On Sunday, February 19th, 151 mountain bikers took to the hills behind Sheffield for the second, annual, Sheffield Rugby Club, Mountain Bike Race. The weather was perfect, with no wind, not too hot and the fog that was present, cleared one hour before the gun went off. Riders could then enjoy spectacular views of the Canterbury plains - assuming they had the time - as they raced the course. This year’s race attracted some of Canterbury’s strongest mountain bikers and it was Brent Millar who took the honours on the day in an incredible time of 1 hour 9 minutes and 44 seconds. The fastest woman of the day went to Sarah Anderson 1.20.23. The Rugby challenge was won by Warren Thomas, Thomas who donned the Sheffield Rugby jersey this year in a time of 1.21.51. He was followed by Kirwee rider Jason Walker. Walker The most astonishing feat on the day was from local thirteen year old Ethan Rose, Rose who rode the course in 1.15.45, coming in tenth position overall. “Look out for this boy in the future,” commented one of the organisers! “There were many factors that contributed to such a great day in the country,” added an event spokesperson.
