A new award at this year’s Courtenay A & P Show was donated by the Malvern Material Girls in memory of the late Sharon Kellock who was a huge part of the Show family. Nine year old Lily Smith won the award by being recognised as the ‘People’s Choice’ in the quilt section at the Show. Lily explained that she wanted to start sewing because the old quilt that her Ma (Grandmother) made her when she was four was now a little babyish, and she was interested in sewing her own, now she was older. It took Lily a couple of days to collect all her material, choosing different shades of her favourite colour, purple. She then added some yellows to help lighten it followed by a week to iron, cut and sew all

the squares. Once she had completed the sewing she took her quilt to Bron Hamilton in Darfield to assist with choosing the backing material. “I had to look through a large folder for a pattern to go on my quilt and chose the ‘Flight of Fancy’ pattern, and purple thread, of course,” Lily explained. Bron showed Lily how to bind her quilt and in the last school holidays Lily and her Ma finished the binding, and sewed on a label. The quilt took Lily eight days to make over a four month period and she’s understandably very proud of the result. “It’s a grown-up queen-size quilt and I am also looking forward to making other things with Ma’s help too,” Lily concluded.

Some of the 150 members of Malvern’s popular Probus Club enjoying their Christmas function at the Darfield Recreation Centre. Malvern’s 150 member Probus Club enjoyed an end-of-year Christmas programme on December 2nd at the Darfield Recreation Centre. The first highlight of the musical programme was from Hororata’s Holly Kimber, Kimber and a particular treat was Peggy Lee’s popular song ‘Fever’! A tasty morning tea provided a chance to mix and mingle, and then came a talented quartet of women gathered from the 120 member Christchurch City Chorus of Sweet Adelines. Their Christmas-themed ‘a cappella’ (unaccompanied

harmony) was lively and wellchosen. Kirwee’s Mabel Knight who has been a member of the Christchurch City Chorus for many years, raised plenty of laughs with a humorous poem about some of the work that goes on ‘behind the scenes’. Finally Probus President Robyn Wendt of Darfield rounded off the cheerful morning with a timely reminder: “The more you weigh, the harder it is for you to be kidnapped! So eat lots of Christmas Cake!” Lorraine Jacobs,

CHRISTMAS FETE 12TH DECEMBER, 10am - 2pm AT THE BOULEVARD VILLAGE (200 DUNNS CROSSING ROAD)

ROLLESTON COME & DO YOUR CHRISTMAS SHOPPING FROM THE VARIETY OF STALLS available! GOLD COIN GATE ENTRY - AS A FUND RAISER FOR SELWYN CENTRAL COMMUNITY CARE

Rolleston’s Boulevard Village is to hold its Christmas Fete at the Village on Dunn’s Crossing Road, with a gold coin entry as fundraising to support Selwyn Central Community Care. “Selwyn Central Community Care do an incredible amount for our community and we felt this was something we could do in return,” said Karen Harris, co-owner and spokesperson for Boulevard Village. “They are a local community support group and cover, Burnham, West Melton, Templeton, Weedons and Roll eston ar ea s. T heir volunteer drivers assist with taking people to medical and various other appointments,” Karen explained. “They also deliver ‘Meals-on-Wheels’ in Rolleston, as well as visiting lonely, vulnerable people and if needed can assist with garden maintenance also,” she added. Selwyn Central Community Care are always looking for drivers to join their team especially those who are willing to drive to both Burwood and Christchurch Hospitals (search Selwyn Central Community Care on-line for full contact details). Organisers of the Boulevard Village Christmas Fete have arranged for a number of stalls to be present and encourage people to head along and make a day of it, as there’s the opportunity of lunch and coffee too! “The Fete will run for four hours,” Karen said, “which should allow plenty of time to wander around the stalls on site. Come and enjoy a facial from the Nutrimetics consultant (small charge of $15 which will

be donated towards the fund raiser); get your honey from Sheehan Apiaries, or meat from Elite Meats,” Karen enthused. “Talk to our spinners and watch a demonstration from them, or purchase a sun hat and accessories, or perhaps wax wraps are required, along with gifts, Christmas decorations, metal wall art, baby clothing, dolls clothes and tote bags, to name but a small selection of what’s on offer.”

It’s also an opportunity to see what the Boulevard Village is all about - it’s Rolleston’s only retirement village - as Karen will ensure that the show villas are open to view. “Visitors to the Fete will also have the opportunity to go into the draw for the Christmas raffle,” she concluded.

See the advertisement in this issue for further details of both Boulevard Village and their Christmas Fete.

On Sunday, November 24th TM Dance World (TMDW) and the Malvern Ballet held their joint annual end of year dance show entitled ‘This is Us’. The Show was held in the beautiful Charles Luney Auditorium at St Margaret's College. An audience of over 460 family and friends came along to support our local, talented dancers. The Show is an exciting fun accumulation of around eight weeks work after students’ annual exams. This year, for the first time, the students from Malvern Ballet and TMDW performed the themed ballet, Peter Pan. Saba PoldermanPolderman-Charles choreographed all the ballet and did a fantastic job bringing the two Studios together for the performance. Students enjoyed playing selected characters from Peter Pan and a huge effort went into costumes and props to bring it all to life! Also showcased throughout the Show were Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary, T ap and Acrobatic items. Many students were involved in several items which made for one very big day, however they all loved their time up on the stage and came away buzzing from the whole experience. At the end of the dancing a presentation of awards was held for the dancers. We would like to congratulate all of the 2019 recipients. Lily Payton took out

the top award for Overall Excellence in Dance. Lily received an unlimited pass to term one classes for 2019. Students are now eagerly awaiting their exam results which will be announced at a presentation day in midDecember.

TM Dance World and the Malvern Ballet would like to thank everyone who came along to support our dancers in the Show! We wish all our dance families and friends happy holidays and a very Merry Xmas! Tara Marshall,

TM Dance World.

Burton More than twenty stallholders were present all showcasing their creative delights,” Ainsley explained, “most of these are hobbies and time-out passions that our locals have made time to pursue. Year 8 students at Darfield High School have been undertaking a unit of study on budgeting and flatting. It involves teamwork and practical mathematics, as well as social studies and financial literacy. Students each brought $5 to contribute to their flat pool of money. They then worked out what to buy to live on and feed their flat within their budget. A trip to the supermarket followed and a large amount of food was collected. Students were surprised to learn about the needs that exist in the community and how much of a struggle it is for some families when unexpected expenses turn up, like car, health, and other bills. In some cases a large percentage of income goes on rent, leaving not much for all other expenses. At the end of the study the Year 8 students decided to donate their collected food to a food bank, and on Friday, November 22nd they presented this in assembly to the Two Rivers Community Trust Foodbank. “This is a most welcome input as there is increased demand for the Foodbank at this time of the year,” said a Foodbank spokesperson. This community Foodbank usually gets most of its food donated from local churches. The way it is distributed though is different to most foodbanks. The co-ordinator will receive a call from a concerned neighbour, minister, relative, or someone else in the know, recommending that a box of food is sent to the one in need. The co-ordinator rings to check that it is wanted and then a box is made up and delivered. There

are no forms to fill in and it bypasses any awkwardness some people feel about asking for help, as it has been asked for by someone else. The food bank has been running this way in a low key manner for nearly seven years. The principle is ‘a neighbour helping a neighbour’. In the last couple of months the foodbank has seen significant growth in the number of parcels going out. “Of course we have to delay

meeting requests when we run out of donated food.” Anybody in the community is encouraged to donate nonperishable food items and deliver to either Trinity Church between 9am and 5pm or the Baptist Church in Greendale Road.

Anyone knowing someone who has a need for this support should go to tworiverscommunitytrust.org.nz for further details.

The mural is made up of ten panels which collectively convey the theme ‘My Malvern Life’. Each panel depicts an aspect of the Malvern area, from wildlife, our rivers, key landmarks, and weather, to extreme sports, creative arts, farming lifestyle, and transport. A central panel marks the September 2010 Greendale earthquake. The

objective was to create art work to brighten the Pool area and to celebrate the many elements of the region we live in. When the Oxford All Stars played at the Springfield Hotel on the afternoon of Sunday, November 17th, it was to an appreciative audience whose request for a return, looks like being realised. The up and coming Oxford based band played some toe tapping enjoyable dance music for both locals and visitors alike. “The audience enjoyed some of their classic music, tapping their feet and even singing along with some songs,” reported band spokesperson Kyle Scott. Scott “A holidaying couple from Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA loved the Group’s rendition of the Eric Clapton hit ‘Tulsa Time’, commenting, ‘this is the best bar we have been in since we left the USA’,” Kyle said. “The Springfield Hotel was a great venue for the Band to play, as it’s friendly, welcoming and is a wonderful spot for a pleasant social outing,” Kyle added.

So many students/families are truly unaware/surprised with how many technical tasks are required to pass their driving test. I have a way of teaching that is simple, but effective in the least amount of time as possible. I have a Duty of Care, from my training and my work ethic, to teach defensive driving and practical tips to help my clients when they are driving solo. My rates are very reasonable.

“I very much enjoy my work, teaching with positivity and encouragement. I look forward to sharing the skills with you to create a safe, empowered and competent driver and to have a laugh along our way,” Michelle concluded with a smile.

KIMBER RURAL FENCING FENCING FOR ALL TYPES OF AGRICULTURAL FENCING 20 years experience 4WD tractor/loader

Deer, Dairy, Vineyards, Subdivisions, Residential.

Glenn Kimber Phone: 027 222 9899 Locals Matt and Tracey Jones who initiated the training facility, along with Agri Training General Manager Greg Barnaby (middle) at Agri Training's Winchmore site. Seventy plus years after beginning its life as a leading agricultural research centre in Mid-Canterbury, the Winchmore Research Station is coming back to life once again in the world of agricultural education. Agri Training is New Zealand’s newest education provider and has partnered with City and Guilds to now have their base at the Winchmore site. Agri Training is offering two Diplomas beginning with a Diploma in Agriculture which leads to a second Diploma in Agricultural Business Management. Agri Training’s General Manager Greg Barnaby said, “it’s great to be able to keep the theme of agriculture and education going on this iconic site. We look forward to the next generation of learning being developed here with some really smart students with bright futures ahead of them.” There are parallels between AgResearch, the original tenant at Winchmore, and Agri Training with an emphasis on education and insights within primary industries. After opening in the 1940’s AgResearch’s original game plan was to provide local research into border dyke irrigation, then in the 1950’s advanced to include long term fertiliser trials. The various trials, research, and innovation based at the Winchmore Research Station led to editorial output that has reached over 500 science related publications. Agri Training’s mantra of ‘Elite Education - A World Class Learning Environment -

Strengthen Primaries’, goes hand in hand with its new home base at Winchmore by offering a programme in partnership with City and Guilds. City and Guilds have been operating for 140 years working with education providers, governments and companies to deliver globally recognised qualifications. Greg goes on to say, “the partnership with City and Guilds means students and employers can be very certain of what they are getting with a qualification, due to the reputation they have for accountability throughout a programme. Agri Training has always had the goal of lifting education in the area of primary industries to a new level here in New Zealand and having City and Guilds as part of that, demonstrates our level of intent. We ultimately want to produce students who are confident and highly capable of becoming community and company leaders. Our programme is such that we are anticipating students who are

focussed on long-term careers in this sector.” Agri Training have designed a programme that allows people who are serious about their studies every opportunity to succeed by combining the classroom with practical training, and delivery with online capability, as well. The programme is fully user pays and will have specialist streams across sheep and beef; deer; dairy production, and arable. A four-week Residential Training Programme is mandatory for all students beginning a diploma, before beginning full studies. These include a farm placement allowing students to earn an income, while learning in a realworld environment. Applications for 2020 scholarships are open now which include the Elite Scholarship and the Future Leaders’ Scholarship.

Darfield Playcentre kicked off the festive season with their annual Christmas Party on Sunday, December 1st. Playcentre tamariki could hardly contain their excitement as the sound of Santa’s bell’s heralded the arrival of the man in the red suit himself, it was reported. After giving him a tour of their

playground, the children all enjoyed meeting Santa catching up for a chat on his knee and even taking a lovely storybook home from the sack of presents. “We shared a delicious pot-luck afternoon tea and it was a wonderful afternoon for Playcentre parents, and even

some grandparents, to catch up with each other as we look forward to our Christmas holidays,” a Playcentre spokesperson recounted. Darfield Playcentre will close for holidays over the festive season, but be back in late January for another great year of ‘Families Learning Together’.

A wonderful day’s outing was enjoyed for our November meeting. Our first stop was the Wilson’s Mill Garden at Ohoka, where we were welcomed and shown around the beautiful home and garden. The extensive sixteen acre garden was magnificent with its beautiful tree lined vista, a lake filled with waterlilies, a secret garden of roses, paeonies and delphiniums, a courtyard garden, specimen trees and a stream adding to the beauty of it. We were also treated to taking a peek into Kelvin’s world of vintage cars and workshop. This was truly a man’s shed of huge proportion. Lunch was enjoyed on the lawn overlooking the lake. Our next stop was the herb Garden at Tuahiwi, here we saw, tasted and enjoyed the many herbs and learned of their medicinal use. The herbal teas and elderflower syrup and pestos were an added treat enjoyed by all. A great day out. Lee Stokes.

Along with visits to communities, the Edge Connector is available to run tailored programmes for schools and preschools, which are reported to be proving very popular. Maria said any school or preschool interested can register their interest by emailing. The Edge Connector will be visiting Windwhistle in early December, based in the School’s car park. They will also visit Castle Hill and Arthur’s Pass in mid December.

Constable Rick from the Rolleston Police has recently trained up a team of sixteen new recruits from Darfield Primary School. They will be responsible for getting the students at Darfield Primary School safely to and from school. The training involved a two hour classroom session and a further time out on the crossing so that the patrollers are well prepared for their new duties. “It is a huge responsibility and one which the teachers and students take very

seriously given that our crossing is on such a busy state highway,” commented the teacher in charge of the road safety team Lynley Cooper. Cooper “Next year we will be operating a full patrol after school too, because the roads are so much busier,” she added. The patrol operates from 8:30 - 8:45am in the morning and again from 3:10 - 3:15pm after school each day. “We really appreciate the drivers who are alert and ready to stop when the signs are out, as well as the

pedestrians who also respect the patrollers by waiting patiently for them to do their job. We also thank the parents and caregivers who remind their children to be wearing their Fluro vests every day. This is a very simple and visual sign to other road users to be aware that there are young children sharing the road with them,” she explained. “Roll on 2020 and the new school year!,” she concluded with a smile.

The Malvern Rifle Club hosted the Canterbury Spring Championship Meeting on November 16th and 17th at the Malvern Rifle Range. Shooting was conducted in four classes A and B Grade Target Rifle, FTR and F Open. On the Saturday the longer ranges - 800 and 900 yards were shot. A strong variable gusty NW wind greeted shooters. The scores reflected how difficult the wind really was. Some TR shooters reported having over fifteen minutes of

wind adjustment! To add more spice to the day while shooting the 900 yard ranges some light rain fell as well, without reducing the variability of the wind. The long range aggregate winners were TR-A Andre du Toit, Toit TR-B Daniel Alexander, Alexander FTR Mark Alexander, Alexander F-Open Mike Chui. Chui Gentler winds greeted the shooters on Sunday morning with the 500 yard scores reflecting this. The wind was still hard to read at the 600 yard

range. Winners of the short range aggregates were TR-A Chris Kershaw, Kershaw TR-B Daniel Alexander, Alexander FTR Murray Cooke, Cooke F-Open Les Grimsey. Grimsey Overall winners were: TR-A André du Toit, TR-B Daniel Alexander, FTR Mark Alexander, F-Open. Mike Chui. Daniel Alexander in TR-B finished with the second highest overall target rifle score - a great result for his weekend. Mark Alexander, Malvern Rifle Club.

www.curlecontracting.co.nz On December 1st seven women from Malvern Bowling Clubs travelled to Timaru for the Southern Bowling Quad Tournament and played against Town, South Canterbury and North Otago. The women from the Malvern area, plus two from Ellesmere and one from Mid Canterbury made up the under 5’s Country Team playing singles, pairs, triples and 4’s. Country come out on top winning ten out of their twelve games. Two of the games; the triples and 4’s had a number of Canterbury players in them, so Country was really thrilled to win over the triples skipped by Debbie Creelman of Coalgate

Recently New Zealand Ladies Golf held their annual Coronation Medal, Aotearoa Cup and Veterans’ Trophy Competition for 2019. Isy McLaughlin of the Hororata Golf Club was the winner in the Canterbury Veterans’ competition and winner in the Canterbury Aotearoa Competition. She went on and won this year’s National New Zealand Veterans’ Trophy and got second in the New Zealand Aotearoa Cup. Isy was presented with her awards and sponsor prizes at a recent Canterbury Golf Day.

Barbara Thompson of Oxford with Maggie Taylor of Diamond Harbour, winning all their pairs games. In all Malvern Bowls can be very proud of what was achieved in Timaru, as this year it was cut down to five year players only, apart from North Otago and South Canterbury who had to go up to ten years, so they could field teams. We look forward to next year. Heather Patterson, Selector/Manager.

Despite a cloudy, overcast day organisers explained that the Glenroy Community Christmas get together and Craft Fair, held on December 1st, went off really well and a good time was had by all. “Around sixty people, together with nearly twenty children, enjoyed a Glenroy Hall full of beautiful stalls displaying works from some of our very talented crafts people,” organisers reported. “This included art work, Christmas cards and gifts, soaps, jewellery, buffalo cheeses, plants and cut flowers, to mention but a few of the attractions.” The cake auction, which was fundraising for the Hall, saw entries entertainingly compared and caused much hilarity. The sausage sizzle was a great attraction together with the table of savouries and cakes enjoyed by many for lunch. Six magnificent classic cars parked up in the gardens provided many a conversation starter and ensuing discussion. “Many thanks to all who made the day possible and to all those that attended, it was lovely to see everyone. Christmas good wishes from the Glenroy Hall Committee.”

Six magnificent classic cars lined up at the Glenroy Hall attracted a steady stream of viewers.

CHRISTMAS AGAIN - WHAT AM I GOING TO GET HIM/HER? Well there is lots of choice compuIng wise. Maybe a laptop so everything is portable and handy for travel, as is a tablet, if they are not doing that much in the way of photos, prinIng, typing, file transfer. Maybe a desktop with a big screen to play games on? A big screen TV to hook up the computer, or cast the tablet to. Whatever you do, shop around, and I suggest go for the market leader, and name, brands. Consumer is a good one to find out what is best and do ask at the Ime of purchase; where they are serviced. If they can’t tell you find someone who can! Who wants to have to send it to Auckland (at your expense) because it’s not a common brand? Yes they will send it back to you and pay the postage, but who wants to get a secure box with bubble wrap, pay $30.00 plus to send it, before waiIng two weeks to get it back? Whatever you get, take the Ime to set it up properly. Read the instrucIons, if any come with it, and do what they say. Lastly get the ba'eries… make sure you know what size is needed. No one will be open on Christmas day, and if they are - what price are they going to be, if in fact they have them? On a personal note have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Enjoy the Ime off - I know I will!
