“Good evening everybody. Why is everybody speak the English”, started Robo Shankar in his own indomitable style. The guests had just slowly percolated into their seats after wading through the thick and strong traffic around T Nagar. “Metro construction le?” echoed one of the family friends. Dhivya had to hold on to the start of the show, just to make sure most of the invitees were in. This was one special Wednesday evening for Dhivya and Preshant. As the crowd waited, a tatoo artist seated at the corner near the entry drew a lot of attention from curious kids, egging their parents for permission to be painted upon. As Shankar continued, with a few takes on life in the city, and a few more on English, he quickly switched to his maxim forte- mimicry. With just enough poise, intonation and a carefully sprinkled humor he kept most of his audience enthralled as he slipped through the skins of matinee idols and politicians with sublime ease. Robo Shankar had just started another day at work. Finding Nakshatra through the evening was no big task. She was always in her father’s arms or with family friends under the watchful eyes of her father, Preshant. “He never lets us near her, what do you expect me to say”? retorted one friend. “Preshant was a total party guy before. Past Tense. Now he just stays home taking very good care of Nakshatra.” “The Vazhakappu happened here, in this very hall” Added Dhivya’s Father. We were all delighted; she is the first grandchild in the entire family he added exuberantly. “But little did we know that Nakshatra wanted to be out in no less than a month! She was born exactly one month before my due date. We were all a little worried. The operation went through successfully under the able guidance of Preshant’s mother at their own hospital in the city.” As Robo Shankar left his first venue for the evening, the stage and its décor was thrown open to full view, as the DJ continued with his assorted collection of time fillers. An archway of balloons spaced the center of the

stage as little stars flew across the fabric drapes. White was the anointed dress code for the evening, which reflected the coloured light that shone at the kids picking at balloons afloat on stage. Within almost no time, the guests were alerted by a decisive shift in music. It was the instrumental of “Bantu Reethi” mostly known for being played in marriage’s and religious ceremonies. Preshant and Nakshatra adorned by a Chatri walked down the aisle in grace, as the guests watched them climb onto the stage, towards the birthday cake at the center of the ballooned archway. Cake had Nakshatra in Eight characters. First Nakshatra smiles; second Nakshatra explores a lot, reaches for stars; third Nakshatra lies around; fourth Nakshatra reads her book; fifth Nakshatra eats her biscuit; sixth Nakshatra simply crawls around; seventh Nakshatra takes rest; last but never the least, loves her dog so much.
