The Grand Prior Award is the ultimate Award for St John Cadets to obtain. The Award is revised every year and is described as one of the best educational youth programmes in New Zealand. The main curriculum of the cadet programme is the Grand Prior’s Award where cadets set goals and achieve in a variety of areas. To be eligible for selection Cadets need to choose their badges from the 27 subjects available, six of which are compulsory, while six more can be individually chosen; plus one hundred hours of community service. The Darfield Youth Division of St John saw two of its Cadets awarded with this honour on November 1st. As the highest award, other than for bravery, St John can bestow on its Cadets, recipients have the option to travel to Government House, or in the case of the Darfield Cadets they attended a ceremony at the Piano in Christchurch where the Grand Prior badge and parchment was presented. Darfield’s two recipients are: Andrew Whear who joined St John Youth in 2011 and commented that it opened a new chapter in his life. During his time in the Youth Programme and now having completed his Grand Prior’s Award Andrew added that he had faced new challenges and discovered knowledge and camaraderie not experienced before. Completing the Grand Prior requirements came with its own challenges such as completing work for badges while maintaining rank and teaching within his first division. Andrew attended a number of badge camps which not only allowed him to discover new ways to live his life, but also to develop lifelong friendships. Completion of First Aid qualifications has led Andrew to consider a future role as a Recruit Ambulance Officer. “I will continue as a Youth Leader and

Samuel Ireland commented that completing his Grand Prior Award had been an exciting and rewarding experience. He felt that being part of the St John Youth Programme had made him more confident and provided much friendship. He added that he’d enjoyed gaining each of the badges toward the Award but that his favourites had been drill and communication. He was appreciative of his promotion to Corporal and Sergeant and said he looked forward to what the future would bring.

Firstly, congratulations to all our brothers and sisters in the community from the Continent of Africa, South Africa and Zimbabwe (represented by the Beast, Springbok prop: Tendai Mtawarira) in handsomely winning the Rugby World Cup against England in the final on Saturday night. England gave the All Blacks a rugby lesson the previous weekend, but one week later our old rugby foe the Springboks themselves gave England a comprehensive lesson in guts, determination and scrummaging. As for the All Blacks, the loss against England won’t do them any harm, they will have learnt from the experience and the

Senior Constable Beaumont is now into his third week based at Rolleston Police Station working in the Selwyn District Family Intervention Team. Both Hamish and I wish Tony all the best in his new role and thank him for his work over the past fourteen years for the Darfield Community and wider Selwyn District. Tony will be sorely missed by many in the community. Over recent weeks three males under the age of 25 years have been processed locally for drink driving. This is a very vulnerable age group of drivers in New Zealand who have a high incidence of crashes statistically. The message is if you are out drinking alcohol over the summer to make good use of licensed premises’ courtesy vans and/or sober drivers. If you are convicted of drink driving in the courts, and over the adult level for court (400 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath), you can expect a handsome monetary fine and look forward to spending the next six months getting around on Shanks’ Pony, or the Buller Express! Rural Canterbury is continuing to get targeted by burglars. Particularly in recent years we have been hit hard by criminals from the City stealing vehicles, putting on false plates and travelling into outlaying rural areas committing burglaries. The stolen items are on-sold generally to finance their P (methamphetamine) addictions, which can run into thousands of dollars per week. Darfield Police have had some great results in apprehending some of these burglars and recovering stolen property, but it continues to be an ongoing battle. Again the message is to our community to take personal responsibility for securing your property and possessions. Here follows some tips: • Always keep vehicles (four wheel drives in particular) locked up in a garage when not in use. • Never leave your vehicle

parked out on the roadside overnight, if you can avoid it. • Always lock your vehicle when unattended. • Always remove the key from the ignition of your vehicle when not in use, or parked. • Always shut your house windows, and lock your house doors, when absent from the house. • When absent from the home, or on holiday, shut and lock the gate to your driveway. • Have a neighbour or trusted person regularly check your property when absent for a length of time, even better have someone you trust housesit your home. • Install sensor activated spot lights on the corners/sides of your home. • Install CCTV security cameras. • Install an alarm system in your home and buildings on your section. • Consider setting up a trail cam on your driveway, around your home and outlaying farm sheds and buildings. • Farmers in particular are advised to consult with a security company and implement security cameras and alarm systems on their rural properties. • For people who own open bay sheds, a laser beam alarm system can be installed running across the front of the shed, once the beam is broken the audible alarm will scream out loudly. • As mentioned in recent weeks, poaching on rural farmland and spotlighting from public roads in our district will not be tolerated. Police locally will be patrolling outlaying rural and isolated areas in the early hours specifically targeting burglars, poachers and spot lighters. • For hunters caught poaching you can expect a fine of up to $100,000 if convicted in court, plus destruction of your seized firearm and the likelihood of having your firearms licence revoked.

Highland Games originated in Scotland centuries ago, most likely as a much more serious type of competition designed to find the best warriors, couriers, clan bodyguards and so on. It's also likely that contests for pipers, dancers and entertainers were involved, to round out the official clan 'staff'. Looking back into the history of Highland Games can give an interesting insight into the spectacular sports and arts on display at Hororata Highland Games set for Saturday, November 9th, 2019. The Tossing of the Caber (from the Gaelic for pole) is a truly Scottish sport which has been practised since the very early Highland Games in the sixteenth century. Contrary to general opinion, ‘caber tossers’ do not try to throw the caber as far as they can, but to toss it so that it turns end over end and lands in the ‘12 o’clock’ position. The Hororata Highland Games has a field of international strongmen and women competing in eight Scottish athletic disciplines for three different Championships. Perhaps nothing captures the spirit of Scottish culture better than the sight of Highland Dancing being performed. The Hororata Highland Games hosts

New Zealand’s biggest one day Highland Dancing competition. Whilst the majority of dancers now entered into these competitions are female, the roots of these ritualistic dances lies with warriors imitating epic deeds from Scottish folklore. The discipline required to perform these Highland dances allowed men to demonstrate their strength, stamina and agility. All of this athleticism is required for modern Highland Dancing competitors, male and female, making Highland Dancing a demanding sport. The stirring sound of the bagpipes is one which rouses emotion for many people and are a crowd favorite at the Games. For the Great Highland bagpipe, the chanter is never silent, so there can be no rest between notes and its volume cannot be changed. Following the 1745 Jacobite rebellion, overt signs of highland culture were driven underground, which may have resulted in the suppression of the instrument, although no law explicitly banned it. Following this clampdown, a piper fell afoul of the authorities as, “no highland regiment ever marched without a piper” and that therefore in

the eyes of the law, his bagpipe was an instrument of war. Visitors to the Hororata Highland Games are assured of a wonderful family day out, organisers report. Not only is it a rich cultural festival with stalls, food and unique entertainment, but also gives people the chance to get off the bleachers and have a go. Young and old can test their skills at traditional Scottish sports like tossing a caber, playing the bagpipes, hurling a haggis, taking a fling with the Scottish Country Dancers or the Kilted Mile.

Deans “There was lots of foot traffic throughout the morning which was encouraging, but as the temperatures got hotter numbers dwindled,” she said. Early tallies show that approximately $2,700 has been raised from the event, which is around $600 up on last year. Added to this will also be the money raised by the Cancer Support Group through their Devonshire Teas and the Sausage Sizzle. “All in all a good result for the Malvern Cancer Support Group.” Pip said. Thirty two stall holders braved the warm day and presented a wide variety of goods for those attending. Numerous community groups supported the event and held stalls; the Red Cross with

their Cake Stall, Save the Children Fund, Rural Women took care of the barbecue and of course the Malvern Cancer Support Group catered for Devonshire Teas and ran the Raffle. Raffle prizes were all donated for which organisers were extremely grateful. Children’s Activities included face painting and balloon twisting by Virginie from Lolytwist who is a local children’s entertainer. There was also cupcake decorating, along with the vintage Fire Engine and car rides. Organisers, Carolyne Jones, Jones Pam Duncan and Pip thank all the volunteers and stall holders who gave up their time, as well as those who attended on the day - all of whom made the event such a success, for such a good cause (the Malvern Cancer Support Group).

Hororata Primary School held their Spring Festival / Pets’ Day on Friday, November 1st. The day was full of fun and excitement for the children and is the highlight of the year for many. The day began with the Green Fingers Programme which will run until the end of this term. Green Fingers splits the students into five groups exploring eight different modules to help them understand all the different parts of their garden ecosystem. They learn what gardens need to thrive, as well as how to plant, propagate and preserve. ‘Seeds’ were the topic covered in the first of the eight sessions. Next the Hororata children were very lucky to have beekeepers from Kirwee Bees come along to speak with them. The PTA held a much enjoyed sausage sizzle before the interhouse competitions got underway. The afternoon heralded the arrival of the Pets’ Day judges, Pip and George Deans (lambs), Gaye Kerr (ponies and cakes), Jenni Carter (dogs), Jenny Gallagher and Bob Mugford (sculptures, feline, miscellaneous and avian), while Stuart Oliver visited properties to judge the calves. Needless to say the children thoroughly enjoyed displaying their animals to the judges and talking about how they care for them. The allimportant cake auction then took place with principal Marty Gameson displaying his auctioneering talents.. The auction raised an amazing total

of $1,300, with the highest bid reaching $170. The cake section was won by the Loos Family with their rooster cake (before this fetched $150 at auction). Indi

Two Rivers Community Trust’s Light Party has become a popular way of spending Halloween for many young people in Darfield. Last Thursday’s roller disco (held in the Darfield Primary School’s Hall) was the third of these events, providing a free, funpacked alternative for those that aren’t really into trick or treating. 2019 COURTENAY A & P ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT This year’s Courtenay A & P Association President, Wendy Chamberlain (nee Jenkins) Jenkins has a long and proud history with the Show. Wendy grew up in the area, the daughter of Harley and Peggie Jenkins and is married to Brent Chamberlain who also grew up locally. The couple have three adult children Renee, Renee Matt and Julia. Julia Renee, who is married to Jeremiah McLennan is the mother of Wendy and Brent’s two grandchildren George (aged three) and Ella (seven months). “Like my parents I have missed very few Shows,” Wendy explained. “I also annually attend the Malvern Show at Sheffield and the New Zealand Agricultural Show in Christchurch.

I have long been committed to the Courtenay A & P Association - joined the committee 28 years ago, and began entering exhibits in the produce shed. “My main role at the Show over the years has been through my involvement in the Produce Shed; looking after Photography, Eggs and Jams. I have on occasion also entered flowers and cooking. The Produce Shed really is a sight to behold with its ten sections,” Wendy enthused. “My children (now grown-up) always competed in the popular pet lamb classes when they were younger and also helped my sister Jane Jenkins with her Angus cattle. Jane was Show President last year, so I shared two years as a VP with her,” Wendy recalled. “One of my fondest memories was of the 1975 Show. It was the centennial Show and was truly a great day for all involved. Many local men grew beards for the competition that was held in conjunction with the event and there was even more vintage machinery and vehicles present, than usual. “Maintaining this local tradition of 144 years of Courtenay

SHOW PRESIDENT When not involved with A & P Show requirements 2019 Courtenay A & P Show president, Wendy Chamberlain is employed as a registered nurse. She qualified in 1983 at Christchurch Hospital and still works there part-time; currently in day surgery. Additionally Wendy has been a Malvern District Nursing reliever for around thirty years and from 1994-2010 also undertook casual shifts at Darfield Hospital. Wendy has many home interests including gardening (she and husband Brent live on a ten acre farmlet with one acre of garden which is resplendent

with more than one hundred rhododendrons and a hundred roses), plus cooking and preserving. During these meetings jobs are delegated, and there are many, many voluntary hours put in prior, along with working bees etc throughout the year to ensure the grounds are maintained and ready for Show day,” she commented. “Once Show day is here, everyone has worked together and done what is required, so all the jobs are completed. So by the time the big Day arrives the role of President, Vice President and Junior Vice President and their partners is, as always, as hosts and diplomats for the event. We walk around the entire Show grounds, but do follow a timetable to ensure we’re where we’re meant to be, when we’re meant

to be there. We host an afternoon tea and lead the Grand Parade, walking in front of the Ellesmere Pipe Band. Following the Parade, we welcome everyone, give our speech and present awards. The Show committee are always busy on Show day taking care of the numerous sections and ensuring everything runs smoothly. When you’re a Vice President, is probably the first time you really realise just what all the roles entail and how everyone has a huge part to play to present a well-run event such as this,” Wendy said. “Courtenay A & P Association also co-host three competitions during the year with Malvern A & P; the winter feed, two tooth ewe and heifer competitions. “I have chosen ‘Courtenay’s Fruits of Labour’ as this year’s theme,” Wendy explained. “Everyone who brings entries to the Show brings their very, very best. So I felt that this theme really summarised what our Show is all about. Our

community is a producer; new businesses are starting every year. Businesses like Roan Milk from Darfield, and sheep milking at Jo Catherwood’s Catherwood etc. The Kirwee/Malvern areas are known for their production of a wide variety of food - beef, lamb, venison, dairy (milk, cheese), cropping, vegetables, wine, flowers and much more; feeding the local community and beyond,” Wendy concluded.

The Courtenay show is always a great day out for the whole family. It’s a day of celebration and includes many activities and displays for all ages, including livestock and horse jumping, steam powered engines and floral displays. There are rides for the kids and the usual food treats from mobile vendors. President Wendy Chamberlain and the committee have done a wonderful job in pulling together the varied components that make the Show a success. The Show is a good reminder of the prosperity of our rural industries. Selwyn is fortunate to have had a very long track record of producing great food for the world and designing and employing new technologies in its production. Lincoln University offers a world class education in the use of soil and if attending the Show gets you interested in learning something new for 2020 be sure to check out their prospectus. WHO DOES WHAT? ‘Who does what?’ is explained by Show Secretary Anna Seaton: Seaton “Our President this year is Wendy Chamberlain. Chamberlain Vice President is Richard Westaway and Junior Vice President is Jenny Gallagher. Gallagher “We have a new horse convener this year as Jocelyn Thrower has taken over the job from Dave McConchie. McConchie Warwick Seaton is our sheep convener, Sam Bryan - cattle convenor, Graeme Marshall - grain and seed and Graeme Bell in poultry. David Stott is our produce shed convenor and Peter Schnell takes care of the trade space, while Stuart Begg is the grounds -man. Each convenor has a small team of committee members behind them to support them and help organise their section. “As Secretary I will be spending the day in the office alongside assistant Secretary Rob Kellock and our other experienced team members, some of whom have been doing this for many years. It will be our job to enter the

results, plus organise the prizes and trophies. We also deal with the public and answer any questions they may have. It’s the first Show day for both of us as Secretaries so fingers crossed for a beautiful day and no dramas!” Anna said with a laugh.

DARFIELD PRESCHOOL PROVIDING FOR FAMILIES Darfield Preschool and Nursery will have their child friendly tent available, as usual, at this year’s Courtenay A & P Show, in Kirwee. Families are encouraged to bring their children along and experience some interactive fun activities, or even just a place to rest from the crowds. The Preschool’s space is provided for any families needing nappy changing facilities, a place to feed their little ones, or simply to come and have a look at what the Darfield Community Preschool and Nursery have been up to. There will be sunscreen provided for anyone who’s forgotten

and they’re happy for folk to help themselves. Friendly Preschool staff and parents would love to have a chat to showgoers and welcome them to the site. “Our tamariki have been expressing their reinga/feelings in numerous ways recently and to reflect their learning they have been working on a display for the Show,” explained Samm Dalley, Dalley Preschool Lead Teacher. “To foster the children’s learning, many experiences are offered to make their discoveries visible. With tamariki transitioning to primary school, as well as from the Nursery to the Preschool it has been

interesting to see their contributions to this project.” Samm added. “Do come and visit us at our tent so you can learn more about the enriching, learning environment we offer at Darfield Preschool and Nursery. Then pop along to the marquee to see how our tamariki have incorporated their reinga/ feelings into their display. “We all wish you a wonderful visit to the Show and be sure to buy one of our raffle tickets; prizes to be won and a wonderful fundraising opportunity for the Preschool,” Samm concluded.

SHOW SECRETARY BACKGROUND Courtenay A & P Show Secretary Anna Seaton, Seaton has been living in Kirwee for fourteen years prior to taking up the role. Along with husband Ashley, Ashley the couple have three children, Georgia (7), Fergus (4) and Jack (2). The family live on a sheep and crop farm. “For the last seven years I have been a stay-athome Mum,” Anna explained. “In the role of secretary I have had a lot of support from Ashley and the rest of the committee for which I am very grateful. I do most of the work in the evenings so it fits in well with mum life.” Ashley has been involved with the Courtenay A & P Show since he left school and was President in 2017. His father and grandfather were also on the committee and his brother is the sheep convenor. So it’s a family affair! “It has made stepping into the role of secretary a lot easier for me. I’ve had the opportunity of viewing the Show now from a number of aspects and now I get the challenge of being Secretary,” Anna ended.

SHOW SECRETARY ROLE Taking on the Show Secretary’s position is Anna Seaton. “I started as secretary for the Courtenay A & P Association in April of this year,” Anna explained. “I took over from the late Sharon Kellock, Kellock who sadly passed away after a short illness in February. I am fortunate to be working with Rob Kellock, Kellock Sharon’s husband, who has taken on the role of assistant secretary. Rob is in charge of writing the schedule and show guide, taking entries and all the database work. My job is to be the main contact for the day-to-day business,” Anna said. “I liaise with sponsors, judges and marshals, trade and food site holders, etc. I take the

meeting minutes and do the advertising. There certainly is a lot that goes on behind the scenes of running an A & P Show,” she laughed. “The Courtenay A & P Show is a wonderful community Show that brings town and country together,” Anna said. “It’s a great social event. It’s not only about farmers getting to see what is new in the way of farm machinery and ideas on sustainable farming methods, but also builds a bridge of understanding between the two lifestyles. Kids get the opportunity to be hands-on with different animals and show animals that they have reared themselves. With plenty of craft stalls and friendly competition between entrants in the produce shed

there is something for everyone to see and do,” she added. “There are about forty people on the Courtenay A & P committee and they all volunteer their time to run this Show,” Anna reported. “We have monthly meetings throughout the year and several working bees to get the grounds ready for Show day. If it weren’t for these amazing people and all their efforts there would not be a Show at all! As we are a nonprofit organisation we rely on sponsors for all the prize money, and on Show day we rely on volunteers again to marshal and judge each section. “There really is a lot that goes on behind the scenes,” Anna concluded.

KIRWEE AUTO - 40 YEARS When Stuart (Stu) and Edwina Jones purchased the Kirwee Automotive Service business on November 1st, 1979 interest rates were up around 18 to 22%! Initially the Garage provided Caltex Fuel with a margin of four cents per litre. Long hours of operation were required to make the business profitable; hard work with a young family (Vanessa Vanessa and Blair) Blair and another child on the way (Hamish Hamish). Hamish “In the early 1990’s the local store next to the Garage closed for good,” Stu explained, “so we became the local seven day dairy and Post Office - which now has over 400 box holders.” By the late 1990’s fuel companies started sending out vibes that they considered small fuel stations to be uneconomical to supply and would stop delivering to them in the near future. “Small fuel station owners from throughout the South Island got together, and with Fletchers as a supplier, Challenge was formed,” Stu said. In November 1999 Kirwee were the third only site to change and to operate under the Challenge banner. “Twenty years later we are still going strong,” Stu added. North Island service stations only joined the Challenge group in later years. The Kirwee Garage is well known for its support of local Clubs/ Schools and have done so for forty years. “We believe in supporting the community,” Stu commented, “and for forty years we have assisted wherever we can in the form of prizes or sponsorship.

At this year’s Show there’s a change of convenors in the horse section with Jocelyn Thrower taking the reins (pardon the pun!). This is Jocelyn’s first time in this position and she admits to having much to learn about the role. She hasn’t been completely thrown in at the deep end though having joined the committee on her return to Kirwee, around four years ago and gradually taken on more responsibility. Jocelyn grew up just down the road from the Courtenay A & P Showgrounds and has always considered it her local Show, even when she lived elsewhere. As a child she remembers entering ponies, sand saucers and mini cactus gardens. Even when living in the city Jocelyn still returned to compete in Horse Sections, or enter Produce Shed classes. Prior to the Show Jocelyn, with the help of the horse section committee, make sure they have organised and secured the judges and stewards required for each ring, make any amendments to the schedule if required and help

•

answer any questions that the secretary gets in relation to any horse entries. Jocelyn also needs to attend Royal Agricultural Society meetings to keep up to date with any rules or policy changes that may affect this Show. The horse section at the Show normally attracts around 260 320 entrants. Facebook is used as a tool for equestrian contestants as many use the ‘Up-coming Horse Events In The Canterbury Area’ as a way to find out what's on. They can then submit entries and attend with their horses. Prior to the day Jocelyn attends working bees making sure that everyone who’s part of the horse section is aware of what’s required to ensure the day runs smoothly. This year a couple of days were held to help paint the hunter jumps and tidy the grounds. On Show Day Jocelyn will be on hand to make sure everything runs to plan and to deal with any problems should they arise. “I get assistance from other members of the horse committee and the great team of stewards that offer their help on the Day,” Jocelyn commented. This year there has been the addition of extra classes and sections to encourage more competitors. Heavy horses (Shires, Percherons, Friesians etc) have been added to the Clydesdale ring this year and the popular Pleasure Horse section has been divided in

two, now being Pleasure Horse and Pleasure Pony. There has also been the inclusion of some Lead Rein classes with the Pleasure Pony section and a Pleasure Harness Horse and Pony section. “The additions to the Pleasure sections are important as it is about encouraging competitors to have a go,” Jocelyn explained. Jocelyn believes that A & P Shows have a bright future. “Just as long as people keep involving and encouraging the next generation to be part of the A & P community, either by competing, or volunteering their time to help run the show,” she stressed. “Best of luck to all those competing,” Jocelyn concluded. Of course there’s no escaping the post Show clean-up days and everyone does their best to attend!

The International Mounted Games Nations Team Championship was held from October 13th - 19th 2019. The finals were a stunning display of speed and agility in the main ring at the Ellesmere A & P Spring Show. Consisting of teams from Australia, USA, South Africa and New Zealand, the competition provided plenty of excitement right from the start of the heats, which were held at the picturesque Trents Wedding Venue near Prebbleton. There were two New Zealand Teams - Black, which included Selwyn riders Leah Zydenbos (aged 18) from Halkett and Max Shanks (aged 18) from Prebbleton - and Silver, in which Max’s younger cousin Luci Shanks (aged 12) was the Reserve Rider. The overseas riders took some time to get used to their ponies, which had been loaned by riders from around New Zealand, and this gave the two New Zealand teams an opportunity to accumulate points. Surprisingly, at the end of day one, the less experienced New Zealand Silver Team was ahead by a massive eleven points, with the NZ Black team ruing some technical errors! On day two the New Zealand weather showed the overseas visitors what ‘Four Seasons in One Day’ really means, with a big southerly and rain arriving during the morning. NZ Black had a better performance in the morning, but the wet conditions in the afternoon kept the playing field level, with the young USA team finishing one point behind NZ Silver, and equal with NZ Black, for the fourth Session.

With a perfect day for the Ellesmere Show, an exciting contest lay ahead. NZ Black finally found their focus in the morning and went into the last session one point in front of NZ Silver, with Australia pulling ahead of the other international teams. There was plenty of drama for the spectators in the last session, with nervous riders and ponies absorbing the atmosphere of the Show. A late injury to one of the NZ Silver riders meant that the young Luci Shanks took the field for the last race, but there was little she

could do to counter the commanding performance of the NZ Black team, who secured the title with a winning margin of nineteen points. NZ Silver came in second, Australia took third, followed by USA then South Africa. The event was a huge success and the organisers are grateful for the large number of local businesses who provided sponsorship to enable it to take place - a first for the South Island.

On Thursday, October 31st, the Hororata Golf Club was host to the iconic duo of Gary McCormick and Sir Tim Shadbolt (Mayor of Invercargill again!), for an evening of comedy. The pair entertained in individual acts, as well as together and had the audience in stitches throughout the entire evening, it was reported. They regaled the crowd with hilarious recounts of their actual experiences, and their particular views on the current and future political climate, including the variety of changes they would make if their ‘Pull Yourself Together’ Party was ever elected to Parliament. Sir Tim’s years of experience as Mayor has exposed him to numerous situations where a laugh has been had at his expense. His self-effacing manner of telling the audience these stories had tears running down several cheeks! There was a certain amount of chuckling from the moment he began to speak, simply due to his mannerism and style of speech. Gary McCormick’s lively delivery of his take on everyday circumstances and events connected with everyone in the room and made for hilarious entertainment. He has the knack of being able to create comedy from the most insignificant things and turn them into an epic event. His planned ‘Pull Yourself Together’ Party gives him the opportunity to express his political views and the changes he would make if the Party were in governance. “Taken in the light in which this was intended, made for entertaining comedy at its best,” said a spokesperson for the organisers. The book auction at half time was another comedic occasion when Gary joined with auctioneer and MC James Perkins to raise the price as he saw fit, until it was sold! The Willows Café on the Hororata Golf Course, provided a delicious

and varied finger food supper success and is the start of what which was well received by the the Hororata Golf Club plan to whole audience and the offer the community going entertainers, with many forward. Entertainment, company, commenting that they would wonderful venue and great food definitely be visiting the Café in makes for outstanding enjoyment the future to sample their day- and the Golf Club advise everyone to watch for their next time offerings. “The evening was a huge event.

While some were swimming and enjoying water sports in the searing heat of Sunday, November 3rd, others were pushing their limits, and their thermostats, in the ninth edition of the Selwyn Running Festival. The event provides options for all levels of keen (or crazy), with options of 21.1km, 10km and 5km, (all with run and walk options) along with the 1400m Kids’ Dash. Malvern Road Runners entered two teams in the Sports Club section with each member of the three person team running the ten kilometre race from Southbridge back to Leeston. Vanessa Moore, Moore Julie Crequer and Jayde Mayberry came in as seventh team in their section, with Regan Baxter, Baxter Devon Crequer and Sarah Wright storming in, in first place! Sarah, Vanessa and Julie were placed first, second and third in their age categories for the 10km. Regan ran in at second place in the two tooth category (40 - 49 years old) and eighth overall, while Devon was fourth in the hogget section (20 - 39 years) and sixth overall.

Andrew Lingard met the challenge and stretched his legs around the 10km course for his first time, while Alice and Darryl Greenwood were also 10km contenders. They were using the kilometres for training towards their Luxmore Grunt (27km on the Fiordland National Park, Kepler Track) mission in December. Numerous other locals also participated in the event, but not under the Malvern Road Runners banner, with many achieving some great personal results in the heat. “A raft of local children blasted round the Kids’ Dash course; Georgie and Sophie Wright, Wright Ella and Ethan Greenwood, Greenwood Olivia Kershaw, Kershaw Abby Baxter, Baxter Henry Lingard and Liliana Roberts,” Roberts reported Jayde Mayberry of the Selwyn Sports Trust. “It was impressive to see them running hard and all finishing, pleased with their achievements and smiles on their faces,” she concluded.

The U13 Colts football team (representing Selwyn United Football Club) headed to Queenstown for the annual South Island Tournament held on October 10th - 12th. “With much laughter and smiles two van loads of players headed down to Queenstown on October 9th. There was much excitement, but in the back of the team’s minds they knew they had a tough pool to play in. However they were ready for the challenge and ready to show that hard work and dedication would pay off,” a Team spokesperson explained. On day one they played three games. The Colts lost their first game to Dunedin Technical and the next two games they won versus South Canterbury and Cashmere Technical. Day two and two games were played both of which the Team won - versus, Christchurch United and Grants Brae. The final day approached and the first game against Waimak, was a big one. The winner of this game would be playing for first, or second, place. It was a tough game and at the final whistle it was a one-all draw. After extra time it was still a draw meaning it went down to penalties. Unfortunately the team ended up losing on penalties

Darfield’s tradition of starting the cricket season slowly continued with their third straight loss in an exceptional game against Southbrook at home. Batting first on a slow but consistent pitch, Darfield were in trouble early with Henry Shipley (20) and Nick Jenkins (16) doing their best to drag the team to a defendable total. But at 45/3 the wheels fell off and the hosts were dismissed for 77 runs. Only a spectacular effort was going to get Darfield close and that is exactly what they produced. The side took four remarkable catches and with former Black Cap Shanan Stewart and current Canterbury player Jack Boyle back in the shed things were looking up with Southbrook struggling at 58/9. An anxious nineteen runs were needed and Darfield only required one more wicket. The last pair of batters added the winning runs as Darfield’s luck had run dry. Henry Shipley finished with 5/27 and Michael McCaughan 3/19. Darfield’s next game is against competition favourites LeestonSouthbridge at Darfield on Saturday, November 9th.
