22 year old Rolleston resident Tess Maitland has just completed her second Coast to Coast, held on the weekend of February 10th. Following in the footsteps of her Dad Dave Maitland, Maitland Tess decided, in 2016, to join him in his 24th Coast to Coast after spending years watching him compete. “I have grown up in an environment where competing in the Coast to Coast is a very normal thing. For as long as I can remember every year in February, my Mum, Brother and I have followed my Dad in the event. Watching him for years, I have always been inspired by his efforts and achievements and the dedication involved with a sport like this. So in 2016 we entered a two person team, where I did the mountain run and the last bike into New Brighton,” Tess said. Tess classes herself as ‘a bit of a multisport amateur’ having never, prior to her first Coast to Coast, competed in anything
similar to it. “I had no previous experience in marathons, triathlons or Ironmans,” she added. Tragically during a training run through Goat’s Pass three weeks prior to the 2016 Coast to Coast, Tess’s friend Izzy was drowned after being swept downstream during a river crossing. “Being so close to race day, the four members of our running party decided we would complete the race in memory of our friend, Izzy. Whilst this was understandably very difficult I also now realise that I hadn't processed any of the situation. “It was the biggest mental test I had ever faced. “This year however, was all about finishing and so I signed up for the two day individual, wanting to prove to myself I could do it. After having time to process the seriousness and realness of what happened in 2016, all of my feelings and emotions were heightened. I was no longer able to stand in a
river, be underwater, or even be around water, without feeling uncomfortable - and I still had to learn how to kayak. In doing this there was no way I could avoid the water anymore. This was a true test of overcoming fears and took a lot of time, energy and effort to feel competent. Initially I couldn't even get in the boat as I was so anxious and nervous; memories came flooding back. As a result a lot of my training was focussed around my paddling and thanks to Dad I had a huge amount of support in this discipline. “Without the support I had from my family and friends, particularly my dad and boyfriend Alan, Alan I would not have been able to complete this race. “A race like this, just isn't
possible to do on your own. The early morning starts, car shuttles with kayaks and bikes, support crew on the day, people’s messages of support, and those who came to encourage me along the way. To everyone involved I am incredibly thankful and feel very privileged. “What a fantastic event. Despite the tests, emotions, and difficulties I am so glad I faced my fears and did it. We had fantastic weather, you meet the most amazing people, and are racing in a beautifully breathtaking environment that is in our own backyard. If I can do it anyone can,” Tess concluded!
