‘ALL TIED UP’ WOWS JUDGES AT WEARABLE ARTS COMPETITION Darfield High School’s clever wearable art designers, Scarlett Sanders and Anzel Nel took their creativity to new heights with their entries in this year's TOI Student Wearable Arts Regional Competition after countless hours of design and construction. Scarlett Sanders' design: ‘Slope Style’ received an award for ‘Innovative Use of Materials’, meanwhile Anzel Nel's design, ‘All Tied Up' received an award for ‘Excellent Garment Construction’, ‘Star of the Show’ and ultimately ‘First Place’ for all of Canterbury. As part of her placing, Anzel will be considered for the National Competition. TOI is run in collaboration with World of WearableArt (WOW), offering the next generation of textile artists and designers an exciting opportunity to experience the WOW world. "TOI" means art in te reo Māori, and our TOI platform challenges students to take art off the wall and put it on

the human form. Anzel’s winning piece, ‘All Tied Up’, took a familiar item, men’s ties, and reimagined it into something entirely unexpected. “Men’s ties used to be a popular fashion piece back in the day,” she said. “Today, ties are only used for business or formal events. I wanted to use a single-purpose item and create something completely opposite with it.” While the concept sounded simple at first, Anzel said the reality of working with ties quickly proved more complex. She initially believed they would be an “easy and simple” material, but soon discovered the challenge of making them behave like a cohesive fabric. As the build progressed, she found practical solutions that helped the construction come together and the process speed up. By the time the garment was complete, she said she was “really happy with the outcome and how it looked and that the

effort was worth it.” The project was a significant commitment, stretching across several months. Anzel spent about a month developing the design and gathering materials, then around two

months constructing the dress. One of the biggest hurdles was dealing with the different textures, sizes and types of ties, which made it difficult to join pieces cleanly and build the skirt pattern.
