Welcome to the September edition of Bottle Tree Connect, Maranoa Regional Council’s community eNewsletter! In this monthly edition, you can catch up on some of the things that’s been happening across the region including some major upcoming events, Council’s new planning platform, bin day changes, a facility upgrade in Surat and more! COUNCILLOR CORNER Welcome to the Councillor Update. It’s that time of year when winter turns to summer experiencing a short period of fantastic weather. From my portfolio point of view, it also sees the winding down of the winter sports season and the start of the summer seasons. Netball and rugby league finals are in full swing with presentation days occurring over the next few weeks. It would be remiss of me not to mention in this update the rates notices have been issued due for payment by 18 September, 2026. If you are having difficulties with any aspect of your rates notice don’t hesitate to contact Council by visiting your local Customer Service Centre or call 1300 007 662. Councillors are currently Out and About discussing Budget and regional matters including rates with communities across the region. The entrance to the town of Roma, already abuzz with tourists and locals visiting the must-see Sculptures Out Back display (through to end of September), will become even busier with the Santos Festival of Rugby on 18-19 of this month. Council is supporting this event and the new look Street Festival on the Friday afternoon featuring Radio Club Band on the main stage. Saturday will see the rugby action culminating in the Reds v Waratahs (men’s and ladies matches) at Gallas Fox Park. On another note, works to the Sculptures Out Back precinct and the RDCA Colts cricket venue have been approved for upgrades. Both these upgrades will brighten up the entrance to the town of Roma. From the Sport & Recreation perspective, the Council is excited that four Maranoa region projects have been listed for the next stage of the QLD Government “Games On” funding projects. The four projects are the Injune BMX track project as part of the Gwydir Laycock Park upgrade, the Roma Clay Target upgrade to an International Standard complex, Roma Touch Football lighting upgrade to their facility to enhance summer sports at the complex and Cities Rugby League Football have submitted new lighting project to enhance their second oval and cater for the increase in junior activities on that oval. Council staff are working with these organisations to give them every opportunity to progress to the next funding stage. All sporting organisations seeking to upgrade their facilities are reminded that Round 127 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund is now open, with applications closing on 28 September. September, October, November is race meeting Cup time with the Surat Cup on 12 September, Mitchell Booringa Cup on 16 October, and Roma Cup on 21 November. While the racing is always first class, each event has a fantastic “Fashions on the Field” promotion for the fashionistas to add to a great social atmosphere. Our Surat and Injune clubs will benefit from recent Racing Queensland Infrastructure Grant upgrade announcements and Injune have again been awarded a Battle of the Bush race to complement their Injune Cup program in June 2027. A big thank you from the industry for the work of Injune Race Club President Keith Chandler who at the recent AGM stepped down after over 20 years in the role. Horse sports have been very much to the fore with campdrafts at Injune and Surat having outstanding support from competitors alongside local community organisations organising activities and catering. The Wallumbilla/Yuleba area has not been idle either with Council offering support for design upgrades to the Showground Complex, something that the community and Council have been trying to ascertain funding for many years now. The Yuleba Blue Light shed gym project has also received funding and will complement the very popular Water Play Park and pump track that were opened last year. The Roma Saleyards has been a hive of activity to start this financial year with massive numbers being put through the yards as well as the September Bull selling season. The Saleyards receiving national recognition for the record turnover in 2025/2026 financial year. Currently works are taking place on bituminising the truck parking area, a bit of short-term pain for a massive, long-term gain for the trucking industry that will alleviate the dust problem that has been evident in recent dry times. Community Events Assistance Round 3 Council approved Round 3 of the Events Assistance Program, supporting a great mix of local events across the region. Queensland Government Notice of Extension to the Regulation Passenger Transport Contract Roma to Brisbane (Central 1 Route) Council has been informed that the Queensland Government has extended the regulated air service into Roma through to Friday, 31 December 2027 meaning the State’s regulated aviation service contract is pushing to now extend beyond Council’s existing partnership agreement with Rex Airlines, which is due to expire on Thursday, 31 December 2026.

As a Council, we will continue to keep strongly advocating for the next tender process to start by December 2026 so there’s certainty for our community and no further extension is considered. Development Application - Material Change of Use "Caretaker's Accommodation" - 90-92 Chrystal Street, Roma Council has approved a development application for caretaker’s accommodation at 90–92 Chrystal Street in Roma. The application went through the required public notification process, no submissions were received, and it was assessed as generally consistent with the Planning Act and the Maranoa Planning Scheme. Application through Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) Program 2026/2027 Council has approved $1,200 through the Regional Arts Development Fund to support the Bymount Creative Circle workshop with Ruth McAllister set to take place from Friday to Monday, 25-28 September this year. It’s great to back local creative opportunities like this and support arts activities in our community.
Reminder: Australia Day Awards Open Now Who in the Maranoa has made an outstanding impact this year? Honour them and celebrate their achievements by nominating them for an Australia Day Award before Saturday, 31 October. NEWS FOR OUR RESIDENTS Roma & Surat: Bin Day Change Maranoa Regional Council advises that bin collection days will change in Surat and parts of Roma from Monday, 28 September 2026. A new timetable will apply, and residents should check the maps provided to confirm their collection day. The changes, introduced following a trial by Council’s service provider JJ Richards, aim to improve efficiency through revised collection zones and routes. We’re thrilled to announce the return of Bark in the Park on Saturday, 3 October 2026 at the newly upgraded Roma Dog Park! Get ready for a tail-wagging day filled with fun, local stalls, exciting competitions, and a working dog demonstration by star of ABC’s ‘Muster Dogs’ program and agricultural influencer Renee Spencer (@Brownhatttt). It is sure to be a celebration of our furry friends! Cr Amber Davis, Portfolio for Community Safety, says: "Bark in the Park is a fantastic event, not just for your pets, but for owners too. Surat Shire Hall upgrade delivers year-round comfort for community Surat’s much-loved Shire Hall is now a more comfortable place for community events and activities following the completion of a major airconditioning upgrade. The project has delivered a new reverse-cycle airconditioning system throughout the Hall, providing improved heating and cooling and ensuring the facility can be comfortably used by the community throughout the year. The new reverse-cycle system has been carefully installed to minimise impacts on the character and heritage requirements of the building. READ MORE
Development searches now easier Maranoa residents now have an easier way to view and access local development information with the launch of Council’s new online planning platform. The new local development search, Development.i, provides residents with an online, self-service portal, allowing access to past and current development application details and basic property information for the Maranoa Local Government area. This information has always been available to the public, but the new portal will provide easier access to that information for residents. READ MORE
Maranoa’s youth mark their artistic flair Roma’s Adungadoo Pathway just got better thanks to a youth-led mural. A group of 27 inspired teenagers with a zest for art showcased their artistic flair in the community, reaching beyond the Chaos Art Club windows. With this dream and passion, the decision to beautify the Adungadoo Pathway Arthur Street underpass with a mural was born. Council was proud to support the Chaos Art Club with this initiative in the Thursday, 11 June 2026 Ordinary Council Meeting. READ MORE

Council has a great mix of activities planned across the Maranoa, with opportunities to make, create, learn and have some fun along the way. Find your rhythm at an African Drumming Workshop, get hands-on at our Clay Making Workshop, or learn how to capture the perfect shot at a Photography Workshop. Young photographers can also enter our competition for the chance to win a prize and have their work displayed as part of the Walk of Art in Roma and at the Surat on Balonne Gallery. And that's not all! Our libraries have plenty more happening throughout the September school holidays. Saleyards partners with LifeFlight in support of Cash Cow Campaign Roma Saleyards was proud to welcome LifeFlight Australia to the facility during the month of June as the organisation conducted its LifeFlight Cash Cow Campaign. Through the support of generous donors, a total of $58,000 was raised. Twenty-six donors contributed to the campaign by donating a beast, giving a fixed amount or donating a percentage of their sales. In support and promotion of the life-saving cause, the Saleyards waived the fees on donation lots throughout the month of the campaign. “Council was proud to play a role in the LifeFlight Cash Cow Campaign and to support LifeFlight Australia as it continues to provide lifesaving care for regional South West Queensland,” said Mayor Wendy Taylor.

Street Party to kick off 2026 Santos Festival of Rugby The Santos Festival of Rugby will be bigger and better than ever with the event kicking off on Roma’s McDowall Street on Friday, 18 September 2026 with a free Street Party. Serving as the curtain raiser the street party will kick off at 4:30pm with food trucks, extended opening hours for some of our local businesses, live entertainment, and last but not least, over 100 male and female players from Queensland Reds and NSW Waratahs. Across the following super Saturday, the Festival of Rugby will have plenty of football action for the whole community. READ MORE
Roma Saleyards backs RFDS charity sales this September The Roma Saleyards is pleased to announce it will welcome back the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) (RFDS) charity sales in September 2026. The RFDS provides aeromedical retrieval services, along with primary and preventive healthcare services, to regional, rural and remote Queenslanders. Throughout September, Council is encouraging the community to help keep the RFDS flying across regional southwest Queensland by: donating a beast giving a fixed amount donating a percentage of a sale READ MORE
Rates notices reminder
Maranoa residents should now have received their 2026 rates notice, covering the period from 1 July to 31 December 2026. If you have not yet received your notice please contact Council as soon as possible. A 5% discount on general rates applies where all rates, charges and arrears are paid in full by Friday, 18 September 2026. Residents can also choose to receive future rates notices by email by completing Council's Request to Receive Rates Notices Electronically form online. When making payments electronically or by mail, please allow enough time for processing so you don't miss the discount deadline. If you are experiencing financial hardship, contact Council to discuss available payment arrangement options. READ MORE
Desex Your Pets - Vouchers Available Desexing vouchers are still available for responsible pet owners across the Maranoa. Each voucher is valued at $150, helping reduce the cost of having your cat or dog desexed. There is a limit of one voucher per household, with vouchers redeemable at Maranoa Veterinary Surgery and Roma Vet Clinic.

Taking the time to ask “Are you OK?”, listen and genuinely connect can help someone feel supported and remind them they don’t have to navigate a difficult day alone. RURAL LANDS Invasive Plant: Mother of Millions Mother of millions is an invasive succulent plant that threatens grazing land and native ecosystems. It is highly toxic to livestock and declared a category 3 invasive plant under the Biosecurity Act 2014. It grows up to 1m tall sometimes taller and produces distinctive orange/red bell-shaped flowers during winter. Mother of millions commonly invades roadsides, fence lines, woodlands, grasslands and disturbed areas. It spreads through floodwater, animals, machinery, vehicles, and dumped garden waste. Spotlight Moment: Colour Takes Centre Stage There has been plenty of action – and colour – onsite this month, as some of the Denise Spencer Aquatic Centre’s most distinctive features have started to take their place. Two large cranes have been busy across the site in the last two weeks, lifting shade sail columns and structures into position around the 50-metre pool, while installation has also commenced on the bright new water play features within the splash pad. These are some of the finishing touches that will give the new centre its character, transforming the construction site into the vibrant, family-friendly aquatic facility the community will soon enjoy. And the fun doesn’t stop there – with the waterslide supports now complete and the slides being assembled offsite, installation of the four new waterslides is set to commence from early September.
