Celebrating the impact you are making at Mansfield Over the past year your support has enabled us to transform many parts of Mansfield. In Michaelmas the East Range of College was officially opened for students to use and enjoy. The terrace and café area, named The Crypt, has really transformed this part of College, making it a hub for studying, eating and socialising. The 2014/15 financial year also saw significant improvements to the College Quad. Gardens were dug over, flowers planted along the sunken terrace edge, and a rose hedge put in to soften the new parking area. A major part of the path leading around the Quad was also re-laid with a hard-wearing smooth surface – a big improvement, as those of you who have been in College to experience the dust storms in summer and deep puddles through winter will discover! We aim to complete the other section of the path in front of the John Marsh Building after the Love Lane Building construction is finished. Thanks to your support our Access initiatives, which aim to ensure that no students with the academic potential to succeed are put off from applying to Oxford,
reached more young people in schools across the country than ever before. Over the year we ran 135 events, nearly double the number of the previous year. For the first time we ran two telethons, one in autumn 2014 and one in spring 2015. The teams of student callers thoroughly enjoyed speaking to many of you about your time at Mansfield and were inspired by the careers you have pursued since. We were delighted by the response from our alumni. Thank you to all of you who took the time to talk to one of our callers and to those of you who made a donation to the campaign. This edition of ‘Donor News’ features articles that demonstrate how our supporters are helping make a difference to College. Some of our alumni have also kindly included their thoughts on why they have chosen to support Mansfield in the last year. Their stories show that donations of any size can have an extremely positive impact on the College. We hope they will inspire those of you who have never donated, or who haven’t supported us for some time, to consider making a gift to Mansfield now or in the future. Thank you for your support. Kwabena Osei-Boateng Engineering Science Prize, Kwabena, who read Engineering, Economics and Management at Mansfield, made the very generous decision to endow an Engineering Prize at the College. The prize is awarded for the best performance in Engineering Science Prelims. The 2015 Kwabena OseiBoateng Scholar is Jiajin Gong. Jiajin deserves special congratulations because he achieved the highest Prelims performance in Mansfield this year across all subjects. Kwabena, who divides his time between New York and Accra, came in to meet Jiajin personally, to congratulate him on being the first recipient of the prize in his name.

I hope this prize enriches the lives of College students and encourages them to give back some day.’ Jiajin replied: ‘As a member of Mansfield, it’s my honour to receive such a prize. In the last year, I spent all of my time in our lovely College with friendly staff and friends. They made me feel at home. In the new beginning of second year, this prize gives me a huge surprise which is an identification of my effort and continues to inspire me to work hard. Thanks again to Mr. Osei-Boateng; his great kindness will become the source of my diligence.’
Kwabena commented: ‘People give back for so many reasons. For me, giving back is a way of promoting my lifelong passion for education. Education has been good to me and I want to ensure that others get as much benefit from it as I did. When I was at Mansfield, I was awarded a scholarship after my Prelims. The benefits of that scholarship (mainly free food in College!) were immensely helpful: it significantly eased my financial pressures and allowed me to focus on getting the best out of the college experience. Having benefitted from the benevolence of other alumni, I vowed that if I had the opportunity I would also give back. Give back in a way that promotes academic excellence at Mansfield and eases the financial pressures of its students. I am proud and excited to be in a position
Why I support the Love Lane Project – Tony Coates, Theology, 1961 Later, at Cambridge in the 1970s, I had a small advisory role in the founding of a new college. I expressed surprise at the high standard of the en-suite student accommodation. It was explained to me that, for a college with only a small endowment to remain financially viable, it was necessary to be able to attract considerable vacation conference business. Quite apart from its benefit to students, the Love Lane Building will enable Mansfield to benefit from that sort of income.

I decided to make an additional donation this year specifically for the Love Lane Project. There were three reasons… When I was at Mansfield in the early1960s, College was much smaller and almost entirely residential. We were already a multi-disciplinary college and we were a closeknit and supportive community. Even now, with a much larger college community, I would wish as many students as possible to have that sort of experience. Mansfield donor news 2014/15
Finally, in the 1980s in Geneva, working for the World Council of Churches, one of my tasks was to translate into English (for presentation to the United Nations) reports documenting details of human rights violations in Latin American countries during military dictatorships. They contained horrifying descriptions of torture, and made me so aware of the need to protect human rights worldwide. The new Institute for Human Rights in the Love Lane Building will promote the study and practice of human rights law, still an essential task. Any one of those reasons would have been enough to move me to make a donation.
Thank you, Leavers of 2015 Each year we give Leavers the opportunity to give something back to College to benefit future generations of Mansfield students, by making a gift through their battels. This year 82 Leavers chose to support College in this way. In discussion with the JCR it was agreed that the donation amount would be £20.15 and that the Leavers’ Gift would be used to replace the very dilapidated kitchen furniture in E-Block. The new tables, together with some new chairs, will really help to modernise the kitchens in this area of College, providing a better space for eating and socialising. The furniture will also feature ‘2015 Leavers’ Gift’ plaques to acknowledge the year group that kindly made the improvements possible.
A tale of two telethons For the first time Mansfield College ran two telethons this year. They took place just ahead of the start of Michaelmas and at the end of Hilary, when 12 current students embarked on an epic calling feat – to reach as many Mansfield alumni as possible! During the two telethons our dedicated call team spoke to hundreds of alumni. It was a great opportunity to hear some of your memories of Mansfield and your latest news. Thank you for taking the
time to speak to the students and for offering some great career and study advice – especially to our finalists. Special thanks to the many of you who chose to support this year’s priorities, including the Love Lane Building, Access and Outreach Fund and the Mansfield Matters General Fund. You pledged in the region of £150,000 during the telethons – thank you! Your support has already been making a difference to the Mansfield student experience.

Chapel renovation and restoration work The Chapel remains at the heart of Mansfield College and continues to welcome both College and local community members through its doors. Although a place of worship and reflection, the Chapel is also used for a growing range of activities, including meetings, dinners, lectures, cultural events and student-led recitals. In recent years the Chapel has been in real need of significant refurbishment work. The first step in addressing some of the most urgent projects took place earlier in the year. Thanks in part to a donation from the Congregational & General Charitable Trust, the leadwork on the Chapel roof was replaced - a crucial project to make the Chapel watertight and protect the interior for the future. In addition, donations to the Mansfield Matters General Fund

helped to replace the old and expensive boiler with far more efficient under-floor heating and a new wooden floor, in keeping with the Chapel’s beautiful architecture. Thank you to everyone who helped make these improvements possible.

Buildings and Environment: £816,204 In recent times College has seen more improvements made to its buildings and environment than at any other point in its history. Your support has made this possible. Thanks to you, we are moving ever closer to being able to provide the facilities that enable the 21st-century Mansfield scholar to flourish and to develop spaces that further enhance the College’s special sense of community. Over the next few years the College will embark on its most ambitious ever construction project – the Love Lane Building. Alumni support will be crucial to making this possible.

Student Support and Access: £47,127 Supporting our students and encouraging those from all backgrounds to study at Mansfield is central to our ethos. Donations to student support enable us to recognise and celebrate students’ achievements through prizes, as well as contributing to the Hardship Fund, which supports students who find themselves in unforeseen financial difficulty. By supporting our access work you are helping us reach out to students who might not have otherwise considered Oxford.
Teaching and Research: £8,163 Investing in our teaching and research enables us to attract and retain academics who are leaders in their field, ensuring that Mansfield continues to maintain its academic rigour and excellence. Every gift made to this important area of College is crucial, enabling us to continue our first-class teaching and helping us to better secure our financial future – our long-term aim is to fully endow our Fellowships.
