ATTENTION SCHOOLS We will be having our bi-monthly Senco support meeting on Zoom Wednesday 5th May at 8.30pm Inviting SENDCO’s, inclusion Leads, and Early Years Managers to meet Amy Barrett SALT and Alannah McKaskie OT, from the NHS Enhanced Paediatric Services who run the monthly COMPASS OT and SAL clinics. Amy and Alannah will explain the different services they offer as part of the free COMPASS clinic consultations and additional support that can be bought in by the school if required. Steve Booth, the SENDIASS (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Information, Advice and Support Service) manager from Salford will also be attending this session. SENDIASS provide legally based, impartial, confidential and accessible information, advice and support for parents of children and young people with SEND.

VOTE CONSERVATIVE ON THURSDAY 6TH MAY Dear fellow Sedgley residents, It has been an honour and privilege representing you on Bury Council for the last 5 years, I thank you for affording me the opportunity and for all the support you have shown. It has been a fulfilling, rewarding and frustrating experience, probably in equal measure. I am grateful for the siyata dishmaya I had in being able to help lots of people and causes within the ward and the community, and whilst it was not always possible to achieve the desired outcomes in all cases, we know that we do our hishtadlus and Hashem decides what happens. As most of you will know, due to family and other commitments, I am standing down and not putting myself forward for re-election this year. The time demands are too great to allow myself to dedicate the time needed to fulfill the role properly. However, I urge you to continue the progress and vote Conservative in these local elections to ensure that we are not taken for granted as we used to be. Opposition is absolutely vital in politics and if Labour were to gain the seat, they will become complacent once again as they were previously. Even those from the Kehilla who support Labour will agree that Labour have taken much more notice of our community’s needs since we have had local opposition, that is just the way politics works. I have seen internally how this corrupt Labour run council prioritise spending and investment in areas where they are under threat electorally and we must keep them on their toes by ensuring we maintain a Conservative councillor in Sedgley. You will all have noticed that under Labour, every year the council tax goes up and the public services they provide goes down. That is Labour’s legacy, I have seen first hand the ineptitude of these Labour councillors, they have no financial competence or business acumen and are wasting your money without regard. And if they dare say, its all central government’s cuts, let me tell you what we all know, when they want money, be it £2 million for wrecking Bury New Road by reducing it to 1 lane or extra money for their back pockets by increasing their councillor allowances, they find the money but when it’s for potholes, regular bin collections or other basic public services, they cry poverty. So please use your vote wisely on May the 6th and send the message to Labour that we won’t tolerate their profligacy and wastefulness. Vote for Carol Bernstein and the Conservatives for financial responsibility, lower council tax and better public services. Kol tuv & hatzlocho rabo

On behalf of all those that Tzorchai Amchoh has helped in our Pesach “Kol Dichfin” campaign, we would like to express our appreciation & thanks for your generous donations. It literally made their simchas Yom Tov, that otherwise wouldn’t have been possible. A ‫ש‬With Shavuos approaching, many families are awaiting our assistance OUR PESACH CAMPAIGN ADVERT again. For families struggling to make ends meet, it’s impossible to make ‫ו‘‘ט‬ without help. The Torah instructs us that on Shavuos we’re to include the lessra n is because, to less fortunate in our ‫שמחת יו‘‘ט‬. A Perhaps a reason is, that to receive the Torah, one must be united with Klal Yisroel, since the Torah was only given to the Klal as a whole, not to individuals. The way to be part of the Klal is by taking care that our less fortunate brethren will also have a joyous ‫יו‘‘ט‬. Q Our goal is to give a minimum of £300 per family. The money is distributed by local Rabonim who know the families. Won’t you please ‘take care’ of, at least, one family or as close to it as you can? In that zechus, may you merit a happy & uplifting ‫ & יו‘‘ט‬to be ‫ מקבל‬the Torah with joy. Remember that not only does charity not diminish one’s fortune, but H’Shem guarantees that if you are ‫ משמח‬His, He will be ‫ משמח‬yours. THE CLEVER ANSWER Rabbi Yonoson Eibschutz was chief Rabbi of the Lorraine province in Germany, & was beloved by all. Everyone loved him for his kindness & respected him for his wisdom, intelligence & sharp mind. He was truly a great Talmud Chochom & leader of the Jewish community. Thus it became a common occurrence that when a Jewish baby was born, people would wish the parents PG. 1 “Mazel Tov, may your son OF NEWSLETTER grow up to be another Reb Yonoson Eibschutz” & the parents would close their eyes & answer sincerely “Amen, Amen.” It wasn’t only the jews who loved their Rabbi. The non-Jews loved & respected him as well. They would bring him all their disputes, & questions, & Reb Yonoson would always solve their problems. Thus, Reb Yonoson became very popular & beloved by everyone. Well-not really by everyone. There was one man who had always hated Reb Yonoson. R This man was none other than the very ruler of the province himself, the Duke of Lorraine. Hardly a week passed that the Duke wouldn’t call Reb Yonoson to his palace. There was always some pretence. One time he wanted to test the Rabbi’s remarkable memory. The next time his intelligence. Once he asked him to play chess against the chess

champion of all Europe. Next was to solve a mathematical puzzle that puzzled all the university professors. As Reb Yonoson always came up with the right answers, the Duke’s hatred knew no bounds. One day the Rabbi was sitting in the Bais Medrash, studying the Talmud. Suddenly, the door flew open violently, & three of the leading Jews of Metz, came in crying & sobbing. “Rebbe, Rebbe,” they cried, “All the Jews must leave the Duchy of Lorraine by sunset. The Duke just signed the order, & his messenger has just announced his edict.” Without another word the Rabbi dressed himself &

hurried down to the Duke’s Palace. As he entered, Reb Yonoson saw a sly smile on the duke’s face.

“The Duke must have arranged something really sinister to issue such a severe edict,” thought Reb Yonoson to himself, “but, after all we have the Ribbono Shel Olam on our side.” “What is this sudden order to expel the Jews from your province, your Majesty?” quietly asked Reb Yonoson. “Is it fair to force people who lived here for years to become wanderers in a few hours?” “Well,” replied the Duke slowly, obviously enjoying this moment of triumph over the cleverest Jew in the Province, “I don’t know whether it is fair or not, but I do know that I am merely fulfilling a prophecy which I found written in one of the old history books of this Duchy. You see, my dear Rabbi,” he continued, “Perhaps I am not as clever as you are, but I certainly deem it my privilege to do what our history books have said would most certainly come about.” “Well,” replied Reb Yonoson, “What is it, then, that is found in your old history books?” “Nothing much,” replied the Duke, “Merely a sentence about the Jews. Something that reads like this: A terrible event is coming, the likes of which the world has never seen. Now, you see Rabbi, I am not bad, I am merely fulfilling a prophecy. Oh, by the way how many letters are there in that prophecy of the old history book I just mentioned?” “68,” replied Reb Yonoson almost immediately, for so marvellous was his memory. “And the number of PG. 2 words?” continued the Duke, OF NEWSLETTER as if to hurt the Rabbi. “17, precisely the number of letters found in the following Hebrew sentence in our Torah; Am Yisroel Chai L’olmei Ad-the people of Israel will live forever.” The Duke was truly amazed at the Rabbi’s quick & sure memory. Suddenly he smiled. “Tell me, would you like to do away with my edict that expels all the Jews from my province?” “Yes of course,” answered the Rabbi, “What are your conditions?” “Very simple,” continued the Duke. “Tell me just how many Jews are there in my state?” “45,760,” replied Reb Yonoson. “If so,” said the Duke, “then here is what you do to save your people. In an hour my edict goes into effect. Before that hour you must come back with a piece of parchment no bigger than the piece on which your people ordinarily write their Mezuza. You will write on it the sentence from your Torah which you just mentioned, forty five thousand...eh, eh, how many Jews do you say there are in this duchy?” “I said 45,760.” 24

“If before that hour you can write out on an ordinary mezuza parchment, 45,760 times, the sentence about the people of Israel you just mentioned, I will definitely tear up the order expelling the Jews.” a Reb Yonoson’s face looked deeply worried. What a responsibility the Duke put on him. Suddenlly he smiled, turned to the Duke & said, “Please G-d I’ll be back in less than an hour. The G-d of Israel can do everything. A In less than an hour Reb Yonoson showed the Duke the completed parchment. The Duke looked and frowned. “What is this?” he shouted. “Are you laughing at me? What is this paper you brought here?” “Just what you requested, your Majesty, 45,760 times the sentence ‫עם ישראל חי לעולמי עד‬. Begin with the big ‫ ע‬in the centre, go in each direction & you’ll find that there are 45,760 complete Hebrew sentences there.” The Duke looked. He didn’t understand it yet completely, but he instinctively knew that Reb Yonoson had outsmarted him & defeated him once again. The edict was torn up. A half a year later there was a big tumult in the Rabbi’s house. The Duke’s carriage was outside. Out came the Duke & in he walked to Reb Yonoson’s private study. “Rabbi,” he said immediately upon entering, “Happy is the people that has such

leaders. I just finished reading the parchment. Yes it is true. The sentence is found there 45,760 times.” THE CHOICE OF MERCHANDISE A A PARABLE FROM THE CHOFETZ CHAIM ZT’’L a A certain Jew once failed in business & decided to go overseas & try his luck in a distant land. He took passage on a ship that was sailing to Africa & there he settled. As he looked about, he noted that the natives had no cows, & since he was familiar with dairy farming, he imported a few cows from a neighboring country & began selling his dairy products. He prospered & with time he became wealthy. Finally he felt it was time to return home. He thought to himself, “shall I just take back with me all the money I have made? There is no profit in that. I would do better to take merchandise and sell it there.” And what better merchandise could he take, he thought foolishly, than the same thing that was so successful here? He would take along plain cold milk. On the ship that would take him back he loaded his cargo: barrel after barrel of milk. As he was about to leave, he met a friend who dealt in gold and precious stones. His friend tried PG. 3 to persuade him to buy some OF NEWSLETTER jewellery as a present for his wife. He reluctantly consented when his friend convinced him that it would pay to buy the jewelry here, since they were much cheaper here, than in his homeland. He boarded the ship, and when the vessel landed, he saw the cargo being unloaded, and he went to claim his barrels of milk. And now a nasty surprise awaited him. From afar he could already detect the powerful stench. The entire shipment of milk had turned rancid, and there was nothing to be done but to dump the entire shipment into the sea...In utter despair the man watched his entire savings, of his years abroad, going down to the bottom of the ocean. He had left his country a poor man and returned a poor man. Miserable and wretched as he felt, he suddenly reminded himself of the jewels he had reluctantly bought from his friend in Africa before boarding the ship. Off he went to the local jeweler and sold them, receiving enough money to support his family for several years. The spirit of a man gets born with a physical body

into this lowly world, and he finds himself well supplied with milk, and ...all kinds of food. Food and other material needs are important in this world, necessary to keep a person alive. So a human being imagines that in all the world there is no merchandise more worthy than them, and he decides to invest all his energy and money to acquire them. He works to keep his physical body well taken care of & pays no attention to the spiritual gold and jewelry that can be acquired with such little effort, at such little cost. Wherever we turn, whatever we do, there is Torah to be learned; and mitzvos to be kept. When we bring such “merchandise” to the world of truth, the Hereafter, we will find that they are worth more than the finest gold and jewels. Yet when a human being’s appointed time comes to depart this world and return “home”, what “merchandise” does he take with him? He takes to the grave a body that was pampered and well fed, all his years on earth. He arrives there and at the port of entry, the heavenly court of justice, will ask: “Well, what have you brought with you? You know, you have come from a land of gold and precious stones– Torah and mitzvos. Did you bring a large supply with you?” Well, as the human spirit stands there, suffused in mortal shame, he will suddenly recall that once, absent-mindedly, he gave a poor beggar a few pennies. At a certain dinner, in order to make a good impression on his neighbors, he gave a modest donation to a yeshiva. In short, he realizes now that without attaching too much importance to it, he did buy and bring with him a few valuable “bits of jewelry”. Of course, he will get full value for his few fine pieces of gold and jewels. But imagine his anguish and mortification at the thought that he will remain a pauper eternally, when he could have brought such a great fortune with him if only he had had the sense to know which "merchandise” to buy. THE SCOFFER A young woman once came crying bitterly to the holy Gaon and Tzadik Rabbi Akiva Eiger of blessed memory. Her’s was indeed a sad story. She came of an orthodox family and had married a junior civilservant. Her husband had never been very religious, and in order to advance himself in his profession had gone over to Christianity. Although she had begged him many times to divorce her in a rabbinical court he stubbornly refused unless she was prepared to pay him a large sum of money, which she could not possibly raise.

Rabbi Akiva asked: “Has everything possible been done to bring him to reson?” “Yes,” answered the woman, "everything possible has been done, but he only laughed and made fun of it.” “Will he appear before us if we ask him to come?” asked Rabbi Akiva. “Perhaps he will, because he takes pride in his courage and he would not like to appear a coward.” a Next day he came strutting in with an insolent grin on his face, but Rabbi Akiva spoke to him very gently. “Why do you refuse to divorce your poor wife? Do you not wish to grant her her freedom?” “I refuse on principle,” replied the man haughtily. I have already given her a civil divorce, but I do not believe in all you ancient superstitions. I have already divorced the whole Jewish religion and as far as I am concerned she is free. What more do you want?” “As to that, my son,” replied Rabbi Akiva, “it is not possible for a Jew to divorce his G-d, for G-d is called in holy scripture the husband of the Jewish people, and only He can divorce us. G-d never abandons His people and even if you turn away from Him you are still one of His people. That is why we beg your to divorce your wife.” I have told her my conditions already.” the man broke in angrily, “if you want me to do something I don’t PG. 4 believe in, you have to pay OF NEWSLETTER me for it, and pay me well. Let me quote to you from a Mishna in tractate Kiddushin. A woman can be released from her marriage in one of two ways. If her husband divorces her or,“ Rabbi Akiva’s voice became stern, “’through the death of her husband.’ A daughter in Israel whom you have treated disgracefully must be freed from you, and freed she will be, one way or the other. Consider, if you refuse the divorce the other way may come about. Consider it well.” For a few moments fear struck into the man’s heart. He seemed to hear from far off his mother’s PROVIDING FINANCIAL AID

voice and the chanting voices in the Cheder, “a woman can be released.” There was a tightness in his throat and his knees grew weak. But then he gave a harsh laugh. “Pure superstition!” he exclaimed, “and you thought to frighten me with that. How dare you threaten me. Do you think you are dealing with a little Jew’? I will show you who you are dealing with. The police will hear of this,“ and he went out banging the door behind him. But what was happening in the street? People running from all directions and shouting. The man who had just come out of the door, reeling like a drunkard, his face white as chalk, a hand clutching at his heart, tried to hold on to the wall and with one loud scream collapsed on the pavement. A doctor came quickly but he was to late. The police report read: “Man, aged 35 died in the street from heart attack, brought about by unknown causes.“ His widow was free. THOUGHTS ON SHAVUOS Shavuos actually means weeks. The Yom Tov is called so, because it is the product of the period beginning from ‫ & יציאת מצרים‬its purpose. We say in the Hagadah: ‫הוציאנו מעבדות לחרות מיגון לשמחה‬ To become free, they had to accept H,Shem as their master and obey his commands as set forth in the Torah, and this we see, is “freedom” and “joy.” How? One who cannot give up material comforts in order to do things of spiritual value is not free, even if he does not have a visible master. One can be a slave to a house, to a job, or a business; to a standard of living or to a trend if these prevent one from doing the things that matter & that really benefit the person. In Egypt, we were freed not only from the slavery of the body, but from the bondage of the mind & spirit as well, for physical liberation alone is worthless. How did we attain this freedom? Through acceptance of G-d as our Master. But how did that occur? Because in Egypt we witnessed G-d, revealing Himself as Lord of nature, the G-D of the world, as vindicator of the oppressed, and as judge of the arrogant. (Reb Shamshon Rafael Hisch Zt”l) As our fathers went after H’Shem in the dessert & did not even prepare ‘food for the road’, so we must be always ready to fulfil H’Shem’s desires. When we follow where H’Shem leads, then we are truly free & experience the bliss of serving H’Shem in this life, and, what's greater, in the eternal life of the world to come.
