this time, learning under the guidance of Reb Chaim Brisker ‫זצ“ל‬. Decades later, he would still speak in awe of his days in Brisk. He once told his great nephew, Reb Nosson Tzvi ‫ זצ“ל‬that in Gan Eden, out of all his Rebbeim and the geonim of all ages, he would choose to learn with Reb Chaim Brisker.

Considered one of the top prospects of his time, Reb Leizer Yudel was chosen by Reb Elya Baruch Kammai ‫זצ“ל‬, the Rosh Yeshiva of Mir, to marry his daughter Malka, setting the stage for the Finkel name to become synonymous with the Mirrer Yeshiva.

HARAV LEIZER YUDEL FINKEL ‫ זצוק‘‘ל‬AS A YOUNG ROSH YESHIVA

In 1907, Reb Elya Baruch appointed Reb Leizer Yudel as a Rosh Yeshiva in Mir, and he began to deliver shiurim there. Having mastered various Litvishe Yeshivas’ approaches to learning, Reb Leizer Yudel’s range in Torah was phenomenal and his shiurim became extremely sought after.

Later on, Reb Leizer Yudel began to worry that bekius would be lost. He announced a special “drive”. Anyone who would learn Bava Kamma, Bava Metzia, Bava Basra and Kesuvos (over 500 blatt) in one year mastering the Gemara with Tosfos would receive the equivalent of $50, a princely sum in those days!

During World War I, the town of Mir was in danger of attack from both Russian and German forces. The decision was taken to move the Yeshiva. At first they settled in Stavitz, a border town, then Minsk and finally in Poltava, Ukraine.
