ACT TWO

Scout and Jem talk about a person who is crazy and who lives isolated in his house and never goes out.

Jem: Look, in that house lives a crazy man who has a son called Boo, they keep him chained.

Scout: What?

(They walk out in front of Boo's house)

Jem: It comes out at night when everything is dark and everyone is asleep, if you wake up at night you can hear it.

Scout: I wonder what he's doing there, I wonder what he's like.

Jem: Judging by his footprints he's about two meters tall, he eats dead squirrels and all the cats he can catch, he even has a long scar that covers his entire face.

Scout: I don't believe you Jem, you're lying. How is it possible that someone could do something like that.

Jem: Well, I don't know, I haven't met him in person yet, but everything I've told you is what I've heard. If you want we can check it

Scout: (cara de queeeeee) You're crazy.

(they run away)

Mrs. Cunningham appears to pay her debt to Atticus who helped him with a case because Atticus is a lawyer but she couldn't pay him So she pays him with vegetables or objects

(SCOUT SE ENCUENTRA JUGANDO CUANDO LLEGA LA MRS.)

Scout: Good morning Mrs. Cunningham

Mrs. Good morning girl

Scout: My dad is getting ready, ¿would you like to call him for you? (deja de jugar y va al lado de Mrs.)

Mrs: No, its okay I don't want to bother.

SCOUT CORRE ADENTRO DE LA CASA PARA PODER LLAMAR A ATTICUS

Scout: It's not a bother, I think he'll be happy to see you… Atticus, Atticus its Mrs, Cunningham.

Atticus: I know, but I think that he feels embarrassing to say thank you

Scout: Why he always bring us things all weeks? (pensativa)

Atticus: He is paying me for legal work I did for him.

Scout: But, why hes paying in that way

Atticus: That’s the only way that he can, he not have enough money.

Scout: Is poor?

Atticus: yes (viendo un periódico o un papel?)

Atticus: In some way we are

Scoup: we are as poor as Cuningham? (recostada en uno de los postes)

Atticus: No, not exactly. They are farmers, peasants, the depression affected them more than anyone else. (SE VA VIENDO EL PAPEL)

Atticus scolds/draws Scout's attention when talking about Boo

Scout: Atticus, do you really think Boo Radley comes around at night and looks in my window? Jem says he does, this afternoon when we stopped by his house... (Atticus interrupts her)

Atticus: Scout, I told you and Jem to leave those poor people alone (he looks at her ugly jsjs) please stay away from their house and try to avoid trouble

Scout: Yes sir.

Atticus: No more reading for tonight miss, it's time to sleep.

Scout: What time is it?

Atticus: 8:30

Scout: Can I see your watch?

(ATTICUS SMILES AT HIM AND SHOWS HIM THE WATCH)

Scout: Atticus, Jen says that one day this watch will be his.

Atticus: That's right.

Scout: why?

Atticus: Well, it's customary that the father's father keeps the watch.

Scout: What will you give me?

Atticus: Well, there aren't many things of value that belong to us, but there is a pearl necklace, a ring that belonged to your mother and I kept them so that one day they will be yours.

(THEY HUG AND GIVE EACH OTHER A KISS, THE SCOUT GOES TO LIST)

Atticus: Good night Scout.

Scout: Good night.

Atticus receives news from a judge named John Taylor who tells him that he has to defend Tom from an accusation in which he is said to have strangled a woman.

Judge: Good morning Mr. Atticus.

Atticus: Good morning, Mr. Judge.

Atticus: It's hot, isn't it?

Judge: yes, yes it is

(A FEW SECONDS GO BY WITHOUT SAYING ANYTHING)

Judge: Atticus, did you know about Tom Robinson?

Atticus: Yes sir (nods)

Judge: tomorrow the judge will meet to indict him... mmm I was thinking that you could take charge of that case

Atticus: (surprised)

Judge: I know you are busy at your law firm these days and that your children need you to dedicate time to them.

Atticus: Yes sir (thinks about it for a few seconds) I'll take the case sir.

Judge: tomorrow I'll send you a notice when the hearing is starting... well, see you tomorrow, Atticus.

Atticus: Yes sir.

(the judge gets up and leaves)
