‫פרשת קדשים‬ ‫מצוה תוכחה לישראל שאינו נוהג כשורה‬

‫בסײד‬

In the town called Ostrow where the ‫ מהרשײא‬came from the following story took place. There was a terrible plague in the town and many people had died. No one knew why or what to do about the situation. The Rov and the Beis Din decided to make a ‫ יום תפלה‬and ‫ תענית‬for all the town to be ‫ מחזק‬and to do ‫תשובה‬. The Rov also announced that if anyone could think of a reason that this tragedy had come to town then they should tell the Rov. In this town there was a man who never came to shul or davened with a Minyan. Two people thought that he might have a secret that was causing the plague so they decided to watch him to see what he got up to. Late at night this man left his house and walked into the nearby forest with the two men following. As they went further into the forest, the men lost sight of him and in fact became scared of their dark and creepy surroundings so they went back to town. In the morning the two men went to the Rov to tell him what had occurred. The Rov said that the next night he would come with the men into the forest. Night came and the Rov and the men followed the strange man into the forest. The suspicious man stopped by a large rock and took out a siddur from his pocket and started to say ‫תקון חצות‬. He was crying as he davened and then the onlookers heard a second voice but they could not see anyone else. The Rov said “This is not a bad man and I would like to see who the other person is. “ They waited until the davening was over and followed the man out of the forest and confronted him. The Rov said to the man “we are sorry that we thought bad of you but tell me, what happened to the other person who was with you?” The man did not want to answer but the Rov 18 Issue 1006

insisted. The man said “I really do not want to say but as the Rov insists then I will tell. For many years I have been ‫ נתאבל‬the ‫חרבן‬ ‫ בית המקדש‬and I have been rewarded from ‫ שמים‬to say ‫תקון חצות‬ together with ‫ ירמיהו הנביא‬who witnessed the ‫ חרבן בית המקדש‬and his was the second voice that you heard.” The Rov was amazed and he asked the ‫“ צדיק‬If you are ‫ זוכה‬to such a great revelation then why have you not davened for the ending of the plague?” Do you know who or what is causing the plague? And also, why do you not come to shul and daven with a minyan? The man answered “Tomorrow morning I will come to ‫ שחרית‬and I will tell all. Word spread around the town that a Hidden ‫ צדיק‬was coming to shul in the morning. The whole town turned up for ‫ שחרית‬and the ‫ צדיק‬arrived in his Tallis and Tefillin. When the people saw him they became afraid. Some even fainted at the sight of this Holy man. At the end of davening, the Rov asked the ‫ צדיק‬another question. “Why did people faint with fear when they saw you?” The ‫ צדיק‬answered “They got scared when they saw me wearing my Tefillin because I am very careful not to talk while wearing them which is why my Tefillin still have ‫ קדושה‬but it seems that a number of the kehilloh are not so particular about talking while wearing Tefillin and the Rov does not put them right. This is the reason for the plague. If all the kehilloh would take it upon themselves to be stringent in this ‫ מצוה‬then the plague will go away.” The ‫ צדיק‬left the shul and disappeared. Later the Rov gave a shiur about what the ‫ צדיק‬had said and the people did ‫ תשובה‬and the plague went away. Adapted from ‫ ספורים על תרי”ג המצוות‬613 By M. Frenkel

After learning in ‫ ישיבת מיר‬for a number of years as an ‫אברך‬, he began to help ‫ בחורים‬individually and, after moving to Manchester, continued to learn and mentor ‫ בחורים‬who had left ‫ ישיבה‬to work. His warm and approachable style, together with his unshakeable belief in every person’s potential, has had a profound impact on those with whom he has worked. Recently, he graduated from ‫כולל נחלת אליעזר‬, the Rabbinic Training Academy (London) and has now returned to Manchester to found ‫ישיבת בנין אדם‬.

IMPORTANT ADVICE FOR EXPECTANT MOTHERS Following a recent incident in town which led to serious compromise of a baby’s life during birth please review the following guidance which has the backing of local Rabbonim. As a result of COVID-19, homebirth provisions have been cancelled and community midwives are not attending any homebirths at all. We are aware of hesitation towards attending hospital or other health care settings during this time, but your and your baby’s safety takes precedence. The maternity wards have ben conﬁrmed as COVID free. Ensure you are prepared and have the appropriate arrangements in place to make your own way to the hospital you are booked into in a safe and timely manner. Do not allow it to get to a stage where you are relying on Hatzola or the Ambulance Service by which time it may be too late Rachmana Litzlan. As a community, we are very fortunate to have a team of dedicated doulas, working alongside the trained healthcare professionals in hospital, providing much needed support to women during labour. Due to Covid-19, doulas may not always be able to attend hospital so it is imperative to understand that it is against the law for a doula to assume the role of a midwife during childbirth, including assessing, monitoring, or giving advice which they are not trained to do. enti It is entirely unsafe for your doula to present at your home or for you to present at her home to receive any advice or care prior to transferring to hospital; If you have any concerns at all or require immediate advice you should call triage at the hospital you are booked into straight away.
