Celebrating the impact you are making at Mansfield The past year has seen a great number of activities and projects taking place thanks to the wonderful support of alumni and friends of Mansfield. For anyone who has had the opportunity to visit College recently, the most visible project has been the new Love Lane Building, which will house 74 new student bedrooms, Mansfield’s first purpose-built lecture auditorium and the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights. Work started on the site in February 2016 and students are already excited about having the opportunity to live in the new accommodation, starting from the 2017/18 academic year. Those currently living in the Garden Building have had a front-row seat to watch the new building take shape, which is located in the space between the Garden Building and the Principal’s Lodgings. Thank you to everyone who is making this exciting development a reality. A good number of you have also continued to support the Access and Outreach Fund, which has led to even more open days and school visits taking place over the past year. Our current students continue to get involved with the events, which are designed to encourage and support students, from
schools that would usually see few Oxbridge applications, to consider applying to Oxford and to Mansfield in particular. Our dedicated student team of Access Ambassadors work at the events to share their own advice and personal stories with potential future Mansfielders. Some of our Ambassadors came to Mansfield because of an access event, providing a wonderful example of how supporting this area of College activity has a positive impact every year. Student support continues to be an important area of funding at Mansfield and your donations are helping to ensure we build on the wonderful opportunities and facilities available to our students. As well as donations to our Access and Outreach Fund, gifts made to the Mansfield Matters Fund, to our undergraduate teaching fund, and to our numerous prizes all go towards making Mansfield a supportive and engaging environment in which our students can develop key skills to take into their future studies and careers. With your future support we will be able to provide even more opportunities and support to Mansfield students.

The Reach Scholarship Fund
The University’s Student Union created what is now named the Reach Scholarship Fund in the 1990s. This wonderful fund offers scholarships to students from low-income countries who cannot study for a degree at home, perhaps due to political or financial reasons, or because of the lack of educational facilities. This life-changing opportunity came to the attention of Mansfield students, who put forward a plan to raise the funds needed to welcome Mansfield’s first ever Reach Scholar. At the start of 2015/16, with the backing of the College and Fellows, fundraising started to make this opportunity possible. The scholarships are funded by a collaboration between the University, the College and the JCR and MCR. Last year a fantastic number of current students and Fellows made anonymous gifts to support a Reach Scholar at Mansfield. In addition, there was kind support from Sarah Harkness (PPE, 1980) and Peter Harkness, who were excited to hear about the students’ proposal. With everyone’s support, as well as the College’s contribution, enough was raised to fully fund the first year of study and we are delighted to report that Mansfield’s first Reach Scholar started here in Michaelmas 2016.
Peter Harkness commented: ‘When I met last year’s JCR President, Luke Charters-Reid, at a College event and he told me of the overwhelming number of JCR members who had personally donated to support a Reach Scholar, I thought it was typical of the spirit which this College shows – so ‘Mansfield’. Sarah and I immediately decided to top up the fundraising by the JCR and others so their goal could be achieved, and we are donating the same sum for each of the three years the first Reach Scholar is here. Our original endowment to Mansfield was made specifically because this College is so inclusive – it’s top of the league within Oxford University – and this seemed a natural extension of what we have previously done. I feel we are living in pretty divisive times and the Reach initiative appeals to me as a small opportunity to reverse that tide. I hope others might make the same decision we have made and support this initiative in future years.’ The current JCR and MCR benches have been promoting this fantastic success story to our freshers, so that the students, Fellows and the College can continue to work together with the University to carry on funding this life-changing opportunity.
Thank you 2016 leavers As well as supporting the Reach Scholarship Fund throughout their final year, our 2016 leavers also chose to direct their Leavers’ Gift to the Fund. Each year’s leavers have the opportunity to choose a project to support through a joint donation to College. A fantastic 77% of 2016 leavers chose to get involved last year, each making a £20.16 gift in their final battels. Thank you for your support.

Fergus Houghton-Connell Mathematics, 2014 In Hilary 2016, plans got underway for a 162km Oxford to London rowing challenge to raise money for the Mansfield College Boat Club. Many people got behind the row by sponsoring the event, which was due to take place in April 2016. However, as the first day of the row was almost in sight, the event had to be postponed due to dangerous river conditions. Nevertheless, our Mansfield rowers were undeterred – future dates were proposed, the event continued to be promoted and more sponsorship came through. After a few hurdles along the way, we are pleased to report that, on 29th September 2016, MCBC took to the water for their row. Although the rowers had to deal with gloomy weather conditions, the mixed crew powered on through the first day and, 11 hours and 60km of river later, they arrived on schedule at Reading. Spirits and determination remained high and, despite day two bringing the toughest test, with 63km of water to cover from Reading to Staines, the crew took to the water and completed the section as planned.

With a more manageable 38km to row on the last day, the VIII pushed through the miserable weather and everincreasing blisters on to the Tideway. After rowing up the famous Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race course, the triumphant team completed their gruelling challenge in Putney on Saturday 1st October 2016. Congratulations to them all! The rowers would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported and helped them along the way, as well as to the support crew who followed alongside. At the time of publication, over £1,600 had been raised. All funds will go towards supporting the rapidly growing Mansfield College Boat Club, including any vital repair work, new equipment, coaching, race entries and training.
Michael Walls, who read PPE as a Visiting Student in 1988 and his wife Alexandra visited Mansfield College in December, 2015 during their week-long trip to England. ‘While touring the College’s buildings and grounds, I reminisced about my economics tutorials with my tutor Nicholas Horsewood and my time spent in the College library and bar. I thought it remarkable how the College has maintained its core values and traditions while simultaneously meeting the needs of today’s students. It was fantastic to see the Crypt Café and Bar, for example, which provides an informal, modern atmosphere, nestled within a traditional Oxford setting. Members of the Mansfield community can chat and enjoy a relaxing drink or meal together. We didn’t have a space like this when I was at Mansfield and it was great to see the students enjoying it. I was also impressed by the new, modern accommodation in the Garden Building. I wish accommodation like this was available during my time at Oxford, as I lived in a flat above a Volvo garage far down the Iffley Road with Ben Auslander and Rich Phelan during my Michaelmas term, and with Gary
Forster and Alec Miller during my Hilary and Trinity terms. We were all Visiting Students at Mansfield and we are friends to this very day. I am certain that living in modern accommodation on the College grounds would have been more convenient for us and would have enhanced our experience in Oxford. In addition to visiting the College, Alexandra and I took advantage of my alumni status by visiting and gaining access to the Oxford colleges where various scenes from the Harry Potter movies were filmed, and took photos to share with our two boys upon our return home. It was really enjoyable to visit Mansfield again and see how much progress has been made in College.’ Michael is a partner at Ernst & Young LLP and lives in the Washington DC metropolitan area with his wife Alexandra and their two boys. Since his visit to College, Michael has become a College supporter and is currently a member of the Mansfield College Development Board.
Mansfield calling – College Telethons in 2015/16 Each year, current students apply to work on Mansfield’s telephone campaigns during the holidays. It’s a chance to gain valuable work experience and develop new skills, as well as reach out to hundreds of alumni around the world and help them stay connected to College. No matter how many miles away you are, or how many years have passed since graduation, alumni remain part of the Mansfield community and we are keen to share the latest College news and forthcoming events with you during the call. Telethons are also an opportunity to say thank you and, during each call shift, members of the student team are given the lovely task of carrying out ‘thank you’ calls to our regular supporters. As well as the two-week Telethons in September and April, 2015/16 saw Mansfield’s first mini December appeal, which took place over three days and focused predominantly on alumni in North America. Thank you to everyone who took a call and to those who sent notes of thanks and messages to our call team after speaking to one of them. We are always grateful for the wonderful memories you share, and for the careers advice you offer to Mansfield students. There are many ways that alumni get involved
with College and we appreciate the kind offers of support, including venues for events, as well as mentoring and internships for students. The Telethon is also an opportunity to get behind College fundraising priorities and, last year, more than 240 gifts were made as part of the telephone appeals alone, with over £104,000 being pledged. This fantastic response demonstrates how gifts of all sizes can have a really positive impact. So many developments have taken place over the past few years because of donations to College. Mansfield has never looked better and, with more alumni and friends getting behind College priorities each year, imagine what we will be able to do in the future. We would like to say a special thank you to everyone who chose to support the Telethon by making a donation to College. Many of you chose to get behind Mansfield by setting up a regular gift, which enables us to plan for the future. Last year’s priorities included the Mansfield Matters Fund (to provide unrestricted funding to support Mansfield’s greatest needs each year), the Access and Outreach Fund (to support College’s access events), and the new Love Lane Building. We hope that some of the stories in this newsletter will help demonstrate how your donations are being used.

Those who have had the opportunity to visit Mansfield over the past few years will have seen a dramatic transformation take place. Mansfield’s facilities have never been better, and it is thanks to the support of our friends and alumni that we are now in a position to offer Mansfield students an environment where they can really thrive. Funding for buildings and the environment has been directed to the Love Lane Building, which started to take shape in early 2016. It has also been used for much-needed improvements to rooms in the Garden Building and offsite in Ablethorpe. New fire doors have been installed to bring student bedrooms up to standard, worn furniture has been replaced and new kitchen facilities have been fitted to give Mansfield students a place where they can study or relax at the end of the day.
Teaching and Research: £9,323 When speaking to alumni, we often hear how tutors played one of the most important roles during their time at College. Gifts to teaching and research enable us to attract and maintain academics who are leaders in their field. Thank you to everyone who has supported this important area and got us a little closer to our long-term aim to fully endow Fellowships.
Unrestricted: £91,177 Each year, unrestricted donations are directed to the College’s greatest needs and used for a wide range of projects and activities that would not otherwise be possible. Each year, more and more donors are choosing to make an unrestricted gift, which gives the greatest flexibility. Last year, a proportion of unrestricted funding was directed to improvements in buildings and environments.

Mansfield has long since led the way when it comes to access, and it was thanks to donations to this important area that we were able to carry out our highest number of school visits and access events last year. As well as working with prospective students, Mansfield has really developed over the years to ensure that current students have the best possible experience while they are here. Donations help all aspects of student support, from student welfare and hardship to prizes and travel grants.
