Information from your Our Jewish medical professionals, Manchester-based Dr Teresa Kelly, a consultant obstetrician, Susie Weisz, a midwife and London-based Dr Yossi Adler, a GP answer some of your questions on the COVID-19 vaccine including if you’re pregnant. Who is eligible for the COVID-19 booster vaccine? “In response to the new Omicron variant of the virus, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) now advises that all adults aged 18 to 39 years should be offered a booster dose, in order of descending age groups, to increase their levels of protection. Booster doses should be given no sooner than three months after the primary course.” “All severely immunosuppressed individuals should be offered their booster dose no sooner than three months after completing their primary course of 3 doses. Young people aged 12 to 15 years should receive a second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, no sooner than 3 months after the first dose. As with the first dose of the vaccine, people will be notified by age group, with the older and more clinically vulnerable receiving their booster dose first.” – Dr Yossi Adler

Is it too late to get my first dose? “No, it is never too late, and it has never been easier. All you need to do is visit www.nhs.uk/covidvaccine or dial 119 which is free of charge. Or visit www.nhs.uk/grab-a-jab to find a convenient vaccine walk-in site near you (you do not even need an NHS number or to be registered with a GP for this).” – Dr Yossi Adler

Can I still catch COVID-19 after having the vaccine? “The COVID-19 vaccines will reduce the chance of 38

you suffering from COVID-19. It may take a few days for your body to build up some protection from the vaccination. Like all medicines, no vaccine is completely effective – some people may still get COVID-19 despite being vaccinated, but this should be less severe. The vaccines will help reduce your risk of becoming seriously ill or dying from COVID-19 and will reduce your risk of catching and spreading COVID-19.” – Dr Yossi Adler

Why do children need to get vaccinated? “COVID-19 can affect anyone, regardless of their age, and we still do not fully understand the damage that can be done by this terrible virus. My practice is recommending that all children aged 12 and over have the COVID-19 vaccine. While most children infected with COVID-19 experience mild symptoms, some do become quite unwell and some go on to develop serious multi-organ inflammatory disease. Even with children experiencing mild symptoms, they will need to self-isolate which will have major disruptions to their studies. After nearly two years of disruption, it is vital our children stay in school.” “My colleagues are treating a growing number of young people who are living with ‘long COVID’ which has side effects such as extreme fatigue and weakness. Some young people are missing out on the things they want to do in life because of it, and this is heart-breaking. And, although the vaccine does not eliminate transmission, there is good evidence that it reduces it. Vaccination also reduces the risk of children infecting vulnerable grandparents and other members of the community at home or at the synagogue.” – Dr Yossi Adler

Is the vaccine safe for children? “The medicines regulator, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), has confirmed the Pfizer vaccine is safe and effective for 12 to 17-year olds. This followed a rigorous review of the safety, quality, and effectiveness of the vaccines in this age group. The UK has also benefited from having data from the US, Canada and Israel which have already offered vaccines universally to young people aged 12 to 15 years.”– Dr Yossi Adler

Is COVID-19 serious in pregnancy? “If you are pregnant and catch COVID-19 you may have a mild illness or no symptoms. But we have seen many more pregnant women becoming sick with COVID-19. Getting COVID-19 when you are pregnant increases the risk that you will be admitted to hospital, and the most recent data shows 1 in 5 of the most seriously unwell patients in intensive care with COVID-19 are unvaccinated pregnant women. In the later stages of pregnancy (after 28 weeks), people are at increased risk of becoming seriously unwell with COVID-19. Specifically, there is higher risk of admission to intensive care, premature birth, pre-eclampsia, and stillbirth.” – Dr Teresa Kelly

Will the vaccine give me or my baby COVID-19? “The vaccine cannot give you or your baby COVID-19, but it will protect you both at a time that you are both vulnerable. There are no additional ingredients that are harmful to pregnant women or their babies in the vaccine. Around 84,000 pregnant women have been vaccinated in the UK so far. New data published by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has provided further evidence for the safety of COVID-19 vaccination in pregnancy, with good birth outcomes in vaccinated women who had their babies between January and August this year. Pregnant women who are vaccinated are far more protected against serious COVID-19 than those who are unvaccinated.” – Dr Teresa Kelly
