Sanremo Product Manager Zamprogno
Let’s lighten the mood, turn off the air conditioning, grab some water, and remind ourselves that this is just a friendly chat on a hot June afternoon. So, let’s begin!
Zamprogno Andrea Zamprogno
Sanremo Product Manager
What wild animal best represents you? – I ask, mimicking the opening question of interviews by a well-known Italian journalist on the RAI network. Andrea looks at me in surprise, yet still searches within himself for an answer. … Wow! An animal?!
Silence. Laughter.
I was only joking, but let me ask you…
As opposed to the ibex, the company’s symbol, what animal would you represents you?
Ah! That’s a good comparison, and I can say that, just as the ibex strives to reach great heights, I see myself as ambitious and determined. Not selfishly, but in the sense of wanting to do things well — for the group, the company, or, more broadly, for the people around me. The ibex lives in groups, is loyal and helpful, yet also highly solitary. I can relate to that. Aside from moments of sharing, I am very happy on my own — I need solitude. I love being alone… and besides, I’m a Capricorn.
Tell us how you got here and what your role is within the company.
I joined Sanremo six years ago to replace the electronics engineer who had just left, so my work initially focused on the electronic development of the machines. The first projects I worked on were the X-One grinder and the Brave machine. Over time, I combined my purely technical role with the service and customer support, an area where I already had ten years of experience. I enjoy this part of the work because it allows me to express my relational and empathetic side. This wouldn't have been possible without the trust and support of CEO Carlo de Sordi and Danilo Llopis, who was Head of R&D at the time.
They believed in me, took me out of the technical office, sent me travelling across Italy and abroad (patiently waiting while I refreshed my English), and gave me the opportunity to engage directly with suppliers and later with customers at trade fairs.
I genuinely enjoy explaining our products’ features, highlighting their quality, and connecting with customers on an emotional level by sharing the story of our brand, who we are, and how we operate. I like to create an empathetic flow with customers, to truly understand their needs.
Let’s talk about machines and design. When does your expertise come into play?
I am involved in the project right from the very beginning. In the past, my contribution was more focused on the electronic side: determining the product’s initial features, detailing how the machine operates from the moment it is powered on, writing the technical specifications, involving the laboratory team and external experts to initiate the development process, straight through to the testing phase. I also engaged with distributors, taking the customers' needs into account — an invaluable opportunity to consider diverse requirements from across the globe.
It's a complex process within a constantly growing company, now managed by an even larger team. The electronics and connectivity division is now overseen by Marco De Gregorio [interview in Highlights #17], who is doing an outstanding job, while I have taken on the role of Product Manager. It's a more strategic role, less specific than before.
Today, my task is to define the product’s characteristics in terms of functionality and performance, with a keen eye on market trends, to propose products and improvements based on specific needs or trends that I identify at international trade fairs or among distributors, and to help shape the company’s five-year vision, in terms of both products and new market sectors.
What is the most significant innovation you have seen here?
The D8 machine was a remarkable innovation that continues to give us great satisfaction, but I would also include the Brave and the X-One grinder — not merely because they were my first projects, but because they are products that appear to be simple, but are actually quite complex from an engineering perspective. The Brave has not yet entered the market, as the current context differs from when it was launched; however, it still holds many unexplored technologies that we hope to revisit soon.
Innovation. Tell us about a moment when courage was needed.
Innovation and courage go hand in hand, at least at this company, but if I had to choose, I would still say the X-One — it is a truly unconventional product.
When we began in 2015, Sanremo had no experience designing grinders, but we had clear ideas and goals. We sought help from an external consultant, but it proved unproductive. So, we started from scratch, facing countless technical challenges, further complicated by the Covid pandemic, which completely reshaped the market and forced us to rethink the product. Learning from our setbacks, we began again and, thanks to Diego Salin and a dedicated team, we finally found the right path that led to its completion.
The story of this product reminds me of the Apollo 11 mission and the many obstacles encountered along the way; in the sense that the X-One’s tenacious design process taught us a great deal, united the team, showed us how to fight and persevere, and encouraged us to keep moving forward in the face of adversity. It was a formidable challenge that demanded immense courage.
What they say about him
He’s incredibly kind.
He’s always ready to help; anyone with a problem turns to Andrea, and he’ll respond at any hour.
He’s sincere, and if he scolds someone, it’s only with their best interests at heart.
He’s very shy.
Beneath his cuddly Winnie the Pooh appearance :) lies an extraordinary amount of determination and expertise.
When he goes to international trade fairs, he’s known for carrying a bag with a change of clothes for his morning run everywhere he goes, but the only running he ever ends up doing is when he gets out of bed in the morning. He has an infectious laugh.
He’s a diamond in the rough.
Are you athletic? What kinds of sports activities do you do?
You wouldn’t think it to look at me, but I’m an avid sportsman. When I was younger, I played basketball, and later I took up running for many years. I would set off at midnight to run through the Treviso hills, between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. Now I can’t run at night anymore, but early in the mornings I like to head out to the Montello hills near my home.
Running allows me to switch off, clear my head, focus on my breathing, or simply look ahead. While I run, I think more calmly. Sometimes I start with one perspective and finish with another, and that’s a good thing.
I played tennis regularly for about seven years. I really enjoy it because it’s a sport of resilience. It’s difficult to learn, but once you master the posture and find the right push, when you start placing your shots and thinking "this one goes here, that one goes there", you feel a sense of lightness and at the same time complete control.
It’s a bit like life. There's a strong psychological element with your opponent: the way they approach and look at you, the way fortunes shift from one moment to the next; you can play two brilliant sets and then collapse in the third, yet it’s still all you. You own all your shots! Tennis is fantastic.
Now that I work at Sanremo, I don’t have enough time to play, but I’m thinking about taking it up again because I really enjoy it and it’s a fun way to relieve stress and stay in shape. Having a tennis court here… would be wonderful!
Any other passions?
Mountain trekking, especially on long routes that take more than a day to complete.
For example, I’ve been to Mount Rasta in the Pasubio group, the Pederü and Sennes refuges in Val Badia, Malga Federa in the Ampezzo Dolomites, Mount Cervino, the Gorges du Verdon in Provence, and the heavily wooded Pyrenees in the Basque Country.
When I think back
Any plans for the future?
To get a new car and build a self-sustaining house in the middle of the Montello countryside, where I can keep a dog and perhaps other animals too. Here at Sanremo, I certainly want to help the company grow even more and raise awareness of the quality it can deliver. My dream? To bring the Brave to life!
Before I started working at Sanremo, when I would go to the bar for a coffee, I had no idea of the complexity of the product — the mechanics, the electronics, the communication, and even the strategy behind an espresso. It’s truly a fascinating world!
If you had to sum up Sanremo in just a few words?
…Hmm. So many things have to be condensed… instinctively I would say "my home, where I feel good" and "my refuge, where I find fulfilment". Both are places of free expression and are filled with wonderful people I can rely on.
How do you take your coffee?
Before I came to Sanremo, I used to take it with "pannetta" [single-serve cream], but now I take it black, bitter, and natural.

David Salmasi 54 years old, with the company since 2010
Visual Strategy Visual Strategy David Salmasi Salmasi
It’s a late January Wednesday morning – one of those days when the Po Valley reveals every possible shade of grey. More than fifty, if you look closely. Inside the meeting room at Sanremo Coffee Machines, we sit comfortably on leather Chesterfield sofas, chosen by David himself to create a warm, homely corner for informal meetings and coffee breaks. Coffee is served from a tireless Opera machine, standing elegantly on the bar counter.
Strategy David Salmasi
Let’s begin. Tell me about yourself.
I was born with a passion for anything that can be assembled and taken apart. After finishing school, I became fascinated with the visual world and enrolled in a Visual Arts academy in Milan, where I developed a strong interest in fashion and everything surrounding it.
At 23, I joined Maison Moschino, where I worked for three years.
After that, I left Milan and returned to the Veneto region, collaborating with several prestigious companies until the late 1990s. In 2000, I moved to Athens for ten years, where I worked with the largest Greek clothing company. I initially focused on window displays, but gradually began developing concepts for their new stores and offices. That’s when I felt the desire to move beyond staging and into design.
How long have you been at Sanremo?
Roughly 15 years. I’ve always shared a strong friendship with Carlo De Sordi. We both have a passion for cycling—we used to ride together when we were younger and were part of the same group of friends. A long-standing friendship with Carlo De Sordi—built on cycling and shared youth—eventually led to a conversation over wine. Then an invitation: “Come and have a coffee. I want to show you the company". When I came here, he proudly showed me what he had built over the years. Sitting at that very table, he asked for my opinion on the company’s visual identity—stands, environments, merchandising, and so on. I told him something was missing: the fashion element that’s part of my DNA. I couldn’t see that emotional spark I was used to in the fashion world.
I must have struck a chord, because a few days later he called me and said “You have a blank canvas. Fill it with images.” That’s how I joined Sanremo’s marketing team.
Fifteen years on, that vision continues to shape Sanremo’s identity - we anticipate trends rather than follow them, translating them into materials, colours, and forms that speak beyond the product.
Tell me about Sanremo House.
The concept of Sanremo House emerged from a simple yet powerful idea from Carlo: Sanremo as a family. He has always seen the company as a collective effort—people working together toward a shared ambition of making the brand the best in the world. And what better place to represent a family than a home?
Defining Sanremo as Sanremo House was an idea that immediately resonated across the entire company.
So this vision also shaped the exhibition stands?
Absolutely. The concept of the house extends directly into the stand design. It’s a vision that has gradually redefined not just the brand, but the spaces it inhabits - especially its stands.
The goal is no longer purely commercial. Not just machines on display. Instead, a place to pause.
To talk. To connect. A place where coffee becomes a starting point, not the destination.
Host 2025
While previous editions featured a single multifunctional space, the HOST 2025 stand introduced a more articulated layout, creating distinct environments that encourage different forms of interaction.
Did your first stand already reflect this concept?
Not consciously, but in a way, yes – that vibe was already there.
The first stand I designed featured eight small, house-like structures, each about two by two metres, with pitched roofs, no windows and a single door. Inside each one, a coffee machine. They were arranged in two rows with a central walkway, almost like a small street, with plants and a bench where people could stop and sit.
In the end, it proved a bit too restrictive for visitor flow, but it marked a real shift in Sanremo’s image - moving away from glossy black finishes, red woods, and the formal, suit-and-tie aesthetic of previous decades.
Let’s move to HOST 2025. Tell us about the new stand.
In a way, the stand at HOST 2025 is the first true expression of the Sanremo House concept. It stands apart from previous editions through a more original spatial layout, while maintaining a strong green philosophy at its core, wooden structures and an abundance of natural plants.
The stand is organised into distinct areas. There’s the essential machine zone, alongside the testing arena - an energetic, ever-changing space where technicians, baristas, and enthusiasts focus on extraction, tast ing, and evaluation. It’s a place where a certain level of chaos meets intense concentration.
Next to this is a dedicated area for singlegroup machines, such as the CUBE and the YOU. Then comes the lounge, complete with a bar counter - where you can enjoy not only a great coffee, but also a gin and tonic or a glass of red wine. It’s a highly social space. Finally, the entrance area is designed for first encounters and informal conversations.
Each zone is defined by its own materials and colour palette. At the centre remains the key element: the house, built from simple raw timber beams (10x10 cm), with a language that recalls Nordic and Japanese design. In some areas, it is enclosed with transparent polycarbonate panels or softened by natural linen fabrics, creating a balance between openness and intimacy.
The stand worked because it encouraged human connection, in line with the company philosophy. Do you agree?
Yes, absolutely. Compared to previous stands, this one made people feel particularly at ease – thanks to the colours, furnishings, and the way spaces were structured.
For years, the palette revolved around natural tones, greens from plants and the brown of leather sofas. At HOST 2025, we introduced entirely new colours that brought warmth: amber and Mocha red/brown. The furniture also played a key role. Visitors encountered elements never used before: home style sofas instead of office seating, traditional sideboards typical of Danish homes, and domestic lighting. We introduced more everyday life into the space, elements connected to the home rather than the business world.
With HOST 2025, Sanremo once again raised the bar, moving away from a strictly corporate image toward something more approachable and human.
Can we consider this a model for the future?
For the next 3–4 years, this will definitely be the base model, although it will naturally evolve, like all Sanremo stands. Materials and forms will likely remain consistent, but new elements may be introduced.
Above all, I believe we will push further toward the idea of “a stand without machines”.
We introduced elements from home and a new colour palette, bringing greater warmth and a stronger sense of hospitality to the stand.
Back to you, what are your passions?
The sea and cycling. Cycling is also connected to the mountains. But my first love is the sea. I’m fortunate enough to experience it from a boat, which allows me to reach places that would otherwise be inaccessible, isolated beaches and complete silence.
How do you like your coffee?
I used to drink coffee, whether moka or espresso, with sugar. Since working at Sanremo, I drink it strictly without sugar, and only when it’s good. When I’m travelling, I’ll drink coffee almost anywhere - but if it’s not good, I won’t go back.
Stories to be discovered over a cup of coffee
Everest The growing mountain
The Tibetans call it Chomolungma, "Mother Goddess of the Universe". The Nepalese call it Sagarmatha, "Forehead of the Sky". Names that speak of a sacred and ancient bond with the highest mountain on Earth. The name "Everest", by contrast, comes from the West: in 1865, the Royal Geographical Society named it after George Everest, the British geographer who oversaw the great topographical surveys of India.
The first expedition dates back to 1921, led by Colonel Charles Howard-Bury. For decades, however, the summit remained unreachable: storms, avalanches, and oxygen shortages defeated more than ten expeditions, leaving behind tales of courage and tragedy
It was only on 29 May 1953 that Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay finally reached 8,848 metres, aided by oxygen tanks and equipment that today seems primitive: heavy boots, canvas tents, and hemp ropes. Almost twenty years later, in 1978, Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler accomplished the impossible: they summited Everest without breathing apparatus, proving that the human body could adapt to such extreme altitudes.
Meanwhile, the mountain has never remained still: tectonic plate movement continues to lift the Himalayas by about 4 millimetres per year. Today, Everest is officially measured at 8,849 metres – one metre higher than when this human adventure began. Climbing it means testing not only your own limits, but also those of a silent and unyielding mountain that relentlessly continues to grow.

Sanremo D8 at Isola Space
A design object for a daily ritual
With offices in Milan and Dubai, Isola Design Group is a leading international platform dedicated to independent designers and innovative studios. Its mission is rooted in a carefully curated blend of sustainability, innovation and craftsmanship — a physical and digital ecosystem connecting creatives, companies and industry professionals around the world.
In 2025, the group inaugurated Isola Space, its first physical hub in Dubai. Overlooking The Lana Promenade, this hybrid environment reflects the brand’s multifaceted identity, bringing together a design store, café, co-working area and event space within a single integrated concept.
In a place like Isola Space, the choice of coffee machine goes beyond function. It is, above all, a cultural and symbolic decision. As a brand rooted in Italian culture, Isola wanted to bring a symbol of its heritage into Dubai’s international landscape. At the intersection of identity and vision, Sanremo Coffee Machines was a natural choice — an Italian brand that shares the same commitment to design, quality and craftsmanship.

The art of connection, the soul of espresso
At PIR COFFEE EXPO 2025, Sanremo transformed its booth into a hub of inspiration, connection, and celebration of espresso.
PIR COFFEE EXPO
27 ––– 30 October 2025
Moscow, Russia
Four intense days, three visually striking areas and one unmistakable Italian family: Sanremo Coffee Machines. PIR COFFEE EXPO 2025 unfolded like a single rich, full-bodied shot of espresso: intense, vibrant and leaving a flawless after-taste. More than just an exhibition, the space became a vibrant focal point, where celebration, smiles and conviviality met the magic of coffee craftsmanship.
The booth — a true Italian corner — stood out with its impeccable design, perfectly echoing the aesthetic of Sanremo coffee machines. It was organised into three distinct areas, each with its own philosophy, yet united by a single shared heart.
In the Sanremo Café Racer Area — the beating heart of the booth — six flagship machines took centre stage in exclusive designs that showcased the full strength and character of the brand. The Sanremo D8 Area, designed in a vibrant pop-art style, featured four customised D8 PRO machines. Each stood on its own pedestal set against a chequered floor — a nod to the heritage of the Adonis brand — creating a look that was bold, iconic and contemporary. Completing the stand was the Sanremo Bar Area: a space brought to life by a professional presenter who turned a simple visit to the booth into a dynamic live experience. Competitions, quizzes and merchandise give-aways kept the audience constantly engaged, generating hundreds of new followers ready to discover the Sanremo world.
The Bar Area also welcomed highly skilled baristas and renowned Russian roasters, offering guests the chance to savour perfectly prepared blends. Coffee tastings featuring beans from some of Russia’s finest roasteries — Kanga, Atlas, Mikale, GG Coffee and Timwise — demonstrated the full potential of Sanremo technology.
The synergy between the three areas created a unique space
where visitors could follow the journey from machine to the perfect espresso in the cup. The event was marked by countless meetings and productive conversations, bringing together long-time friends and new acquaintances alike — from emerging baristas to owners of some of the most prominent coffee shop chains. The coffee community continues to grow, becoming stronger and more connected with every encounter.
PIR COFFEE 2025 was not just a trade show, but a powerful expression of Sanremo’s mission in action: connecting people through a shared love of great coffee, equipping professionals with world-class tools and creating spaces where experiences, knowledge and inspiration can flourish.
The exhibition may be over, but the most exciting part is yet to come.

Precision and adrenaline take centre stage in Barcelona
The Sanremo D8 Cup arrived in Barcelona, transforming the competition into a high-octane experience.
MyCoffeeAwards 7 ––– 9 November 2025
Nau Bostik, Barcelona
The specialty coffee scene experienced one of its most intense moments at MyCoffeeAwards, hosted within the iconic industrial setting of Nau Bostik — a distinctive arts venue in Barcelona’s La Sagrera district. From 7 to 9 November, roasters, baristas, brands and industry professionals gathered for three days of tastings, conferences, talks and competitions. Among the highlights, the first Barcelona edition of the Sanremo D8 Cup stood out — a challenge that fused advanced technology, barista expertise and adrenaline-fuelled competition.
In recent years, MyCoffeeAwards has established itself as a key event within Spain’s specialty coffee scene. The 2025 edition welcomed more than 30 international roasters and brands, with Sanremo Coffee Machines among the main sponsors.
1st place — Kevin Ferreira, Madness Coffee
Sanremo did more than simply showcase its range of machines: it transformed its exhibition space into a competitive stage for the D8 Cup. The event’s coffee partner was specialty green coffee importer Xorxios, supplying two outstanding lots: a Kenyan coffee from Finca Tatu Estate (89 SCA points) and a Panamanian coffee from Finca Lorayne (88.5 SCA points).
The mechanics of the challenge: when the machine becomes the judge
The format was simple yet rigorous. Sixteen baristas were selected through an online call for entries, each submitting a video explaining why they deserved to compete. At stake was a Sanremo D8, widely regarded as one of the most advanced machines on the market. What made this competition unique? The final judgement was not based solely on taste. The D8 itself assessed the precision of each extraction, comparing it against a master reference recipe. The barista whose result came closest to a 100% match won the machine. The winner was Kevin Ferreira of Madness Coffee, crowned champion of the D8 Cup Barcelona edition.
A glimpse into the future
The response from both the audience and participants confirmed the event’s success, setting a new benchmark for specialty coffee competitions in Spain. Since its debut in 2024, the Sanremo D8 Cup has already travelled to London, Athens, Hamburg, Melbourne and Houston.
The Spanish edition of the D8 Cup demonstrated that technological innovation and coffee culture can thrive alongside the excitement of a truly spectacular event — one that engages, inspires and challenges the talent of professional baristas.

Stories to be discovered over a cup of coffee
Hibakujumoku Trees
that survived the atomic bomb
The story of the Hibakujumoku began on 6 August 1945 in Hiroshima, when the atomic bomb generated a thermal intensity of around 5,500 degrees Celsius within a radius of 3 km. It was as if the Sun had touched the Earth for a few brief seconds. Yet just a few months later, some trees began to sprout again from their charred trunks and deep roots, thanks to their extraordinary cellular plasticity.
Today, over 160 trees in Hiroshima and Nagasaki are officially recognised as Hibakujumoku. Declared natural monuments, they are marked with small yellow signs identifying them as “trees exposed to nuclear radiation,” showing the species and the distance from the hypocentre of the explosion.
They belong to more than 30 species, including Ginkgo biloba – the most renowned – Aphananthe aspera, Cinnamomum camphora (several of which still stand near Hiroshima’s hypocentre), Diospyros kaki (some still bear fruit), Holly–Ilex rotunda, Platanus orientalis, Paeonia suffruticosa, and Salix babylonica, which survived less than 400 metres from the hypocentre.
Living symbols of nature’s ability to regenerate even under the harshest conditions, Hibakujumoku are a unique case of ecological resilience to nuclear devastation, and are the focus of international projects that distribute their seeds and seedlings across the globe.

Women shaping the future of coffee
Interview by Sofia Calabrisello
Dee–Nadine Alam
35 anni, Sanremo Australia
Technical Relationship Manager
How did your journey into the world of coffee begin?
My journey in the hospitality industry began as a pastry chef straight after secondary school. After realising that path wasn’t the right fit for me, I turned to coffee, working in a very busy café at the prestigious Macquarie University in Sydney.
Working in such a fast-paced, high-volume environment gave me a solid foundation in the fundamentals of coffee, and I was soon promoted to café manager. From there, my career continued to evolve, leading me into training and sales roles within the specialty coffee industry.
What brought you to Sanremo?
It was through Santiago, Sanremo’s marketing manager at the time, that I first discovered the brand — and, more specifically, the Opera. I tried the espresso machine for the first time at a trade show, which later led me to meet Nick and Alex Calabrisello, along with the entire Sanremo team. Opera was unlike any other machine I had ever used. Its functionality and level of control completely redefined my expectations of what an
espresso machine could do. To this day, it remains the best extraction experience I have ever had — and the moment I truly fell in love with the Sanremo brand.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your work?
Problem-solving lies at the heart of what I enjoy most about my job. Supporting people in the field and helping them overcome technical challenges is incredibly rewarding, especially when it allows them to continue operating at their best.
The coffee industry still faces a significant shortage of technicians and senior managers, something I’m very aware of.
I am committed to creating a space where women can be heard, respected anxd recognised in technical roles.
Being visible in this position is important — not just for me, but also for the women entering the industry. Representation matters, and I’m proud to help demonstrate that women are not only suited to these roles, but can truly excel in them.

Besides coffee, what else do you enjoy?
I’m happiest when I’m outdoors. Hiking in nature, swimming in waterfalls and spending time outside help me recharge and regain balance. I also row regularly as part of a team, usually on weekends. Being out on the water early in the morning allows me to completely switch off, focus on the rhythm and enjoy a sense of calm that stays with me throughout the rest of the week.
How do you prefer to drink your coffee?
Every morning I start my day with an Almond Flat White, followed by a V60 pour-over, brewed on a Café Racer with a long pre-infusion.
Looking ahead to the future of specialty coffee in your country, what do you hope to see — both for professional baristas and for consumers?
Looking at the future of specialty coffee in Australia, I hope to see greater education and awareness around coffee equipment, both among professional baristas and consumers. I would love to see people develop a deeper understanding of the quality of the machines they work with or invest in, rather than focusing solely on brands.
Understanding what is inside a machine — its technology, functionality and engineering — is just as important as how it looks on the bar.
Sanremo places the same emphasis on technical innovation as it does on external design, and I hope the industry continues to look beyond the surface, valuing performance, consistency and long-term reliability through better education and more informed choices.
Sanremo and Malefatte –the value of solidarity merchandising
The new Sanremo merchandising collection bears the Malefatte brand name, renewing its solidarity partnership with one of the most visionary and tenacious social cooperatives in the Venetian scene: Rio Terà dei Pensieri. We asked Vania Carlot, president, and Liri Longo, project manager, to share the story and philosophy behind a 100% made in prison craft production enterprise.
Tell us about the Malefatte brand.
––– Vania Carlot
The Malefatte brand fully reflects the mission of the social cooperative, which since 1994 has focused on training and work within Venetian prisons.
The first project, launched at the Santa Maria Maggiore Men's Prison, was a leather goods workshop. We didn’t have a formal business plan, but we soon realised there was interest in the products, that a market existed, and that it was slowly growing. This led to the idea of structuring the business and enhancing the design with the help of Fabrizio Olivetti, a renowned Venetian graphic designer (he designed the logo of the City of Venice). This process also prompted the decision to use recycled materials, shifting from traditional leather goods to recycled PVC
Today, Malefatte produces unique bags, backpacks, and accessories from discarded advertising banners — from exhibitions, events, and city celebrations — which are selected, cut, and sewn by prisoners. These are handcrafted, eco-sustainable, fair-trade products that tell a genuine story of redemption.
Vania Carlot President of the Cooperative Rio Terà dei Pensieri
Malefatte is an unusual name for a craft production enterprise. How did it come about?
––– Liri Longo
Yes, that’s true. We wanted a more "commercial" name than that of the cooperative to identify these special products. The idea came from a competition organised in the men’s prison screen printing workshop: inmates proposed several options, and the one with the most votes was "Malefatte". A term that evokes mistakes and faults, but in this case becomes a symbol of rebirth and creativity.
The cooperative also operates at the women’s prison in Venice. What activities does it carry out?
––– Vania Carlot
In addition to the recycled PVC and screen printing workshops at the men’s prison, the cooperative also runs horticulture and cosmetics activities at the Giudecca women’s prison. Here, with the support of experts, organic body and hair care products are created in the cosmetics workshop: face and body creams, shampoos, conditioners, solid and liquid soaps, even including a 100% vegan line.
All products are made from essences grown in the Orto delle Meraviglie (Garden of Wonders), which are harvested, dried, and transformed into glycerine extracts within the prison. The supply chain prioritises eco-sustainability, respecting the natural rhythms of the seasons and only using what is produced in the garden, with no chemical additives. This process carries not only productive value, but also educational significance: it teaches that no external elements are needed to make a difference, and that like plants, we, too, can endure, adapt, and transform ourselves to remain part of the world.

#workinprison
The Giudecca Women’s Prison houses women serving long sentences and is also home to the Istituto a Custodia Attenuata Madri (ICAM), dedicated to inmates with children. The Santa Maria Maggiore Prison, on the other hand, houses men awaiting trial or serving short sentences, although many remain there for three years or more.
Investing time in awareness and training programmes in prison promotes reintegration into the work force and society, reduces the risk of recidivism, and restores dignity to those seeking a fresh start.
Training, craft production and job placement. How do you fund your activities?
–––
Liri Longo
At the beginning, we relied primarily on volunteers and sales at markets and fairs, which were essential for building recognition and establishing national connections. The first point of sale was an old newsstand in Campo Santo Stefano; then in 2016, a meeting with American artist Mark Bradford — who was impressed by the project's social impact — led to the opening of a proper shop in the Frari area, which has been operating for seven years.
Bag Created by Mark Bradford with Berengo Studio in Murano, this edition consists of 30 glass sculptures depicting shopping bags with engraved marks on the surface, symbolising the temporary nature of imprisonment. A reference to both the PVC bags produced at the men’s prison workshops and the shopping bags common at international events such as the Venice Biennale.
At the same time, we participated in numerous public and private funding initiatives, which supported the launch of new training and work activities for inmates. Today, however, the focus has shifted back to direct and structured sales. We are concentrating particularly on customised products and expanding orders from companies such as Sanremo Coffee Machines, Fastweb, Teatro La Fenice, Palazzo Grassi, and the Aman Hotel in Venice.
