Australia Day Award Nominations Open Now!
Who in the Maranoa has made an outstanding impact in the Maranoa this year? Honour them and celebrate their achievement by nominating them for an Australia Day Award before 31 October. Mayor Wendy Taylor encourages residents to nominate community members who they think deserve recognition. “There are some amazing people across the Maranoa who go that extra mile,” Mayor Wendy Taylor said.
There are a variety of categories for 2027 including: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Contribution Award, Community Organisation Award, Cultural Contribution Award, Sports Award, Junior Sports Award and the Andrea Murray Memorial Award. COUNCILLOR CORNER Welcome to the August update. With a change in the weather just around the corner, I thought it was a good time to reflect on our very successful Winter School Holiday Program, organised by our wonderful Local Development and Community Support team Jane, Jess, Gwen, Jacob, Kim, Maricris and Holly from SWIN. The team went above and beyond to deliver a program the children will remember for a long time. A big thank you to everyone involved on behalf of the community. Some of the highlights: The Giant Inflatable Day attracted around 250 to 300 young people to Bassett Park in Roma, with families travelling from across the region to attend. I was fortunate to see the event firsthand, and it was terrific to watch how much the children enjoyed themselves. STORMCo also visited several communities throughout the Maranoa. As well as helping to deliver the holiday program, the group generously assisted elderly residents with yard maintenance and supported community groups with small projects across our towns. Council and the wider community are very grateful for their efforts. Our local libraries were also busy, hosting a range of activities and workshops covering science, reading, arts and crafts, programming and NAIDOC Week. Cooking classes were held with the support of the South West Hospital and Health Service nutrition team. I joined the cooking masterclass at the Mitchell Retirement Wing, where we whipped up some bubble and squeak with the local children. I do not think I will be giving up my bus run just yet, though! A bus also travelled to the Great Artesian Spa in Mitchell for morning tea and a swim in the hot artesian water. Our bush kids are very fortunate to have access to such a great range of activities, and I think it is safe to say the school holidays were an enormous success. It’s great to see things moving along behind the scenes on the establishment of the Maranoa Youth Council, which was endorsed by Council in May. This will be a fantastic opportunity for young people to have a real voice in our community.
The Youth Council will act as an advisory group, giving local young people the chance to share their ideas, raise issues that matter to them, and help shape decisions that affect the region. If you’re aged 12 to 18 and keen to get involved, I’d encourage you to keep an eye on Council news for upcoming expressions of interest. It’s a great chance to represent young people in Maranoa and make a meaningful contribution to your community. Another major project covering both of my portfolios, Youth and Utilities (Water, Sewerage and Gas), is the Denise Spencer Aquatic Centre. Following the Ordinary Meeting on 29 July, I joined Council staff to film the progress being made at the facility. The impressive kilometres of pipework for water, sewerage, stormwater, chlorine will allow the Aquatic Centre keep functioning. It is an impressive undertaking, and many different trades are working together to bring the project to life. Other notable achievements over recent months include the considerable work and community consultation undertaken for our local strategies. Council recently endorsed the Arts and Culture Strategy and the Sport and Recreation Strategy at the Ordinary Meeting on 29 July, with work also progressing on the Economic Development Strategy. Wall of Fame Inductee for Consideration Council is proud to approve the inclusion of Ritchie Lucht and Jed Price on the Maranoa Wall of Fame at the PCYC. The Wall of Fame recognises local athletes who have represented Australia at the highest level in their sport. Ritchie has achieved outstanding success in BMX Racing, including representing Australia at the UCI BMX World Championships. Jed has also delivered exceptional results in duathlon, including becoming a World Champion while representing Australia. Their dedication, talent and achievements make them both deserving additions to the Maranoa Wall of Fame. Congratulations to the inductees. Adoption of Maranoa Sport and Recreation Strategy 2026-2035 Council has adopted the Maranoa Sport and Recreation Strategy 2026–2035, an important step in planning for the future of sport and recreation across our region. This strategy provides a clear framework to support healthy lifestyles, strengthen community connections, and contribute to local economic activity. It has been developed through a thorough process, aligned with Council priorities and broader planning frameworks. From here, Council officers will move into action planning to help deliver the strategy’s key priorities.

Adoption of Maranoa Arts and Culture Strategy 2026-2035 Council has given the green light to the Maranoa Arts and Culture Strategy 2026 to 2035 - a plan that’s all about backing the creative life of our region. From visual arts and performance to heritage, storytelling and digital media, this strategy recognises how important arts and culture are in bringing people together and shaping community identity. It’s been developed with the future in mind, and the next step is turning those ideas into action with the help of local stakeholders. Approval of 2026 Selective Inspection Program Council approved the 2026 Selective Inspection Program, this annual initiative is focused on dog registration and regulated dog requirements across the region. The program is designed to support responsible pet ownership, maintain accurate registration records, and help improve community safety. It also takes a balanced approach, with a strong focus on education and voluntary compliance all while allowing enforcement where required. If you would like further information about the program keep an eye out on our social media platforms and Councils website over the coming weeks.

NEWS FOR OUR RESIDENTS Roma Saleyards achieves sales milestone in 2025/26 financial year The Roma Saleyards has closed the 2025/26 financial year with another outstanding result, recording 362,051 head sold through the facility across 12 months and cattle sales valued at a record $554 million. Throughout the year, cattle from across Queensland and interstate were consigned through the Roma Saleyards, reinforcing the facility's position as Australia's largest cattle selling centre.

Council calls for stallholder applications for 2026 Bark in the Park Maranoa Regional Council is calling for expressions of interest from businesses keen to secure a market stall at Bark in the Park, the community’s paw-some celebration for dog lovers and their furry friends. Bark in the Park will be held 10:00am – 12:30pm Saturday, 3 October, and draws together Roma and the wider Maranoa’s pooches for a fantastic community day at the Roma Dog Park. During the day our furry friends are celebrated with fun competitions and entertainment, including a working dog demonstration by star of ABC’s ‘Muster Dogs’ program and agricultural influencer Renee Spencer (@Brownhatttt). Whether you have a business, service or product that aligns with the Bark in the Park, Council would love to hear from you. Your local Councillors are hitting the road to connect with communities across the region following adoption of the 2026-27 Budget. Come along to a community information forum near you to meet your Councillors, ask questions, and learn more about what’s planned for your local area and the wider Maranoa region.
“The 2026/27 budget returns Council to an operating surplus while continuing to invest in the roads, facilities and essential services our communities rely on. It is a practical plan for today, with a clear focus on the Maranoa’s long-term future,” Mayor Taylor said. Maranoa residents are encouraged to keep an eye on their mailboxes with rate notices being issued to ratepayers this August/September. Maranoa officially welcomes 27 new Aussies Over the past 6 months, Maranoa Regional Council welcomed 27 residents as they officially became Australian Citizens. Both citizenship ceremonies, held on 29 July and 15 April were buzzing with excitement. Friends, families and colleagues gathered in support to celebrate this special night with them as they recited their vows, sang the Australian National Anthem and enjoyed some refreshments with their fellow citizenship recipients. “I welcome you as citizens of Australia and congratulate you on your decision to take up Australian citizenship,” said Mayor Taylor. 2026 Selective Inspection Program Council would like to announce that they will be conducting a Selective Inspection Program from 1 September to 30 November 2026. Inspections will occur between the hours of 7:30am and 5:00pm Monday to Friday, or at such a time depending on the circumstances of the householder in the following towns throughout the region: Amby, Injune, Jackson, Mitchell, Muckadilla, Mungallala, Roma, Surat, Wallumbilla and Yuleba. Authorised persons may visit, and if necessary, enter yards where they have reasonable belief that an unregistered or regulated dog may be present. Prior to inspections commencing, Council had provided information to residents about responsible animal ownership to reduce the number of fines issued this year. Please be sure to register your animal via BPAY, online, phone or visit Council’s Customer Service Centres.

Next 1080 Baiting Campaign will be kicking off in October
Maranoa Regional Council would like notify residents and landowners that the upcoming 1080 Baiting Campaign will be held from Monday, 12 – Friday 23 October 2026. Council will be issuing bait order forms to eligible participants via email or post in accordance with available contact details on Monday, 10 August 2026. Alternatively, those wishing to be involved in the program can obtain a form from Council’s website. Council asks that completed forms be returned to them by Friday, 4 September by any of the following methods; email, mail or at a Customer Service Centre located throughout the region. Council brings a cool relief for Maranoa’s seniors Last month, Maranoa Regional Council Mayor Wendy Taylor and Deputy Mayor Cameron O’Neil delivered good news to Roma’s U3A. Coming through on Council’s budget promises, $150,000 will go towards a major reverse-cycle aircon installation for the main hall area in the Roma Senior Citizens building. This is just one of many projects Council will be investing in, with more than $57 million budgeted for improvements in infrastructure, community facilities, housing, roads, water, and resilience projects across the region while delivering a return to an operating surplus.

Council’s winter school holiday program cools up a good time Maranoa Regional Council’s 2026 Winter School Holiday program was another big hit as kids across the region made some lifelong memories with a whole range of activities. From robot-making, painting, spa days, sports, cooking and more, there was something on offer for everyone. LIBRARY CORNER BOOK WEEK: 22 - 28 August – Symphony of Stories This August, Maranoa Libraries are celebrating Children's Book Week with the 2026 theme, Symphony of Stories. Stories have a wonderful way of bringing people together. They spark imagination, encourage curiosity, inspire creativity and help us see the world through different eyes. Just like the instruments in an orchestra, every book has its own unique voice, and together they create a symphony of stories waiting to be discovered. Throughout Children's Book Week, our libraries will feature themed displays, special storytime sessions, children's activities and a showcase of this year's Children's Book Council of Australia shortlisted titles.
It's the perfect opportunity to explore new books, revisit old favourites and share the joy of reading with the young people in your life. Whether you're visiting for Storytime, borrowing your next family read or simply dropping in to see what's happening, we'd love to welcome you into your local library. There is always something new to discover on our shelves, and Children's Book Week is the perfect time to celebrate the stories that connect our communities and inspire readers of all ages.
Free English Programs for the Maranoa Residents across the Maranoa are invited to participate in Free English Programs, designed to support multicultural community members in developing essential skills for everyday life, the workplace, and further study. The program will be delivered by a team of highly qualified professionals, including experienced teachers, speech therapists, and English instructors, providing a supportive and enriching learning experience. During this program, participants will strengthen their English language skills and gain valuable insights
into Australian society and culture, local customs and values and working in Australia. This comprehensive learning approach is designed to help participants feel more confident and better prepared to engage fully in Australian life and work. FROM OUR COMMUNITY Four ROAMING Artists Coming to Roma! The Roma on Bungil Gallery is excited to present ROAMING, an exhibition featuring the works of four talented artists from Northern New South Wales: Skye McKenny, Jude McBean, Bruce Zietsch, and Max Powell. Each artist brings a unique and personal perspective to the landscapes of Northern NSW, reflecting the environments they live in and travel through. The Official Opening will be held at 5pm on Friday, 21 August. Everyone is invited to meet the artists and enjoy nibbles and refreshments. While in Roma, the artists will also host an Artist’s Talk at 10:30am on Saturday, 22 August, in the Gallery (free event). Additionally, a Still Life Painting Workshop will take place on Wednesday, 19 August, from 5pm to 7:30pm at the Maranoa Artist’s Studio. Cost: $30. To book, contact Sandy on 0427 227 557. The exhibition highlights Skye McKenny’s layered acrylic paintings inspired by Yamba’s gardens and Northern NSW National Parks, Jude McBean’s landscapes and florals influenced by her love of lookouts and flowers, Bruce Zietsch’s large acrylic works capturing the essence of water, light, and emotion, and Max Powell’s impressive hand-built stoneware ceramics, created in his Glen Innes studio and inspired by the New England landscape. ROAMING runs until 12 noon, Saturday, 24 October.
MARANOA MOMENTS Surat Tennis Club Serves Up a Successful New Competition The Surat Tennis Club has wrapped up its inaugural mini double’s competition, with the five-week event proving to be a fantastic success and an encouraging sign for the future of tennis in our community. The competition ran over four weeks, culminating in a final’s night on Tuesday, 14 July. With 12 doubles teams taking part, participation exceeded expectations and created a fun, competitive atmosphere both on and off the court. To add to the social aspect of the event, Weeks 1 and 5 featured a BBQ dinner and bar, giving players and spectators the opportunity to relax and catch up after their matches. The club extends its sincere thanks to SDDA for generously organising the Week 1 BBQ. One of the highlights of the competition was the themed costume night, which was enthusiastically embraced by participants. The creativity and team spirit on display made for a memorable evening, with players voting for the best-dressed doubles team to receive a cash prize. Planning is underway for another mini competition to be held in September (date and format TBC). While the competition has concluded, the tennis action certainly hasn't stopped. Social tennis continues every Tuesday evening from 6.00 pm to 8.00pm, with players of all ages and abilities welcome. Teams and matches are organised on the night, making it an easy and enjoyable way for both new and returning players to get involved. With growing participation, strong community support and exciting plans already underway, the future is looking bright for Surat Tennis Club. The success of this first mini competition has laid a solid foundation for future events and highlights the important role community sport continues to play in bringing people together.

Spotlight Moment: Waterslides Take Shape One of the facility’s most anticipated attractions is beginning to take shape, with the colourful waterslide components arriving in Roma and assembly now underway offsite. Individual slide pieces are being joined into three-piece sections before being transported to the Denise Spencer Aquatic Centre, where they will be lifted into position and connected as part of the fourflume waterslide structure. Meanwhile, preparations are continuing onsite, with the heavy-duty hold-down bolts being installed and formwork for the supporting concrete columns being prepared ahead of pouring. This is an exciting step towards seeing the waterslides rise above the facility—and brings the community another step closer to enjoying one of the redevelopment’s standout features.
