to Yuleba | 76km
Relive the last journey of an Australian icon, the Cobb & Co Coach Service.
This drive trail offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of early settlers and the adventures of passengers who travelled by coach.
Discover history, stunning landscapes, and the spirit of Australia’s pioneering past along the way.
1. From the Cobb & Co Changing Station, head north along the Carnarvon Highway towards Roma for 2.2km.
2. Turn right onto Frogmoor Road and continue for 9.2km, stopping at the historical sites of the Corduroys and Frogmoor.
3. Turn right at the intersection onto Yuleba-Surat Road.
4. Continue on Yuleba-Surat Road, stopping at the historical sites of Bainbilla Changing Station, Waldegrave Changing Station, the Native Wells, and many more along the way.
5. After continuing along the Yuleba-Surat Road for 65.6km (making sure to follow road signs – this road overlaps with Roma Condamine Road for 1.7km), veer right onto Stephenson Street.
6. In 800m at the intersection, turn left onto Perry Street.
7. End your drive at Cobb & Co Park on the corner of the Warrego Highway and Perry Street, Yuleba.
This drive includes both sealed and unsealed sections of the road. Sections of this road may not be suitable for caravans.

Calling 4WD enthusiasts – it’s time to hit the tracks! Enjoy everchanging landscapes, see the native wildlife, and marvel at the ancient beauty of pre-historic Grass Trees on this offroad journey.
1. Head north from the traffic lights at the corner of McDowall and Quintin Streets, Roma, for 6.3km.
2. Turn right onto Burtons Road and follow for 7.2km.
3. When the road splits, continue left onto Daisy Bank Road for 9.9km.
4. Turn right onto the Roma-Taroom Road and follow for 7.2km.
5. Turn left onto Grafton Terrace (unsealed for 16km) and continue for 16km,see the Grass Trees at 7.6km.
6. Turn left onto West Myall Road and follow for 16.9km.
7. Turn left onto Eumamurrin Road and follow for 1.8km.
8. Turn right to Injune and discover the perfect base to discover Carnarvon Gorge.
Please be aware as parts of this road are quite sandy, this journey is suitable only for high clearance/4WD vehicles and should only be taken when the road is dry.
Sections of this road may not be suitable for caravans.

Arrive in Roma on Monday afternoon and take some time to settle into your accommodation before exploring the town and soaking in the relaxed Outback atmosphere. As the sun sets, make your way to The Big Rig for their Night Show, a fascinating introduction to Roma’s oil and gas history.
Day 2:
Start your day with a visit to the Roma Saleyards, the largest cattleselling facility in Australia. Join a free guided tour led by local cattle industry experts and experience the buzz of the live cattle auctions.
Day 3:
Make your way to Injune, your base for exploring the Outback’s natural beauty. Choose from a range of day trips to Arcadia Valley, the Carnarvon Ranges, Mt Moffatt, or Lake Nuga Nuga. If you prefer a slower pace, stay in town and delve into Injune’s history. Visit the Injune Museum, visit the Characters of Injune along the main street, or simply enjoy the local charm.
Grab a delicious breakfast and coffee at Café on Second before heading west to Mitchell where you’ll find an Outback oasis in the Great Artesian Spa – stop in for a rejuvenating soak in the water. Uncover the town’s history at the Booringa Heritage Museum and the Kenniff Court House. Wrap up your day with a tranquil sunset stroll along the picturesque Maranoa River Walk.
Day 5:
Detour via Dunkeld Road for some scenic country roads towards Surat. Explore the Cobb & Co Changing Station and create your own fish design at the interactive aquarium, before spending the afternoon by the Balonne River where you can relax, fish, or simply take in the serene surroundings.
Day 6:
Pack your bags for a busy day as you take the historic Cobb & Co Way from Surat to Yuleba. Stop in for a pub lunch from the Yuleba Hotel, then a break rock hunting and fishing at Judd’s Lagoon. On the road back to Roma, stop in at the Calico Cottage for a sweet baked treat and a cuppa, before completing your journey in Roma.

Surat
Locals will tell you that Balonne River provides some of the best fishing. Situated along the river, Fisherman’s Park weir provides the perfect opportunity to to set up your rods and try your luck.
Yuleba
Pull out the camp chair on the banks of Yuleba Creek for pristine fishing conditions. Along the creek you’ll find the Old Yuleba Fishing Hole, a charming spot to try for a catch without other tourists on your line. If a lagoon is more your style, pack the rod and head to Judd’s Lagoon for your chance to catch yellow belly.
Mitchell
Spend the day kayaking along the Maranoa River just outside Mitchell, where you’ll find top fishing spots like Fisherman’s Rest (complete with a boat ramp and picnic tables) and Neil Turner Weir, where yellowbelly are ripe for the catching. Better still, the weir has a BBQ ready for you to cook up your freshly caught dinner right on the banks of the river.
