DARFIELD ARTIST HITS THE MARK WITH FIRST SOLO SHOW Emerging Darfield artist Scott McIntosh is taking the next step in his creative journey, with his first solo exhibition set to open at Ashe Gallery in Christchurch in October. Scott recently had two paintings, A New Start and Rush Hour, from his ‘Riders’ series shown at Ashe, a Christchurch gallery that showcases contemporary New Zealand artists and designers. Now he is preparing for his solo show, BULLSEYE, which he describes as an important opportunity as he works to gain traction in the New Zealand art market. The title refers to taking aim, backing yourself, and trying again if you miss. “This is an amazing opportunity for an artist like me trying to gain traction in the New Zealand art market,” Scott says. The exhibition will run from October 2-17 and is open to the public. The opening night will be held at 5pm on Friday, October 2, and Scott says anyone interested in art is
welcome to come along. More details can be found through his social media pages. Having work on the walls at Ashe Gallery is a big step forward for Scott, who has long had the goal of moving from being an unknown artist at the bottom of the world in New Zealand to exhibiting in galleries. He says Ashe has helped bring that dream closer to life. Scott’s ‘Riders’ series takes inspiration from people using horses to work and play, with his daughter’s love of horses helping spark the idea. “This series is intentionally fairly loose and leaves a lot to the viewer to decide what story they want to see in them,” Scott says. “It may be that they see themselves, or maybe someone they know, but horses are the main feature.” The response from the local community has been positive, and that support has already led to other opportunities, including painting a park bench for the primary school
with help from local artist Alysha Stuart. Scott’s interest in art began when he was a child. He loved to draw and paint and says he has never really stopped. He also worked as a tattoo artist before making painting his main medium.
