MISSION TO MARS Ever since Amber Collishaw was young, she loved to tinker – a passion that began with pulling apart home appliances to discover what made them tick. Although she couldn't fully grasp the science behind it at the time, this curiosity never left her. On March 8, Amber was welcomed into the Houston United Space School (USS) Class of 2024. In July this year, Amber will travel to Houston to attend lectures and workshops led by experts in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) field, including astronauts, engineers, scientists, and leaders within the aerospace industry. The program not only fosters technical and scientific skills but also emphasizes cultural exchange, teamwork, and global perspectives on space exploration. It educates and inspires youth to continue the pursuit of STEM, despite challenges, as it is worthwhile

and impactful for society. Amber says, “Being selected to represent New Zealand at the United Space School, a place where everyone shares this spark of curiosity and a passion for learning, is truly amazing.” The United Space School (USS) is an annual educational program held in Houston, Texas, run by the Foundation for International Space Education (FISE). The USS is a highly competitive event, accepting only 46 individuals from around the globe who are passionate about science, innovation, and space. “The day I found out about my acceptance,” says Amber, “I had just finished school and was heading home when my phone buzzed with emails. The first thing I saw was "Congratulations," and before I could even process it, I had to check if it was real.” It was. Continued on page 4...
