Alternative four-piece band, Altero from Lincoln High School, was named this year’s Canterbury winner of Smokefreerockquest at the Isaac Theatre Royal on June 26th, in front of an appreciative crowd of over three hundred. The members of Altero are Miceál Wilson (lead guitar), Jared Whiting (bass), Bede Barrie (drums) and Min Her (lead vocals). Min said the three guys have been together for several years, but that she had only joined the band a few months ago. “It was an interesting experience being able to craft music, despite not being together for long,” she said. “We don’t plan our music that much - I write the lyrics and they are very much related to my life experiences,” she added. Min feels that the band works together well, which may have given them the stand out factor for the judges. Top results were as follows: • Band 1st place: Altero from Lincoln High School • Band 2nd place: Forlorn Bloom from Hagley Community College • Band 3rd place: The Therapy, Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery • Solo/Duo 1st place: Neil MacLeod, St Andrew’s College • Solo/Duo 2nd place: Ashy Batchelor, St Margaret’s College The two top placing bands and solo/duo acts win musical gear from associate sponsors NZ Rockshops, and the opportunity to gain selection for the national final in Auckland on September 11th. Smokefreerockquest Founder and director Glenn Common feels there are more bands than ever before reaching the high standard required from national finalists. “This means that real

Seth Mclenaghan and Sam Dawson construct amazing Lego buildings at the event in Rolleston. The name 'LEGO' is an abbreviation of the two Danish words ‘leg godt’, meaning ‘play well’. The Lego Group was founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Kristiansen and the company has passed from father to son and is now owned by Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, Kristiansen a grandchild of the founder. The humble Lego brick has come a long way over the past almost eighty years - from a small carpenter’s workshop to a modern, global enterprise that is now one of the world’s largest manufacturer of toys. Eternally popular, Lego has twice been named, ‘Toy of the Century’ and it remains a staple in nearly all homes. The brick in its present form was launched in 1958. The interlocking principle with its tubes makes it unique, and offers unlimited building possibilities. It's just a matter of getting the imagination going and letting a wealth of creative ideas emerge through play. This year the Selwyn Parenting
Network were excited to have Rachel de Vries from House of Bricks in Rolleston, running four Lego sessions. At an exceptionally affordable cost of $2 per child these sessions were understandably extremely popular with over 680 children attending. The Lego sessions were run in conjunction with Kidsfest which was created in 1992, to bring child-friendly holiday events and activities to centres throughout Canterbury. The Selwyn Par en ti ng N etwo rk w as delighted to contribute a total of twenty one Kidsfest Events to the four towns in the Selwyn District.
In the Selwyn Parenting Network's tradition of bringing low or no, cost activities to families in the Selwyn District, prices for classes ranged from $2.00 to a maximum of $7.50. Activities on offer by the Group during Kidsfest, included biscuit decorating, chocolate making, candle making, hip hop, princess nails, design a mug, House of Bricks and more. Organisers felt that these events contributed to what was arguably one of the best Kidsfest programmes to date. With a wide range of ages and interests covered, there was, without a doubt, something for everyone.

Understandably the family of Rolleston’s Kieran Kennedy are extremely proud of his achievements which culminated in him being recently recognised as this year’s EEA Young Engineer of the Year. The Electricity Engineers’ Association (EEA) invited companies and individuals to identify and nominate candidates for the Award and Kieran was pleased and honoured to have been the recipient. The Award winner goes on to represent New Zealand at the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Young Professionals Programme, to be held in Belarus in October this year. Kieran was born and raised in Christchurch, before he and his wife moved to Rolleston in September 2011. He studied Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Canterbury from 2004-2007 and graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours. Specialising in power engineering, Kieran is employed by Mitton ElectroNet in
Christchurch. During the last four years he has predominantly worked on projects for Transpower, namely providing designs to upgrade the older 33,000 Volt (known as 33 kV) substations around the country, to newer, safer and more reliable set-ups, which also require less maintenance. Kieran explained, “I manage and lead the site specific lead designers through their designs, ensuring consistency across the board and efficiencies of scale.” The main objective of the EEA award is to recognise young engineers’ (under 35 years old) contributions to the New Zealand Power industry, considering five main aspects: • Engineering Competence. • Communication and leadership skills. • Positive/notable outcomes from performance. • Creativity/Innovation. • Community Service to industry, the profession and/ or society. Nominated by his employer, Kieran was delighted to win the prestigious award. He
commented, “I see it as an honour and a privilege to discuss my experiences from the New Zealand power industry with my peers from around the world. We’re pretty isolated down here in New Zealand so I’m excited to see how others around the world do similar things and learn from one another. I intend to focus on discussing these 33 kV outdoor to indoor conversion projects and in particular the temporary cutover arrangements.” Kieran can see an opportunity for the New Zealand Power industry to benefit from the standardisation of temporary cutover analysis and methods. The prize includes travel to attend the 2015 IEC Young Professionals Programe in Belarus, accommodation, an award plaque and $500 cash. Upon his return to NZ Kieran intends to prepare a paper for the 2016 EEA conference to share his experience and learnings with the rest of the New Zealand Power industry.

Life Member Ralph cutting the birthday cake with Club President Chris Nee. YOU CAN STILL SAVE & HAVE FUN! (Sound advice borrowed from Budget Buster) When people complain about how hard it is to save money, I have to laugh. I used to be one of those people, living pay by pay, borrowing money and coun ng down the hours un l I got paid, so I didn't have to eat twominute noodles. One day, I had had enough. I had nearly $5,000 of debt, a big overdraG on my account and nothing to show for it except a massive wardrobe full of clothes, I never wore. I set aside money for rent, my phone bill ($89 per month), electricity, food, public transport and even Sky. You don't need to live frugally in order to save money. I have $212 in weekly household expenses. On top of that is food at $50 a week - we eat meat maybe three mes per week, get fruit and vegetables from the market and cook the majority of our meals at home. I s ll buy my lunch most days as I always forget to make it. Despite all this, I am able to save nearly three-quarters of my pay every fortnight. It helps when you have goals to save for, whether it's a house or a holiday, it doesn't ma<er. Instead of complaining about how li<le money you make, or that you'll never be able to go overseas, or treat your family; why don't you think about the things that ma<er to you and work towards your goal, like I did.

Pineglades, based in Rolleston, is one of New Zealand’s oldest Naturist clubs, and celebrated its sixtieth birthday on July 12th. The occasion was marked by a series of proceedings, including ‘undressing’ a sculpture and boiling the billy for tea. “It’s a time to reflect, remember and be proud of those early pioneers that established our naturist club,” said Club president Chris Nee. Nee “Their foresight to purchase the land and to spend years clearing and landscaping, was nothing short of extraordinary,” she added. Pineglades, was first established in the early 1950’s, with the Club formed in May 1952. It became one of the founding members of the New Zealand Sunbathing Association in 1957. “Before this date however, members had been getting together as Canterbury Sun and Health club, visiting local secluded beaches, always scared of being discovered by the public. They soon realised that this furtive existence was far from the relaxed nudist lifestyle they were seeking. So in 1955, with just sixteen members, they found some land at Rolleston (then a remote country location) that had recently been razed by fire,” Chris explained.
In 1960, the members purchased 36 historic baches from the Christchurch Sanatorium on Huntsbury Hill, Cashmere, that provide holiday and weekend retreats for members. The baches are one hundred years old this year. Around seventy gathered for the celebrations, enjoying a birthday dinner on Saturday night. On Sunday afternoon a stunning Oamaru stone carving entitled ‘Nude’ was unveiled by the only current Life Member of Pineglades, Ralph Ricalton who is 87 years old. Having been a
member since 1962, Ralph enjoyed an honoured role in the celebrations, unveiling the sculpture and cutting the birthday cake. Then, following the weekly tradition that has stood since July 1955, the billy was boiled on the same spot where the first billy had been boiled so many years before. “In this diamond jubilee year, Pineglades will host the national rally, and we couldn’t ask for a more fitting way to celebrate,” Chris concluded.

Members of Rolleston Men’s Shed are definitely enjoying the luxury of having a completed building to work in, and enjoy a coffee in, rather than out in the open. The extension has arrived onsite in kitset form, so everyone is pitching in to erect it. Once completed it will nearly double the group’s working space. Chairman of Trustees, Neil
Bennett said, “we are a bit like kids with new toys, after having all our equipment stored away for the last eight months.” A very welcome stream of donated equipment, materials and batteries keeps the group moving forward. “We also continue to work within the community at different projects and the boys get great satisfaction in doing these
jobs,” Neil added. “It is a continual process looking for funds to build a space for the engineering shop so if anyone who can assist in any way with funds, materials or advice could contact me, it would be much appreciated” Neil added. The Men’s Shed is a Charitable Trust and has to continually raise funds to keep going. “We have had a burst of new members from all areas of the community, which is great, and we can always accommodate more. Membership is only $20 p.a. so is quite reasonable for the pleasure and company you get back,” Neil concluded. Contact: Neil Bennett Ph: 347347-3173 or 027027-430430-3076

The first-ever holistic and spiritual event in Selwyn certainly went off with a bang. Held in the West Melton Community Centre last weekend, it soon became one of the most talked about places to go. Visitors who braved the morning frosts and afternoon chill found themselves enveloped in the warm and welcoming atmosphere from the moment they stepped through the door. There was a general sense of wonder and exploration from attendees and everyone seemed to leave feeling contented and inspired. For quite a number it was their first time at such an event and therefore were fascinated by some of the modalities offered. Others who had attended similar events commented on the ‘feel’ of it and the high standard of practitioners. While trying new things can often be daunting, people attending Soul Jam seemed willing to give things a go, as well as being appreciative of the benefit they received. The event attracted mostly local practitioners (from Coalgate and Sheffield through to Leeston and Templeton and everywhere in between), and organisers were encouraged that so many wished to participate. There was even a waiting list of practitioners and the hall could have been almost filled again. Each stall was busy, with many busier than they had anticipated. The natural products were extremely popular with soaps and lip balms steadily heading out the door. Enhancing Selwyn District for over 25 years ■ ■ ■ ■ ■
Inspired by the success of the AIMS Games in Tauranga, the Selwyn Sports Trust created Koru Games - a multi-day, multisport tournament for years 7 and 8 children attending South Island schools. Due to be held on September 15th - 17th, this is the second year these successful Games will take place. The inaugural year in 2014 featured five sports, involved twenty nine schools and over a hundred participants. The Games are run by the Selwyn Sports Trust who firmly believe that children benefit hugely from the opportunity to take part in large scale organised sporting events. This year nine sports are offered: Basketball, Football (soccer), Lawn Bowls, Netball, Rugby Sevens, Swimming, Table Tennis, Touch and Volleyball. All sports are
hosted at Selwyn venues, in Prebbleton, Lincoln, Rolleston, Dunsandel and Burnham. Schools will be able to enter teams in each gender category for each sport, the number of teams being dependent on the sport. Each featured sport offers children the opportunity to focus on individual skill development that will prepare them for future sporting development and endeavours. While healthy competition is expected, the ethical base of ‘Fair Play’ is enthusiastically encouraged. Students, teachers, coaches, officials and parents are expected to abide by the ‘Fair Play Promise’ to ensure a positive day for all. Not surprisingly, students are eager to represent their school in this fantastic multi-day tournament. Early entries also
indicate strong support from the schools who took part last year, as well plenty of interest from new schools, including some from as far afield as Southland and Nelson. For further information refer to the website: http://selwynsportstrust.org.nz

LAND LEASE TO BE DISCUSSED Selwyn District Council staff will meet with the Ministry of Education to discuss the potential lease of Council land on the south side of Norman Kirk Drive for use by Rolleston Primary School. Councillors decided at a recent meeting to agree to a request from the Ministry of Education to meet and discuss the lease of the land. Selwyn District Council Chief Executive David Ward said the Council is open to the potential of leasing land to the Ministry, subject to the lease not limiting the future use of the site and a fair rental rate being paid by the Ministry. Other matters for discussion include the size of the area being considered for lease, lease conditions, the term of a lease and the process for returning the land to the Council when the lease expires.

The West Melton branch of Rural Women New Zealand are hosting an evening for all who are interested in learning a little more about how to improve their acreage. The group has booked some extremely diverse speakers ranging from, ‘how to create and maintain pasture’ to ‘free range fowls and better eggs’. There’s a speaker talking about animal welfare and easy care sheep breeds and also about how to protect property and people. There will be time to address questions to each speaker, and over supper another chance for ‘one on one’ questioning. Rural Women have long felt that many people who live on the land, whether it is a section, small holding or even larger farms, would like to learn some of the basics. The free-toattend evening is to be held in the West Melton Hall, everyone is welcome and it’s a great opportunity to not only learn something, but also to meet others who live in the area.

A new anode is far cheaper than a new cylinder!

Today I was in luck, I was able to buy two cartons of Victoria Bitter beer cheap at the local supermarket. I placed the boxes on the back seat and headed home. I stopped at a service station for fuel where a drop-dead gorgeous blonde in a short skirt was filling up her car at the next pump. She glanced over and saw the two boxes of booze, then bent over and leaned in my passenger window, and said in a sexy voice: “I'm a big believer in barter, fella. Would you be interested in trading sex for beer?” Well, I thought for a few seconds and asked:....... .......”What kind of beer 'ya got?”
