After winning their respective classes at the 2015 New Zealand National Gliding Championship in Omarama, Hororata father and son Michael and Nicholas Oakley came together as a team to compete in the 2017 Nationals. These were also held in Omarama, and took place between January 2nd and 14th. The pair flew an ASH-25 twin seat glider in the Open Class (for gliders over fifteen metres in wingspan). This year after only six flyable days and flying a total of 2842 kilometres, Michael and Nicholas were declared the ‘New Zealand Open Class Champions’. They also won trophies for the ‘Unhandicapped Open Class’ and the ‘Most Meritorious
Flight’. This was for their result on day two, when after flying at an altitude of up to 16,000 feet, dodging lightning, hail storms and being airborne for nine hours, they were only one of two gliders to get around the task for the day. Nicholas, who has just returned from a year working in the United Kingdom has, during that time, flown in France, England, and Scotland, plus competed at the Senior World Gliding Championships in Pociunai, Lithuania. Nicholas will head back to the UK in March for the European summer to work and continue training toward representing New Zealand at the Junior World Gliding Championships to be
