LOD DGE 5 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE John McNesby, President
A couple of weeks back the neutral arbitrator issued our contract award. After all the media driven hype about transparency and community input (not a single person even attempted to show up) it was a pretty decent award. We did better then all the other city unions as well as the teachers. And rightfully so. In today’s climate no other job is more difficult then that of a police officer. We deserve more, we want more, but the award was fair. We put a lot of time, effort, and money into putting a well prepared, on point presentation. We have done this in all contracts since my Team has been in place (six contracts, with over 50% in pay increases). We are proud to represent you, and will continue to do so. I have to give a shout out to Jack Gaittens and Ray Convery over at LEHB, as well as our labor attorneys, experts, actuaries, and all the witnesses. We appreciate all the work put in. Now we need to work on manpower, working on getting council to make changes to hiring, as well as a number of other issues in Harrisburg. Keep your heads up… its bound to get better. Sincerely, April Thomas-Jones Executive Director ~~~ 8/16/21 Mr. John J McNesby, Today my family and I went to the Longhorn Steakhouse on Easton Road in Warrington Pa. We were enjoying our delicious steak dinners when a small piece of steak got Lodged in my throat. I drank some soda, but the piece of steak did not budge. My Life flashed before my eyes, and I was certain that I would choke to death. Fortunately, police officer Thomas Morrow of Philadelphia Lodge 5 happened to have been in the restaurant. Officer Morrow relieved my daughter of her efforts to perform the Heimlich Maneuver. He persisted in his attempts to dislodge the meat until he was successful. The piece of meat dislodged, and I was no Longer choking. Officer Thomas Morrow saved my Life today and I am so thankful that the evening didn't end up at the morgue. Officer Morrow is a hero. He helped someone he didn't know who was in a perilous situation. There were many witnesses to this event in the restaurant. I thanked him and my daughter thanked him, but I think you should know about his heroic behavior. I am still very embarrassed about the incident and would like to remain anonymous. Very Grateful ~~~ OFFICER DANIEL BOYLE SCHOLARSHIP FUND Dear John, I wish to extend my sincere thanks for your contribution to the Officer Daniel Boyle Scholarship Fund. We are now beginning our 31th year, giving students· from disadvantaged familres the education they deserve and need for their futures. Because of the Covid epidemic this past year, we had to cancel the Annual Officer Daniel Boyle Scholarship Golf Outing scheduled in May of 2020. So many of you who own taverns and restaurants suffered a devastating year because of all the lock 9
downs and severe restrictions. With that in mind, I chose not to ask for any contributions or gift certificates from any of those establishments. Your generosity these past many years is a tribute to all of you. We were able to host the tournament in May 2021 and it was a success. Looking forward to a brighter 2022 for all ofus. Even with all the Covid restrictions we were able to donate close to $60,000.00 in tuition assistance to those less fortunate. The total number of students helped since we began in 1991 is over 1100. I am pleased to report to you that all of these students have exceeded expectations. Vice President Message, by Steve Weiler, National Vice President
It gives me great pleasure to take this opportunity to Thank all of you for your support recently at the FOP National Conference in Indianapolis. I promise to continue to serve the members of Lodge 5 while I serve all of our brother and sister members across the country. On Wednesday, September 8th I was fortunate to be in attendance in the Newark area where I attended a rally in support of the Newark FOP and the IAFF Union. This rally was opposing the proposal of mandatory COVID-19 vaccination or be fired. I was able to speak at this rally, demanding a seat at the table to negotiate the demand for vaccination rather than the arbitrary demand that they take the shot or be fired. As to upcoming events, I will be in attendance at the “Big 50 Conference” in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This event will be a gathering of the largest 50 cities in the United States and discussions will be held regarding the multiple problems facing law enforcement across the country and the issues that various unions face in these dealings, including the Fraternal Order of Police.
completed the Survivors benefit where we raised funds for our Survivors. As you know this helps us to fund events and issues that the Survivors of our Fallen face on a daily basis. We had gorgeous weather for an outdoor BBQ and as usual it was well attended. We will Never Forget! We are currently accepting applications for foursomes for a golf tournament to be held on October 11th which will support our Local Lodge Scholarship program for kids and grandchildren of our members. We also have another golf out scheduled for November 8th that supports our PAC fund that we use to garner support from local and state politicians in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania. As you can see, it’s a busy time but I am never too busy to help a member, whether its at my local level or on a national level. VICE PRESIDENT/CHIEF OF STAFF’S MESSAGE BY ROOSEVELT POPLAR
I would like to personally thank each and every one of you that took the time to mail your ballot back in for the Board of Pension Representative position I was running for. I was successful in my election, and I will do my very best for all of you who have dedicated your time to this city and earned your pension. Our long time representative Ron Stagliano will be stepping down, and I was chosen by President John McNesby to fill his spot. Ron did an awesome job for our members, and I plan to follow in his foot steps to protect one of our most precious benefits we have. I’m very humbled to be chosen by President John McNesby, with the support of the Executive Board of the FOP, and the Leadership at LEHB (Jack Gaitens and Ray Convery). I will give my all to the men and women of this city that deserves nothing short of their accomplishments. I would like to give thanks to the hard work of President John McNesby and the entire FOP Board and Staff for all the hard work and efforts they put in to secure the ACT 111. Contract between the FOP and city of Philadelphia. I know 99% of the department is happy or at least satisfied with the outcome of the contract, giving the climate we are in at the current moment. Nothing was given back to the city, and we lived to fight another day. So for all of the people that showed their appreciations for what we got, I thank you. For the ones who thought we could have done more, our doors are always open for you to get involved and help us help you. What a year in review for the Law Enforcement World. That’s a statement that can mean a whole lot of different things to so many people. As I write this article, I sit back and think of the many changes that took place in and around the world. The Law Enforcement community went 16
from HEROES to Zeroes in a matter of a day. The media fed the propaganda to the weak minded politicians, that then jumped on the bandwagon of society, and completely turned their backs on us. They have introduced hundreds of thousands of bills around the country for their own personal gains. When asked why are they doing this, they all have the same common answer, the people wants it. So, once again, they listen to a hand full of people and let them dictate and speak for everyone else. The word of a few has a life time effect for the many. This is the world we have to live with now. The democratic way of doing things is in the past and long gone. You are basically told that you do not have a choice in the matter, you either accept it or move on. There is no room for negotiations. We have come too far as working class people to not have a seat at the table to discuss the very important matters that will have a life time affect on the rest of our lives as a whole. The same people that’s standing out there with the few, forgot that the many are the ones that put them in their positions. I have always took the attitude when things were not good that we are strong people, and we can get through this. This too shall pass. We all have to take that approach now, seeing that we are always the focus of attention of negativity. If the political world wants you to stand down during theses horrible times, then maybe you just have to stand down and give them what they want. When they or a loved one becomes a victim to their own ideology, that’s when reality steps in, and the game plan changes. The city is completely turned upside down, because the lack of support and leadership from the lawmakers that sit in City Hall collecting their paychecks, proposing to keep the city safe at all costs. But, yet and still we are over 400 murders in the city at this point, and the
only answer they have is to blame it on the Police first, racial bias, mental health, and poverty. They don’t mention the fact that the Police are not the ones going around doing the drive-by shootings, selling drugs, and terrorizing the neighborhoods. Nor do they mention the fact that most of the crime is not racially motivated. People are killing people, because this city has given up on the many good people to let the few run amuck, with the protection of a flawed criminal justice system that was put in place by a person who could care less about the future of this city and the citizens that have to live here in fear of walking down the street, sitting on their steps, and sending their children to the playground to play. The more crime you commit the more programs you are offered to rehabilitate with no direction to a better future. But they do let you come back to your neighborhood and finish what you started if you did not have the opportunity to complete your mission of destroying your hood, and neighbors. The politicians would like to see more advocate groups on the streets doing the work of law enforcement. By all means, go for it, and see how that works out for you. All that does for them is generate more wasted city funds to hire and pay their political debts to friends and colleagues. I think we have been down those roads before with very little success. Neighborhoods can not police their own neighborhoods, studies have shown it across the world. That do not snitch mentality is stronger than ever in every major city due to the fact of fear of the thugs that terrorizes the people that have to live there. It should be obvious to the people that wants to put others in harms way without any solution for protection. Prime example, 6 people shot in broad daylight, and not one eye witness or volunteers handing in their video footage of the shooting. They know if they do, the people responsible for the 6 victims will be targeting them soon after they are released from jail, after not having to post bail, thanks to our new crime reform statutes that’s in place by the number one person in charge of keeping violent offenders off the streets. And you best believe no

one from city council is going to provide any type of protection for their constituents. So once again, who gets the blame for it, you guessed, the men and women in uniform that took the oath to protect life, even if it means putting themselves in harms way. That being said, the department need to start showing how much you are appreciated in these times, when the outside world is looking at everything you do to find fault. We can’t expect the public to respect us, when the people you work for don’t respect and appreciate what you do on a daily basis. It’s hard to try and understand some of the things going on in this department with some of the so called leaders, knowing the situation you’re faced with and they still have the mentality to destroy what you have worked so hard for. If you are giving your all, and that’s not good enough, I don’t know what more you can give at this point.

VICE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE BY JOHN MCGRODY We have a lot of responsibilities here at the FOP. Much of what we do is mandated by the FOP Bylaws; work on behalf of the members, provide life insurance coverage, represent members at IAD and district level interviews and the fraternal aspect of the FOP that is the brotherhood and sisterhood of police officers and our common needs. However, NOTHING that YOUR FOP does is more important than to obtain a good contract that maintains your health benefits, working conditions, pensions and get raises. We all fully realize that there is not enough money to properly compensate you for doing the job of a Philadelphia Police Officer. And there is surely no way to compensate your families nor make them whole for all the sacrifices that are made by virtue of them being part of a police family. The contract was issued by the Arbitration Panel several weeks prior to this writing. The rumors are over and once again the rumors proved mainly untrue. After years of hard work and dedication, under the leadership of John McNesby, Your FOP has delivered a contract that many thought and predicted was unattainable. We got raises, we got a bonus, we maintained our superior health coverage, our pensions are intact, we maintained residency and the right for you and your family to decide where you live. I don’t have to reiterate the contract numbers, you all know what they are by now. I can tell you that this was the most hardly fought contract cycle in a generation, perhaps in the history of Lodge 5. Going into this process there was a prediction of doom and gloom by those in the department, elected officials and anti-police special interests throughout the world. Our team here at the FOP did not let that racket impact them. The team continued on with the steady resolve that the only thing that mat-

tered was the well being of our members and their families. I’ve learned through my police career that when there is a lot of racket and noise, look to the quiet ones for the path forward. That is what happened with our contract fight. We proceeded quietly and with a determined resolve. Going into the contract fight, we tried to change the narrative of what a Philadelphia Police Officer is and what a Philly cop does day to day. While the news media in this town and the newspaper of record in Philly bashed our people on a daily basis, we put a presentation together that turned the negative narrative on its head. We proved our members serve the city with honor, integrity and sacrifice on a daily basis. We proved that our members are out there helping people on a daily basis, we proved that our members are our there saving lives, we proved that our members enforce the law evenly and we proved that without our members total anarchy and chaos would rule the day in Philly. YOU make a difference and we proved that. The term FOP lawyer is part of the vernacular of Philly cops. The term is widely utilized in the department and in the media. To our members, their work is largely anonymous. The labor law firm that represents the FOP is Willig-Williams. During this contract cycle, the FOP and the firm were joined at the hip most days. The contract legal team was directed by Rick Poulson and Ralph Teti who along with Tom Gribbin and Jim Glowacki were very instrumental in putting forth a great presentation and the ultimate success of this contract. On behalf of our membership, John McNesby and myself have thanked them personally. However, I feel a mention in these pages is warranted. Our police officers do heroic, brave and remarkable things on the city streets on a daily basis. We don’t hear that from the
news media, the community and our elected officials. Unfortunately, we don’t hear it often enough from the Departmental Leadership. I wish the command staff was more vocal in displaying to the public the great things and hard work that our people do on a daily basis. A note on Body Worn Cameras. The Directive on Body Worn Cameras assures our officers that BWC footage will not be utilized to uncover minor disciplinary infractions. In practice, that is not the case. In fact, Internal Affairs has a unit that does nothing but view BWC footage and look for infractions. At the contract talks, a Chief Inspector who oversees the Department BWC program testified that the Department is not looking for wrong-doing by our officers via the Body Worn Cameras. (The Chief is a gentleman and a stand-up guy.) The following day, over 60 reprimands showed up in the mail at the FOP for BWC infractions. The Department’s disciplinary apparatus had other plans. The FOP grieved all of these reprimands. There should be no BWC discipline until each and every member of the department is issued and wears a BWC on a daily basis, including the 3rd floor (can we still use the term 3rd floor?) Once again, the department leaves the hard-working district cops with the short end of the stick. The department is now heavily scrutinizing car stops and ped stops and reviewing the “probable cause” to determine if it existed. There is a unit that reviews these and looks for “infractions”. Like the BWC unit, they are reviewing the actions of street cops from the confines of an office. Department leaders are very frustrated with the level of crime in Philly. Some politicians, many whom advocated for defunding the police, are now calling for the police to do more and be more proactive. We have seen this trend before. Be very cognizant of this fact and be very wary of bosses asking for increased activity, increased ped stops and increased car stops. Do your job wisely, but be very cognizant of the fact that those who “asked for more activity” will be nowhere to be found

when the stuff hits the fan. Once again, the department leaves the hard-working district cops with the short end of the stick. The district cops are the backbone of the department. The district cops are the workhorses of the department. We need more respect for those who are in the districts doing the job day to day. We have too many people second-guessing the few street cops who are out there. I was honored to go to the 14th & 35th Districts on the day the contract award was issued by the Panel. The members I spoke to that day were pleased with the contract and it was nice to hear folks thanking the FOP for the efforts that were put forth for themselves and their families. In some special units in the department, the response to the contract was not as enthusiastic and even negative. That is proof to me that some have lost the perspective of the street cop (or never had that perspective to begin with). This FOP will never waver in our support of the frontline district cops. Administratively, please remember to keep us up to date here at the FOP on any changes to your personal information such as address, phone number. Even though you may have reported these changes to the Department, the information does not always make its way here. It is also a good time to check on and update your beneficiary. And lastly, no matter your age or life circumstances, it is prudent to have a valid will. We can handle that for you and we have a Wills for Heroes event scheduled at the FOP the first Saturday in March. It has never been harder to be a Philadelphia Police Officer and we realize the sacrifices that you make on a daily basis. We appreciate that and work every day to make sure that you and your families get the benefits, pay and protections you so richly deserve. When we speak as the FOP, we are simply speaking on behalf of you and your families. Please stay safe and watch your back as we are seeing a department with the lowest levels of manpower in generations.

Citizens are very unhappy seeing the constant failure to deliver required city services from several of these departments. Treasurer’s Report DEFUND the Police were chants often wailed at Police by protesters, rioters, and politicians for the past year and half. Police reform was the other. While multiple cities, including Philadelphia were trying their best, with the media’s help, to handcuff police and strip law enforcement agencies around the country of their rights to fair wages and health benefits, an arbitrator in Philadelphia has spoken. The arbitrator’s new award demonstrates his understanding and appreciation for Philadelphia Police Officers. Over the next three years, you will see an increase of about 9.75% in your salary and no changes in our health benefits, pension, & residency. It’s a huge win for Lodge 5 and our members. Now that we are coming upon the fall season and the expectation of holiday parties, I like to address a question regarding “Tax Exemption” when a Non-Profit Organization hosts an event at the FOP or any other venue for that matter. Non-profit organizations are exempt from Federal Income Taxes of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax code subsection 501(c). Of the many types of non-profits with the IRS, most folks are familiar with the 501(c) 3 type. Most of our sister organizations, such as the Spanish American Law Enforcement Association (SALEA), Emerald Society, Guardian Civic League (GCL), Custodes Pacis, you get the drift, most likely fall within that category. A 501(c) 3 characterization simply means you’re either an organization, a corporation, a trust, an unincorporated association, or any other type of organization exempt from paying Federal Income Taxes under Title 26 of the United States Code. “A non-profit organization is an organization that engages in activities for both public and private interest, such as fundraising without pursuing the goal of commercial or monetary profit.” A social gathering is NOT tax exempt. The Employer Identification Number (EIN) provided to your organization by the IRS only exempts you from paying Federal Taxes. 28

In order to be exempt from paying State and / or Local taxes, your organization needs to obtain and provide a Pennsylvania Exemption Certificate, which would have a different tax exemption number from the Federal EIN number. The responsibility of proving your tax exemption status solely lies on the organization requesting the tax exemption, it is not the responsibility of the Fraternal Order of Police – Lodge 5 or any other venue to determine. A discussion with your organization’s tax accountants may better assist you in order to obtain, secure, and be able provide the proper paperwork in the future when tax exemption applies. On another note, the City of Philadelphia has reengaged the FOP with the settlement conferences regarding OnePhilly. The city continues to push for an arbitration process similar to Heart & Lung, which I have written about in a previous article. OnePhilly recently experienced another embarrassment moment. The entire recruit class of 395, except for two, were not paid on time. Since the preferred method is “Direct Deposit,” paper checks are becoming extinct. The city issued recruits ATM cards with no money on them or no ATM card at all. Further proving with or without a settlement, OnePhilly is a diabolical nightmare. We will continue to keep you posted. Remember to provide Lodge 5 with your new addresses, emails, and cell / home telephone numbers. The department does not forward this information when you update your 75-350. Recording Secretary’s Message by John Hoyt
As I sit here and type this article the city of Philadelphia just past 400 homicides for the year and its not even October. A grim indicator of just what is going on in the streets of Philadelphia. While grim, it is not at all surprising. Anyone who has been paying even a little bit of attention knew that the rise in violent crime was going to continue; and it has. Unfortunately, with it appearing that our District Attorney will be re-elected I don’t see things changing any time soon. But let’s focus on the good. This past summer the FOP and the City of Philadelphia entered arbitration hearings. The result was a fair and just contract for our members. In an era where even our local politicians have uttered the words, “Defund the Police!” we were still able to get a contract ensuring our Officers get a raise every year for the next three years. Additionally, our medical was not touched and we now have four weeks paternity leave. Our department is young, and those four weeks will have a major and beneficial impact on their lives as they welcome children into the world. Over the next three years every active member of the Police Department will receive a raise of almost 10%. While it is tempting to spend that extra money on something fun like a vacation or new car might I suggest a better alternative? When I was in Highway Patrol my Lieutenant would address roll call every time we
would get a raise. However, those roll calls were a little different. Instead of addressing areas of the city that were spiking in crime he would address our retirement and how to ensure we would be comfortable in retirement. He advised us to enroll in the city’s deferred compensation plan. He would also advise us to increase our deferred comp contribution every time we would get a raise and if possible, increase the same percentage as our raise. I don’t think everyone at our roll calls knew just how important that advice was to their future. A few years later when I became a Sergeant one of the first things I did was make sure my cops were in the deferred comp program and increasing their contributions every year. I continued to do that at all my future assignments and ranks. As a supervisor it is your duty to look out for your cops; and that doesn’t just mean on the street. So in closing be careful out there, take care of yourselves, take care of your family and be smart about your future. Deferred contribution money is money you won’t miss now but it will be waiting for you with significant interest when you retire.

In the disability area Heart and Lung procedures will only apply to officers who are injured while engaged in any activity, assignment, duty, or function involving the protection of life and property, the enforcement of laws and or the investigation of crimes. The contract does not include administrative assignments as in the performance of duties any longer. The kids can put on certain pieces of equipment to pretend they are an actual Police Officer of Fire Fighter and of course there are the shows put on by the Highway Patrol Drill Team and K-9 unit. It’s a total family affair with all proceeds going to educate the children of fallen Police and Firemen. It’s an awesome event it goes off every year without a hitch.

Conductors’ Message by Sharon Jonas
All at once, Summer collapsed into Fall. Now, along with all of you, our pace picks up as we strive to ensure that every one of your special occasions, events or functions are beyond memorable, just as you deserve at your FOP. The McNesby Team began working on the contract for the 2020 contract term years ago. Last year, the pandemic hit and our team had the foresight to step up to the plate and got our membership a one year contract extension. This year we went in for our contract negotiations against great odds. Your FOP was able to deliver on a contract that protects you and reflects that sacrifices that you AND YOUR FAMILY make on a daily basis. As your conductor, I have the honor of meeting our newest members first when I swear them in as they enter the Academy as recruits. At that time, we also strongly suggest that our new brothers and sisters enroll in the Deferred Compensation Program to supplement the pensions that your FOP protected in the contract that was just issued. In addition to pension and medical protections, your FOP was able to obtain pretty decent raises approaching 10% over three years. Now may be a good time to defer some of that raise money to your deferred comp before you begin to see it on your paystub. Among other Summertime reflections was the thrilling “34th Annual Ben to the Shore” which, unlike our neighborhood daytime local 2020 trek it was thankfully able to bring all who took part back over the bridge! We are all very grateful to those who were a part of this annual tradition and the funds that were raised, which will thankfully benefit our Survivor Families. All our volunteers and those who support in a variety of ways are the ones who make us all shine, invaluably, together. Also, finally, as Summer began to wind down we were excited to get things into high gear hosting a beautiful afternoon here at home base supporting our An44
nual FOP Survivor’s Benefit with some food/some brews while enjoying a Philadelphia Eagles (WIN!) Tailgate along with the rocking sounds of Jamison Celtic Rock Band . And, just a little note, as I write this, the final plans are in place to enjoy another afternoon of support with the annual Philadelphia DOO WOP Festival with the DJ sounds of Philly’s Best Oldies and the area’s top vocal groups. Both successes made possible by, too many to name, but who make it, behind the scenes, everything and more! We have several “can’t miss” events in the near future. CHAPLAINS CORNER by: Lou Campione The lesson of tribulation “Reframing” The Saga continues, we continue to witness dramatic increases in crime, homicides, suicides, overdoses and we continue to work harder to help deal with the crisis, we remain in the trenches. We as servant leaders, police officers and sheriff’s deputies each day continue to live our mission in service to others. We live the golden rule and save lives by scooping victims and getting them to the hospital for emergency care. We apply tourniquets to stop victims from bleeding out. We have gotten record numbers of illegal guns off the street desperately trying to reduce gun violence. We continue to assist all those who are going through “mental crisis”, which has been greatly increased by current events. We continue to respond to 2.5 million calls for help each year. The challenges we have seen as a result of the civil disorder, cancel culture, virus, and all of the demonic influence it has produced has presented many challenges. We have remained resilient and continue our mission as servant leaders. Our Judeo-Christian history gives us direction for the times we are in. The Book of Malachi written in 445 B.C. presents a description of what we must continue to endure and what has been endured throughout the 5082 year history of civilization. “Now I am sending my messenger he will prepare the way before me. And the lord whom you seek will come suddenly to his temple; the messenger of the covenant whom you desire-see, he is coming! Says the Lord of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand firm when he appears? For he will be like a refiner fire, like fullers lye. He will sit refining and purifying silver, and he will purify the Levites. Refining them like gold or silver, that they may bring offerings to the Lord in righteousness.” We must reframe the crisis that we are in, to view it as a way of being refined by God, refining us like gold or silver is refined. We must see this time of tribulation as being refined by God, it is not to focus on the crisis we are in, but rather to concentrate on using this crisis to bring us closer to God. God wants each of us to be in union with him. This tribulation
is the opportunity to be brought to that union. Ecclesiastes 12:13 written in 3rd century B.C... describes it this way “Here is my final conclusion fear God and obey his commandments for this is the entire duty of man. For God will judge us for everything we do, including everything hidden good or bad.” We continue living the mission of servant leadership. We must continue to see God’s roll call as the most important, since he determines where we spend eternity. We must see God’s comp stat as the most important, because he will determine where we will spend eternity. We must not be drawn into the negative demonic thinking which the cancel culture promotes, but rather we must stay focused on our mission of service. As Philadelphia Police Officers and Sheriff’s Deputies we have a strong foundation of service to our beloved city and we continue that rich history of service. We must continue to serve in the tradition that has been given to us. We must remember our history. We must remember our families (the domestic church) and the sacrifice’s they have made in support of our mission of service. We must remember all those who have gone before us and have made the sacrifices to uphold our mission. In the faith community it is said the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church. In our community the supreme sacrifice of our brothers and sisters is viewed by God as a form of martyrdom. No greater love has a man than to lay down his life for a friend. We are a part of a priceless vocation of service. We must always live our mission as servant leaders as a mission from God and reframe! We must use this time of crisis to focus on all that we do in service to our God and his people. We offer this prayer asking for the intercession to our patron: “Michael the Archangel defend us in our day of battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray: and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen” 48

Changes in the Police Department that never change anything, vaccine doubts and other matters that affect the morale of the men and women in the department By Al Kuchler – Legal Services
Did you ever notice that when some new progressive idea floats down the river, this city seems to jump right on board and try to apply it to every department? They come up with new programs and ideas, usually someone else’s at the federal level, and immediately set up a three-day training experience for the command staff, supervisors, and then it filters down to the men and women on the street. Just think about that for a minute without even considering anything about the training. I want you to think about the manpower hours lost at the lowest level when you remove every officer from street duty for three days. Let’s try to imagine that we are a city that’s not experiencing over 400 homicides at the time of this writing. Let’s also ignore the fact that there are over a hundred deaths that are given “S” numbers which means “suspicious” that are not factored into the homicide numbers and we know that many should be in there. Do you think that losing these officers to street duty could have a negative affect on crimes that are happening with frightening regularity? I’m just saying. Think about the officers that are working in a certain district in West Philadelphia, a place where a good number of these homicides are taking place. The only terror these officers face is a commander who is completely out of control. Someone who has no people skills and certainly no communications skills unless you count yelling and 52
berating and brow beating. Even the custodian is a target for using too many trash bags. Think again and feel for these people in that the entire Command Staff is aware of this problem and pretends that they’re hands are tied. How much work do you think those poor supervisors and officers are going to produce for someone whose attitude is that it’s never enough? Then we have the vaccine matters. Let me say first and foremost, I had Covid in November 2020, I am fully vaccinated, and I will also get the next booster when it’s available to me. I truly don’t understand the anti-vax logic, but I do believe that people have a right to say no to getting vaccinated. That being said, I also believe that the city has a right to regulate both those that are vaccinated and those that choose not to be vaccinated. They currently are requiring masks to be worn by all personnel when attending court, whether you are vaccinated or not. They have every right to do that, these are city facilities, and we are city employees. However, if they ever break it down to require people that are not vaccinated to wear double masking all the time and also be subject to random testing then I believe they have every right to do that also. As far as mandates for everyone to be vaccinated, I’m not sure how I feel about that but I’m leaning towards thinking the mandates are the right thing to do. I guess we’ll see how that plays out in the courts, but I can imagine a myriad of problems for
those that refuse to be vaccinated. One for sure could be a lack of recognition should there be a death of an unvaccinated person as a line of duty death. The city fights everything else so I can see it happening here too. Last but not least are the inequities that almost every commander allows to occur within their commands related to reimbursable overtime. Why is it that their staffs, the ones who don’t work any night work, have weekends and holidays off, cozy up inside with their sweaters and space heaters when it’s cold, consistently have a higher income level that the men and women who work all the shifts and slog thru the snow and ice. Why can’t we change that into an equal employment opportunity for all? The first reason is that most commanders don’t care about the rest of you,
only their staffs. The second is you don’t care enough because if you did you would ask questions about it in your assignments. You would gather up evidence that people are getting more, much more than the regular squads are getting. Then you would bring that evidence to my attention so we could document these things. I remember when a Sergeant in the 6th in 2 squad gathered up all the reimbursable hours paid, along with the code 64 hours and then prepared a three-page memo to the commander, alleging an Equal Employment Complaint regarding these matters and that commander buckled and fixed it. If you don’t make noise, things will stay the same. The ball is in your court, we can only help those that help themselves and then tell us about it.

PAST PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Richard Costello
A former Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court once said something to the effect that when it comes to criminal law, nine of the most learned judges in the nation argue back and forth for months and then decide an issue on a 54 split vote. Yet we expect a Police officer to decide the same issue in a matter of seconds and often under fire. When you think about it, the entire criminal justice system is like a great pyramid which is turned upside down and standing on its point. That simple point is now the lowest point on the pyramid, yet the entire pyramid depends on the actions taken by that point. And that point is the district patrol Officer. If the district patrol Officer is prevented from functioning, the entire pyramid will eventually collapse and disintegrate. And that is EXACTLY the goal of the political termites who infest our system and chew it up from the inside. When you have a group of politicians, many of whom are under active federal criminal indictment, making rules restricting law enforcement you are asking for trouble. When you have tax dodging corrupt criminals lurking in sensitive offices such as the district attorney’s office, you are heading for a disaster. When you allow an out of control, irresponsible mass media to incite violence and promote hatred just to bring in more advertising dollars, you are sealing your own doom. The Chief Justice referred to above was making the point that you have to make allowances for street Police Officers acting under tense, uncertain and rapidly evolving circumstances. When you remove the Officer’s discre-
tion, you are removing the Officer’s ability to make decisions. You basically paralyze the Officer. The people who truly suffer from this political reign of terror are the crime victims. And their numbers will vastly increase if these trends continue unchecked. When you study extremist groups in history you learn a curious fact. Right wing extremists like the Nazis and left-wing extremists like the Communists both use basically the same tactics to seize power. The first thing they do is to shatter the existing system of law enforcement, so they can replace it with a repressive totalitarian regime exerting complete control. Then they easily step in and seize total power, crushing any opposition in the process. (Can you say “cancel culture” boys and girls?) As Police Officers there isn’t much we can do to prevent this, since we are the initial targets. The only thing we can really do is to attempt to warn people that they are dancing on the railroad tracks with a train coming. Oh, I can hear it now, “Ignore that paranoid old pensioner. What does he know.” Believe me, for all our sakes, I would rather be ridiculed as paranoid, than looked back on as a prophet.

PENSION FUND by Ron Stagliano
Dear Brothers and Sisters, As most of you know I am voluntarily stepping away from my position as your elected representative at the Board of Pensions. I have been serving in that position with great pride for the last 17 years after a 33 ½ year career in the Police Department. What an honor and pleasure it has been to serve you in that capacity. It has been truly humbling to be entrusted with that responsibility. The Pension Fund has come a long way since my initial election in 2004. The fund has grown in assets from approximately $2 billion to well over $7 billion today. The fund is on much more solid ground today and should reach the 80% funding level in the next seven years or so. I am also proud of what has been accomplished with our Deferred Compensation plan. There have been many changes to the plan over the last 17 years and the fund has grown from about $100 million to over $1.7 billion today. That is a huge amount that officers have saved to supplement their pensions and secure their future. When I speak to new recruits at the police academy, we get close to 100% new enrollments and overall, about 75% of officers participate in deferred compensation. In addition to thanking all of you for your support over the last 17 years, I especially need to thank President John McNesby for his support. Nothing we have accomplished at the Pension Board could have been achieved without the support of John and his team. Bold steps were taken to reduce future costs of the pension and it took courage and foresight to commit to those changes. Steps were taken to ensure full funding from the city and to get a portion of the sales tax committed to the pension fund. We have kept the DROP plan secure for our members despite constant attacks from the media and other outside sources. Payouts have been made to our older retirees through the pension adjustment fund and hopefully will be again next year. I am still going to be available at the FOP to help any member that needs it and to support my successor Roosevelt Poplar as he adjusts to the position. Michael the Archangel Ministry Program “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all” Mark 9:35” By: Father Steven P. Wetzel, O.S.F.S. Chaplain/Director Several years ago, I was assigned as chaplain to Bishop Verot High School in Fort Myers, Florida. I must admit, it was not a bad assignment. Part of my assignment was to coordinate the Senior class community outreach program over the course of a year. I decided that one day per week we would commit to working with Habitat for Humanity in helping to assist in building three new homes. It was a great and rewarding experience. As we entered our fourth month, I noticed that our students were now voicing which group was building the nicer home as well as which group was the best at it. The experience was becoming more about them, rather on the mission at hand. I thought it would be a good teachable moment to share with them that it wasn’t about them, rather the focus was on the struggling families who would soon be coming to live in their new homes. We were there not to point out how great we were for taking the time to help build homes, rather we were there to respond to Jesus’ command to serve our brothers and sisters. In the end these very talented Seniors of Bishop Verot helped to complete the building of three beautiful homes. It was a real sense of giving back in service to one another and to the Gospel. Michael’s Brigade is an extension of Michael the Archangel Ministry Program. The mission is simple, our FOP Lodge #5 family, police officers active and retired and friends
are invited to join us in volunteer service by giving back to the community. It’s an opportunity especially for officers to come together outside of the work environment and help to make someone’s life a little better. Back when the pandemic hit us, Michael’s Brigade and FOP Lodge #5 was one of the first organizations along with others to respond to families and individuals in Northeast Philadelphia. Permission was given for us to arrange a drive thru for food distribution at Archbishop Ryan High School. On one day alone Philadelphia Police Officers, President John McNesby and members of the board of Michael the Archangel Ministry were able to distribute over 300 meals to families and individuals. All throughout the year, Michael’s Brigade participates in events such as organizing and arranging our quarterly blood drive, visiting St. Francis Inn where we bring food and warm clothing in the winter months. On several other occasions our officers have helped and assisted a retired disabled member by weeding his garden and helping to clean up on the outside of his property. One of the most meaningful events we have been blessed to participate in has been our Christmas visit to Shriners Hospitals for Children. To bring some joy and happiness to sick children is a blessing to all. At the end of the day as I remind everyone, it’s not about me or who is the greatest, rather it’s all about who is willing to help one another.

HELP! BY LOU CAMPIONE In October 2007, President McNesby asked for a review of all that the F.O.P. and Law Enforcement Health Benefits was doing with regard to our Behavioral Health programs. Together we reviewed all of our programs and made a series of recommendations to President John McNesby and to Law Enforcement Health Benefits Administrator Tom Lamb and now we work with current Administrator Jack Gaittens and Assistant Administrator Ray Convery. All of these recommendations were adopted and we continue to develop programs according to the needs of our membership. For example, L.E.H.B. Health Transformation Program is designed to help us lose fat, develop muscle, and to get into shape. L.E.H.B. is working with Damien Young of Warrior Consultants. All L.E.H.B. members, their spouse and dependent children 18 years or older, who are on the L.E.H.B. coverage are eligible to participate. This program has helped our members lose more than 5000 pounds of fat and gain 2000 pounds of muscle... Every New Year we make New Year’s resolutions. Every year the most common is to lose weight, exercise more, and eat healthier. One survey concluded 180 million people make New Year resolutions and 8% keep them. The most common reason for the failure is that we do not change the behavior that is causing us to make the resolutions. The fundamental issue is that the change has to come from within motivational speaker Matthew Kelly describes it as our lives change when our habits change. So if the resolution is improved health we strongly encourage you to join our L.E.H.B. trainer Damien Young at d.young@warriorworkoutcamps.com. The benefit of daily exercise also impacts reducing stress, anger, anxiety, depression, if you add prayer and meditation to your commitment you can also gain a spiritual benefit and in these times we all desperately need God’s help. Each of these programs developed as a result of needs of our members and their families. These resources have been tested and have proven themselves as valuable resources. These programs assist in the healing process, as we have seen lives, marriages, and families restored. We have the wealth of six hundred members of the Police Clergy Program, who represent every denomination and are willing to help with any spiritual concerns. We have approximately eleven hundred providers available: psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, and social workers to address mental health concerns. Whatever the need is we can find a resource. Please use the programs, to help let the healing begin, to help get to a safe place. Father Steve Wetzel leads our Michael the Archangel Chaplains program. The Police Department, Fraternal Order of Police, Law Enforcement Health Benefits; and the Department of Health are partnering to bring our members a smoking cessation support and assistance programs Dr. Trisha Macnair and Dr. Olga Calof summarize years of research in the long life equation published by Adams Media 2007, conclude smoking reduces life expectancy by eight years. They conclude, cigarette smoking is the single most important cause of preventable disease and premature death in developed countries. Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, many of which are highly toxic, such as arsenic, formaldehyde, cyanide, benzene, toluene, and acrolein. The good news is that research shows if you stop smoking you can undue most of the damage, contact L.E.H.B. at 215-763-8290. There have been more than two thousand studies that have concluded a strong spiritual foundation helps us in every aspect of life. This spiritual impact is very present when it comes to marriage; one survey concluded that the divorce rate for those families that pray together each day and attend weekly services was 1 out of 1052 as compared to 1 out of 2 for those who do not. There is an old saying the family that prays together stays together. A recent study concluded if a father practice’s his faith ninety one percent of the time the children will follow. Wow, what a powerful difference a father can make in the life of his children. The Judeo-Christian tradition of the father being the spiritual leader of his family is validated by social science. What a priceless legacy that a father can leave to his family for all eternity. God has ordained the family as the domestic church. In his book “When Divorce is not an option: How to Heal Your Marriage and Nurture Lasting Love.” The author Dr. Greg Popcak concludes “that people don’t just luck into successful marriages; it requires skills which can be taught.” He contends that if a couple seek a “marriagefriendly” counselor, meaning the counselor is committed to saving the marriage and has had formal training and supervision in martial therapy, they have success rates of 95 percent. Some of the resources that are committed to saving marriage can be found in Retrouvaille, Focus on the Family, New Life, Family Life Today, and Catholic Counselors.Com. Each of these resources has as a foundation a spiritual commitment to saving your marriage. If you want to make spiritual exercise a part of your daily routine, than you can start by finding a place to worship, praying, reading religious literature, and listening to religious material. There are Bibles available in daily reading versions offering 365 segments in twenty minute sessions. All of this can help you develop the spiritual muscle that you can depend upon to get you through the stress of our chosen career. There is an old expression that there are no atheists in foxholes. Our careers in law enforcement are the fox hole experience, we need all the help we can get to get through it. "Never Let Them Walk Alone" Hope everyone is having a Great Fall and staying safe with all the issues that we face every day. The Auxiliary is here for all families of Philadelphia Police Officers active or retired. We welcome all Police Supporters, during these trying times we will never say no to anyone who wishes to become part of a nice family group, with all the same issues and knows what it is like to be part of a First Responders life. The rotation of shifts, the cancellation of scheduled days off at the last minute. Breaking news stories which happen to be in the district or area your Police officer is working in at the time. All these are common life situations that we have all lived and shared and know how it feels. October is our annual membership renewal month. This past October 3rd we have hosted our Annual Designer Bag Bingo. For the first time ever by MidAugust all 300 tickets were sold. Never have we had
a sell-out so we are excited to see what 10-3-21 actually brings nets so the Auxiliary is able to continue to do the work we do to show our officers and their families we are here. Also, we held a special fund raiser event during the Bingo. All guest upon entering the Ballroom will have a chance to purchase an extra set of 3 game cards to be played during the first 3 games. For a $5 donation received extra cards but that $5 that was collected for the entire sale was given to the Family of PO Vladmir Maleev who passed away in August. His family will be given the entire amount collected in his memory. He was a gentle giant who cared for so many especially his family that was his entire world. May you RIP Officer Maleev. We are proud that on the weekend of 10-15-2021 thru 10-17-2021 our members will be volunteering at the RUN FOR THE BLUE which is sponsored by the Philadelphia Police Foundation. We are so honored to be welcomed back to volunteer at such a great event and cause. In Closing I would like to say that I am humble and proud that our members have elected me to be their President for another 3 years. The past 6 years have been an experience that I am so grateful to have had while I thought it was time to turn over the gavel, the members have faith in me that I can still stand and represent them, speak on their behalf, and listen when needed. I am looking forward to the next 3 years to continual work with the FOP and President Mc Nesby, other organizations and anyone who may need our help. So, in closing I would like to say, if you are interested and looking for a new venue in life, check us out. New members welcome, old members who may have strayed away are welcome back. Mary Di Mauro Book Summary: In the 1970's the Philadelphia Police Department resisted hiring women to the rank and file of police patrol. The Philadelphia Police Commissioner testified in Federal Court that "God in His infinite wisdom made men and woman different" in an effort to argue against the hiring of women. Four fictional female police recruits serve as a surrogate to tell the story of the challenges and experiences of the women that defied social norms to develop skills and rise to the challenges. The obstacles along the way were at times created by society standards and others were caused by chauvinism, jealousy and a rejection of social progress. Officer AJ Harris was the inspiration for friends, Kate Rossi, Samantha Kelly and Michelle Jones as they forged their way through the Police Academy as the first class of female recruits. The bond they developed continued after graduation as they learned how to depend on each other to develop skills and work toward promotion. When AJ Harris is found dead by a bullet from her police service revolver they are initially devastated. As they strive to fully understand what would drive their friend to such a drastic end, they risk relationships with their love interests, colleagues, family and the Philadelphia Police Department. As they dig for information, they navigate some twists and turns and are surprised that their biggest allies in their fight for truth were in plain sight. The end of the story affirms the instincts, self-training and skills of the three officers and sets the stage for another whodunit. CHARLES A. KITCHNER, JR. DOB: 07/30/1930 DOD: 09/10/2021 APPT:10/08/1962 RET: 04/10/1980 ASSN: 18th, Highway, CIS, Foot Traffic. Also served in the US Army. Charles A. Kitchner, Jr., 91, of Lebanon, passed away on Friday, September 10, 2021 surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Ruth A. (Carty) Kitchner. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was a son of the late Charles A., Sr. and Myrtle (Weddell) Kitchner. Charles served with the National Guard and retired from the Philadelphia Police Department after many years of service. After retirement, Charlie was employed at the Golden Nugget in Atlantic City for several years. He loved telling stories from his past. In addition to his wife, Charles is survived by: Two Step-Daughters: Laurie Yerk wife of Russ and Wanda Yerger wife of Dana; Grandchildren; Charles A. Kitcher, IV, Justin Kitchner, Alexandra Kitchner, Brandon Kitchner, Brooke Yerk, Stacey Yerk and Shane Yerk; Great-Grandsons: Christopher Coletti and Hunter Yerk. There are also several nieces and nephews surviving. He was pre-deceased by his son, Charles A. Kitch-

North Central Detective Division,the Homicide Division, and the Northeast Detective Division CECIL OSWALD WILLIS, who was affectionately called Uncle Cecil by many, was born on March 21, 1929 in Philadelphia, Pennsylva nia. He was the son of the late Richard Byrd Willis and Effie White Willis. At an early age, Cecil accepted Christ and was baptized at the Willis family church, Shady GroveBaptist, in Orange County, Virginia. The eighth of ten children, Richard, Wilbur, Thomas, Elmer, Adolph, Mable, Lillian, Isabel, and Irma, all who preceded Cecil in death, grew up in "The Village" a North Philadelphia neighborhood. Educated in the School District of Philadelphia, Cecil mended Walton and Mclntire elementary schools, Fitzsimons Junior High School, and Ben Franklin High School. Following graduation from Franklin, he continued his studies at Temple Community College in East Mt. Airy. His life-long commitment to education and training was evidenced in his appetite for self-improvement and advancement when he became interested in law enforcement. Cecil served the nation valorously in the United States Army before joining the Philadelphia Police Department. He was drafted in
1951, and after 4 months he was sent to Korea. Cecil received an honorable discharge after serving in the Korean War for 11 months. During that same year, he married the love of his life, the then Lirhan Ross (a resident of "The Village"). They were married on March 11, 1951 in Wilmington, Delaware, and are the proud parentis of two children Cecil Karl Willis and Pamela Celeste Willis Bradley. Cecil adored Lithan with his whole heart. Cecil was lucky to be married to his best friend for almost 70 years. Lithan devoted her life to taking care of Cecil until the very end. She made sure he never missed one day of dialysis in 11 years. Their love story was iconic. There is a saying that an "apple does not fall far from the tree which proved true for Cecil's children, Cecil " Butch" and Pamela. Cecil always instilled a standard of excellence throughout their childhood and adult life while teaching them to pay close attention to details, like any good detective. These attributes served Butch well as he became an accomplished high-level budget analyst for the Pentagon, while Pamela became a systems engineer for General Electric and Lockheed Martin. These gifts Cecil passed on to his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Cecil served 54 years in the criminal justice system and received many commendations during his tenure in recognition of his devotion and outstanding performance to dury. Cecil began his career with the Philadelphia Police Department, where he was employed there for 25 years, following the career path of his brother, Thomas M. Willis, who also served 25 years.
From 1953 to 1978, Cecil was a highly respected detective and was then promoted to Corporal. He was sent to the 35th Police District to run rhe Operations Room. Cecil was later assigned to the North Central Detective Division,the Homicide Division, and the Northeast Detective Division, where he retired in 1978. After retirement from the Philadelphia Police Department, Cecil joined the Defender Association of Philadelphia, where he served as Senior Investigator in the Homicide Division from 1978 to 2003. He was also a proud member of the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) and the National Defense Investigator Association. With his wife Uthan, Cecil was a long-rime member of the Woodcrest United Church of Christ. Cecil and Lithan were in travel clubs with friends through the years and took many trips around the world; including Europe, Asia and the Far East. Cecil's adventurous spirit instilled the curiosity to travel in his children and grandchildren. Cecil loved and lived for his grandchildren. Their escapades were legendary. He never missed a play, birthday party, horseback riding event, basketball tournament, or graduation. He beamed with pride with every milestone in their lives. Julian and Eryka always knew they were loved beyond measure. Their bond with their Pop Pop will be with them for the rest of their lives. Cecil was also the consummate host. He had a magnetic and engaging personality. He lit up the room as soon as he walked in. Cecil could not help but take command of the room. He has larger than life and made the best speeches or toasts. Cecil was a 119
great storyteller and family comedian who could always hold court, reciting countless jokes, poems, or stories. His gracious horne was not only the hub of family life for his children and extended fumily but was also a place where he regularly enjoyed playing pinochle, held spirited chats with friends, and watched sports. Cecil enjoyed sports as a participant (golf and fishing) and as a spectator. Above all his hobbies and interests, Cecil was at his core a familyman, and made an amazing impact on the lives of those who loved him the most. Cecil always believed it took a village to raise a child. He understood his role of being a role model and surrogate father and grandfather to family and friends. He was a daring father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend who early on steeped his family in African American history and culture. He was vivacious, generous, fun -loving, and fiercely loyal person who will forever be missed. Cecil's legacy of love will be cherished by his devoted wife, Lithan Willis; two children Cecil Karl Willis and Pamela Celeste Will is Bradley; One son-in-law Rendell Bradley; Two grandchildren Julian Alexander Bradley and Eryka Lithan LaRen Bradley; One sister-in-law Ruth Willis. A graduate of North Catholic High School with the class of 1965, Tom would go on to serve his country for a brief time with the United States Army before serving the city of Philadelphia as a police officer for the 15th district where he remained for 25 years. Retirement wouldn’t stop him from working and he continued as a delivery driver for both Airborne Express and DHL and also worked as a security officer for Dave and Buster’s. Fiercely devoted to his family, Tom treasured time spent with them, whether it was watching sunrises and sunsets in Cape May, NJ or enjoying good food and a spirited happy hour, he was always happiest when with the people he loved. Tom will also be remembered for being a hard worker and instilling the importance of a strong work ethic in his family while also being the most selfless 120

James Patrick Hartnett, Sr. (Pop), was the son of the late William and Josephine (nee Zwolinska). He was the brother of the late William Hartnett, Josephine Donahue, and Dolores Hughes. James served his country in the United States Navy and later served his city as a Philadelphia Police Officer from October 17, 1977 until November 5, 1990. As a Rookie he served in the 25th District, then going to the 8th District and finally worked at the Roundhouse. He was on the Board of Directors for Police and Fire Handicapped Children and was the Police Liaison for the Valley Day School. Upon retiring from the Police Department, Jim used his skills to help troubled youth. He was a man who loved his wife, family and God. James was married to (and survived by) his wife Dorothy (nee Yacovelli) Hartnett for 52 years. Together they raised 7 children, all of whom Jim is survived by: Jimmy (Kathy), Kelly Martinelli (Sam), Michael, Jennifer Himes (Kenny), Brian (John), Danny (Jaci), Kevin (Amanda), as well as their adopted son Shawn Barrett, making that 8 children. Pop loved (as well as spoiled!) his 12 Grandchildren: Barbara Jean, Sean, Cory, Samantha, Brian, Emily, Shane, Dalton, Cienna, Ryean, Brynn-Rose, and Chase; and a Great
Grandson Oliver and was considered "Pop" by many others. Jim was a man of great loyalty, courage, devotion and most importantly, love. I will never meet a man as wonderful as he was. He truly was my hero. He devoted his life to not only protecting the people he loved, but also many others. He was a heroic man who served in the United States Navy, and was a Philadelphia Police Officer. He was more brave than I will ever be. All sixteen years of my life, he was always so supportive. his best to be at every dance recital, musical, and school event that I ever participated in. No matter what it was, he was there every second that he could be. Not only did he do that for me, but he did it for all of my cousins. And there are a lot of us. Pop created an absolutely beautiful, crazy and amazing family. Although I can not say we are perfect, because nothing in life is, he made us as close to perfect as we could be. In my lifetime, Pop was the glue that held this family together. I hope that we can all stick together and make him proud every day. I will never be more grateful for him bringing this family to life. I could not ask for anything more. My Pops love for my MomMom was absolutely unconditional to say the least. 52 years of marriage, and eight children is seriously incredible. I hope that in all of our lifetimes we get to experience a love like theirs. The endless pain and suffering he lived through these past few months was terribly unfair. But his fears and pain have gone away, and he is happy in the hands of our God. I am so glad that we as a family had the chance to spend these last few weeks together with Pop, and I am happy that in his last moments he knew that he was loved by so many. I know he is happy up in Heaven, and that he is watching over each and every one of us. So cheers to you Pop, and the wonderful life you lived.
