Welcome to the June edition of Bottle Tree Connect, Maranoa Regional Council’s community eNewsletter!
In this monthly edition, you can catch up on some of the things that’s been happening across the region including baiting program sessions, a chance to have your say on the Injune Visitor Information Centre playground, annual pet registrations and more!

With the end of the financial year almost here, like the region, Council is working hard. Out in the community the teams are finishing off this year's projects, while strategically we are putting together next year's plans and budget to be adopted on 25 June 2026
A number of councillors recently attended Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) Bush Councils Convention in Longreach, joining other rural councils, Ministers and Director Generals to discuss shared challenges and opportunities.
Topics varied from how we can easily improve access for the Royal Flying Doctor Service at some of our airports to advocating for increased State Government funding for water infrastructure renewal - an ongoing challenge for councils with a limited rate base.
For me, it was an additional opportunity to advocate for more access into our national parks and raise concerns with the Chief Biosecurity Officer over breaches with the tick line. From a portfolio view, tourism has experienced a particularly slow start this season, with visitation to our Visitor Centres down 30% due to fuel uncertainty and price.
Council has launched a new digital marketing campaign, ‘Where the Locals Still Give You a Wave’, to ensure our region remains front of mind for travellers planning their next getaway. This campaign is a fun, interactive way our community can share our country hospitality.

The Waste and Environmental Health team continues to work through requirements to migrate all our facilities to compliant waste transfer operations, as per State Government legislation.

An expression of interest will be released shortly seeking interested individuals or community groups in some locations to open and close transfer facilities each day With current waste collection contracts due to expire on 30 June 2026, Council recently accepted the tender of JJ Richard's Pty Ltd.
With no current contract holders submitting a tender, I would like to thank our outgoing waste collection operators for the wonderful service they have provided. An essential service that rarely gets acknowledged but is intrinsic to our everyday lives
Looking ahead, kerb and channel replacement is planned for Third Avenue in Injune, along with completion of the western side of Arthur Street in Roma between Twine and Raglan Streets
The new footpath through Sculptures Out Back is also progressing well, with the design now largely finalised and the project well positioned for construction following this year's event.

COUNCIL MEETING SNAPSHOT
May Street Wallumbilla
Council has given in principle support to rename the western end of May Street Wallumbilla, to Hembrow Street Acting on residents' concerns around how confusing it can be to find May Street in Wallumbilla, particularly for emergency services, this decision is a step to fixing this issue for the long term. The Hembrow name recognizes Former Chairman of Bendemere Shire, Rowland Hembrow who served his community from 1933 to 1949, a period of history that saw our region live through the Great Depression and postWorld War 2.
From here council will consult directly with affected residents about the renaming and what our next steps are.
Maranoa Regional Youth Council Terms of Reference
Council has adopted the Terms of Reference for the Maranoa Regional Youth Council and will begin engaging with local school principals to establish this exciting initiative This is a great step towards empowering youth leadership in our region
Endorsement of the Events Assistance Program: Round 2
Council has approved funding through Round 2 of the Events Assistance Program to support local events like Creative Injune’s Biggest Morning Tea, Injune in June, Begonia Golf and Sports Club’s art workshop and the Injune Race Club’s Annual Race Meet. We’re also recognising volunteers across 12 communities during National Volunteer Week, which is taking place around Australia this week. It’s all about supporting our region’s incredible community spirit.
Adoption of Maranoa Visitor Economy Strategy 2026-2035
Council has adopted the Maranoa Visitor Economy Strategy 2026–2035, a collaborative plan to grow our region’s visitor economy and drive prosperity. This strategy sets the foundation for future initiatives to boost tourism and regional development.
Short-term tourism activation and marketing campaigns in response to fuel crisis
Council has endorsed a $15,000 digital marketing campaign to support tourism across the Maranoa during the ongoing fuel concerns. Running throughout June and July, this campaign will showcase local deals and promote the Maranoa as an affordable, welcoming destination for visitors. It’s another example of how Council continues to support our local businesses and economy during challenging times
Establishment of Strategic Steering Committee | Major Resource and Energy Projects
Recognizing the magnitude of opportunities that the Taroom Trough development presents, along with resource and energy projects, Council has established a Major Resource and Energy Projects Strategic Advisory Committee This committee will oversee and align major developments across the Maranoa region.
Tender Award 26015: Request for Tender for the Delivery of Kerbside Waste Collection Services
Council has awarded the kerbside waste collection contract for the Maranoa region to JJ Richards Pty Ltd. This ensures reliable and efficient waste services for our community, with the contract now ready to be finalised and executed.

School holidays warming up
Get ready for a fun-filled June–July School Holiday Program packed with activities for young people across the Maranoa From giant inflatables and swimming adventures to creative workshops, cooking classes and recreational activities, there wil be something for everyone to enjoy Highlights include the Giant Inflatable Afternoon featuring a 50m Ninja Warrior Course and obstacle courses, a Great Artesian Spa Swim and Morning Tea, healthy cooking classes with nutritionists from South West Hospital and Health Service, and regional STORM Co activities, bringing outdoor games, crafts, singing and fun to communities across the Maranoa

Register Your Pets - Registrations are Due Now
From Monday, 1 June 2026, residents will begin to receive their annual dog and cat registration renewals for the 2026/27 financial year. Registration renewals are due by Tuesday, 30 June 2026. A secure online payment portal is available allowing registration payments to be made with a credit card. Visit Council's website and click the 'Make a Payment' tab. Visit the Maranoa - Where the locals still give you a wave
The Maranoa Regional Council is putting out a call to travellers this June and July – just down the road - where the locals still give you a wave! Council is pleased to be working with local businesses, tourism operators and the friendly faces around the community to encourage travellers and tourists to make their stop the Maranoa as they embark on their next adventure. Following a slower than usual start to the tourist season accounting for the ongoing fuel crisis, the Maranoa is here to say we are just down the road! With fuel supply and endless opportunities, the Maranoa encourages interstate travellers to pay a visit to towns in the regional to visit the attractions, take in the outback vistas and enjoy the genuine friendliness and hospitality that our communities have to offer

Show season was upon the region this month with the three major town shows providing residents, friends, family and visitors alike grand enjoyment and entertainment
The Wallumbilla Show started May off strong as it took place from 1-2 May, Roma followed from 7-9 May, then Mitchell from 11 - 12 May. Maranoa Regional Council is proud to be a key supporter of these events

Cr O'Neil, Cr Seawright, Leslie Cormack and Lorraine Cormack, MP Ann Leahy and MP John-Paul Langbroek after having presented Leslie and Lorraine with their life membership for the many years of dedication and volunteering for the Wallumbilla A&P Association.

People got competitive and put their strength to the test during Tug-o-War at the Roma Show.
Winter Blanket Appeal encompasses the warmth and compassion of the Maranoa
Maranoa Regional Council would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who was involved in the 2026 Winter Blanket Appeal, which will provide community members with warmth during the cooler months.
Held throughout the month of May and concluding on Friday, 29 May, there was over 350 new and clean, pre-loved blankets donated across the region.
Councillors and Council’s employees came together to collate blanket boxes which will be distributed to those in need in early June.

Council says a heartfelt thank you to the region’s volunteers!
Maranoa volunteers were treated to morning teas, a dinner and a breakfast across five towns in the Maranoa in celebration of National Volunteer Week, 18 – 24 May.
Throughout the course of the complimentary Council-hosted events held in Surat, Wallumbilla, Injune, Mitchell and Roma, volunteers were able to share their experiences, connect with others, and inspire even more individuals to become involved in volunteering
Mayor Wendy Taylor said that National Volunteer Week was a special week for the Maranoa. “Thank you to our volunteers – you play an incredibly special role in our community, thank you for your efforts and for the energy, time and care that you give.”

Council sincerely thanks all residents who participated in the recent Cemeteries Masterplan Have Your Say survey
Your ongoing contribution plays a vital role in preserving these spaces for current and future generations
Across all feedback received, several consistent themes emerged. The community identified priorities including additional shaded seating and shelter, improved accessibility and footpaths, clearer signage and wayfinding, fencing improvements (particularly where wildlife management is required) and ongoing maintenance and beautification enhancements. There was also strong interest in better access to burial records and historical information.

Maranoa’s Small Businesses celebrated
Small businesses right across the Maranoa were celebrated and recognised right across May in honour of Queensland Small Business Month. During May, Council thanked our small businesses through a special showcase on three local businesses working on a major project - the Denise Spencer Aquatic Centre along with a major eventa Small Business ‘AI Made Simple’ workshop featuring the one and only, Tracey Sheen
The workshop held on 29 May attracted over 60 attendees who learnt how to take AI on another level, learning skills and tips they can implement in their business to build a stronger future

Roma Saleyards beef it up for LifeFlight
The Roma Saleyards is excited to announce that it will be welcoming back LifeFlight Australia as beneficiary of its charity sale this June for LifeFlight Cash Cow Month.
During this month, Council is encouraging people to help keep lifesaving care flying for regional Southwest Queensland through a number of ways:

Give a fixed amount
Donate a percentage
The Roma Saleyards will waive fees on donations throughout June in support and promotion of this life-saving cause.
Please contact your preferred selling agent if you would like to participate in this year’s LifeFlight charity sale Please note that all beasts offered for sale must meet the required standards. Animals that do not comply with animal welfare standards will not be permitted for inclusion.
Adults, the libraries are calling!
A series of Digital & You programs will take place across the region in Injune, Surat, Mungallala, Roma, Mitchell and Wallumbilla From virtual reality to funky art, 3D printing and drones, these are activities all adults will enjoy. Maranoa Libraries are mixing it up in the labs with school holiday science fun!
With STEM activities happening across the region, there is something for everyone to capture your interest and spark your creative juices. Edison robots will be Sumo-wrestling it out with the help of Lego in Wallumbilla and Roma. It is time for take-off in Injune and Mitchell with ‘Wind Things’ - a fun-filled series of flight construction activities
Last but not least, Surat will be blowing-it-up with Bubbleology, a time where kids and teenagers alike will turn into scientists to discover the secret bubble recipie

Spotlight Moment:
The pace of progress at the Denise Spencer Aquatic Centre has become even more visible over the past month, with the facility rapidly taking shape now that major underground and structural works are complete.
Comparing aerial images from the end of April to the end of May highlights just how quickly the site is transforming. In only a few weeks, the entry and amenities building envelope has been completed, including final foundation and flooring works, erection of both structural steel and lightweight steel and significant progress of the roofing works The 50m pool area has also visibly advanced, including pool tiling works over 50% complete, and the grandstand and surrounding structures taking shape What has largely been a structural construction site is now unmistakably becoming a recognisable aquatic facility for the community As more of the building emerges above ground, the scale and layout of the centre can now be fully appreciated from above an exciting sign of the momentum carrying the project forward.

One of my most memorable moments was seeing an athlete with Down syndrome-whom I had coached for over 10 years-compete at the World Championships, win gold, and break a world record The pure joy of him leaping into my arms knocking us both to the ground in celebration is something I will never forget

Thank You
Thank you to Maranoa Regional Council for your support of the event and for Councillor Flynn and Tony Klein attending across the weekend for Round 3 of the Sunshine State MX Series. Their attendance and support of regional sport was greatly appreciated by both Motorcycling Queensland and the Roma & Districts Motorcycle Club. The weekend was a fantastic success, with approximately 380 bikes on track across the two-day event and competitors and families travelling from across Queensland, interstate and internationally to attend. Based on entries, families, support crews, officials and spectators, we estimate the event brought well over 1,500 people through the venue and local region across the weekend, providing a strong boost to the local economy through accommodation, dining, fuel and general tourism
The Roma & Districts Motorcycle Club did an outstanding job presenting the venue, with many positive comments received regarding both the facility and the hospitality shown throughout the weekend The township itself was also highly praised by travelling competitors and families, with many enjoying the opportunity to explore the region and experience the beautiful country and welcoming community atmosphere Roma has to offer From a racing perspective, the event produced excellent competition across all classes, with the black soil circuit creating technical racing conditions and some great battles throughout the weekend.
