MHA President’s Report - Steven Manns

Happy New Years Everyone,

As we wrapped up 2025, it is important to take this opportunity to reflect on the past year and to have optimism moving into 2026. Looking back to this past sale season, there was a strong demand for the Hereford females and Hereford genetics. At the end of October, Ag Ex was well attended with 95 head on display. It was nice to see lots of people in the stands watching and supporting the show. Seeing a strong group of juniors participating in the junior show was inspiring to see. Moving onto the Good as Gold sale in December, a very strong group of Hereford genetics sold. We had a nice assortment of future donor cows, multiple show prospects, to bulls with herd bull potential.

Hopefully the weather cooperates for the 2026 calving season. Looking forward to summer, we have our AGM and Field Day. There have been discussions about the AGM, please watch for final details regarding the meeting in your email, details will also be posted on social media. The field day will be held at AM Ranching, near the end of August, final details to come.

In closing remarks, I would like to wish everyone good luck with calving and upcoming bull sales. It’s nice to see a strong trend occurring where hereford bulls are in demand for the cross-bred baldies and brockle face calves. The hereford bulls really help give hybrid vigor when breeding solid coloured cows.

Till next time, Steven

MJHA Report - Kennedy Manns

Greetings from Manitoba! At the beginning of January, one of our Manitoba delegates, Kennedy Manns, attended the CJHA meetings held in Calgary! While there she had the opportunity to tour Telus Ag and Rimrock Feeders! Just a reminder to all juniors that the Brandon Winter Fair is coming up and to get their entries and we can’t wait to see everyone there! I’m wishing everyone good luck with their spring calving and upcoming bull sales!!

CHA Report - Janelle Gulka

The Canadian Hereford Association Board met in Calgary in December to focus on priorities for 2026. A major topic was the new registry system, aimed at giving members a smoother, more reliable way to manage registrations and herd records. Genomic services and parentage testing were also discussed, along with making newer sampling methods like TSUs easier to use. As a reminder, Neogen is still occasionally experiencing border delays, so please allow 6–8 weeks for results.

The Board continues to keep Hereford genetics practical and useful for everyday operations. Work is ongoing around performance tools such as fertility and feedlot indexes, along with additional traits like RFI. The Digest will also continue sharing farm-level stories showing how breeders and commercial customers are using EPDs and indexes to make better bull and replacement decisions. Promotion of the breed remains a top priority, with continued collaboration with provincial associations on marketing, merchandise, and show resources. Updates to the MOE show program were approved to modernize the rules while maintaining a strong focus on ethical practices and good sportsmanship.

A new opportunity is also now available through the Hereford Inventory Genotyping Project for members participating in the THE program. For a limited time, breeders can genomically test their complete female inventory at a reduced rate of $40 per animal. This includes the regular CHA Standard Test, with add-ons such as parentage, genetic conditions (except MD), horned/polled status, and genomically enhanced EPDs. Completing inventory testing helps improve pedigree accuracy, reduce future parentage issues, and adds value when marketing cattle. Members not currently in the THE program can contact Val Wells (val@hereford.ca) for details.

The Heifer Select project also continues to grow, now including over 17,000 head. This initiative supports commercial producers in making stronger heifer selection decisions using on-farm data, management software, and genomic

testing, helping position Hereford genetics as a practical, data-backed choice for improving herd performance.

The Canadian Hereford Foundation saw great momentum through the National Select Sale, with funds going back into youth programs and long-term breed initiatives. Thank you to everyone who supported the sale through donations and bidding.

Planning is already underway for Bonanza 2026 in Quebec, with the CHA AGM scheduled for July 24. Several Manitoba juniors are planning their trip to Richmond, QC, and we look forward to seeing them represent our breed with the energy and dedication that continues to make us proud. All the best as you continue calving—may your nights be short, your calves be healthy, and your heifers behave themselves—and I look forward to seeing many of you at bull sales this spring!

Junior SpotlightLucas &

1) Introduce yourself! How old are you? Where do you live and go to school? What grade are you in?

Hi, my name is Lucas Bieganski. I live outside of Carberry and am in grade 10 at Carberry Collegiate High School.

2) Tell us about your family farm and your role on the farm? When did you get started into Herefords?

My family runs a commercial cattle operation. My sister and myself also have our own herds of purebred Hereford and Black Angus cows. My role on the farm in the summer is to check pastures and pump water for our cows. This is very convenient because I am always looking for a way to go for a quad ride on a nice day and I can also go see my cows and calves out in the pasture. They are all pretty quiet and I like giving them scratches at the water tank. In the winter I have lots of jobs from shredding straw out for the cows and feeding them silage and grain. I also help at the shute when we process them for vaccinations. I first got started into Herefords in 2020 when I bought a heifer calf from Andrew Kopeechuk. After I got her, I bought another heifer calf from Kirk Stierwalt and showed both of them at the Winter and Fall Fair in Brandon Manitoba.

3) How many years have you been a MJHA member? What are your favourite MJHA/ CJHA events to attend?

I have been a Manitoba Jr. Hereford member for 6 years. My favourite CJHA event so far has been Bonanza. I met so many new friends! I was even lucky enough to win one of the Heifer Lottery draws that I put towards purchasing a bred Heifer from Kenny and Janelle at Twin View Herefords. She had a nice heifer calf that I plan to breed this spring. I would like to Thank the CJHA for organizing Bonanza and making it such a great event!

4) Are you in 4-H? What Club are you in and what projects do you have for 2026? This year I am in the Sidney 4-H Beef Club and I have a steer and heifer project.

5) Who is your favourite heifer and why?

My favorite Hereford heifer is SC KC JESSICA 302L. She is sired by ECR 628 IVYS Advance 8923 ET (AKA) Sancho. I bought her from Kirk Stierwalt. She is my favorite because she is super quiet. She had a very nice bull calf that I plan to use this breeding season on some commercial angus cows to make baldies since they sell really well at market.

6) Do you have any other hobbies that you enjoy outside of the farm? Some of my other hobbies include quading, hunting, trapping, snowmobiling, curling and biking.

7) What shows do you plan on attending in 2026?

I plan to attend the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair, my 4-H Achievement, the Carberry Open show, Hereford Field Day, and Manitoba Ag Ex this year.

Alayna Bieganski

1) Introduce yourself! How old are you? Where do you live and go to school? What grade are you in?

Hi there, my name is Alayna Bieganski. My family lives outside of Carberry. I am 9 years old and I attend Grade 4 at R.J Waugh School.

2) Tell us about your family farm and your role on the farm? When did you get started into Herefords?

My family runs a commercial cow/calf operation. My brother Lucas and I have our own small herds of Hereford and Black Angus cattle. My role on the farm is to help out wherever I can. I like to get the salt and mineral ready in pails when we fill the mineral feeders. I like to help when we are halter breaking our calves by scratching them and just spending time with them so that they get really quiet and easy to handle. I like to keep my own record book of my cows and calves during calving season. I even have my own tattoos for my Hereford and Angus cattle.

3) How many years have you been a MJHA member? What are your favourite MJHA/CJHA events to attend?

My favorite CJHA event was definitely Bonanza! I had so much fun meeting new friends and spending time getting Franny ready to show.

4) Are you in 4-H? What Club are you in and what projects do you have for 2026?

I am in the Carberry 4-H Beef Club and this year I have a heifer and a steer project. This is my 4th year in 4-H and I really like getting my animals ready for Achievement days. I am also doing a Sewing project this year and I am having fun learning how to sew. Something I plan to try sewing is some Moo-muffs in case we need some extras during cold calving days.

5) Who is your favourite heifer and why?

My favorite heifer is Franny. I bought her from the Rimke’s with my own calf money. I call her my friend Fran. She is so quiet. I can walk into the pen anytime and go and scratch her. She had a Final Print bull calf last year and I can’t wait for her to have her calf this year. I hope it’s a heifer calf so that I can keep her!

6) Do you have any other hobbies that you enjoy outside of the farm? Some other things that I like to do are Gymnastics, Baseball, Gardening, riding my bike, and riding the quad to check the cows in the pasture.

7) What shows do you plan on attending in 2026?

This year we plan to attend the Royal Manitoba Winter fair, my 4-H Achievement days, the Carberry Open show, Hereford Field Day and Manitoba Ag-Ex.

At the 2025 MHA Good as Gold Sale, the MJHA presented Albert and Michelle Rimke with jackets to thank them for all their dedication and commitment to the Manitoba Juniors over the years!

1. Cook linguine according to package instructions. Drain and set it aside.

2. In a large skillet brown the ground beef. Drain excess fat as needed.

4. In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with cold water until smooth. Stir this mixture into the skillet with the beef and sauce. Allow it to simmer until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.

• 1 tablespoon onion powder

Directions:
