Our Story

Page 1

One of the Philadelphia region’s leading cultural and civic assets, the Mann Center for the Performing Arts has presented world-class performing artists of diverse musical genres in Fairmount Park for decades. The original Dell, an open-air facility constructed in 1930, was a beloved campus but beset by problems, including frequent rainouts and distracting traffic noise from the nearby Schuylkill Expressway, which opened in 1958. The new campus addressed these issues and provided Philadelphians with a modern, first-class facility to enjoy music under the stars.

Built in 1976 as Philadelphia and the nation were preparing to celebrate the United States Bicentennial, this new campus with an approximate capacity of about 14,000 became the largest covered music and arts campus in Philadelphia. Just three years later, the Robin Hood Dell West was renamed the Mann Music Center in Fredric Mann’s honor, and subsequently renamed the Mann Center for the Performing Arts. The Mann has continued to host annual Philadelphia Orchestra concerts and serves more than 200,000 patrons annually through a diverse line-up of world-class artists, touring companies, and popular and contemporary musicians.

MISSION, VISION, AND VALUES

MISSION

The Mann Center for the Performing Arts – situated in historic Fairmount Park with breathtaking views of Philadelphia’s skyline –serves as one of the nation’s premier non-profit and intercultural outdoor performing arts organizations by:

• Creating, presenting, promoting, convening, and collaborating on a broad spectrum of high-quality, compelling, welcoming, and inspiring entertainment experiences in its acclaimed multi-stage campus;

• Providing leadership in arts education through innovative and high-impact, collaborative educational activities for young people throughout the Philadelphia region;

• Fulfilling the expectations of 21st-century audiences by embracing multimedia platforms;

• Being a deeply valued civic asset to everyone in the Philadelphia region, an active community stakeholder in West Philadelphia and our immediate neighborhoods, and a responsible steward of our natural campus and resources.

• Making its facilities available as a public service to other non-profit organizations.

THE MANN @ 50: HISTORIC LEGACY, BOLD VISION

Our 50th Anniversary Campaign will reimagine our beloved campus, enhancing the guest experience with a dramatically expanded entry plaza, new bar and lounge, and additional amenities like more restrooms and points of sales for concessions, cutting-edge technology including immersive projection mapping, the Mann Music Hall of Fame, and worldclass artistic programming for the 2026 season, featuring The Philadelphia Orchestra, the Crossing, BalletX, Mural Arts Philadelphia, and more. Most importantly, these improvements will strengthen our role as a valued cultural resource for our city, allow us to be an even better neighbor to our community here in West Parkside, and be a beacon for arts education across the nation. For more information and to support this next exciting chapter, please visit MannCenter.org/50

PROGRAMMING

As one of the foremost outdoor music centers in the country, the Mann, a leading non-profit organization, has a historic legacy of artistic excellence as a world-class entertainment destination presenting premier artists. Each summer season, renowned symphony orchestras, iconic rock stars, and the latest touring artists in indie rock, hip hop, R&B, and pop take the stage here. The Mann is the summer home of The Philadelphia Orchestra and has presented critically acclaimed performers in every decade since the 1930s. Located in the heart of Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park, the Mann hosts up to 400,000 visitors annually. Signature concert experiences are surrounded by Philadelphia’s stunning skyline and include seats beneath the Mann’s acoustically acclaimed TD Pavilion at the Mann; picnics, blankets, and music under the stars on its great lawn; and dining in Crescendo, the campus’s spectacular tented restaurant.

In 2020, the Mann Center and Live Nation Entertainment, the world’s leading live entertainment company, entered into an exclusive, multi-year booking partnership. Through this partnership, Live Nation Entertainment delivers dynamic leading touring artists, joining the Mann in investing capital resources to enhance the Mann’s patron experience through VIP opportunities, new concession options, expanded production of large experiential musical festivals, and more.

LIVING CLASSROOM

The Mann created a Living Classroom, a hybrid in-person/digital space based in its Field Education Center at its West Philadelphia campus with the support of the McLean Contributionship. The heart of the Living Classroom is an investment in a programmable, interactive video wall. The Mann has designed this video wall in partnership with Crafted Action, a national leader in digital experiential master planning. The video wall will consist of three individual screens that join together to create one seamless display that covers one entire wall of the Mann’s Field Education Center. These screens are covered by a plexiglass touch screen with smartboard-like touch interface technology – meaning that using a stylus and even one’s fingers, a student can write or engage with content in real-time. The screens can also capture images via integrated webcam (video and sound), meaning that those who are on the other side of the digital divide can also experience activities happening live in the classroom.

The

functionality of this new technology at the Mann is threefold:

• Enhance Interactive Learning Experiences: From composition classes with live music writing to editing music and scores live, the possibilities of how this touch technology will enhance existing programs are endless. Many schools have switched from physical tools such as whiteboards to digital hybrid smartboards for similar reasons— interactive screens are the new standard best practice tool for 21st-century classrooms.

• Increase Capacity: Through the integrated webcam, the Mann can welcome students into programs who may not be able to physically attend classes – whether students are participating from outside of West Philadelphia, or even those who may be sick that day. The Living Classroom further breaks down barriers that prevent students from accessing world-class programming at the Mann. The Mann will also work alongside the School District of Philadelphia to integrate its Living Classroom into more ongoing summer learning and School District activities.

• Bring Remote Learning Opportunities: Remote learning and distance learning have been proven to be asswets to education, allowing students to benefit from master teachers and world-class experiences in a global context. The Mann has strong existing partnerships with sister summer programs across the United States – including Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, Wolf Trap, the Smithsonian, the Kennedy Center, and Lincoln Center. The Living Classroom will allow the Mann to connect West Philadelphia students to these world-class institutions, including new peer-to-peer and peer-to-mentor connections, that will further open doors for students to succeed in their music education and, potentially, music industry careers.

AGE RANGES

MANN CENTER INSTITUTE FOR CREATIVE ARTS AND COMMUNITY IMPACT

Our vision is for the Mann Center to serve as a creative catalyst for civically engaged youth and economic development that enriches the quality of life for Parkside and Greater Philadelphia. The Mann’s education and community engagement programs are designed and guided by three core initiatives:

1. Out-of-School Time (OST) 2. Workforce Development (WFD) 3. Creative Placemaking (CPM)

Out-of-School Time (OST)

Out-of-School Time initiatives offer students increased opportunities to explore and develop skills that are otherwise more difficult to access. These programs are shown to improve a student’s inschool engagement and retention of materials, proving the value of a program extends well beyond the time limitations of a specific project. The following programs comprise the OST initiative:

MOTION & MUSIC ACADEMY (MMA)

A year-round after-school learning program providing high-quality choir, drumming, and dance classes for the students of the Parkside neighborhood. (Presented by Highmark)

THE ALBERT M. GREENFIELD ALL CITY ORCHESTRA SUMMER ACADEMY AT THE MANN (ACOSA)

Workforce Development: (WFD)

The Mann’s Workforce Development programs seek to provide valuable learning environments and opportunities to students and young adults ages 10–25 with the goal of each participant gaining skills and tools needed for success. Through innovative partnerships, the Mann offers a variety of WFD programs targeted to address three main pillars: Awareness, Exposure, and Experience.

Creative Placemaking: (CPM)

Creative Placemaking initiatives help promote growth and enhancements to quality of life within our community through arts and culture programming. The following programs comprise the CPM initiative:

“The Mann is a Philadelphia treasure. It’s one of the best outdoor venues I’ve been to. Also, the staff is generally more friendly and approachable than the staff at other venues.”

“The Mann is my favorite venue in Philly and maybe the world. Keep up the great work!”

“Love The Mann. Been going here for 30+ years, and it always delivers a great experience.”

“We took our 7 and 9-year-olds to the Mann for their first concert and it was truly such a sweet experience. So memorable, the staff was so friendly with them. The Mann is such a special place!”

“As a long-time Philadelphian, this was (sadly) my first time at the Mann. I cannot believe I’ve never been to this incredible little gem of a venue until now. I loved how you could freely walk around and enjoy the campus. Decorated with lights, plenty of places to get food and drinks... It was lovely and I can’t wait to come back. Thank you for making my first time at the Mann something to remember, always.”

“The Mann is my favorite musical venue! Views are great from almost all seats. Sounds are always super. And nothing beats a summer concert at the Mann!”

“I have been to The Mann more times than I can remember, and the entire staff is friendly. The bathroom attendant plays the greatest music in there, and she keeps the facilities very clean which is not an easy job. Thank you for being one of the best venues.”

Impressionism was a force for about three decades, and other -isms like neoclassicism and serialism seem like blips on the screen compared to the genre that came out of New York City in the 1970s and grew up in Philadelphia.
