NEW BIRTH CERTIFICATE FOR TRAVELLING MINORS!

The new Passport and Travel Documents Act officially took effect from Monday, June 1st. Under the new legislation, South Africans and foreign nationals travelling with children under the age of 18 are required to produce Unabridged Birth Certificates. The implementation of the new legislation is part of government’s commitment to safeguard the best interests of children and prevent child trafficking. The Department of Home Affairs said parents who needed to travel with their children and couldn’t get Unabridged Birth Certificates in time, would be able to leave the country with a letter indicating that they had applied for the documents. Under the new law, all minors under the age of 18 years will be required to produce, in addition to their passport, an Unabridged Birth Certificate (showing the particulars of both parents) when exiting and entering South African ports of entry. According to the department, when a child travels with only one parent, additional documents should include an affidavit in which the absent parent gives consent for the child to travel, a court order granting full parental responsibilities or legal guardianship of the child, or the death certificate of the absent parent. The affidavit should be no more than three months old from date of travel. In the event of a child travelling with a person other than a parent, the Unabridged Birth Certificate must be supplemented by affidavits from the parents or legal guardians confirming that the child may travel with that person. Copies of the ID or passports of the parents or legal guardian, and the contact details of the parents or legal guardian must also be provided. In the event where a child is travelling as an unaccompanied minor, not only the Unabridged Birth Certificate, but also proof of consent from both parents or legal guardians and contact details, and documentation relating to the person receiving the child in South Africa, would have to be produced. – SAnews.gov.za

Youth called to participate in Gauteng Youth Month.

The Gauteng provincial government has called on youth to participate in this year’s youth month programme.

Launching what she called a youth programme with a difference, Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Molebatsi Bopape said this year government would put a special focus on what young people want. “We want to know what makes you tick,” she said. This year’s Youth Month was formally launched at Nasrec Expo Centre under the theme "Youth Moving Gauteng City Region Forward" The 2015 Youth Month Programme will focus on Jobs, Career and Entrepreneurship Expo to be hosted at Nasrec Expo Centre from the 8 - 17 June 2015. Young people across the province are expected to attend the expo and be exposed to new ideas, opportunities, various cultural activities as well as a series of lectures by high profile speakers. The event was attended by Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi – Malobane, Roads Transport MEC Ismail Vadi, Educators, learners and officials to celebrate youth development. MEC Bopape said this year’s event was a prelude

to the 40th Anniversary which would be celebrated in 2016. “As we come towards commemorating the 39th anniversary of the June 16 student uprising, we remember that the youth were the ones who eventually drove this country towards 1994 and democracy,” Bopape said. To entertain the crowd, Joburg emergency services and metro police cadets performed a drill for the audience, displaying their training, discipline and commitment to their jobs. An exhibition showcased information about industries and academic institutions offering opportunities for youths. “We will be having 135 exhibitors showcasing information from different industries and academic institutions,” Bopape said. Here are some of the events on the programme: • On the 11th and 12th June the province will host a Youth Indaba at Nasrec, Johannesburg. • The Department of Economic Development will host an Economic Opportunities Roadshow on the 11th of June 2015. • To promote reading amongst the youth, the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation 22-23 June 2015 will host a Readerthon.
