THE EVOLUTION OF THE FACIAL As I moved forward in my aesthetics (beauty) career I have watched my facials evolve with trend fashion and our growing needs when it comes to time, results and relaxation. Although what I call a ‘traditional facial’ can’t be sniffed at - everyone loves a good deep cleanse, well needed exfoliation and a good dose of float away massage, finished with a healthy dose of hydration! I have noticed a big pull toward ‘results based advanced facials’ and the bulk of my week, to my delight, is spent with clients

talking about their goals and working with some of these advanced treatments. • CIT, otherwise known as micro -needling, is in short, a controlled wound achieved with a pen holding 12-14 needles (in our case). The skin is thrown into a healing process which helps to improve skin tone, especially pigmentation and fine lines, plus encourages collagen and elastin. • Advanced peels - not just Glycolic; there are a number of mixed acid peels, different delivery systems and add-on treatments like ultrasound and derma-planing, to give

that extra boost. Dermabrasion, hydrad er m ab r a s io n, D er m aplaning; these are all quite different forms of exfoliation for different skin needs and like most advanced facials an experienced skin technician needs to be the one to recommend what is the most suitable. Of course all this is for nought if clients are not feeding their skin at home. Find a good professional skin range that suits your skin and use it religiously. Would you exercise once a month and expect a great result? The same applies to skin care ladies!

their training wheels. It all made for a wonderful day to show off new skills and new equipment. The children enthusiastically told teachers about the special features of their bikes and scooters. They had dinosaur bikes, bikes with pedal brakes, bikes with special bells and this was just a few of the interesting features they reported. The children were extremely proud of their bikes and scooters, evident by the huge smiles on their faces! They couldn’t wait to get their helmets on and show everyone how well they could ride without trainer wheels! They demonstrated incredible balance and control when speedily riding their bikes around the playground. With the track full of bikes and scooters, it was inevitable that there were a few near misses! However, the tamariki demonstrated great control of both bodies and bikes

as they slowly eased their brakes on and safely manoeuvred their bikes around each other! The children’s perception of distance and speed was incredible reported a Preschool spokesperson. “They demonstrated their awareness and use of their peripheral vision, and were able to see children coming from all directions.” Also developing on the day was an understanding of road rules and ‘reading’ of the signs that had been positioned around the bike tracks. “Their knowledge of signs showed their understanding of the symbols they see around the community, allowing them to make connections between their Preschool life and the experiences they have in their home life. “A wonderful day was had by all with fortunately no crashes!”

Brian & Rose Walker, owners/operators of Spiderban NC LTD. Well the fly and spider season seems to be a bit earlier this year. The warmer weather has white tail spiders out and about and of course many people are calling us to help them with these unpleasant squatters in their homes. These guys are nocturnal and are normally only seen during the day if they are disturbed; for instance tidying drawers or wardrobes. If you have lived in a house that had whitetails and you have moved houses, you will have more than likely brought them with you to your new home. The treatment we use controls spiders and flies, it doesn't kill them instantly (as anything that potent wouldn't be safe for the occupants of the house) it takes three to four hours to shut down the nervous system

of a whitetail. Sometimes after treatment, home owners are astounded to see a whitetail they never knew they had, on the carpet or out on the wall, unable to move. This is the nervous system shutting down and the spider is unable to get back to cover. Mostly they are just found dead under a couch or behind a wardrobe. The best time to see if you have whitetails is if you get up in the night and look along the edges of the skirting, or along the top of the wall. If you have the old style down lights they can quite often be seen on the ceiling near these, as they have come through from the roof space. If you need a quote or advice please call Spiderban.

The Cancer Society of New Zealand, Canterbury-West Coast Division celebrated the official opening of its new Centre in Selwyn, on Thursday, August 9th. The new Centre in Rolleston is a hub for all of Selwyn, offering a range of support, information and advice to those living with and affected by cancer throughout the area. Elizabeth Chesterman, Chesterman Chief Executive commented, “the Selwyn Centre has been up and running for just over two months now and is already supporting many people in the area living with cancer. Our volunteer led Cancer Support groups are well established throughout Selwyn and the Centre will be an additional resource for them and, most importantly, for many others trying to cope with the disease.” Jackie Claridge, Centre Coordinator has been heartened by the response the new Centre has received. “People are thrilled that the Cancer Society now has a base in Selwyn,” Jackie added. “Schools have been really keen

to work with us and show their support, as have other community organisations. The Selwyn Centre is here for the Selwyn community and we want people to know that they have a place to connect with to get the support they need. “Volunteers are the life-force of our organisation and one of the valuable ways they contribute is through the volunteer driving service which supports people acce ss in g tr ea tm en t in Christchurch.” Jackie continued by saying,

“what we need in Selwyn is more driver volunteers to help meet the transport needs of the people in the district.” The Cancer Society’s major fundraiser Daffodil Day was held on August 31st but people can still donate at any ANZ branch or online at daffodilday.org.nz Funds which assist cancer support services on offer throughout Canterbury and the West Coast. “Please give generously, because with your help there is hope,” Jackie concluded.

Selwyn MP Amy Adams has announced that she is looking for an enthusiastic and civicminded young person to represent Selwyn as the region’s Youth MP for 2019. “Youth Parliament is held once every parliamentary term and is a significant opportunity for young New Zealanders to share their views and the views of their peers with the country’s decision-makers,” Amy said. “I want to hear from young people who are willing to get out and engage with other

young people in their community to gather their views and represent them in Parliament,” Amy said. Applicants need to live in the Selwyn electorate and be 16 18 years of age (inclusive) as at October 19th, 2018. Successful applicants must be available to attend Youth Parliament on July 16th and 17th 2019 and commit to the Youth MP tenure which runs from March 1st to August 21st 2019. Amy will be promoting the

opportunity amongst the local secondary schools in Selwyn and each school will be invited to put forward two candidates. Interested applicants who live in Selwyn but do not attend a local high school should contact Amy Adams’ Selwyn electorate office as soon as possible. Applications close on September 17th. The final selection of the Youth MP will occur during the evening of Thursday, October 4th.

When Brenda Dunlop, was approached to revive the garden competition in Rolleston, which had lapsed a couple of years previously, she rallied a group of interested women to form a committee. Brenda who is now President of the Rolleston Residents’ Garden Competition Committee set to work to restore the event and the first resumed competition took place in February 2017. Getting underway with a SDC donation the active committee sought sponsorship from individuals and businesses to cover prizes and running costs. The support of the community assisted with the success of this first resumed competition and organisers are hopeful the next event will be equally as successful. The competition itself was divided into eight categories and attracted thirty six entries. “This was many more than expected,” Brenda explained, “and I can’t thank the 2017 judges Heather Morton, Morton Tracy Christie, Christie Terry Windall, Windall Jane Ewart and David Drake enough,” she added. Following this 2017 competition

a presentation evening was held, trophies were presented and each winner received a named keepsake to celebrate their success. In the ensuing eighteen months the committee have considered their options and decided that their previous autumn competition would be better staged as a spring one. This year’s event will be judged on October 8th, 9th and 10th, (dependent on entry numbers) with a presentation evening at the end of the month.

Recently Bellyful Selwyn celebrated their third birthday following a whirlwind year with record referrals. Volunteers have been kept busy cooking, delivering meals and fundraising. Bellyful Selwyn announced with sadness that Sarah Dewes, Dewes their first Branch Co-ordinator and founding member for Selwyn will be moving on. Besides taking on the daily

tasks of a Branch Co-ordinator, Sarah has spent many hours quietly behind the scenes assisting with fundraisers, community talks, Cookathons and the odd delivery. Bellyful Selwyn is proud to share that their very own, Rachel Rolton was nominated in the Community Service Section of the 2018 Selwyn Awards. Bellyful is a national organisation that cooks and delivers meals to families with new-born babies, or with young children who are struggling with illness and where there is little, or no, family or social support. There is no charge for Bellyful meals. Meals are cooked usually once a month by a team of volunteers in a Cookathon, then packaged and frozen. Referrals are received from Plunket nurses, midwives, community social workers, family, friends, or the recipient herself or himself. Meals are then delivered by volunteers to those families.

“YOUR LOCAL VETS IN ROLLESTON” Hours: Monday to Friday 8am - 6pm, Saturday 9am - 1pm

Organisers hope this will allow more gardens to be viewed at their best. “We were also conscious of possible water shortages that could make keeping lawns and gardens lush and healthy more difficult, so Spring should overcome this concern,” Brenda commented. “The real aim of this garden competition is that it is an incentive for property occupiers to have pride in being a resident in Rolleston,” Brenda concluded.

All types of gardens will feature in the competition.

Bellyful volunteers fundraise locally to cover the cost of the meal ingredients and packaging, so they are extremely grateful to local businesses and community groups that support them. They do not receive government funding. In 2017, 520 Bellyful volunteers cooked and delivered 19,407 meals to 3,442 families in eighteen communities around New Zealand. They currently have twenty branches, six in the South Island and fourteen in the North Island. Branches work from Bellyful recipes with specific ingredients, and therefore they can only accept some specific food donations. The twenty seven volunteers within the Selwyn branch are locals, wanting to help their own community, and would always welcome other volunteers to join them, or donations to assist them. Our new store in Rolleston has just opened!

Unbeknown to many, there are publicly owned gravel pits dotted all over the Selwyn Dist rict t hat co uld be transformed into habitat supporting wildlife, such as native Skinks. On Saturday morning, August 18th, Te Ara Kākāriki kicked off the 2018 planting season with volunteers planting over 1,200 native seedlings at one such site in Rolleston. Fifty members of the community turned up, including local Scouting groups from Lincoln and Rolleston. With the site being compacted after years of trucks going back and forth with loads of gravel, volunteers were grateful to find planting holes had been drilled in advance by contractors for the event. The seedlings, provided by Selwyn District Council, are planted on one corner of the Reid’s Pit site and will form part of an ecological area. Once the plants are established the public will be able to enjoy a short walkway weaving through the plantings. The entire site covers

Reid’s pit, located on the corner of Weedons Road and Selwyn Road, is named after a local family who farmed the adjoining land. Lincoln University entomologist and Te Ara Kākāriki Trustee, Mike Bowie told the group that many of the other local gravel pit sites also have the potential to be used for native restoration and habitat. Mike surveyed the site in 2016 and although there was minimal native flora he found native skinks were present. Plants

were chosen with the lizards in mind and planted on mounds left behind from the site’s working days. These will provide an ideal habitat for skinks to sunbathe or take cover from predators, when needed. Other seedlings were chosen for their ability to thrive in the site conditions and some were chosen to attract native birds. reported Men’s Shed spokesperson Sandy Ferguson. Ferguson “The Shed will be helping the Centre to build a raised garden plot and there may be other projects in the future where they can give a hand,” he added. “We’re still collecting old car batteries for recycling to assist with our fundraising,” Sandy commented. “These can be dropped off at the Shed.”

Clearview School has been busy participating in ‘Dances for School,’ an in-school dance programme. The year 2 - 6 students had one lesson per day for two weeks, with an instructor who came to the school. During these lessons students learnt how to manage themselves and fully participate as an individual and with a dance partner to learn a number of new dances, a little bit at a time. Each year level had different dances to learn and at the end of the fun filled two weeks, the students presented their new skills to their peers and parents in an engaging, enjoyable performance.

She added, “keep being you, keep going hard and keep making us all so proud. “I’d like to say a massive thanks to all that have, and continue to, support your journey,” Janelle concluded.
