GETTING THE BEST OUT OF YOUR TEAM

There are 3 basic rules of engagement with your staff which are guaranteed to ➢ create a more motivated team ➢ improve performance and ➢ increase productivity Who would not want that in their school or office? But too often managers do not give these rules the priority they deserve.

Rule 1. Offer support, real support. Show your staff that you are there for them in order to help them do their jobs better. That includes supporting them when they make a mistake. Here’s an example. A member of staff makes a presentation in front of their team. It’s poor. You have 3 choices. The first is to ignore them. Bad choice. The second is to berate them for making such a poor presentation. Even worse. The third is to deal with the failure by offering assistance as to how they can improve on their presentation skills. Which will have the biggest impact on your staffs' loyalty and productivity?

Sounds basic? It is but many managers ignore this advice. Rule 2. Praise, and make it specific. Seek out opportunities to say ‘well done’ or ‘thank you’. Make it genuine and don’t make the mistake of waiting for the big outcomes. The value of praise is that it makes people feel good about themselves and people who feel good about themselves work that bit harder ultimately achieving better results. Rule 3. Show your staff you care for them not just as someone responsible for a task but as a human being. If they have just returned from sick leave, enquire as to their wellbeing and if they are new to your organisation, ask how they are settling in. Listen to their answers. Hear what they say. This is not about the task but about them personally and goes a long way to increase their loyalty to you and dedication to their work.
