ZEUS BEGINS A SPECIAL JOURNEY Kirwee locals Keriana and Doug Green have welcomed a very special new member into their family, four-month-old Zeus, a black Labrador being raised through the Low Vision Australia breeding programme as part of his journey towards becoming an assistance dog. The couple decided to become puppy raisers for Assistance Dogs New Zealand Trust after seeing the difference assistance dogs can make in the lives of young New Zealanders and their families. “We felt that the time, effort

and love we invested now could help provide greater independence, confidence and support for someone in the future,” Keriana says. “It makes the commitment worthwhile. We also loved the idea of being part of a puppy’s formative years, helping to shape their confidence, behaviour and skills while including them in our everyday lives.” Unlike a pet dog, Zeus can accompany Keriana and Doug to many workplaces, shops, meetings and community

events, giving him valuable exposure to different people, environments and situations. “Every outing is an opportunity for him to learn and develop the skills he’ll need as a future assistance dog,” Keriana says. The couple are discovering that Zeus is a real people-lover who thrives on human interaction and affection. One of their favourite routines happens each morning when he wakes.

“He’ll stretch his front paws out of his crate and wait for them to be rubbed before he’s ready to start his day. It’s a sweet little routine that quickly won us over.” For Zeus, however, the next 12 months are about much more than enjoying puppyhood. Early socialisation is a crucial part of preparing a future assistance dog.
