elcome back to the Progress With Unity Stadium for the first Manchester derby of the season. Much like our recent games against Liverpool, I know how important these fixtures against local rivals are to every United fan. But we also know we’ll need to play with our heads as much as our hearts today as we face Manchester City. It’s been a busy week for us. I’m writing these notes ahead of Wednesday’s cup game at Liverpool. But that’s exactly why squad rotation is so important. As I said to the players before the Charlton game, this is a week in which we’re going to need everyone.

Every player, including the younger ones in the squad, has to be ready. I’ve been really pleased with the work rate and attitude the players have shown, and that was clear to see in the first half at Charlton last Sunday. We dominated play, put together some excellent combinations and created plenty of chances to go 3-1 up after half-an-hour. What we didn’t do, though, was put the game to bed after that, and I want to see us be more ruthless. In a game like today’s we have to make the most of our opportunities when they come. You can feel the difference in the air when a derby comes around. After I arrived in Edinburgh in 2021, I noticed that feeling whenever Hearts faced Hibernian, and I know today is a special fixture for the city I now call home. Enjoy the game.

Match A FOUR-POINT PREVIEW OF TODAY’S DERBY DATE...

Words Mikey Partington

DERBY RETURNS TO LEIGH Welcome back to Leigh for a WSL derby against Manchester City. It’s the first time we’ve said that since the final month of our 2022/23 campaign, having hosted this showpiece fixture at Old Trafford in each of the last three seasons. While it’s always a pleasure watching the Reds in M16, it will be exciting to see bragging rights on the line again here at the Progress With Unity Stadium, in front of what we know will be ardent crowd under the Sunday-night lights. This fixture’s history needs little introduction, but today the Blues from the other side of town become our outright most frequent opponents, this being our 22nd meeting with City since 2018. Our crosstown rivals did the double over us in the league last season, but we’ve had some good memories in previous years – not least a thrilling 2-1 win that secured our first European qualification when the sides last met here in Leigh, in May 2023 – and we’ll be hoping to add to those this evening.

REDS ARE FEELING GOOD

Head coach Eva Olid will get her first taste of the Manchester derby tonight – at least competitively, as you may remember we met the Blues in pre-season, shortly after Eva took charge. Since then, the boss has got into the swing of the WSL and her Reds come into this one with a real good feeling, on the back of three consecutive wins in the division. The international break could have stalled the momentum we were building, but last Sunday’s 3-1 victory away to Charlton was a positive return to action, and we’ll be looking to kick on again after Wednesday’s midweek outing at Liverpool in the Subway Players Cup. The Reds have faced some quality sides already this term, and this is arguably our biggest test yet, against the reigning WSL champions and league leaders heading into this weekend’s fixtures.

ZIGIOTTI BRINGS A GOAL THREAT Speaking of attacking threats, could this latest derby feature another WSL goal for Julia Zigiotti? United’s in-form Swedish midfielder has found the net three times across our last four matches in the division, including bagging the decisive effort as we got the better of Liverpool here earlier this month, on our last Leigh outing. Our no.15’s clinical finishing has been a real positive of the last few weeks, as the Reds have put together a run of healthy results after a challenging start to the campaign. The midfielder is our top scorer in the league this season and her quality shows when looking across the division too – among players to have had seven or more shots in the first six matchweeks, Julia has the most successful shot-conversation rate (42.9 per cent).

4

Hemp, pictured on England duty against Greece earlier this month, has returned to her club in good form

CITY BRING PERFECT RECORD There has been no hangover from a first title since 2016 for Andree Jeglertz’s team, who have become the seventh side in WSL history to win each of their first six outings in a season. The Blues beat Birmingham, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Charlton and Arsenal before the international break and, like United, made a winning return from the hiatus last weekend, by overcoming Brighton on home soil. Three-time Golden Boot winner Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw netted twice and led this term’s top-flight scoring standings coming into the weekend, with seven goals in total, so is undoubtedly a player we’ll have to watch out for. Winger Lauren Hemp, who teed up both of Shaw’s strikes against Brighton, topped the assists chart through six match rounds and is another attacker we’ll likely have to keep an eye on.

Zigiotti tops the scoring charts for United in the WSL so far this term

After this game, the Reds will have faced our cross-city rivals more than any team in our history – Chelsea and Everton are both one meeting behind, on 21. Over half of our defeats (29 of 56 losses, from 252 fixtures played) have come against either Chelsea or City.

There’s always a buoyant atmosphere on the North Stand terrace

NEW BANNER FOR NORTH STANDERS Wherever you’re sat, or stood, for this evening’s Manchester derby, cast your eyes towards the North Stand behind the goal, dgdgdgdg where you’ll see a brilliant new banner on display. Organised by our supporters’ club (MUWSC), the unveiling of the banner is all part of helping the terrace develop its own identity, much like the Stretford End at Old Trafford. (Indeed, some Stretford Enders will become North Standers in a single day this afternoon, by making the 4pm dash from M16 in time for kick-off here!) “The North Stand naturally lends itself to becoming an area where we can really build an

atmosphere – somewhere vibrant, colourful and noisy,” says Marc Henry of MUWSC, who was involved in the creation of the banner, as well as being one of those dedicated Reds attending both the men’s and women’s games today. “We want to create an atmosphere the players can feel on the pitch, while making our stadium feel unmistakably like home.” Alongside ‘passion’ and ‘pride’, the third pillar of the banner (left) is ‘belonging’. Everyone is welcome to join the North Standers, so if you fancy standing with the most vocal Reds for a few songs, you’ll be sure to get a warm welcome from Marc and co.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON OUR NEW HOME...

Manchester United has commenced the next phase of fan engagement for our proposed new 100,000-seater stadium at Old Trafford. Over the past two years, tens of thousands of Reds have shared their views on the future of Old Trafford and the regeneration of the wider area. Your feedback has helped guide our journey so far and confirmed that building a new world-class stadium is what the majority of fans want to see. Now we want to hear more about what matters to you as the stadium design develops. We have launched a survey for you to share your views on the following key aspects of the stadium design: • Creating a world-class football stadium and matchday experience for all fans • Heritage and legacy • Atmosphere • The wider campus • Getting to and from the stadium The survey should take no more than 20 minutes to complete and will close at 12pm (GMT) on Friday 6 November. Simply scan the code here. Thank you for taking the time to share your views.

A LIFELONG RED (JUST THANK HER BROTHER), HERE ELISABETH TERLAND R EFLECTS ON HER JOURNEY TO THE CLUB SHE LOVES, LIFE IN MANCHESTER AND HER DETERMINATION TO WIN SILVERWARE...

This is very much at the heart of the women’s building at our training ground. Having grown up as a United fan, what does it mean to you to come here every day? How does it feel driving in? I think it’s cool. I’m aware that I’m privileged to do this as a job and I want to get better every day and I always have a positive mindset when I drive into work. When you’re surrounded by people here every day and the environment you’re in, it’s something that is really cool and I like to be aware of that and reflect on that as well. So yeah, I enjoy coming into work every day and I’m happy to be here.

We mentioned that you were a United fan growing up. What are your first memories of the club? Yeah, my brother is a huge United fan and that’s why I became a fan really. I just remember from when I was younger, we always stayed up late to watch games, and I would fall asleep on the couch watching United, with my brother and my father. So, it has always been a part of my life, United and football. There’s a great picture of you and your brother in the kits growing up, and after your debut you recreated it at Old Trafford [above]. Have you still got those old shirts, and how proud is he of you? That is actually quite a cool picture I think because I’m quite close with my family and my brother and that was my first official game as a United player, at Old Trafford. I had my family there, I had my brother there. So, it was just a very special moment, and for them to be there as well when it happened was just really cool. And yeah, we still have the shirts! My mother, she likes to collect everything! Nice. Have you got a favourite game, a favourite player from growing up? My favourite player was always [Cristiano] Ronaldo, mostly because of my brother. When I was younger I basically just liked what he liked football-wise until I became a bit older.

MUW 26/27

Teri, we’re here at Carrington, but for any readers wondering exactly where we are at the training ground, can you tell them a little bit about this room and what usually goes on here? Yeah, now we’re in the briefing room where we usually have our morning and afternoon meetings, if that’s something we have. So yeah, we’re in here before every session every day preparing for training and preparing for our games.

Stepping out at The Valley last Sunday, where our Norwegian no.10 made her 67th appearance for the club she loves the most

MUW 26/27

People often speak about the United DNA and ‘the United way’ and what it means to be a United player. What does it mean to you having watched the club throughout your life and now being here? That’s a good question. For me as a player, I want to win. I want to work hard. I want to develop every day, and I want to be surrounded by people and an environment where they want the same. What’s special about it too is the feeling around the club and how the fans are. The fan base is just like... I can’t even explain how it is, but it’s just a different feeling. I think winning with a team like this and building something together where you have that is just something extra special. That’s why I wanted to come here in the first place, because I want to win with this team and this club because of the amazing history and everything. I still have a big ambition to do that. Looking back now on your first two-and-a-bit seasons here, how would you reflect on what you’ve achieved? You’ve been our top scorer in both seasons, you’ve played Champions League football, and you’ve played in two cup finals... It was a good step to take in my career, to come up to a team that wanted to win and compete against the best. It felt like home the day I arrived at the training ground with the girls, with the squad. Since then I’ve had a really good time. We have achieved a lot of

I’ve become more physical at united. I have good control of my body and I like the back-to-goal play good things. I think I’ve developed as a player as well; I’ve had some good seasons, but I always want more. I want more goals, I want to develop as a player and I want to win things. That’s the main thing. You say you’ve developed as a player – what’s made you most proud, or what areas would you say you’ve noticed most in terms of that growth? I’m a striker so it’s important for me to contribute with goals and be efficient around the box, taking my opportunities and helping the team in that way. But I think I’ve become more physical. I have good control of my body. I like the back-to-goal play, to link up and I’ve also developed a bit more speed to run in behind. I just think I’ve become a more complete and overall player, which I think is a good thing.

THE Big Interview Our fans have really enjoyed watching your development. Off the pitch, how much have you enjoyed Manchester and living here? I like Manchester a lot, except the weather [laughs]! I’m from Norway, so it’s kind of the same. But no, I have felt that it’s my home since day one. I love the city, I love the small villages around, and I have a good life here. I’ve lived here for two years, but there’s still a lot that I haven’t done yet that I want to do. So, yeah, I like Manchester a lot. Our team has achieved so much over the last few years, but it’s still very young in its history. When you were growing up, we might not have had a women’s team that was visible, so was it ever a dream of yours to play for United? We [the squad] actually spoke a bit about this the other day because when we were younger, obviously the women’s game was not as professional as it is today. So, most of our role models were male players, male teams and everything. I probably didn’t know that I could play for United and that was never a dream in my head when I was younger because that was not a reality. But today you, as a young footballer, can play for one of the biggest clubs in the world and I think that’s just super cool and

On target against Durham in the Subway Players Cup

it shows how the game is developing. That’s something that is so inspiring for young girls today. That must be a rewarding feeling for you now, knowing that you’re in that position to inspire youngsters – girls and boys – that come to watch the games. Lots of them have your name on the back of their shirt. Is that a surreal feeling? It’s not surreal but sometimes I stop and think about it because for me that’s one of the reasons why you play. You want to win for the fans, you want to inspire other people, you want to be a role model. Or at least that is something that gives me motivation because I think it’s super cool that you can affect people in that way and show that everything is possible. You’ve got a real connection with the fans. Having been a United fan, do you feel like that connection was natural when you first joined the club? I think for me it’s more that I’ve just felt at home since day one and they’ve really taken me in, the fans. And as I said, it’s the people you want to win for, and I want to give everything for them to win with us and achieve good things with us as a team. I think when you want to do that to some people and they want to do that back, I think it’s a good place to be.

Teri’s work on her power and pace has made her a more complete forward, she insists

THE Big Interview

Having helped us beat Liverpool, Elisabeth now wants three points from another big club rival

Showing her love for the fans at our Leigh home

MUW 26/27

Tell us a little bit about playing at Leigh, a home matchday. How does that make you feel playing in front of the fans? I love a home match, I love a matchday in general. It’s just amazing to play in front of the fans. I love football games as well, that’s why I do what I do. It’s great. Looking ahead now, you’re in your third season here at United and we’ve got a new head coach with Eva. Do you think working with her can help you reach those next levels and keep that development going that you’ve spoken about? Yeah, obviously a lot of transition has happened and when you start to get to know people and you start to work with them, I think it opens up a lot of opportunities. The way she has come in and the way she wants to play football, and how she works and how she wants to be 100 per cent dedicated to develop us as a team and us as players, for me that’s inspiring and is something you want to go along with because you want to do the same as a person that

The way eva has come in... for me that’s inspiring and is something you want to go along with wants that. It’s exciting football and I think if we can develop that we can play good football. Just looking ahead to the Manchester City game, what does this derby fixture mean to you? For me, every game is a big game, every game is an opportunity to win and to take new steps. Obviously a derby game feels a bit extra, I’m not going to lie. So hopefully we can get a good result in that game. How big do you think it could be for this team to get a big result in a game like this as well, on the back of the good results we’ve had lately? It will obviously be a good thing for us to see that we’re moving in the right direction. But for us as well, it’s important to take every game step by step. If we get a good performance out of the game, that’s really important too, because then you see you’re working towards the right things. But competing against the best teams and getting results is the best indication to show you that you’re doing that.

THE BIG PICTURE

E Seven days on from a narrow defeat to Chelsea in the 2023 FA Cup final, United returned to Leigh to round off our home campaign with plenty to play for in the league – a title tilt, no less – and a few thousand spare flags following the Wembley trip! So as captain Katie Zelem led the Reds out for a crunch derby date with Manchester City, it was a glorious sight in the late-afternoon Sunday sunshine: a near full house of 7,864 supporters and a sea of red in the stands to welcome the players. You probably remember what happened next: with both teams desperate for the win (City were chasing third place and a Champions League spot), the 1-1 scoreline as the clock ticked into added time was less than ideal for either side. Step forward Lucia Garcia, the Spaniard smashing home United’s 91st-minute winner (inset) to take the WSL title race to the final day. Our home stadium had never heard a roar quite like it, and we’re not sure it has since. Three-and-a-bit years on, have you still got your flag from this legendary occasion in Leigh?

MANCHESTER CITY

Words Jamie Spencer

Niamh Charles smashes home City’s third goal against Brighton last weekend

Manchester City finally got their hands back on the WSL trophy last season, ending a 10-year wait for their second title after agonisingly finishing runners-up in six of the nine years in between. Almost two months into ’26/27, Andree Jeglertz’s charges continue to ride that wave. Last Sunday’s 3-2 win over Brighton marked a sixth straight league win, with City being the only team in the WSL still holding a 100 per cent record. Before that, Birmingham, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Charlton and Arsenal had all tried and failed to stop the Blues, who also top the scoring charts heading into this weekend, having netted 19 – an average of over three per game. Their Champions League campaign has proven trickier thus far – albeit against elite opposition, with City drawing away to Bayern Munich (2-2) and at home to Real Madrid (1-1) after falling behind in both league-phase contests. Once more, Khadija Shaw (right) leads the way with goals – the Jamaican

no.9 has eight in all competitions, seven coming in the WSL as she hunts a fourth Golden Boot. So the stats are impressive, but it hasn’t been a case of blowing away every opponent. An Alex Greenwood free-kick was the difference in the 1-0 win over Charlton, while a 90th-minute own goal finally broke Liverpool’s resistance in a 4-2 victory, having trailed at half-time. Jeglertz sees a “fighting spirit” in the squad and their 4-2 victory over Arsenal was another example of City coming from behind, but the demanding Swede sees room for improvement. Four WSL teams have meaner defences and he called Brighton’s goals “unnecessary” after City raced into an early 3-0 lead. It was, he said, “a reminder to go back to everything we did in the beginning and do everything 100 per cent.” Jeglertz has typically favoured a settled XI, with nine players starting six or more of the club’s eight games. And with no midweek fixture coming into today’s derby, they should arrive in Leigh fresh and rested.

Manager Andree Jeglertz couldn’t have wished for a better first season, having returned to the club scene after two years in charge of Denmark Women. In his early managerial career, he oversaw Umea’s dominance in his homeland of Sweden, with his side reaching the pinnacle of European club football in 2004 as they won the UEFA Women’s Cup (now the Champions League), with Brazil legend Marta the star of the team. Steering City to a domestic Double, having worked exclusively in Nordic countries beforehand, demonstrated the 54-year-old’s ability to transfer his philosophy in impressive fashion. On the field, City’s leader remains Alex Greenwood, the former Red being appointed skipper in 2024 by ex-boss Gareth Taylor. After spending most of 2025/26 at left-back, Jeglertz and Greenwood she has largely bring great experience to their respective roles returned to a central defensive role.

VIV’S SHOW OF SUPPORT Words Matthew Brown

FORMER RED JOINS FOUNDATION FOR EDUCATIONAL EVENT COMBATING RACISM AND DISCRIMINATION Pioneering former United defender Viv Anderson lent his support to Show Racism the Red Card and Manchester United Foundation in a special event at Old Trafford this month. More than 100 pupils from 16 of the Foundation’s partner high schools joined a series of educational workshops, presenting social-action ideas to their peers about tackling racism and discrimination in their communities, while celebrating Show Racism the Red Card’s annual day of action, Wear Red Day.

Coinciding with Black History Month, the young people also had the chance to hear from a diverse panel of Manchester-based professionals, before Anderson handed out prizes to some of the youngsters, who were recognised for their efforts on the day.

Sara (left) and Pippa showed off their rapping skills!

Anderson, who in 1978 became the first black footballer to play for England’s senior men’s team, said: “To see some of the things the children have written down and spoken about has been really good. I’ve been associated with Show Racism the Red Card for many years now, and I’ve seen it grow to what it is today. It’s invaluable what they do.” Most of the young people in attendance had also joined a similar event with Show Racism the Red Card earlier this year, as part of a sustained programme of activity. Sajda, from Levenshulme High School, said: “It’s an honour to present our ideas and learn about everyone else’s projects. It’s amazing to know we’re heading in the right direction to stop racism once and for all.” Her classmate, Hafsa, added: “Even though our school is in a diverse area, racism can still happen, so it’s really important that we can spread awareness and educate people.” Meanwhile, Sara and Pippa from Philips High School were rewarded at the end of the day for their efforts, having presented their ideas in the form of two inspiring raps. Sara said: “I wanted to do a rap as something more interactive. People are willing to listen about reporting racism, and doing something about it. It’s been really exciting being here, and to see the stadium.”

League phase games split into Northern and Southern groups, with all teams ranked in a combined league table. Each team plays six games within their region – three home and three away. Teams will be ranked by points (3 points for a win, 0 points for a loss). If a match is level after 90 minutes, it will be decided by a penalty shoot-out – the shoot-out winner receives two points, while the other team receives one point (PW/L above references penalty shoot-outs won/lost). The top eight teams in the combined league table advance to the knockout phase.

Two Reds are on the brink of half-century league milestones, which we could see them hit today. Keeper Phallon Tullis Joyce’s next WSL appearance will be her 50th league outing for United, while Ella Toone’s next league goal will be her 50th in a league fixture for us (14 of her 49 to date came in the second tier in 2018/19; with 35 coming in the WSL). Indeed, Toone’s goal against Charlton last weekend saw her equal Leah Galton’s club record in the WSL – both have 35 in the top flight for the Reds, ahead of Alessia Russo (22) and Elisabeth Terland (17).
