Waikirikiri Selwyn marked this year’s Matariki in true style, with a district-wide celebration of culture, community, and connection. Over two weeks, locals enjoyed a wide array of events including traditional workshops, cultural performances, stargazing, and storytelling — all culminating in a magical night under the stars. The flagship event, Mānawatia a Matariki, lit up the Rolleston Town Centre on Thursday 19 June, drawing a crowd of over 5,000 people. The evening featured an impressive showcase of kapa haka from local schools including: • Te Kura Tītoki Kirwee Model School • Te Kura o Papatahora West Melton School • Te Kura Tuarua o Tāwera Darfield High School • Te Rōhutu Whio • Ngā Puāwai o Tawera The atmosphere was electric, with families wrapped up warm to enjoy powerful performances and soak up the sense of community pride. Adding to the star-studded feel of the evening, rising Aotearoa music talent Hone took to the stage. With past performances at the One Love Festival and support slots for the likes of ONEFOUR, Sammy J, and Katchafire, Hone brought energy, soul,

and undeniable mana to the celebration. The town centre came alive with colour and light thanks to striking Illuminate-style installations, adding a dreamlike glow to the festivities and creating the perfect setting for this special time of reflection and renewal. The Matariki celebrations wrap up on Saturday 28 June at Te Ara Ātea, with a final event for younger tamariki and whānau. Beloved musical duo Loopy Tunes — sisters Leah and Siu — will host an interactive bilingual session filled with music, stories, and fun. Selwyn District Council’s Matariki programme has once again proven a highlight on the local calendar — a beautiful way to honour the past, celebrate the present, and look to the future under the guiding stars of Matariki.
