Now a local in Windwhistle, former school teacher Amanda King was born and raised a city girl in Brisbane, Australia. Recently she featured in the April 24th-30th edition of the Brisbane News and also has photographic works in the Selwyn Gallery’s current exhibition. Amanda has lived in New Zealand for about twelve years in both Canterbury and the Wairarapa. Before arriving in New Zealand Amanda was on her big OE to London and while there took a trip to Croatia. There she met local Fraser King who was shortly to return to New Zealand and take up a stock buyer’s role. Amanda joined him and the rest is history! Her passion and love for art began with Highland Bull, the late, Mr McTavish whose majestic figure stood alone in a field with the wind blowing through his thick coat. “He was quite grand and the picture I took of him became the focal point of my room. When friends saw it - they wanted one too. This inspired me to head out and photograph other rural animals and set up my Facebook page,” Amanda explained. Amanda is a self-taught photographer who never envisaged her art being such a great success. “I love animals,” Amanda commented, “and there’s the bonus of them not talking back,” she said with a smile. “I

Of course, I loved to take photos, but to say I was a city girl is a bit of an understatement. But it is funny where life takes you. Just a city girl turned farm girl… and loving it,” Amanda laughed! Amanda, her husband Fraser and their two children Greta (5) and Dudley (3) live on the King family's sheep and beef farm in Windwhistle, so Amanda gets to be around animals daily.

The couple, who have three adult sons residing in Canterbury, also raise a herd of Pedigree Murray Grey cows on their property. Kathleen is a keen multisport competitor having embarked upon the Coast to Coast four times in the two day individual category, along with twice riding the Forrest Grape Ride, (101 kilometres in Marlborough), the Contact Epic Mountain Bike race (90 kilometres, Lake Hawea) and Loop the Lake 25 kilometre Trail at Lake Rotoiti. While Kathleen enjoys life and the great outdoors she suffered a shoulder injury while training for the Coast to Coast three years ago and tried a few options to relieve the pain. “I tried Osteopath and Acupuncture, but the discomfort remained,” she explained, “then as luck would have it I attended

Treatment times may vary due to the condition and while individual experiences may vary, relief is often instantaneous,” she concluded. Kathleen’s Emmett Therapy qualifications were put to good use recently at the Horse of the Year Show in Napier where she was able to administer short treatments to both those eventing and visiting the Show. But her talents don’t stop there; she is currently a student Pilates mat teacher, teaching small groups from home and a qualified coach where she partners with clients to inspire them to maximise their personal and professional potential.

Contact us for an appointment The number of people receiving the Jobseeker benefit in Selwyn has increased by 36% during the past year, according to data from the Ministry of Social Development, said local MP Amy Adams. Adams “Unfortunately the situation we are seeing here in Selwyn is reflective of the situation nationwide with an additional 13,000 people now receiving a Jobseeker benefit”, Amy added. “The reason for these rising

numbers is that under the current Government the economy is slowing down and job creation is not keeping up with population growth,” Amy said. “Under the previous Nationalled Government between 2015 and 2017 the economy created 57,000 more jobs than the corresponding rise in population growth,” she said. “In the past eighteen months, however, New Zealand’s

working-age population has grown by 114,000 people while the number of new jobs has grown by 70,000, meaning there is a deficit of 44,000 jobs,” Amy commented. “Unfortunately, it is clear that under this Government fewer businesses are willing to take on extra staff and more people are becoming dependent on the benefit for their income,” Amy concluded.

It was a beautiful day and there was a great turn out at the Cantabrians Rugby Fun Day, held at Burnside Park on Friday, May 3rd. This is a day provided for rugby mad kids that want to get involved in a day of rugby, against some fresh competition. The day is for registered players to play with their school mates in a round robin tournament for a fun. There were 106 students entered in seven different Barbarian style teams from across Malvern taking part. A great day was had by all, with some wins and some losses. Local Darfield hockey player Jane Jenkins has just returned from the Gold Coast having played in the biennial TransTasman Masters Hockey Challenge. Games took place between April 30th and May 4th and featured fourteen teams (seven male and seven female) from each country competing in seven age divisions: Over 35, over 40, over 45, over 50, over 55, over 60 and over 65. Each division played three matches and the nation that won the most divisions across the men’s and women’s competitions was declared the Country Champion. Sadly it wasn’t to be New Zealand’s turn to bring home the trophy and unfortunately, other than one team, there wasn’t another gold medal presentation. Jane was however a member of the women’s over 55 team and they were ecstatic to have taken out their division with gold-medal performances. Well done and congratulations!

During the April School holidays, local Darfield High School student Ryan Hughes travelled on the 2019 Willows Cricket Club Youth XI Tour to Malaysia and Sri Lanka. Ryan has played cricket since he was five years old after interest in the sport was generated when watching family members participate. He also plays first XV rugby for Darfield High School. Ryan’s selection for the Tour came after he was observed playing in the Canterbury Country Schools’ team against a Willows team. The Willows Club is based in Rangiora and their objectives are to encourage players in secondary school first XI to play with, and against, experienced players, many of whom are present, or past, first -class cricketers. Their aim is to offer quality cricket, to cricket lovers, in a country atmosphere, where families may come to watch and picnic. As Ryan met the secondary school criteria, this allowed him to be eligible for selection to the Tour team. The Tour, containing secondary school players from throughout New Zealand, provided an amazing experience and learning opportunity for the players. ”We got to play cricket in different conditions than we are normally used to playing in,” Ryan reported. “Players, coaches and managers also got to enjoy some sight seeing while away,” he added. “We loved our time away and gained a lot from the experience. “It was very enjoyable and I learnt much about the culture and cricket in Sri Lanka and Malaysia. I had a good Tour as I made some runs and took some wickets,” Ryan smiled. “The team won four out of the six games that we played; however sadly we weren't able to play the final two games due to the bombings that took place,” he concluded.

West Melton’s Hamish Macdonald is making huge waves across Europe at present with his motocross success, having currently competed in four rounds of the FIM Youth Enduro competition. The first and second rounds were held in Dahlen Germany, where Hamish achieved wins on both days of competition in the Youth class, which goes to twenty one years of age. The third and fourth rounds were held last weekend in Valpacos, Portugal and Hamish managed to take first place on both days, riding his 125 Sherco SER. “The event consisted of a 50 kilometre loop with three special tests. Each loop is completed four times, making it a big day; very demanding and with no breaks in between,” commented Hamish’s parents Mark and Coral Macdonald. Team Raynauds: (L-R) Emma Wilson, Jayde Mayberry, Amy McClintock and Amy Winter who were placed first female team in the 6+6 Adventure Race competition which was held in Southland. Two Selwyn based teams took on the third instalment of the Arrow 6+6 Adventure Race in Invercargill on April, 27th and 28th. Team ‘Raynauds’ was made up of Emma Wilson (Rolleston) Amy McClintock (Lincoln) Jayde Mayberry (Darfield) and Amy Winter (Invercargill). Team ‘Here We Come’ comprised of local Darfield family Janelle Schnell, Schnell Kylie Schnell and Peter Schnell, Schnell along with Regan Breen, Breen (Temuka) - they thought they liked the sound of this event to change it up from Spring Challenge. The race was an epic adventure with four seasons in one day; luckily not typical Southland weather. It offered a real mix of terrain - from sandy stony beaches, to sealed and shingle road and everything in between. Starting on foot at 1pm on Saturday in Colac Bay with a possible fourteen controls to collect, required some sharp

navigation and crucial calls, to get to the bike transition by the 5pm cut-off time. The start time meant teams would likely be racing into the early evening and thus needing head torches and bike lights for the ride back from Riverton to Teretonga Raceway. Team Raynauds made a call early to skip one of the controls in favour of getting across the beach before both dark and high tide. A call that paid off, as crossing the river on dusk allowed them to cross thigh deep, rather than waist deep; as a few other teams found out. Day one wrapped up with one point losses for every fifteen minutes you were late after 7pm. Day two was underway with Teretonga Raceway sprints, a mini Rogaine, a paddle section and some more time on the bike out to Whalers Bay, along the dunes, and enjoying some of the well formed bike trails. As you made your way back

towards Teretonga, collecting all the controls along the way, there was a pit-stop for some paintball target shooting, a skill that we hadn't trained for, but it was a fun and entertaining addition to the course. Once back to base, it was off on foot again for a Rogaine around the beautiful running tracks near Sandy Point. This event was well worth the travel and effort to get to Invercargill. The Race Director Ginge Burnett is keen to showcase what Southland has to offer, show off their running trails and mountain bike tracks and keep it a fun, affordable and enjoyable event. Team Raynauds; 1st female team, 11:22 hrs Here We Come; 5th mixed team, 12:12 hrs.

Jayde Mayberry. The 6+6 Adventure Race was run by the Southland TriClub. An entry-level adventure race it was designed to enable all levels to take part. It is separated into 2 x 6 hour stages (6+6). It is assumed the fastest teams will complete each stage in 4-5 hours with all teams able to complete it in six hours. There will be two periods of dark racing, in the evening of stage 1 & early morning of stage 2. The course details are secret until race day but it will be contained within the Sandy Point and Oreti Beach areas. Maps were given out on race day with time to study them. The race included MTB, ori e nt ee r ing, tr ek k ing, kayaking and a secret stage.

Throughout the 2018 year Lincoln Envirotown have spent a great deal of time developing a new survey and process for the Selwyn Responsible Business Awards. These will assess businesses in regard to their environmental and community related practices. We are grateful to the Waste Management Department of Council who have trialled the new survey and suggested modifications. Local businesses have also been involved in the process. The Trust believe that we now have a comprehensive, streamlined assessment, which will be interesting to businesses and bring about an emphasis on sustainability. In 2018 we commissioned an impressive new trophy to present to the overall Selwyn District winner. This was made possible by the generosity of the Lincoln Com munity Committee in recognition of the tremendous part played in this scheme by the businesses of Lincoln over the years. Recently David Stott of the Kirwee Tennis Club was awarded the M G Begg Memorial Trophy in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Malvern Tennis. David has been a long time organiser of the Saturday senior Malvern Tennis competition. He began twenty seven years ago, working with Terry Gallagher, Gallagher before running it himself for the last twenty five years. David has also been involved in the Kirwee Tennis Club for many years, including a long stint serving as Club Captain. David’s role has sometimes been a thankless one; getting team entries organised, doing the draw while finding courts to play on, answering questions, clarifying rules and at times having an important role in resolving disputes within the competition. This is an essential role that he has always done with a positive and helpful attitude, and this award recognises his great contribution, it was reported. The M G Begg Memorial Trophy is named after the late Malcolm
