A WELL-DESERVED HONOUR When Graeme Kates learned he had been nominated for the King’s Service Medal for conservation work at Arthur’s Pass, he says he simply carried on. He did not know a nomination was under way until early April, when the Government Honours Unit contacted him. In mid-May, the Governor-General of New Zealand told him His Majesty the King wished to award him the medal. He says he felt overwhelmed and proud, but what struck him most was the response after the honours were announced on King’s Birthday Monday. By day’s end, he had received more than 300 messages and calls. Graeme has long been committed to conservation and community service. He has led predator-control work, protected native species, volunteered with LandSAR and the fire brigade, supported environmental projects, and shared public information about conditions in Arthur’s Pass National Park. For him, that work has always felt instinctive. “Put a challenge in front of me and let me run. I’m very much a see-something-thatneeds-doing, just-do-it kind of guy.” Continued on page 11….
