live DJ, fades and braids and even a talking car were part of the recent fun afternoon celebrating the official opening of the new Selwyn Youth Hub, based in Rolleston Community Centre. A steady crowd of visitors enjoyed the afternoon of celebrations with KITT the Knight Rider car, food, drink, activities and competitions. Representatives from the wide range of service providers and Selwyn’s four high schools also attended. The Selwyn Youth Hub is a collaboration, bringing together youth services and organisations from around the community, including The Collective Trust, Youth Town, Family Planning

and Te Tahi Youth, to deliver services and programmes dedicated to young people aged twelve to twenty four years old. The Hub idea and the services provided were based on needs identified by Selwyn young people and by the principals at the four Selwyn high schools. The services are designed to help young people grow, thrive and feel connected in the Selwyn community. Services will range from health services, counselling, career advice, education and training, through to events, activities and courses parenting and youth courses, learner driver courses, drug and alcohol counselling sessions, art classes, te reo Māori classes and waiata sessions.

he Selwyn Lions Clubs’ expectations were exceeded when they received fifty two entries for their ‘Show Your Support’ Decorate a Bra Competition which raised funds for breast cancer. Around one hundred and twenty visitors attended the event and were delighted and amazed at the creativity and variety of the decorated bras from people of all ages. There are some very talented people in our community, the youngest entrant was a young man, aged eight! Exhibitors competed for prizes in three categories, Tasty Titbits was won by Justine Stack, Bizarre Bra was won by Diane de Wagt and Back to Nature was won by Jennie Farrah de Wagt. A further award for students Under 18 was awarded to Sarah Bellinger. The Overall Judges award was won by the team from Hei Hei Health, who took time out from their busy schedule to construct their masterpiece during their lunch breaks, well done girls! Visitors also enjoyed seeing a couple of bras modelled by contestants. The event was supported by six stallholders showcasing lovely gifts and treats for sale, while Birdsong Kitchen donated a beautiful cake for Auction. Many local businesses from Prebbleton, Lincoln and Rolleston generously donated gifts for the prizes and raffles. Selwyn Lions Club is sincerely grateful for their kindness and support. Almost everyone knows of someone who has experienced breast cancer, so ‘Show Your Support’ was an event close to many people's hearts. Jane and Kathy were our two entertaining Lions Club comperes, helping make the whole afternoon a success by raising funds, for a worthy cause, whilst providing a fun afternoon out. Lois Thomas, Show Your Support Event Committee.

Overall Judges Choice winner, Hei Hei Health Centre.
