Local residents have been making Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Cuddle Hearts which have been gratefully received. NICU is an area of the hospital that specialises solely in the treatment of newborns. These hearts are aimed at calming and reassuring babies. Mum or Dad wears the heart against their skin for a short while after which the heart is placed in the cot with their baby. The familiar scent helps babies settle and may also help with breastfeeding. The Cuddle Heart is simply two heart-shaped pieces of material sewn together back-to-back,

without stuffing. The hearts need to be sewn inside out and then turned out, meaning no raw edges and no over locking. NICU Cuddle Hearts coordinator, Lisa Paget was over in Australia last year after her twin nieces born very premature and discovered that in their NICU they use wee fabric hearts for comfort for mums and bubs. “Mum wears one in her bra and bub has one under their wee head, then after 24 hours, they swap them over. This helps mums milk supply, settles bub and helps with bonding. I did some research and found out that we don’t do this in New

Zealand, so I came home and decided that I would try and start the programme here,” Lisa explained. “I started advertising for sewers and fabric and the response has been overwhelming. I’m thrilled to say that I have managed to make this programme a success in the Christchurch NICU, with the help of the CDHB, Selwyn District Council and so many wonderful folk helping me make the hearts. “My dream would be to see this throughout New Zealand, but of course, that will be a huge mission which I am still trying to work out just how to achieve this. It’s not impossible but will take some doing, as there is a lot

involved working behind the scenes with the DHB to make this work. “I would like to thank the Selwyn folks who have been so amazing and have been making the NICU Cuddle Hearts for my amazing project, the response has been overwhelming. “In the next week or so, there will be more packs at your library to make hearts, so you are more than welcome to pop along and pick up a pack of fabric and a pattern and make some hearts for our precious wee ones in our NICU,” Lisa concluded. SUMMER IN SELWYN EVENTS Thousands of residents have been enjoying Summer in Selwyn events around the district. The summer fun events are now halfway through. This year’s packed events calendar has seen a huge range of events from crafts to sports, movies, and a market, with all Summer in Selwyn events still on for now under the Red setting, right up to the end of March. While capacity limits are in place and some further restrictions may apply, the Selwyn District Council has been planning for the possibility of restrictions and at this stage all events are able to continue. Among this year's new events, ninja training was a hit, providing big smiles for the aspiring ninjas. The annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic saw 1,200 children and adults and even more teddies enjoying a fun day out in the sun. Along with pony

rides, face painting, bouncy castles and the annual teddy bear parade children and bears were excited by a visit from Spiderman and a host of Disney princesses. New events to come include social sport taster sessions at the Selwyn Sports Centre, learning archery with the Ellesmere Archery Club, events about our environment with sessions on the migration of Selwyn's bird ﬂocks and native plant propagation, a Star Wars quiz and learning the art of mixing your own mocktails for the adults among others. Other highlights will include the ﬁrst ever Bark in the Park event at the end of February, with two hours of a pawesome day out to celebrate furry friends at Brookside Park in Rolleston, featuring six-legged egg and spoon race, best-dressed dog and more.

Lincoln saw the ﬁrst of ten picnic in the park events, with the expanded list of picnics aiming to bring the community fun around the district with music, entertainment, a free sausage sizzle and more to enjoy in the evening sunshine. The popular ‘A Month of Sundays’ events of live music and fun garden games are back in Lincoln with local music talent performing at the Lincoln Green next to Lincoln Library every Sunday afternoon in February. The season’s pool parties will end with the Pool of Rock party in the main pool at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre on Saturday, February 12th, where local musicians will be performing.

WORM WATCH Worm Watch is a local business providing equine faecal egg counting and parasitology consultancy for horse owners in the Canterbury area. Owner Emily Ensor is a veterinarian and a horse owner, who has recognised that good parasite management is essential for horse owners. Drench resistance is an emerging issue throughout horse populations and this has been confirmed in the short time that Worm Watch has been operating. SELWYN MP UPDATE For those of us still in a summer holiday daze, the news that inflation has hit a thirty year high will be an unwelcome reality check. At 5.9 per cent, inflation is now the highest it has been since 1988 and, with wage growth of only 2.4 percent, New Zealanders are going backwards. First home buyers from around Canterbury, and New Zealand, have in recent years flocked to Selwyn to buy what were once affordable house and land packages but news like this will be a real cause for concern for them. It is largely being driven by huge Government spending, which has been 40 percent higher than under the previous National Government. This year Grant Robertson is planning to raise that to a staggering 68 percent more at $128 billion, with $6 billion in new spending. While elevating spending was appropriate through much of the pandemic, some easing off is now required. National isn’t necessarily calling for no new spending but there needs to be a much greater focus on the quality of it, as well as some form of debt repayment plan. As well as rapidly rising housing costs and fuel costs, you’ll likely notice your grocery bill blowing the budget. The cost of food is impacted by the massively increased cost of production, which is being driven by a terribly tight labour market. This week we have learned of an unbelievable level of

incompetence from the Immigration Minister that will have huge ramifications for food production and supply in New Zealand. On December 12th, Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor announced he had created new border exception classes for 200 mobile plant machinery operators, forty shearers and fifty wool handlers. But, instead of enabling those, Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi, went missing in action. He didn’t sign off on the new immigration instructions that would allow these workers to apply for visas until January 21st, six weeks after the announcement was made by Minister O’Connor. As rural Canterbury will know, these are time-critical workers. They need to be here in February for the grain harvest, but with Kris Faafoi’s lack of action, it simply won’t happen. It turns out that of the one hundred and fifty harvesters who had expressed an interest in working in New Zealand, just forty applicants are still in the mix, with most having just given up and gone to Australia. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that if the 2022 harvest is late or reduced because of a lack of workers, this will directly impact the price of basic food items like flour, bread and potatoes. If ever there was a government that fiddled while Rome burnt, it’s this one.

SELWYN POLICE REPORT Hopefully, everyone has managed to get away for a break over the Christmas and Summer holidays. When travelling through villages, townships and built-up residential areas please observe the respective speed limits through those areas. Police and Highway Patrol units will be enforcing these limits to keep our communities safe. For folks who have not got their winter supply of ﬁrewood organised yet, now is the time to dust the cobwebs off the old chainsaw and get that wood supply organised and dried before the weather starts cooling down again towards the end of March. Ensure that you have the correct protective gear, helmet, face mask, quality built-in

earmuffs, chainsaw safety trousers and steel capped safety boots. A couple of wee tips, at the end of each day, when cleaning your chainsaw, turn the bar over to the opposite side when reﬁtting to get even wear, keep the chain out of the soil and rocks when cutting. With the Omicron variant of Covid-19 in some communities in the North Island and the top of the South Island, it’s probably a prudent time to book in or go to a walk-in vaccination centre such as the one at 101 Orchard Road near the Christchurch Airport and receive your Pﬁzer booster vaccination. The wearing of protective face masks is now more important than ever, along with scanning into all businesses that you

enter. Have a plan organised with your family in case you have to self-isolate at home at some stage in the coming months. Keep in contact with your neighbours and look after each other. The price of fuel at the pump seems to be sneaking up each week at the moment. For farmers especially in our rural communities, please ensure that your farm supply of fuel and fuel bousers are all locked and secured away so as not to be an easy target to thieves and burglars. Security cameras and alarm systems installed on your property are again highly recommended to reduce the chance of being a victim of crime. Selwyn Police.

A chance to make a difference in people’s lives during emergencies is being offered by the Selwyn Response Team. The team, which responds on the front-line to Civil Defence emergencies, is recruiting new members and will be holding an information evening from 7.30pm on Wednesday, February 9th at the Rolleston Council Offices. Team member Robert Love said, “members will talk about how they respond to Civil Defence emergencies such as earthquakes, ﬁres and ﬂoods and what’s involved in being a member.

“There’s a role for people from all walks of life to be doing, we’re not asking for superhero stuff. Everyone brings their own unique skillset and it’s great to have a range of experience. The team is very keen to expand its diversity of responders to reﬂect the local Selwyn community,” Robert added. It is part of the Council's Civil Defence Emergency Management structure and members are trained to a national standard in light urban search and rescue, ﬂood response, storm response, communications and other specialist tasks.

The team responded to ﬂoods in Selwyn and Buller in May and July last year, helping with evacuations, welfare checks and building assessments. It has also responded to the 2019 Nelson ﬁres, the Christchurch mosque shootings and during the 2020 Covid-19 Level 4 Lockdown helping people without places to stay, those living in campgrounds, foodbanks and the wider community. “It’s a great role for helping in the community, challenging yourself and being part of a team that’s pretty driven to provide for the community and learn new skills,” Robert concluded.

Getting smart on when and how we water our gardens through simple habits improves garden growth and means paying less on water rates, which have increased this year from .50c per cubic metre to .60c per cubic metre. Tips for managing your water use: • Check hoses or taps for leaks • Make sure sprinklers are watering the plants not the driveway, footpath or buildings • Use a watering can or hose • Water for shorter periods, for example watering for three ﬁve-minute intervals over a couple of hours lets the soil absorb more water than watering for ﬁfteen minutes continuously which causes

At red on the clock (peak use times) you will likely have lower pressure. At orange on the clock (during the day) watering in the heat of the day or when it's windy results in a lot of water •

A trip to the river is a lot of fun and knowing how to keep your dog safe means you are able to relax and enjoy the adventure even more. Potentially toxic algae can be harmful to dogs (and us). The best thing you can do to keep yourself, your children and your dog safe is to know what potentially toxic algae looks like and avoid it. If you are not sure, keep your dog on a lead at a stony river, and don’t let them in or near the water. Bring water from home for your dog so that they don’t need to drink out of the river. What is potentially toxic algae? Freshwater algae are naturally occurring in rivers and lakes in New Zealand, including waterways with good water quality. Most algae is harmless, if a bit slimy, but one group of algae, known scientiﬁcally as cyanobacteria, can be toxic. In rivers, this potentially toxic algae is called Phormidium. Most of the year it is present at low levels not causing

much danger. But it can be a problem during the summer months, when low rainfall, warm temperatures and more sunlight create an environment where it can thrive. In parts of stony-based rivers it can form extensive mats which can be toxic to humans, dogs, livestock and wildlife. Scientists do not yet understand when and why this algae turns toxic, so to be safe, always treat it as toxic. Dogs are particularly susceptible to poisoning from toxic algae as they love to scavenge and play near water.

What to look for In parts of stony based rivers toxic algae form soft, leathery-looking mats on rocks in the riverbed. These mats range in colour from blackish/brown to dark green (it's quite different from normal harmless green algae, which looks bright green and often forms long strings). These mats can come loose and wash up on the edge of the rivers, or form ‘ﬂoating rafts’ in shallow areas. As they dry out they turn

light brown or white and look like dried leaves or cowpats. They produce a strong musty smell, and this is when it poses the biggest risk to our dogs, as they love the smell and many dogs will try to eat it if they get the chance. Council staff monitor for these mats in parts of rivers where these are known to form, often in shallow areas. Staff are not able to monitor all parts of rivers, so please learn what to look for and alert your regional or unitary council when you see algal mats so they can warn other people.

What if my dog has eaten potentially toxic algae? If you suspect that your dog has eaten toxic algae, you should contact your vet as soon as possible. Signs a dog has been poisoned by toxic algae include lethargy, muscle tremors, fast breathing, twitching, paralysis and convulsions.

ROLLESTON MEN’S SHED Rolleston Men’s Shed has recently ﬁnished two major projects, a tandem axle trailer was completed by the Engineering Workshop and is now up for sale and the Woodwork Workshop has made, delivered and assembled on-site six woodwork benches for Te Rōhutu Whio School, in Rolleston. Another mud kitchen for preschoolers is nearly ﬁnished

and orders can be taken for a range of styles. A kitset wardrobe and a garden shed are being assembled for a Rolleston resident and a noticeboard for a funeral home was made and delivered. The electronics and computing section continues teaching computer skills and servicing electrical items which range from battery chargers to sewing machines. Despite all the work in progress, the morning tea and socialising

is still a major drawcard and reason for the Shed. The Shed has been open as normal since Lockdown ended last year and is operating within the vaccination requirements, so feel free to drop by for a cuppa and a yarn. WEST MELTON BOWLING CLUB Most pre-Christmas competitions were completed with some good results being achieved by West Melton Teams. West Melton 1, ably skipped by Bill Paekau and Mike Lee, won the Centre Men’s 2x4’s Division 2 Competition to earn promotion to Division 1 this year. In the Centre Women’s 5’s Competition the West Melton Women’s team gained third place in their respective division. Unfortunately, due to the weather, the finals of the Malvern Fives Competition which were to be played pre-Christmas will now be played in late January early February. Three West Melton teams have qualified for the finals, West Melton 1 (Premier) West Melton 4 and West Melton 5 (Senior). The Men’s Club Championship Triples Competition was concluded on December 8th. Congratulations to Terry Butland, Roye Daniel and Andy

Weber who were declared the winning team after ﬁnishing with seven wins from eight games. The Men’s Club Championship Fours were played over two days on December 18th and 19th. Congratulations to Roye Daniel, John Waller, Graeme Carr and Mike Lee who completed the championship undefeated. Competitions at the start of this year for West Melton teams

include Centre Men’s 8’s, Men’s Club Pairs, Men’s Club Singles, Women’s Club Triples, Women’s Club Pairs, Women’s Singles and Super Pairs which is played on Saturday afternoons. SHOW YOUR BIG HEART The Heart Foundation is calling for people in Canterbury to show their big hearts by volunteering for its single most important fundraising campaign of the year on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th of February 2022. With last year’s street collection cancelled due to Covid-19, the Heart Foundation is determined to make this year’s campaign the most successful yet, continuing to fundraise for life-saving heart research and other vital support services. “Improvements in management of conditions such as heart failure, heart attacks and heart rhythm disorders are examples of some of the advances we’ve made to improve heart health outcomes for New Zealanders, made possible through generous public donations,” commented Heart Foundation Medical Director Dr Gerry Devlin. “We want to continue these incredible advances and enable our researchers, innovators, doctors and nurses to keep shifting the dial to improve heart health for New Zealanders and their families. “This is why our Big Heart Appeal is so important. Our volunteers around the country

make a huge difference to our ability to raise vital funds and transform the heart health of New Zealanders and save lives. “We have had a good response from people across the country to collect funds for us during the two-day event but we still need more kind-hearted people in Canterbury,” Gerry concluded. Volunteers are being asked to help out for two hours over the two days.
