Africa has come to Kirwee! What a journey it has been! The Kirwee Players Production of ‘The Lion King Jr’ was all set to go for four shows in April this year. Like a lot of things, due to Covid19 it got put on hold, and we were unable to go through with it, just two weeks out from production week. But now we are back in action, ready to go this weekend!!! From the moment our group of talented local children got

together and sung through the opening number, ‘Circle of Life’, I knew then and there, this was going to be a special show! The children’s dedication to their roles (whether big or small) does not go unnoticed they really ‘bring it’ to the stage! I’ve had to catch myself multiple times at rehearsals, especially during one of the songs that features throughout the Show; ‘They Live in You’, it kept bringing tears to my eyes

and her husband’s travel related jobs. They source donations of quality, secondhand clothing, which they clean and price to sell. Items can be donated to the shop and people will receive a coffee voucher, in return for their items. As well as the huge variety of quality clothing on offer, the shop will house products from small, craft businesses. Currently there are a variety of different craft items on offer within the shop. Local clients can take up a minimum threemonth contract, where they pay a base fee to Hidden Treasures and Denise and Deborah will sell their products for them. People do not pay any commission on sales, as they pay the set monthly contract fee. Anyone interested in this

arrangement are more than welcome to contact the store to discuss details further. The long-term vision for the shop, is to hopefully have someone creating crafts onsite and possibly running workshops. This is something exciting to keep an eye out for in future. Denise and Deborah look forward to providing quality items to the local area, and are sure they will have something to suit most people. Hororata Primary School held their very successful Spring Festival, on November 1st. Lots of fun activities took place, and

lots of happy faces could be seen. There were a great variety of animals on display; miniature ponies, lambs, calves, goats

Tony Thwaites and Hororata’s unofficial Mayor Roger Parsons, Parsons took on the all important cake judging job. This year the winners were: first Alice Wright, Wright second Lauretta McCorkindale, McCorkindale third Ollie Loos and fourth Emily Breading. Breading The much sought after Sara Irving Christmas Cake, reached the highest price of $ 171. Roger had another important role, unlocking the gate to the newly refurbished swimming pool. The Malvern Community Board meeting on Tuesday, October 27th was held in the Darfield Library and Service Centre. Board members discussed a variety of topics following on from the community committee meetings they have attended over the past month. The Board continues to plan for their stand at the Courtenay A&P Show in November where rubbish recycling will be the key display. Information on the proposed District Plan will also be displayed, and Council staff will be available to talk to. The Council’s Infrastructure Manager attended the meeting and told Board members about some of the activities in his department, including solid waste, roading, and water services. He noted his staff will be working hard to assist with several reviews including one from the Canterbury Mayoral Forum on water services in Canterbury. At the September meeting, the Board appointed Board members Judith Pascoe, and John Morten to the Westview Special Fund Committee, which will shortly have its first inaugural meeting. The Committee will consider what types of Darfield projects will be funded from it, and more will be made available soon. The Board plans to have another community dropdrop-in session on November, 9th from 2:30pm - 5pm, in Darfield Library’s Meeting Room. Anyone is welcome to come and talk to the Board and staff about concerns, suggestions, and ideas, as well as enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. Past dropdrop-in sessions have been very successful with ideas received for community projects, and community issues discussed. Members of the public are welcome to attend the Community Board meetings and to talk to the Board about any issues in their community. Please contact the Board secretary secretary@selwyn.govt.nz to make an appointment if you wish to speak. An agenda can be found on the Council website on the Thursday before the meeting. St John honoured sixty-nine members over the weekend of October 10th, these people were recognised in the Order of St John Honours list. The members that were named have shown remarkable dedication and a significant contribution to the work of St John. Robert Mugford (Bob), and Robert Dunbar were two Malvern locals named on the Honours list, and conferred as a Member of St John. Bob has been a member of the Malvern Area Committee since 2011. He is also a long-time Malvern Community Board Member, and current Selwyn District Councillor. Bob’s business and leadership skills have been of great benefit to St John. He is well regarded by, and strongly committed to St John service delivery in the local community, and wider district.

Africa is coming to Selwyn! Well-known African drumming and dance teacher/performer Koffie Fugah, Fugah will bring this African culture experience, in the form of African songs, drumming and a dance interactive workshop, to Rolleston and surrounding areas, this November. People will be taken on a journey, as they experience a range of West African

Senior Constable Bruce Ward, was one of three winners for Westfield Riccarton’s, 2020 Local Hero awards. A huge congratulations to Senior Constable Bruce Ward, Ward who was named as a Westfield Riccarton 2020 Local Hero winner. Bruce’s chosen organisation is, New Zealand Blue Light, who will receive an amazing $10,000, to help with the fantastic work they do. Blue Light Christchurch is going to

Hororata Fire Brigade held their ‘Trick or Treat’ event, on Saturday, October 31st. There were some fantastic costumes, both children’s and adults! Everyone that attended enjoyed a b a r b eq u e at th e St a t io n afterwards. The children could also participate in a colouring competition designed, and judged by Gemma Stubbs. Stubbs Danny and Gemma Stubbs also kindly donated the prizes for the winners. “It is important to us as a brigade to be out in our community, helping foster community spirit. Although we are members of the Fire Brigade, we are first and foremost members of our great little community,” commented a spokesperson. The Brigade would like to thank the businesses who donated lollies, prizes, and sausages for the barbeque. Also, a big thank you to the households who handed out lollies to excited children.

2010 was a challenging year for many in our communities, due to the earthquake. During this time, members of the St James Church congregation in Sheffield, faced the issue of not being able to have minister lead services, as regularly as they had been. A small group of parishioners formed a committee and developed an innovative approach to the challenge. The formation of Cafè Hope was the outcome of this situation. “On the second Sunday of every month, we gather in the former Bowling Club rooms at Sheffield Domain, for an informal service and a cuppa. We regularly have invited guests to share their thoughts and enjoy the conversations that evolve. Cafè Hope is well supported by members of our wider Malvern communities,” commented a spokesperson. There will also be stalls selling a wide range of products, carnival rides and food. “By show day, most of the hard work has been done by the secretary and committee, and my job is to go around the Show, thank the judges and exhibitors, to lead the grand parade and to present some of the major prizes. These are difficult times for committees planning these wonderful community events, therefore we need to support this fantastic family show. WHAT IS AN A & P SHOW? Every year, the Saturday after Canterbury Anniversary/Show weekend, the Courtenay A&P Show is held at their Showgrounds in Kirwee. Fun fact: A&P (not AMP as some spell it, stands for Agricultural and Pastoral. A term that means the farming of animals and crops. 145 years ago, people in this district got together to organise and hold the first Courtenay A&P Show. The goal was to foster fri end ly

competition and to recognise and reward hard work, skill and good breeding practices. Today the Show is split into sections: Sheep, Goats, Cattle, Grain and Seed, Poultry, Sheep Dog Trials, Horse Section, Produce Shed and Vintage Tractors, Machinery and Cars. Each section has a series of competitions - called classes. Every year, the Secretary puts out a Schedule of Classes. This is a booklet which lists every

The role of Produce Shed convenor has, for the last twenty years, been in the very capable hands of David Stott. Stott I (Bronwyn Bronwyn Hamilton) Hamilton hope, as being new to the job this year, that I can fill some excessively big shoes. I have been involved with the show since coming back into the area, after a thirty-fiveyear absence, having always loved the ‘Kirwee Show’ as I knew it then. As Convenor, the job is to see the smooth running of each section on the day, but none of this can happen without the whole team, and it is an honour to be part of it. The Produce Shed covers a very wide range of interesting entries. The categories are, Homemade Wine and Brew, Eggs and Jam, Cooking, Photography in Colour and Black and White, Home Industries: which covers Knitting, Crochet, Sewing, Quilts, and this year due to the theme of the show, a Then and Now table. We have art with the Children’s section, with both a junior and senior level on show. Schools put on wonderful displays of their pupil’s achievements throughout the year, situated in the tent outside. The local district under 21’s has a class as well. Every year we try to get new people to enter, with advertising and

general word of mouth, but you will always see the regulars that have been entering since they were children. Even I used to put a sand saucer in! We start early in the year, looking at the different classes and whether we need to put new ones in, or take out those not getting entries. We also decide on the Judges and helpers early, as there is a large group of people that are needed to make this happen. Last year we had classes open to the public, to teach people how to present flowers, and vegetables. But this year has been a little bit different due to Covid restrictions. The week prior to the big day, is spent setting up tents and the Friday is remarkably busy with tables, photo stands, deer gates to put the quilts on, and getting the judging sheets and display cards ready. Vases are also set up for all the wonderful flowers. The evening sees the start of entries arriving. Again, a large hard-working team is involved here. Saturday dawns early, as entries start coming in at 8am, and are directed where to put them by the team on each section. The Produce Shed closes at 9.45am, ready for the judging. The Judges are met and given a cup of tea, they are then taken through to their section to meet

the member in attendance, who will assist them with judging. After that, we cover the food items, and open the doors to the public. This is our community, so head along to the Show to see what is on offer and join in with the fun. See you there! Bronwyn Hamilton, Produce Shed Convenor.

Shane grew up on the family farm based at Aylesbury, run by his parents (Andrew Andrew and Mirie Brooker), Brooker and it’s from these roots that his business operates. Shane is now into his third season as an owner/operator, and he takes a huge amount of pride in his role. He runs a wellmaintained fleet of equipment, due to experience from previously working as a qualified, heavy diesel mechanic for six years. “Being the business owner/operator is definitely in the client’s favour, as customers deal with me personally and I pride myself on doing the very best job possible,” Shane commented proudly. “I will always endeavour to get to the job on time and as required,” he added. baling needs, as well as tube wrapping for round and square bales. The baler is equipped with weigh scales and a moisture metre for accurate readings. The business has a South Island wide client base, so he is always looking for straw, baleage, and hay. Shane is also available for one pass cultivation, using a 6M Horsch Terrano. “I’ve been driving tractors and balers since I was about twelve, so I have always had a passion for it and I really enjoy what I do,” Shane concluded.

COUNTRY FUN AT KMS Kirwee Model School held their annual fun, family Pet Day on Friday, October 30th. As well as a range of pets on display, families rolled their sleeves up and baked amazingly creative, delicious looking cakes. $2,143 was raised in total via a live auction, an online auction, and the whacky wheel. Graeme Marshall is the Grain and Seed convenor at this year’s Courtenay A&P Show. He gives some insight below to what the convenors role is. As convenor what is your role? Do you do any promotion to attract entries, or is it usually repeat entrants? How many entrants do you usually attract? A large proportion of our entries come from the seed companies, so I talk to the representatives and remind them to put their entries in. They are good at keeping samples at harvest time. Some farmers put their

own entries in too. We usually have 160 entries each year. On the day what are your duties? Do you have assistance? We set up trestle tables with the classes and numbers on the Friday. Show morning, we put the entries out and judging begins from 10am. Following Show Day and prior to it, are you involved in working bees and cleanclean-ups, setset-ups? We set up on the Tuesday and Friday before the Show and most of the clean-up in the Grain and Seed section is done

DARFIELD PRIMARY PET DAY Darfield Primary School (DPS) held their annual Pet Day on Wednesday, October 21st. This is a highlight of the school year for many children. The weather was pleasant and everyone's enthusiasm was high, and filled

SHEEP CONVENOR This year’s Sheep Convenor is Ashley Seaton, Seaton he has just taken over this role from his brother Warwick, Warwick as he has now become Junior Vice President. “I previously had the role of Sheep Convenor for a few years, prior to being

elected Junior Vice President myself, back in 2015,” he added. Ashley lives in Courtenay, with his wife Anna and children Georgia, Georgia Fergus and Jack. Jack “I have been involved with the Show since 2004 and was President in 2017, but I had been helping out at working bees with my Dad well before then. His role as Sheep Convenor, is to organise judges and stewards prior to the Show, and on show day make sure everything runs smoothly. He also must make sure all sheep, judges and stewards are in the right sections, ready to judge. Presenting the trophies and special prizes, as well as the draw for the gift lamb section, is another part of the job. This year’s feature breed is South Suffolk, most years the sheep section has approximately the same amount of entries, being 150 plus pet lambs. Some

local farmers are contacted before the Show, to see if they would like to donate a gift lamb or hogget. “Prior to show day, we usually have a working bee to do jobs around the grounds. On the Tuesday before, we set up sheep pens and on Friday we put the signs up,” Ashley explained. “On Sunday, after the Show, we pack all the pens away and pick up any rubbish. “I see the future of A&P shows to be especially important for the community. They are a great day out for the family to see what goes on in the agricultural sector, they also bring town and country residents together,” Ashley explained. “The Courtenay A&P show has a good future, being in an agricultural area, and we have a good amount of people on the committee, so I hope it keeps going for a fair while yet.”

EQUESTRIAN SECTION This years Horse section convenor, for the second year in a row is Jocelyn Thrower. Thrower “I joined the A&P and Horse committee five years ago, upon my return back to living in Kirwee. Growing up just down the road, I have always considered Courtenay A&P Show my local show, even when I lived elsewhere,” Jocelyn commented smiling. “I remember as a child I would enter ponies, sand saucers and mini cactus gardens. Even living to town, I would still come out and compete either in the Horse section or in the Produce Shed,” she added. “Each year we try to attract new and former entries, via an Equestrian events page on Facebook. This is a popular place for equestrian competitors, to find out what events are coming up in the Canterbury area,” she explained. Normally there are

approximately 225 - 250 horses and ponies entered in the Courtenay A&P Show. This year will see the continuation of a new section, that made its first appearance last year, for Recreational (Pleasure) Horse and Ponies. This section provided low key classes, which proved to be popular, as it encouraged local riders and gave them the opportunity to be able to attend an A&P Show if they wanted. There are also three lead rein classes in this section, which are great for children who want to head along and have fun. “My duties as convenor is to ensure that Judges, Stewards and other helpers are where they need to be, and ensure thing s ar e run ni ng to the timetable set,” she explained. “Courtenay A&P Show have a few great helpers that turn up to working bees and show day, just to get jobs

done,” she said smiling. “The week before the Show is busy with two set-up days, sorting out jumps and the main ring. I also spend evenings sorting out boxes for Judges/ Stewards with ribbons, prize money and competitor lists,” Jocelyn added. The day after the Show is clean-up day, putting away jumps etc, and picking up any rubbish left behind. What do you see as the future of the A & P Show - in general and this one in particular? “I believe Courtenay A&P Show has a very strong future, we do try to keep some traditional events, but we also have to make changes to meet our competitor requirements,” she concluded.

The New World Rolleston Kids Triathlon was held on Sunday, October 18th, at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre and Foster Park, Rolleston. The event is designed to give primary aged children an introductory experience to a multi-sport and triathlon event. The focus is to give this experience in a fun, positive and supportive atmosphere. “With New Zealand and Canterbury in particular being world renowned for producing world class multisport athletes the ‘2020 New World Rolleston Kids Triathlon’ might just unearth the next Braden Currie (3 x Coast to Coast Champion, NZ Ironman Champion) or Andrea Hewitt (ITU Triathlete, Olympic and Commonwealth

Games representative),” commented one of the organisers. There were four age groups, with all the age groups completing different swim, bike and run distances. The weather was great, and the participation level was high, with more entries than last year. There were lots of happy, smiling competitors out enjoying the courses. The organisers would like to thank all the competitors, volunteers and sponsors, that made this such a successful event. Keep an eye out for the 2021 Kids Triathlon and enter early to be in-to-win some awesome pre-race prizes. This year, Beau Hutchins (7 years) of

Filters in your Vehicle! Engine Air filter. While the engine is running it is of course burning fuel (petrol or diesel). The fuel mixes with air inside the engine cylinders before it ignites, causing a controlled explosion and driving the engine around. There is a long and complicated equation, to calculate the volume of air the engine uses per litre of fuel burnt, but it works out to be about 10,000. At highway engine speed it takes about ten minutes to filter 10,000 litres of air. Or in other words, the engine air filter, could filter the volume of air in an average 3bedroom house, in just over 1.5 hours of driving. Now fill that house with a bit of dust, pollen, leaves and insects, it shows how much work the engine air filter does in its life. Engine Fuel filter. So, while the copious amount of air is being filtered, the fuel is also running through a filter receiving similar filtration treatment. Where we find the biggest problem, is in diesel

vehicles. Diesel fuel tanks are prone to condensation and this moisture collects in the bottom of the fuel tank. The diesel and water don't mix and in the thin layer between the two fluids, an algae grows. This algae, known as ‘Diesel Bug’, will block up filters and eventually cause very expensive engine component failures. The simplest way to stop this damage, is to replace your diesel fuel filter every second service. Engine Oil filter. Quite simply, engine oil is the blood of your engine, and just like your own blood is filtered by your liver, your engine oil needs filtration too. Engine oil breaks down over time and gets contaminated by the byproducts of combustion. These by-products need to be contained and not spread around the engine. Your oil filter will not clean the oil, it just stops the circulation of larger particles. Engine oil is pumped around the engine under pressure and passes through

the filter four or five times per minute. It is important to replace engine oil and the oil filter periodically, to remove the contaminated filter and old oil. Cabin filter. This is the most forgotten about filter and is the only filter that has your own personal health in mind. This filter acts as a dust and pollen barrier, between the outside of your vehicle and the inside cabin area. On farms it is a really nice place for rodents to store their winter food stocks. We have had complaints of a lack of wind coming from cooling vents, caused by blocked cabin filters. Darfield Automotive suggest replacing all mentioned filters regularly, to keep your vehicle in premium condition. They all should be checked or replaced during your vehicles regular standard servicing.

KIMBER RURAL FENCING FENCING FOR ALL TYPES OF AGRICULTURAL FENCING The opening of fishing at Lake Coleridge is Saturday, 7th November, set to be celebrated again with a fishing competition, with a great prize pool generously sponsored by Hunting and Fishing. Lake Coleridge is the most popular lake in the region for fishing and this event is a great way for anglers to celebrate the traditional high-country opening. The focus of the competition is on participation, and every angler who shows their licence at the weigh-in, will be in the draw for many spot prizes. The competition will be based

at the turn off to Ryton Bay from Harper Road, where there will be a Fish and Game tent and weigh station. Weigh-in is from 9am - 1pm, with the prize draw around 1:30pm. People need to ensure they arrive at the weigh-in before 1pm, to avoid missing out. All fish must be caught in Lake Coleridge, or the nearby Coleridge lakes. They must be whole and not gutted for the weigh-in. There will be a free sausage sizzle all day. Landowners have given permission to hold the competition in the paddock on the left, as people go onto the

road to go towards Ryton Bay, off Harper Road. Camping is also permitted in this paddock for the weekend. If people are staying overnight night, please take all your rubbish with you, use the toilet down at the lake, or the portaloo provided by Fish and Game. No dogs are allowed due to lambing. Selwyn residents are being invited to share their views on what their priorities are, for Selwyn District Council’s spending over the next ten years. The Council are surveying people in Selwyn, on their priorities and how these should be funded, as part of an early engagement for the next LongTerm Plan. The Long-Term Plan sets the budget and work programme for the Council, for the next ten years and is reviewed every three years. “With planning for the LongTerm Plan 2021-2031 under way, the Council wants to make sure it is reflecting ratepayers’ priorities, for how the Council can help make Selwyn a great place to live and work in,” Mayor Sam Broughton said. “Just like all households, we

plan our finances, work out what we need to spend and how we’re going to pay for it. As a Council we are here to serve the district and to make sure that people have the best possible opportunities. You can help us by telling us what you think is important for Selwyn and where we should be focusing our attention,” he added. In the online survey, the Council are asking ratepayers what activities the Council’s priorities should be, and whether the Council should increase, decrease, or maintain the current level of spending. It is also asking ratepayers if spending were to increase, how should it be paid for and what is their willingness to pay more? The funds the Council has, come from different sources; mainly from rates, but also from other sources such as user fees,

government subsidies, grants and borrowing. The survey is one of several ways the Council is seeking feedback, to help with preparing the Long-Term Plan. It builds on themes identified at a recent community workshop, with people representing different demographics, backgrounds, and identified from the annual residents’ survey. The Council is also carrying out a quick poll, on why people are choosing to move to Selwyn and asking communities to share their ideas for how the Council could improve on social, economic, environmental, or cultural wellbeing in the district. Sunday, November 1st there was a community meeting held to discuss the formation of a Football Hub in the Malvern region, based in Darfield. The ere was an introduction from Scott Shearing, Shearing and then a presentation from Khalil Gerbeaux, Gerbeaux who is the business development manager at Selwyn United Football Club (SUFC). “We had a small and disappointing turnout from the community of approximately ten people, but we still managed to have very robust discussions, and managed to agree with SUFC to move forward with progressing the formation of the Hub,” commented Scott Shearing. “The infrastructure is there, all

setup at the Recreation Centre grounds, we just need players to get it up and running,” he added. “We have proposed to have an open day in the new year at the Recreation Centre, where we can get everyone together and have a kick around,” he said. “In the meantime, the volunteers that have signed up, will have at least one more committee meeting before the end of the year, to which everyone can attend,” he explained. “Thank you goes to Darfield High School for the use of their staff room, and everyone else that attended the meeting. I will be in touch with people to organise another committee meeting,” Scott concluded.

Perhaps it was the long drive to Cheviot, or the distraction of the most picturesque ground in the country, that caused Darfield's cricketers to put up a disappointing effort against the Hurunui side last Saturday. The day started with the toss being lost, but Darfield were planning to bowl anyway, and they were looking sharp at the start as Jesse Frew picked up two wickets, to see the Magpies at 21/2. From then on, it was a tough day in the dirt and as the temperature increased so did Cheviots score. Darfield dropped a couple of catches to let the hosts off the hook and their punishment was to come later, when they were forced to jump the fence several times to retrieve the ball, from some well struck sixes. Liam Foulkes chipped in with two wickets and Josh Roche snatched his first for the Club, but it didn't prevent Cheviot scoring what seemed like an adequate total of 222/5, from their 45 overs. Boasting a batting line up thick with talent, Darfield backed themselves to chase down the score, especially since the pitch had flattened out in the sun. A worse start couldn't have been imagined as Nick Jenkins, Jenkins Jesse Frew and Henry Shipley accrued five runs between them. Shipley can count himself the unluckiest, as he was spectacularly caught when the fielder lost sight of the ball, spun 360 degrees on the spot and extended his left arm to balance himself, only to find the ball landing gently in his hand. Liam Foulkes (19) Ryan Hughes (27) and Alister Collins (23) tried to steady the innings, but once the tail enders joined them for their turn at bat, it was a task beyond even them. Darfield were bundled out for 104 with 20 overs still unused. The teams next game is at Mandeville on Saturday 7th November, at 12:30pm, against Ohoka, who were just handed their first defeat of the season by Oxford, last weekend.

Results 31st October 2020 - 1st Club Champs Over Labour weekend club members competed in the Marlborough Spring Champs in Blenheim, with Andre Du Toit winning the Target Rifle A grade and the Malvern Club Team convincing winners in the teams competition. Returning to our range for our 1st Club Championship Day of the 2020/21 season, shooters were greeted by a tricky wind and fine hot weather. As usual, some coped with the wind better than others. Bevan Mehrtens set the early pace for others to follow. Allan White nearly caught Bevan, but was just pipped by Bevan’s centre count. Two new visitors were welcomed to the range, Jonno and Jordan wanting to try their hunting rifles on the range. The classes cater for a range of
