one mann’s opinion Hello everyone, Our photo section is fabulous. To me, it’s such a balanced section, with my dear friend Ramy Brook in this issue, who has become a superstar and fashion leader throughout the country. One of the events we have in this issue is that of Bradford Rand’s Hamptons Concours d’Elegance. I was in attendance and was totally impressed at how it was organized. There was an elite crowd and impressive cars shown. We also featured a great event held by Northwell Health on what’s becoming more and more prioritized—which is women’s health. And the hottest new featured event is the Italian jewelry house of Alberto Luzzi. It pleases me to know how we keep expanding and discovering new and exciting events everywhere. As for our cover, I’m very excited to have Judy Glickman Lauder on it. A famous photographer, philanthropist, humanitarian—we’re proud and honored to have such a woman that’s really made a mark in this world. She captures the moment and preserves history, making people remember or learn about the different facets of life. We’re also getting great feedback on our art and contributors section. It’s been noted on our social media, and we thank Jill Lotenberg, Michael Liman and Avalon Bellos for the consistent images we get to see with the stories they tell. We hope you all have had a great summer and are looking forward to the fall as much as we are. We have a lot of exciting new things coming your way and we are going to keep our readers updated on it all. Fashion week is approaching soon and we’ll have the best of the best to share with you.

EDITOR’S LETTER With the fall approaching, we begin to leave the comfort of the warm summer, the long sunny outings, transitioning into a time of preparation. Preparation for the cold to come, the plans we’ll think up, making the best of the pre-freezing temperatures. And with making the best, there are plenty of fall festivities to enjoy! But right now, here’s our summer recap, as we bid it adieu, and we embrace the autumn tide. The Hamptons made a bang with the events they held. From Ramy Brook’s upscale luncheon and Bradford Rand’s invitation-only celebration— benefitting local charities with over $100 million in collector automobiles—to the artistry of Italian jewelry-making by Alberto Luzzi at the 2026 Hamptons Jewelry Show, to Northwell Health’s fundraising of more than $650,000 at the eighth annual Summer Hamptons Evening, the grandeur of it all was very much present. The local views here in New York are amazing as is, but the views overseas and across states are no slouch either. Take Condado Ocean Club Puerto Rico as an example; the adults-only boutique property has become one of Puerto Rico’s most magnetic lifestyle stays where one can enjoy their relaxation without sacrificing excitement, all while overlooking the water. For those looking for scenic views in the states, Colorado’s Royal Gorge Route Railroad provides marvelous canyon, river and wildlife views accompanied by fine dining if desired.

With our health and wellness, we usually question what is right for us. We hear about many different or new things to take and the different approaches to body movement. We feature pharmacist Dr. Sue Ojageer; and guide and healer, Liat Berko. Other noteworthy individuals we feature are Harriet Newman Cohen, a pro in handling complex divorces with her firm Cohen Stine Kapoor LLP; and Dr. Michael Cohen, breast augmentation veteran—equally as good at breast reconstruction overall. On our cover, we have Judy Glickman Lauder. The artist. The collector. The photographer of decades, history, memories. The impactor. The legacy. She’s a woman who is dedicated to all she does, a fervent passion to her craft. See how her work has made its mark on history. We also have stunningfashion boots from Rains, and the collection from Maison Veni is a beauty. Our dining, photography, New York’s must go spots—they are all worth the experience and feeling. Enjoy this September issue!

Northwell’s Summer Hamptons Evening Event Raises

$650K

Northwell Health raised more than $650,000 at the eighth annual Summer Hamptons Evening. Since its inception, the event has raised nearly $7 million to support the Katz Institute for Women’s Health and the communities Northwell serves.

More than 300 supporters attended the event on August 8th, held at the Water Mill, NY residence of Victoria Moran-Furman, who co-hosted with Iris and Saul Katz, the benefactors of Northwell’s Katz Institute, Eric Moran and celebrity event planner Larry Scott of Lawrence Scott Events. Rosanna Scotto, cohost of Fox 5’s “Good Day New York,” served as emcee. The Katz Institute for Women’s Health is driven by the Katzes’ vision that women at every life stage should receive access to the best individualized care and resources. The institute has created the only dedicated network of more than 1,100 experts who are uniquely qualified to address the health care needs of women. The evening included remarks from Stephanie Trentacoste McNally, MD, medical director of the Katz Institute, system director of menopause and midlife health, and vice president of obstetrics and gynecology for Northwell’s central market. She highlighted Northwell’s investment in creating specialized centers for menopause and midlife health to help women navigate a pivotal phase of life that affects all aspects of their overall health. As part of the Katz Institute, the first-of-its-kind model will bring experts in multiple disciplines together under one roof to provide coordinated care. The first center opened in Stony Brook in March, and other locations are planned across Northwell’s footprint.

CONDADO OCEAN CLUB PUERTO RICO

Blends Oceanfront Calm With Social Energy By Merilee Kern, MBA

There is a reason certain hotels become destinations unto themselves. It is not always because they are the largest, the flashiest or the most over-the-top luxurious. More often, it comes down to atmosphere. A feeling. An energy that travelers immediately recognize the moment they arrive. In San Juan’s stylish Condado district, Condado Ocean Club has mastered exactly that. Perched directly along the Atlantic Ocean, this adults-only boutique property has become one of Puerto Rico’s most magnetic lifestyle stays, attracting travelers looking for far more than a standard Caribbean hotel experience. Here, the heartbeat of the property is not simply the guestrooms or even the ocean views, though both impress. It is the beach club atmosphere itself. The energy surrounding The Deck, the infinity pool, the cocktails, the music, the ocean breeze and the seamless transition from laid-back luxury by day to vibrant social scene by night. Condado Ocean Club feels intentionally designed for the modern traveler who wants relaxation without sacrificing excitement. The property somehow balances tranquility and nightlife in equal measure. During the week, mornings unfold slowly with coffee overlooking the water, afternoons drift between poolside loungers and private cabanas, and evenings settle into oceanfront dinners under the glow of San Juan’s skyline. On weekends, however, the mood noticeably shifts. DJs arrive. The pool deck buzzes. Guests gather around craft cocktails and sunset views as the property evolves into one of Condado’s most dynamic adults-only social scenes. The infinity pool is unquestionably the centerpiece. Stretching toward the Atlantic, it creates the illusion of flowing directly into the ocean beyond. The setup feels more akin to an upscale beach club than a traditional hotel pool area, particularly with The Deck offering cocktails, bites, cabanas and music throughout the day. The semi-private beachfront setting adds another layer to the experience, allowing guests to dip into the island’s tropical atmosphere without ever leaving the property. And yet, despite the vibrant social energy, Condado Ocean Club never feels chaotic. The adults-only concept works in its 38 MANN ABOUT TOWN • SEPTEMBER 2026

favor, creating an atmosphere that feels elevated, polished and intentionally curated rather than overwhelming. The design throughout the property mirrors that philosophy with sleek interiors, contemporary finishes, floor-to-ceiling windows and guestrooms that place the ocean or lagoon front and center. The location also makes the hotel particularly compelling. Guests are only minutes from Old San Juan, luxury shopping, nightlife, beaches and cultural attractions, while still maintaining the sense of having their own private enclave tucked into the Condado shoreline. It becomes easy to understand why many travelers arrive planning to explore the city extensively, only to find themselves lingering poolside longer than expected. While the beach club energy defines much of the property’s personality, dining plays an equally important role in shaping the experience, especially at Social, the hotel’s signature restaurant. Overlooking the ocean, Social blends Puerto Rican flavors with global influences in a setting that feels sophisticated yet approachable. It is the kind of restaurant where brunch can easily stretch into afternoon cocktails and dinner naturally turns into a late evening lingering over desserts and conversation. To better understand the philosophy behind both Condado Ocean Club and the on-site eatery Social, we spoke with Betsy Mujica, general manager of Condado Ocean Club. What type of traveler is Condado Ocean Club designed for? Condado Ocean Club is perfect for the modern traveler looking for a stylish, adults-only escape by the ocean. Our guests tend to be couples, solo travelers, friend groups, and young professionals and corporate groups seeking a relaxed yet elevated atmosphere, where great design, great service and great energy come together seamlessly. We cater to this audience by curating an experience that feels youthful, sophisticated, intimate and effortlessly social. Our oceanfront setting sets the tone with floor-to-ceiling water views, an infinity pool that flows into the Atlantic and contemporary rooms designed for comfort and connection.

Throughout the property, we emphasize personalized service, thoughtful programming and rich culinary experiences that include authentic Puerto Rican flavors at our signature restaurant Social. We provide the experience to match the lifestyle of our guests. What distinguishes the property’s top accommodations? The property offers 96 water view rooms. Our five Condado Ocean Balcony rooms, available in three king and two double queen bed configurations, are located on our third floor and feature a 160-square-foot furnished balcony. The Atlantic Terrace room is the largest room on property and includes a larger 282-square-foot furnished terrace. Each room offers stunning views of our infinity pool and the Atlantic Ocean. Your room special perks include early check-in and late check-out, subject to availability. How does the property balance relaxation with its energetic beach club vibe? We balance tranquility and energy by tailoring the experience to what our guests seek. During the week, the pool is all about recharging with ocean views, attentive yet low key service, and bites and cocktails from The Deck Bar. Guests can also enjoy the comfort of our private cabanas for a more exclusive retreat. On weekends, the atmosphere comes to life with curated events, DJs and signature experiences that showcase the Condado Ocean Club vibe while still delivering the elevated service our adults-only guests expect. How does the boutique hotel model create a more personalized experience? As a boutique hotel, we focus on creating genuine interactions, connecting with our guests and offering tailored recommendations that reflect the best experiences on the island. From the moment guests check in to even after they leave, we aim to elevate every interaction, creating memories they cannot get enough of to ensure their return visit. Our service is designed to feel authentic, personalized and uniquely reflective of our Condado Ocean Club lifestyle. SOCIAL: OCEANFRONT DINING WITH PUERTO RICAN SOUL

How does Social balance elevated dining with a laidback beach atmosphere?

At Social, we balance sophistication and approachability by celebrating the flavors of Puerto Rico alongside a curated selection of international dishes. Using fresh, local ingredients and creative presentations, our menu offers both bold, authentic flavors and familiar, globally inspired options. The result is a relaxed, oceanfront dining experience that allows guests to connect and truly be Social. Which dishes best showcase Puerto Rico’s flavors?

with dishes like Pastelón de Amarillo, a traditional meat casserole layered with sweet plantains and mozzarella, and Filete de Chillo, a fresh red snapper that can be enjoyed with a side of mofongo or tostones. Alongside these, we offer a variety of other locally inspired plates and bites that showcase the vibrant flavors and ingredients of Puerto Rico in a way that is both authentic and approachable. What role does Social play within the overall resort experience? Within Condado Ocean Club, Social plays a central role in the overall guest culinary experience. It allows our guests to indulge without leaving the property, whether it is for a leisurely breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. The restaurant’s vibrant ambiance, stunning ocean views and thoughtfully curated menu enhance the sense of comfort and sophistication, making it a destination in its own right while complementing the boutique, adults-only experience of the hotel. What ultimately separates Condado Ocean Club from so many luxury stays competing for attention across the Caribbean is its ability to feel simultaneously elevated and approachable. The property never leans too heavily into exclusivity or excess. Instead, it creates an environment that feels aspirational yet welcoming, energetic yet intimate, polished yet unmistakably connected to the culture and spirit of Puerto Rico itself. That balance becomes evident in every corner of the experience. Mornings begin with ocean breezes drifting through floor-to-ceiling windows and coffee overlooking the Atlantic. Afternoons revolve around The Deck, where the infinity pool, private cabanas, craft cocktails and beach club atmosphere effortlessly blur together. Evenings transition naturally into oceanfront dinners at Social, where Puerto Rican flavors, lively conversation, and the glow of San Juan’s nightlife create an atmosphere that feels both vibrant and deeply relaxed at the same time. Importantly, Condado Ocean Club also succeeds because it encourages travelers to experience Puerto Rico beyond the resort itself. Its central location places guests within easy reach of Old San Juan, Condado’s nightlife and dining scene, nearby beaches, lagoon adventures, rainforest excursions and the broader cultural heartbeat of the island. The hotel becomes less of a contained resort bubble and more of a sophisticated home base for discovering Puerto Rico through food, music, art, nightlife and local connection. For travelers increasingly searching for experiences that feel immersive rather than manufactured, Condado Ocean Club delivers something rare. It captures the modern Caribbean lifestyle fantasy without losing authenticity. Stylish without trying too hard. Social without becoming overwhelming. Luxurious without sacrificing warmth. In a destination already known for beauty and hospitality, Condado Ocean Club manages to stand out by making guests feel less like tourists and more like insiders fully plugged into the rhythm, flavor and energy of San Juan itself.

We celebrate Puerto Rico’s land and sea through our special menu section called “Sabores de Aquí,” meaning “Our Local Flavors.” This section highlights the island’s culinary heritage SEPTEMBER 2026 • MANN ABOUT TOWN 39

HEALTH & WELLNESS

ASK A PHARMACIST:

Before You Buy That Supplement By Dr. Sue Ojageer The supplement aisle has never been more crowded. From collagen powders and magnesium gummies to greens blends, probiotics and beauty capsules, Americans spend billions of dollars each year hoping to improve their health. Social media has only fueled the trend, with influencers promoting the latest “must-have” supplement for better sleep, glowing skin, weight management or longevity. As a pharmacist, I understand the appeal. Many supplements can play a valuable role in supporting health when they’re used appropriately. The challenge is separating science from marketing. Unlike prescription medications, dietary supplements are regulated differently in the United States. Many consumers are surprised to learn that supplements generally are not reviewed or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before they reach store shelves. Instead, manufacturers are responsible for ensuring their products are safe and accurately labeled. That makes it even more important for consumers to know what they're buying before adding another bottle to their daily routine. Every week, patients ask me whether a supplement is “worth taking.” My answer is rarely a simple yes or no. Instead, I encourage them to ask a few important questions.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Why am I taking this?

Is this right for my stage of life?

Every supplement should have a clear purpose.

Supplements are not one-size-fits-all.

Are you trying to correct a documented nutrient deficiency? Support bone health? Improve sleep? Fill a nutritional gap? Or are you buying it simply because it’s trending online?

Age, pregnancy, breastfeeding, chronic medical conditions and even lifestyle can influence whether a supplement is appropriate. Recommendations for a healthy young adult may differ significantly from those for an older adult managing multiple chronic conditions or someone taking several prescription medications.

Having a specific goal helps determine whether a supplement is appropriate and whether evidence supports its use.

What does the science actually say? A compelling testimonial or dramatic before-and-after photo is not the same as high-quality clinical research. Some supplements have strong evidence supporting specific uses, while others have limited or conflicting data. Benefits often depend on the right dosage, the specific formulation and the population being studied. What works for one person may not produce the same results for someone else.

Is it safe for me? One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that “natural” automatically means safe. In reality, herbal products, vitamins and minerals can interact with prescription medications and over-the-counter products. Some supplements may increase bleeding risk, affect blood sugar or blood pressure, interfere with thyroid medications or change how other medications are metabolized. These interactions aren’t always obvious, which is why I encourage patients to tell their healthcare providers about every supplement they take, even if it seems harmless.

Am I taking the right dose? More isnt always better. While it may seem logical that taking more will produce greater benefits, excessive amounts of certain vitamins and minerals can do more harm than good. Fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E and K can accumulate in the body over time, while excess amounts of certain minerals may lead to unwanted side effects. Following evidence-based dosing recommendations is far safer than assuming that if a little helps, more must be better.

Can I trust the product? Not all supplements are manufactured to the same quality standards. Whenever possible, I recommend looking for products that undergo independent third-party testing. Organizations such as the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) International evaluate certain products for quality, purity and label accuracy. While participation is voluntary and not every reputable company pursues certification, these seals can provide additional confidence that a product contains what the label claims.

Personalized healthcare should always take priority over generalized advice found online. Be skeptical of miracle claims. If a supplement promises to cure everything, it’s probably too good to be true. Good health rarely comes from a single pill or powder. Long-term wellness is built on balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, quality sleep, stress management and preventive healthcare. When appropriate, supplements should support those healthy habits—not replace them. Don’t forget one of your best healthcare resources. One of the greatest advantages patients have is access to their pharmacist. Community pharmacists are among the most accessible healthcare professionals and are uniquely trained to evaluate medications, identify drug interactions and help patients make informed decisions about supplements. A brief conversation at the pharmacy counter can often prevent unnecessary spending, reduce the risk of adverse effects and ensure a supplement fits safely into an individual’s overall healthcare plan. The supplement industry will continue to evolve, and new products will continue to capture public attention. While innovation can be exciting, popularity doesn’t always equal effectiveness. Before reaching for the latest trending supplement, pause and ask yourself a few simple questions: • • • •

Do I actually need this? Is there credible scientific evidence supporting it? Is it safe with my medications and health conditions? Is it made by a reputable manufacturer?

The answers to those questions may be far more valuable than any marketing claim on the label. As pharmacists, our role extends far beyond dispensing medications. We are educators, medication experts and trusted healthcare professionals who help patients navigate an increasingly complex healthcare marketplace. Sometimes the best investment in your health isn’t buying another supplement, it’s asking the right questions first.

MEET SOMATIKA Miami-based somatic guide and relationship healer Liat Berko launches Somatika—a breakthrough movement experience that takes people out of their heads and back into their bodies. In a wellness landscape crowded with fitness classes, meditation apps and performancedriven practices, something genuinely different has arrived. Somatika, the somatic movement experience created by Miami-based guide and healer Liat Berko, is drawing sold-out circles of people seeking something the traditional wellness world rarely offers: permission to fully feel. Somatika is not a dance class. It is not a workout. It is not yoga. It is a guided somatic experience combining free movement, curated music, breathwork and vocal release that guides participants out of the thinking mind and into the intelligence of the body. In a single hour, people shake loose what they have been carrying, regulate their nervous system, activate their voice and reconnect to a sense of aliveness that most did not realize they had lost. “So many of us have spent years living in our heads,” said Berko. “Thinking, doing, giving and somewhere along the way, we stop listening to our own bodies. Somatika is the space to come back. Not to perform, not to look a certain way but to genuinely feel.”

46 MANN ABOUT TOWN • SEPTEMBER 2026

With over two decades of experience working at the intersection of body, consciousness and human connection, Berko has developed a unique approach that blends somatic movement, breathwork, vocal activation and spiritual wisdom into a single coherent practice. Her work is rooted in the belief that real transformation does not begin in the mind—it begins in the body. This philosophy extends beyond individual practice into the heart of her work with couples. Berko is one of Miami’s most sought-after relationship healers, guiding couples at every stage of their journey, from those seeking to deepen an already loving connection to those navigating distance, disconnection or the quiet erosion that life can bring to even the strongest partnerships. “Most couples come to me thinking the problem is communication,” said Berko. “And yes, we work on that. But what I really guide them toward is embodied connection and the ability to feel each other again. To be present with each other, not just in conversation but in the body, in energy, in the space between them.” Her approach with couples draws on somatic bodywork, the dance of masculine and feminine energies, and a process she calls the Euphoria

A Guide Who Works From the Inside Out

Method—a multidimensional framework for love, intimacy and conscious relating that she has developed over years of deep personal and professional experience. “A relationship is a living thing,” said Berko. “It needs to be felt, not just managed. When couples reconnect to their bodies individually and together, something shifts that no amount of talking can achieve.” The results speak for themselves. Clients describe her sessions as transformative not because she tells them what to do but because she creates a space where they can finally feel what is true.

Somatika—Where the Individual Work Begins Somatika is the natural extension of this philosophy into group practice. If the couples work is about reconnecting two people to each other, Somatika is about reconnecting each person to themselves first. “You cannot fully show up for another person if you are not at home in your own body,” said Berko. “Somatika is where that journey begins.” The practice made its public debut on a major stage earlier this year when Namaste Life Events invited Berko to lead two Somatika classes at the Yoga Day Miami Expo, one of them an exclusive VIP session. Both classes sold out. What happened in the room surprised even Berko. Participants arrived with their yoga mats, accustomed to following structured instruction. Berko gave them something entirely different—no choreography, no steps to follow; just music, breath and an invitation to step off the mat and move freely through the space.

“I encouraged them to break through the mat,” said Berko. "To trust what their body wanted to do. And one by one, they did. Bodies expanding into the room. Arms rising. People shaking loose things they had been carrying for a very long time. Dancing like no one was watching. That’s Somatika.” The response was immediate and overwhelming. Attendees who had never heard of somatic movement left transformed and asking when the next class would be.

What People Say “The feelings of happiness, connection and freedom were just WOW. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. You should all try the Somatika experience—you won’t regret it.” — Aline Chemla, Local Guide · Google Review “The moment you step into Liat’s class, you begin a journey to yourself. The music is incredible, guiding you gently at first, then building into something powerfully vibrant that carries you deeper within. It’s a beautiful practice that helps you release, let go and grow stronger in your soul.” — Claudia Dornbusch · Google Review “This class is addictive and fuels your soul.” — Galit Savir · Google Review

The Somatika Experience Each Somatika session is limited to 16 participants, creating an intimate container for genuine release and connection. Sessions are held at partner wellness studios across Miami, with multiple locations and times available. The practice is open to all, no movement experience required, no performance expected. A typical session moves through five stages: arrival and grounding, somatic breathwork, free movement and release, vocal activation through chanting and toning, and a closing integration. Participants are encouraged to come as they are, comfortable clothing, bare feet and a willingness to feel.

ARTS & AFFAIRS

Al Burts:

Dignity Arrives Dressed BY AVALON ASHLEY BELLOS Through line, collage and an instinctive command of style, Al Burts transforms the American portrait into an intimate act of witness. Clothing is rarely merely clothing in an Al Burts portrait. A jacket becomes geography, a hat assumes the authority of a crown and patterned cloth carries the hush of a grandmother’s house, the cultivated swagger of a Sunday afternoon and the stubborn, quietly glamorous fact of survival. Burts understands what fashion has always known, even when art history has occasionally pretended otherwise: presentation is not necessarily vanity. For people repeatedly denied control over how they are seen, style can become authorship, armor, memory and, rather deliciously, pleasure. I have never had much patience for the critical superstition that beauty becomes intellectually suspect the moment it is pleasurable. Burts appears equally uninterested in such limitations. Working across ballpoint pen, colored pencil, charcoal, oil and collage, he creates portraits that move between exquisite draftsmanship and a gloriously tactile accumulation of material. His figures do not simply occupy space; they arrive carrying histories stitched, folded and layered across their bodies. Born in 1967 and shaped by Washington, D.C., and Alexandria, Virginia, Burts studied at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, pursued fashion illustration at Virginia Commonwealth University and completed drawing studies at the Corcoran. He later worked at the National Gallery of Art, perhaps sharpening his awareness of how institutions determine whose faces are preserved and remembered. Drawing gives his subjects psychological gravity, while fashion supplies a language of silhouette, pattern and self-possession. His portraiture gently refuses sentimentality and spectacle. Burts has addressed homelessness, migration, religion and the ordinary struggles of American life, often rendering people whose dignity is socially overlooked. In “Neglected Weed,” a series of largescale portraits created with ballpoint pen, colored pencil and charcoal, he approached homelessness without surrendering tenderness or complexity. The title suggests a life dismissed as undesirable, something growing where society would rather not look, yet Burts chooses to look with patience and care. He is not polishing hardship into a more palatable beauty. He is insisting, rather quietly, that beauty was never absent. Portraiture can so easily turn deprivation into visual consumption, asking the viewer to admire suffering from the safe distance of a gallery wall. Burts resists that transaction, allowing his subjects interiority, humor, fatigue, faith, vanity and an unmistakable command of themselves. I remain somewhat suspicious of an art world that appears more comfortable inviting Black suffering into the room than Black pleasure. Burts, quite beautifully, refuses that bargain. He permits solemnity, eccentricity, weariness and fabulousness to occupy the same frame. His subjects are not sociological evidence; they are 50 MANN ABOUT TOWN • SEPTEMBER 2026

people, which should not be a radical proposition, although museums have occasionally behaved as though it were. The title “The Fabric of Us,” used for one of Burts’s solo presentations, offers an apt thesis for the broader practice. Fabric is material, naturally, although it is also memory, status, inheritance, cultural code and the human desire to decide how one will enter the world. In Burts’ portraits, textiles feel alive, recording the private histories from which a self is made. In “Many Threads,” a poised woman in oversized glasses, a head wrap and a coat assembled from colliding patterns becomes a walking archive. Her presentation is magnificent without becoming frivolous, while each surface contains a separate rhythm that contributes to a portrait of identity as layered rather than fixed. The Dude grants its silver-bearded subject a similarly luxurious excess of woven textures, florals and checks. There is wit in the work, certainly, yet also tenderness, and the abundance gathers around the figure like accumulated experience rather than overwhelming him. His religious imagery deepens that inquiry. In “Sacred Commodity,” a child holds a branch of cotton against a delicately distressed ground. Cotton appears soft and nearly devotional, yet no American viewer can honestly approach it as a neutral botanical. The title binds sanctity to commerce and innocence to an economic history that treated Black life as property. Burts allows tenderness and indictment to coexist without permitting either to dilute the other. Perhaps that is one of his most compelling abilities. He does not force complexity into dramatic opposition. Beauty and grief do not cancel one another, faith can contain doubt and clothing can be both protection and performance. History enters the portrait without consuming the person who stands before us. Burts has said that he can create “pretty,” although he prefers conversational pieces. That distinction captures his achievement. The work is undeniably beautiful, sometimes extravagantly so, yet beauty functions as an opening rather than an escape. Color seduces the eye, texture slows it down and the figure, once encountered, gently refuses to be consumed quickly. We live in a visual culture that asks faces to become content and identities to become instantly legible. Burts restores a more generous pace to looking, asking us to remain with someone long enough for our first assumptions to become inadequate. At a moment when the art world can confuse visibility with justice and fashion with frivolity, he offers a more humane proposition: To be seen beautifully is not to be softened but to be seen whole. In his hands, dignity is neither neutral nor quiet. It arrives dressed. Al Burts’s work is on view at Gallery Guichard: galleryguichard.com. For more art and luxury, follow avalonashley.com.

jillphotography As a photographer, I’m drawn to the details that easily go unnoticed—the way light falls across a face, a fleeting expression, a quiet moment between people or the small elements that give a place its character. I pay attention to the inbetween moments and subtle details that make an image feel honest and personal. Photography, for me, is about slowing down enough to really see what’s there and finding meaning in the moments others might pass by. Which, as a fast-paced NYC girl, goes strictly against my DNA. But, in my former cheerleading days, “Stop, look and listen” sets the tone for a dichotomy. Harmonize your imagery with Jill Lotenberg of Jillphotography. @jillphotography.com

MICHAEL LIMAN is a New York–based street photographer and visual storyteller whose work captures the layered, ever-evolving spirit of urban life. New York reveals itself as a city where mythology is built into the brickwork. From the timeless corner of Fanelli Cafe in SoHo, where a couple dines on a sidewalk as the city rushes past, to the ornate Victorian ironwork of the Hotel Chelsea looming over West 23rd Street, to the weathered neon of Nathan's Famous rising proudly above Coney Island’s Surf Avenue, Downtown, a curved glass tower dissolves the surrounding skyline into a shimmering reflection, folding old New York and new into a single surface. While in Hudson Yards, a rhythmic procession of crossed beams pulls the eye through a covered walkway leading onto the High Line. And then, because this is New York, two women materialize on Fifth Avenue in matching flower-crowned hats and oversized daisy sunglasses, grinning broadly, clearly having planned every detail—a reminder that the city’s greatest spectacle has always been its people. @michael_liman_photography | Michael.liman.photo@gmail.com

B&W International Photography Awards (2026) for “Space Man” and “Girl on Orchard,” Liman explores what he calls “settings within settings,” moments where people, architecture and time converge to reveal the quiet rhythms and hidden narratives of the city. Born in Brooklyn and raised on Long Island, he works in both film and digital, in color and black-and-white, with a focus on place, memory and the passage of time. His first project, “The Sands of Summer,” documents the vibrant yet fleeting life of Atlantic Beach, New York, capturing the warmth, nostalgia and human rituals of the summer season. This early work laid the foundation for Liman’s enduring interest in place, memory and the passage of time. His acclaimed book, “NYC Streets,” is a portrait of Manhattan as a living, breathing organism always changing yet timeless, filled with countless untold stories. From crowded intersections to forgotten corners, Liman’s photographs highlight the interplay between presence and memory, documenting how the smallest gestures and

interactions shape the city’s collective identity. Liman contributes monthly to Mann About Town, a leading lifestyle magazine where he presents ongoing visual narratives of New York City. He is also developing additional long-term projects: one centered on Coney Island, exploring themes of transformation and continuity within Brooklyn’s iconic seaside landscape; another set in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, where Liman turns his lens toward the vast American landscape, examining the relationship between natural beauty, solitude and the human impulse to explore and preserve. With more than 45 years in the television and motion picture industry, Liman brings a cinematic sensibility to his still photography, combining narrative insight with technical precision. Beyond his work behind the camera, he is an avid collector of Leica cameras and lenses, as well as Hasselblad and Rolleiflex systems, drawing inspiration from the enduring craftsmanship and history of photographic design.

udy Glickman Lauder has spent a lifetime looking closely at the world through the lens of a camera. She has achieved a rare distinction as both a renowned photographer whose work is in major collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, and also as a prolific collector with over 700 images by legends like Sebastião Salgado, Margaret Bourke-White and Henri Cartier-Bresson. As both photographer and collector, she has devoted herself to preserving human stories, embodied by a deep sense of empathy, historical awareness and faith in photography’s power to record human experience. Also an author, philanthropist, humanitarian and activist, one major facet of Glickman Lauder’s own photographic work has been the Holocaust.

COVER FEATURE Southampton Arts Center: AFA Touring Exhibition

Her dynamic, pensive collection is currently being explored at Southampton Arts Center in the exhibition, “Presence: The Photography Collection of Judy Glickman Lauder,” up through September 27. Each image in the show represents a human presence. “It’s a human spirit, so there’s not a lot of landscape or abstract,” Glickman Lauder said. Comprising over 100 images by 50 different artists, including some of her own, the exhibit is arranged into eight thematic sections, from social documentary to Surrealism to street photography, all signifying the idea of presence. Curated by Anjuli Lebowitz, the Judy Glickman Lauder curator of photography at the Portland Museum of Art in Maine, and co-organized by the American Federation of Arts (AFA), the exhibit will travel to Sarasota, Florida; Charleston, South Carolina, and Miami, Florida.

“

Being there and seeing the evidence of what happened really turned me all around. — JUDY GLICKMAN LAUDER

Accompanying the meditative show, Glickman Lauder has recently published “Presence,” a book that covers her collection, including hundreds of photographs not included in the exhibition. “It’s been fun but daunting to narrow down which pictures would be included in both the exhibit and the book. AFA is an incredible organization, bringing so many art forms all over the nation,” Glickman Lauder said. “The people I have worked with are really good, and the Southampton Arts Center did a super job. And so I'm thrilled about it.” The Delicacies of Representing Atrocity

Glickman Lauder considers her work dealing with the Holocaust, and specifically the Danish rescue of Jews during WWII, a defining feature of her photography career. Active in Jewish causes, she once took the opportunity for a two-day visit to Auschwitz and Birkenau on the way to Israel. “Being there and seeing the evidence of what happened really turned me all around,” she said. Though she was born in California, Glickman Lauder’s family was from Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine, where 90% of Jewish individuals were killed during World War II. She said, “I realized when I went to those camps that probably many of my family had perished there. And that became kind of a mission.”

The Danish Rescue

Over a three-year period, she returned to the Holocaust sites, photographing at eight different concentration camps, the railroad tracks, the crematoriums, the memorials, the areas of cities where there previously had been large Jewish ghettos. Based on that body of work, Glickman Lauder was invited to go to Denmark in 1990 to try to put together an exhibit commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Danish rescue, which took place in 1943. In Denmark, she was able to contact survivors who gave her names and addresses of rescuers. “I was on actual fishing boats that crossed over the sound from Denmark to Sweden, because by ’43, Sweden was willing to risk its neutrality and allow the Jewish population to come in,” Glickman Lauder said. “And it’s just an amazing story of both countries. I have a book called ‘Beyond the Shadows,’ which tells the story of both the Holocaust and the Danish rescue. Everyone needs to know that story, especially in today’s world because man can make a difference and man can retain humanity in difficult times.” The book includes texts by Holocaust scholars, Jewish Danish survivors and an original piece by Elie Wiesel, author of the world-renowned memoir “Night,” who had seen Glickman Lauder’s work. 62 MANN ABOUT TOWN • SEPTEMBER 2026

COVER FEATURE A Wide-reaching Body of Work

Glickman Lauder has held over 200 exhibits of her body of work at universities, libraries, museums, temples and churches all over the world. In addition to major museums like the Getty, her work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of the Martyrs in Paris, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in D.C., the Jewish Museum in New York, The Israel Museum and Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust, the Danish Jewish Museum and many more. “My work is all over the place, and I speak and show images. I speak at openings, I speak to classrooms,” said Glickman Lauder. She added, “The Holocaust is a bit heavy for young children, but by the fifth grade they have some knowledge, and many have read a book called ‘Number the Stars’ by Lois Lowry, which is about the Danish rescue.” Io non ho mani che mi accarezzino il volto (There Are No Hands to Caress My Face) (1961-63) Photo by Mario Giacomelli Courtesy of Archivio Mario Giacomelli, Simone Giacomelli

Today’s Rise in Antisemitism

While the bulk of her Holocaust work took place in the 1990s, Glickman Lauder is stunned at the rise in global antisemitism in the present-day. “It's unbelievable that it’s happening and it’s happening so fast,” she said. “I think we have kind of a scarcity of really inspiring, wonderful leaders in our world today and it’s showing. So even though my work has been shown in so many places, most were maybe 20 years ago or so. And at universities, these are different students, and perhaps I should be doing a little bit more again.” She had recently attended a memorial for a Holocaust survivor who lives in Maine, where she spends part of each year. The survivor had approached her at her exhibit at Bowdoin College in the 1990s and told her his story. He had been a hidden child, and, inspired by her work, said he thought it was time for him to speak out. Glickman Lauder introduced him to the Holocaust Human Rights Center in Maine, and he became one of its major speakers over 20-odd years. “He had a wonderful way about him, and of course, an incredible story that people related to. So going to his memorial kind of inspired me to do more,” said Glickman Lauder. Philanthropy and Family

Glickman Lauder is active in many philanthropic causes including mental health, environmental issues, homelessness, hunger and those related to Judaism. She is active in arts organizations including the Met, the Getty and her beloved Portland Museum of Art to which she has donated her photo collection. Her devotion to supporting humanity also turns inward to her family—she has four children and 16 adult grandchildren. “I have four rabbis in my immediate family,” she said. “My oldest son, my youngest son, my daughter-in-law, and now, my oldest son’s youngest son, my grandson, will be ordained next May.” All are reform rabbis through the Hebrew Union College. “I'm so proud of them all. And I'm very, very big on Jewish causes all over the world. And it’s especially important right now.” Collecting and Photography Career Simultaneously

When asked which came first, collecting or shooting photos, she said, “I've been doing both for 50 years. Wow.” Glickman Lauder had a head start in the field. While her father was a doctor, his SEPTEMBER 2026 • MANN ABOUT TOWN 63

COVER FEATURE passion was the arts and especially photography. He was president of the Oakland Camera Club, a fellow of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain, and won over 80 awards. Some of his friends were famous photographers like Ansel Adams and Edward Weston, and as a child, Judy accompanied him to watch them shoot. And she spent time in her father’s dark room seeing pictures magically appear. Later on, in the 1970s, her father bought her a real 35mm camera, and she took classes at the University of Central Los Angeles (UCLA) and elsewhere. “I became hooked and I never stopped,” said Glickman Lauder. While at UCLA she was a docent when the photo collection of Graham Nash of Crosby Stills Nash and Young was displayed at the school’s New Wight Gallery. “I saw his collection, and I saw things I’d never seen before. And that started me going to galleries and museums, and auctions. I wanted to see more,” she said. At that time, photography had not yet become a popular art form and was affordable. One of the first pieces she bought was one she’d seen in the Graham Nash collection, “Small Woods Where I Met Myself ” by Jerry Uelsmann. (This 1967 photograph is also in the Museum of Modern Art’s collection.) “It’s three images of his wife. And it’s positive, it’s negative, it’s solarized, it’s magical,” she said. “And I was entranced, I walked into the G. Ray Hawkins Gallery in Los Angeles and there it was. And it was affordable. And so that really started my collecting. So both were really very simultaneous.” “I didn’t mean to be a career photographer, and I didn’t mean to be a collector,” she added. “But I understand that that’s the same story with most collectors. You kind of start out and then it happens. And so I’ve been steadily photographing and steadily collecting for, as I said, over 50 years.” judyglickmanlauder.com

RAINS Completes Wardrobe Offering With Footwear Launch

“

We’ve been asked about Rains boots since the beginning, but we wanted to do it right. The development started back in 2024. It’s taken time to find the right shape and construction. We wanted to perfect the formula because we see the Dry Boot standing alongside our other signature designs for many years to come—Hilo Weekend Bag, Long Jacket, Suva, and now, The Dry Boot. It makes sense. Ultimately, my goal is that Rains is as known for our footwear as for our outerwear. After recently introducing ready-to-wear, this feels like we are finally completing the wardrobe.

FASHION SPOTLIGHT Rains launched its first ever footwear category with the introduction of The Dry Boot and Mirage—contemporary rubber rain boots and shoes designed for life in the city. Following several successful collaborations with the likes of Umbro, Zellerfeld and Vans, Rains’ ownbrand footwear launched globally in stores and online on August 5th, 2026, a release that marked a defining milestone for the brand as it expands its signature waterproof designs beyond apparel. The launch is Rains’ first official step into this product category, with clean, architectural silhouettes that combine waterproof protection with sculptural minimalism. Designed to become a long-term icon within the Rains ecosystem, the style establishes the foundation for Rains Footwear and reflects the brand’s continued evolution into a complete lifestyle offering. Built from the same philosophy that has defined Rains since its launch in 2012, The Dry Boot and Mirage concept are rooted in three core principles: • Waterproof protection designed for urban environments • An anatomical, sculpted shape made exclusively for Rains by Martin Sallières • Comfort and wearability across wet or dry climates Designed for movement through modern city life, the footwear is engineered to support long days on your feet while adapting across different settings, from commuting to daily walks and biking; it’s a hardworking all-weather shoe. Today, Rains’ mission remains unchanged: to inspire urban exploration. What began with contemporary rainwear has evolved into a broader design universe spanning ready-to-wear, footwear, bags and homeware, all created for a life lived in unpredictable conditions. Retail launches will be supported with in-store installations, featuring a larger-than-life sculpture of the Dry Boot whereby customers will be encouraged to write their personal recommendations for their city directly on to it. Said thoughts and feelings will then be packaged into a City Guide by the people, for the people. “We’ve been asked about Rains boots since the beginning, but we wanted to do it right. “Rain boots often ask you to compromise, they can be uncomfortable or forgettable. The Dry Boot doesn’t. It's a rubber boot designed for all-day wear: waterproof, cushioned, easy on and off, and with a silhouette that works in the city. The outsole is distinctly ours. Inspired by New York’s grid blocks, it’s functional on wet or dry streets,” said Johanne Dindler, chief designer. Rains Footwear has launched globally in stores and online.

Audace Ristorante

A Quiet Standout in New York’s Italian Dining Scene

Audace Ristorante, Italian for bold, is the name owner Mario Ursumando chose for his first restaurant in New York City, a tribute to the city’s energy, ambition and relentless rhythm. Opened in 2024 within the intimate dining room of the Giraffe Hotel NoMad, Audace has quietly remained one of NoMad’s best-kept secrets, serving some of the neighborhood’s best regional Italian cuisine. The menu celebrates generations of family recipes alongside awardwinning contemporary Neapolitan-style pizzas and a sophisticated cocktail bar. Mario, a native of Naples, Italy, began his career at just 18 years old as a bartender at one of Naples’ premier bars. He later expanded his experience in London before joining the hospitality program at EPCOT’s Italy Pavilion at Walt Disney World in Florida. T AV O L A HELL’S KITCHEN Fine Italian Cuisine

Chef and restaurateur Nick Accardi helped redefine Hell’s Kitchen’s dining scene when he opened Tavola in the former Manganaro’s Grosseria Italiana space in 2012. He painstakingly restored it, preserving many historic details, including the 100-year-old stainless steel front doors, wooden grocery shelves, lighting and leather belt-driven ceiling fans. Today, Tavola proudly carries forward the rich culinary legacy of the beloved 130-year-old Italian landmark, preserving its authentic neighborhood charm while honoring generations of tradition. Tavola has become a longtime favorite among locals and visitors alike. The restaurant is celebrated for its warm hospitality and authentic regional Italian cuisine. Accardi has long been part of New York’s culinary evolution, opening his first restaurant, Cola’s, in Chelsea in 1988. His culinary training began early through apprenticeships with Basque and Italian chefs, and the influences of his relatives, who treated food as both craft and way of life. from his travels throughout Puglia, Rome and Sicily—particularly Castelvetrano, the Sicilian town at the heart of his family heritage. Blending regional Italian traditions with decades of culinary experience, he creates dishes that celebrate both his roots and his journey. At the heart of Tavola is a 7000-pound double wood-burning oven, handcrafted in Naples, Italy, using volcanic clay sourced from Mount Vesuvius. Two ovens allow for the possibility of cooking at more than one temperature. One oven is certified 850 degrees Vera Pizza Napoletana, while the other is carefully calibrated for cooking, meats, fish, vegetables and wild game, including Rabbit Cacciatore and Lamb Francesca. Chef Accardi maintains long-standing relationships with local purveyors such as Esposito’s Meat Market, Sea Breeze Fish, Pat LaFrida and Buon’Italia, affording him the opportunity to create fresh daily menu specials based on market availability.

ON THE TABLE

Tavola’s Signature Dishes Tavola specializes in handcrafted pasta, featuring: • Gnocchi Trapanese – famously “light as a cloud” • Lasagna Bolognese Mozzarella di Bufala • Pappardelle with Wild Boar and Porcini Mushroom Ragù The menu also highlights family recipes and Sicilian specialties, including: • Nick’s Grandmother’s Classic Caponata Pistachio Pesto Trapanese • Saffron Veal Ragù Arancini Seasonal and rotating specialties may include: • Wood Oven – Roasted Whole Branzino • Double Center Cut Wood Roasted Pork Chop • Portuguese Sardines

Tavola’s signature pizza selection includes: • Margherita – classic leopard-charred crust • The Vendetta Sarda – wild boar sausage and wild mushrooms • The Medina – figs, sesame, sheep’s milk Gorgonzola and herbs, inspired by Sicily’s Arab culinary heritage • Cacio e Pepe – with Sicilian Pecorino • Clam Pizza – vongole and fresh herbs

John Stamos “Full House” icon John Stamos, who stars in Danny DeVito’s new blockbuster, “Drag,” opened up about his botched nose job in the 80s, confiding that he went to Michael Jackson’s surgeon, Dr. Steven Hoefflin, to get it fixed. “I was on ‘General Hospital,’ and I just didn’t like the way it looked, and so I got it done, and it didn’t look great,” he told Bobbi Althoff on “The Really Good Podcast” in August. The actor has also said, “Who better to handle the delicate task of resculpting my nose than the man who created a whole new face for M.J.?” Stamos’ confession has brought the conversation around nose surgery, one of the country’s most popular procedures for kids as young as 16 and adults, back into the spotlight. Dr. Luis Macias, who practices in Marina del Rey, California, said, “Most revision patients aren’t looking for perfection. They’re looking for restoration of balance, function and confidence.” aestheticmdr.com

HARRIET NEWMAN COHEN Is Taking Charge of the Narrative By Sofia Marretta

Harriet Newman Cohen

90 MANN ABOUT TOWN • SEPTEMBER 2026

MANN OF THE HOUR Harriet Newman Cohen is no stranger to success. At 93 years old, she is a formidable presence in New York’s matrimonial courts, and her firm, Cohen Stine Kapoor LLP, remains a fixture in the city’s legal landscape, handling the kind of complex divorces that make headlines but require discretion. Her latest endeavor, a memoir titled “Passion and Power: A Life in Three Worlds,” published by Bloomsbury this spring, has been no exception. A STORIED CAREER “Passion and Power” is anything but dry legalese. It pulses with human drama and hard-won insight. She examines three cases in detail, each story underscoring the humanity behind the courtroom battles. “Stories are what the world is about,” she said. “My memoir is full of stories.” Her passion for the law and belief in justice led her to tell her clients’ stories authentically. “I fall in love with my clients,” she said. “I have to. Their story becomes my story.” Her approach blends strategy and intuition, serving as part general, part therapist. “When the seas are rough, I can’t break down. I have to keep the ship moving.” Audiences have responded to the memoir with reverence and appreciation, praising Cohen for her strength and vulnerability. Critics at Air Mail wrote, “Come for the stories about what can constitute a favorable outcome in a settlement, and stay for the personal details about a life well lived and well loved.” Pulitzer-Prize-winning journalist Carl Bernstein commends her “elegance and grit,” calling the book “riveting.” The enthralling book debut landed Cohen an invite to the 22nd annual East Hampton Library Authors Night, the premier starstudded literary event of the Hamptons, as one of the night’s celebrated authors. As attendees mingled with the authors and enjoyed the refreshments during the reception, they had the chance to get their copies of “Passion and Power” personally signed. The premier literary event provided a space for Cohen to connect with those who have resonated with her journey.

A TRAILBLAZER IN HER FIELD In the 1970s, divorce law in New York was still very much a man’s world. Cohen describes her break into the field as “just fortuitous or divine or spiritual that I was in the right place at the right time.” She explained, “I had gone into law school at a time when the only woman you saw in the law school was the secretary.” Her new memoir explores that era’s gender barriers with frankness and humor, tracing her evolution from housewife to advocate. “I wanted to tell my story because the world I grew up in doesn’t exist anymore,” she said. “And I remember it all.” By the 1980s, she was one of New York’s most sought-after matrimonial attorneys, working on high-stakes cases involving powerful, wealthy clients like Tom Brady, Andrew Cuomo and Alison Stern. Now in her 90s, Cohen still practices law and mentors younger attorneys. She co-founded her current firm with her long-time partner, Martha Cohen Stine, who is her oldest daughter, and with Ankit Kapoor. Harriet Newman Cohen’s “Passion and Power” takes readers through various seasons of life, from the “man’s world” of the 1950s to the present, where the definition of family keeps expanding. At a time when many would retire, Cohen refuses to back down. Her step into authorhood marks another new season: one where she is taking charge of the narrative. For more information about Harriet, visit her website at csklawny.com. To learn more about “Passion and Power,” visit bloomsbury.com.

FROM HOMEMAKER TO LEGAL EAGLE Cohen’s story begins at Barnard College, where she graduated in 1952 with a degree in Latin, a minor in music and no intention of pursuing a legal career. “I really, truly felt in my heart in those days that I wanted to be at home, I wanted to be a mother, I wanted to be the one who managed the household, I wanted my husband to succeed. That’s the way I felt in 1952,” she told Barnard College President Laura A. Rosenbury at a fireside chat. The intimate discussion at her alma mater was a full-circle moment for her, highlighting how far she has come and how much the field has evolved. After earning a master’s degree from Bryn Mawr College, she was devoted to homemaking. As years passed, dissatisfaction crept in, and she decided it was time to carve her own path. Cohen told President Rosunbury, “I realized I had to make a difference. I had to make myself feel the way I knew I wanted to feel.” While Cohen was resolute on going to law school at 38, her mother expressed concerns. But ever determined, Cohen told her mother, “If you feel that my marriage is so fragile that Phil is going to leave me if I go to law school, I’d better go to law school because it sounds like I have a divorce coming.” With four daughters to support, Cohen enrolled in Brooklyn Law School, where she earned her Juris Doctor (JD) with honors and joined the Law Review.

Dr. Michael Cohen

IS EMBRACING THE ERA OF SUBTLE AND TAILORED SURGERY BY JEREMY MURPHY

MANN OF THE HOUR Dr. Michael Cohen doesn’t just perform plastic surgery, he refines it. After more than three decades in practice and thousands of procedures spanning the face, body and breasts, the founder and medical director of Belcara Health has built a reputation rooted not in flash, but in consistency, precision and trust. In an industry often driven by trends and visibility, Cohen has taken a different path: one defined by experience, artistry and a deeply personal understanding of what patients actually want.

A STRONG FOUNDATION “I’ve been in practice 30 years and done probably thousands of breast cases,” he said matter-of-factly, having just finished a full day of seeing patients in his Baltimore office. His tone was relaxed, almost understated, but the scope of his work is anything but. Board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons and a longstanding member of leading professional societies, Cohen has been named a Top Doctor by Baltimore Magazine for more than a decade, recognition that comes not from marketing but from peers. His career, however, didn’t begin where it is now. Trained at Stanford University Medical Center, with additional surgical education at Boston University and Tulane, Cohen initially focused heavily on reconstructive surgery. “I used to do a lot of breast reconstruction with implants, with flaps,” he explained. That foundation, technical, meticulous, and often complex, continues to inform his work today.

WHAT’S CHANGED About 15 years ago, Cohen made a deliberate shift. “I transitioned to mostly aesthetic breast surgery,” he said. That includes augmentations, lifts, reductions and increasingly, revision procedures, a category he now specializes in. These are patients who had surgery years ago and are returning with new needs shaped by time, life changes and evolving preferences. “A lot of patients come in, they’ve had their implants 15, 20 years. They’ve aged, they’ve had babies,” he said. “There’s always something that can be done.” What’s changed most, according to Cohen, is not the technology but the desired style based on current trends. “People are downsizing,” he said. The exaggerated aesthetic that once dominated the market is giving way to something more restrained, more athletic, more in line with how people actually live. “These are patients doing yoga, Pilates, running. They want a small breast that looks natural.” It’s a shift driven as much by culture as by medicine. “Just like everything, bell bottoms were big in the ’70s, then they weren’t,” he said. “Now people are into health and well-being. It’s a lifestyle.” The

goal, increasingly, is subtlety: a body that feels balanced, proportionate and authentic.

A KEEN, TRUSTED EYE Cohen embraces that evolution and, in many ways, anticipated it. “I have an art background. I love design, interior design,” he said. “You could even say I’m an exterior designer; I’m designing people’s bodies.” It’s a line he delivers with a hint of humor, but it underscores something essential about his approach. For Cohen, surgery is not just technical, it’s visual. “I know what natural looks like,” he said. “And I don’t just use that as a calling card.” That perspective, combined with decades of experience, has helped him cultivate a practice built largely on loyalty and word-of-mouth. “A majority of the patients I see these days are return patients or referrals,” he said. He recounted a recent example: a woman who flew in from Florida, despite having no shortage of local options, because, as she told him, “I wouldn’t let anybody other than you touch me.” He had performed her surgery 13 years earlier.

SCALING DOWN AND STEPPING INTO YOURSELF Cohen’s connection to his patients is also personal. An athlete himself, he competes in triathlons, he understands the priorities of a growing subset of patients who want results that align with active lifestyles. “I know what athletes want,” he said. That includes procedures that are less invasive, require less anesthesia and offer quicker recovery, factors that are increasingly central to patient decision-making. One example is Preservé, a minimally invasive breast augmentation technique that Cohen, along with a small group of surgeons nationwide, is trained to perform. It allows for more natural-looking outcomes with less disruption to the body, reflecting the broader shift in the field. Looking ahead, Cohen sees innovation continuing along that same trajectory. “More natural, less invasive,” he said. Emerging technologies, from advanced skin-tightening devices to new approaches in fat grafting, are expanding what’s possible without dramatically altering the patient. But for all the advances, his core philosophy remains unchanged. “I’d rather look like a better version of myself,” he said, “than some other person nobody recognizes.” It’s a sentiment that resonates beyond the operating room, and one that helps explain why, in a field crowded with noise, Dr. Michael Cohen’s work continues to stand out. Not because it demands attention but because it earns it. belcarahealth.com
